IMCDA '13 Registration

So whats the past sell-out rate on IMCDA? Its in my race plan and the road-trip vacation plan for 2013, do I need a midnight multi-computer strategy, or can I have coffee on monday and register lesurely?

  • Better safe than sorry, but I didn't register until Sept last year for 2012, and think there were still about 100 spots left.
  • While IM CDA tends to fill a bit quicker than in past races from a few years ago, I have yet to see it fill in less than several days. It seems that IM Texas may have taken some of the early season racers away from IM CDA as well, which would or could allow an even more leisurely sign up pace.
  • I've just been on computer at 3PM Eastern time (noon local) and never had a problem w/ online reg.

  • With IMSG now out of the picture, my guess is that IMCDA will sell out sooner this year although how much sooner would be sheer speculation. But suppose that 500 former IMSG competitors shift to IMCDA as their nearest early season west coast IM, then it's conceivable that IMCDA might sell out by end of July.
  • I'm 90% in for CDA'13, as the timing of the race works very well with the training and racing opportunities I have in the winter and spring. I'm traveling home all day on Monday so nice to know I don't have to register from a bar in Denver during my layover...

  • Thanks Guys.

@Paul: good point. I'm one of those former IMSG guys looking for the next closest IM....

I'm all in for IMCDA and IMAZ in '13. So then the plan then is to make a good cup of coffee the next morning and get online.

  • Rian, not to hijack this thread but I was noticing your pre OS vs post OS numbers.

Your drop in weight combined with massive increases in FTP and vdot are spectacular.

All I can say is wow!
  • +1 Almost 50% in w/kg! Pow.

  •  Foundation spots available late i believe?

  • This was a great thread. It actually really got me thinking and i took out the calendar for next year. My plans are really similar. I have not done a full IM yet and planning on doing CDA and AZ. Both are geographically great. While AZ is late I think it will keep me in the game, which I like, then I go into the OS.
  •  @ Dino: Yeah these are great races for us westies. Timing and spread is perfect for doing two and getting in an OS. I just realized the other day if I was going to get two on the calendar next year I had to do something soon. If you're going to get into AZ, you're gonna have to be on the ball, or come out and volunteer this year. I volunteered last year and had a BLAST. Nice to give back a little too.

@Al and Jeff: Thanks! It was a great first OS, could not be more pleased, got close to hitting all my goals for the whole year in 4 months! Safe to say I'm now taking the EN kool-aid straight from the scoop, no water needed.....

  • Interesting side note... You still register for IMCDA THIS YEAR if you are willing to pay the foundation rate... Might be the bullet I need to bite to make IMAZ happen the lazy way...
  •  The bigger question is will there be an IMCDA in 2013?  Some say no.  Some say that it is going to move to SoCal (SLO) or to somewhere in Oregon.

  • There's really nowhere viable in Oregon to put it. I hope they don't move it to SoCal, CdA is such a nice venue and there's not much going on here in the NW, Ironman wise, except for Canada.

  • The Event Schedule on the IM CDA website shows registration for 2013 happening on-site at the usual times - Sat for eager 2012 athletes, and Mon AM for volunteers and others. Has there been an official announcement rescinding this info?
  • I hope CdA is solid, with the new bike course I want to come back to it in a couple of years. It works great for a CdA- AZ combo. Not sure which one I will do in 2013. Maybe Canada again.
  • Now I think rumors are blending together. The "chatter" I was hearing was that SLO and Oregon where replacements for the positively, ain't gonna happen again, IMSG. Or, should I say, SG 70.3.

Seems wierd that those same two venues are being bantered about to replace the completely viable IMCDA. Just sayin'... image
  • Jim, I think you spend too much time on ST

  • I've seen that rumor without any shred of evidence to back it. I think some folks were confused and felt that if WTC added a west coast IM then one had to give. Not so. The announcement was expected for May and WTC surprised everyone with the IM Los Cabos intro. There is still talk of another west coast race, but the latest gossip is that it will be a fall race and not announced until late summer. IMCDA is a successful race and the fact they already have the 2013 registration times on their schedule speaks a lot louder than all the rumors out there.
  •  Nah. These are rumors from the most reliable of all triathlon sources, ST. Sounds like if it's up on the website then it's going to happen in 2013.

