  • Okay Jeff, I'm game. I'll review this nutrition question that you have but then I'm done. Any further follow-up you want specific to you needs to be done via an e-mail or additional consult fee on the additional services page. I am repeating this because you did not acknowledge it before, and you e-mailed me off-line several times as opposed to using the forums.

I'm still using :-) language, but I just want to be 100% clear. Thanks.

You and I talked at great length in our phone call about nutrition. I spoke to directly about using perform and power