  • Although there currently is no agreement extending IM CDA, CDA has come to a multi-year agreement to use the roads for the new bike route for several years going forward. I am thinking that is the first step.
  • Races seem to go through a cycle:

    • Yr1: everybody happy to have the race, huzzah, awesome
    • Y2: locals begin to get pissed off at knuckleheads training on the course for months and months. More importantly, since the host city gets the $$$ from athletes while the outlying towns get the pain of the bike course (traffic, closed roads, impact on businesses, etc) with the $$$ of the host town, backlash begins
    • Y3-4: backlash gets louder and louder, prompting rumors of no mo' race, course changes, etc
    • Money, politics, and other variables are introduced and changes are made, or locals are continued to be pissed off, etc

    Examples:

    • This year will be the third (3rd) bike course change in CDA's history, as it's moved to accommodate to objections of Post Falls ('03-'06) and Hayden ('07-11). As this is the first year of the new course, I expect  this cycle above will restart a bit
    • IMWI: passes through a number of towns, roads are lousy with cyclists all summer, ebb and flow of objections from these towns but no course changes or rumors of the race leaving
    • IMLP: town is 100% dependent on tourism, which the city leaders and businesses know, but many of the more vocal locals don't really get that and do NOT like the race.

I've seen this stuff play out over the years at nearly every US venue, mostly not because of the race itself but rather droves of triathletes training on the roads and generally being dickheads: 2-3 wide with no regard for cars behind them, stuff like that.

  • Speaking as one of the knuckleheads training on the course each year I can verify that each weekend prior to IM CDA when the weather is decent, there is a virtual parade a triathletes riding the old course, running and swimming. For several years now, one fellow has even set up a permanent, stocked aid station, with a porta potty in front of his house.

It is pretty cool to be out there among our tri brothers and sisters, and most do follow the rules of the road.  The end of May brings the CDA full and half marathon which takes over a few streets, and wet suit clad swimmers are beginning their steady stream through the main park to the beach.

It  would be nice if all would not act as though the entire width of the road belongs to them but I do suspect that even if all were on their best behavior, there would still be locals who are offended by the entire scene.

There currently is an attempted CDA mayor and city council recall in progress, as many locals are offended because the aformentioned would like to modernize one of the city parks.

    Progress is hell.

  • Rich, I love that perspective. It sounds exactly like what we are hearing about IM Texas.

Yup, it's very predictable. And as Al notes, every IM venue has people that will be pissed off, at something, no matter what. To this, add the zero shoulder and 3 triathletes I once saw pissing on a wall/fence of a yard in IMLou, tacks on the road at IMWI, being buzzed by cars riding from Wilmington to Lake Placid, and it's second same verse, same as the first .

  • Rich, don't forget to add in Y3-4 the crazyass locals that start throwing destructive materials (such as nails) on the course on race day! At IMKY, it happened earlier than Y1-2, and I've also heard it's happened at a lot of the other ones too!
  • I'm way more of an observer/lurker on ST these days.  My favorite thing is to read any thread that talks about how to test, raise or measure your FTP.  It is hilarious what some people think they know.

I don't mind admitting that I've been lurking the Lavender Room for a while. Much more entertaining than the Triathlon Forum. I'm a much happier and balanced person since I stopped posting anything in there.

  • @ Al, that is a kick a$$ super easy retirment business idea...i'm totally gonna buy a house on an IM bike course and set up shop in my front Yard...

As to the comments on IMKY and people laying nails in the road, having lived in KY for way to long while i was in the army this does not suprise me...some real knuckle heads in KY, no offense if your from KY anyone...
  •  I'm in for 2013!  Gonna pack up the family truckster and summer road trip ala the Griswolds to CDA.
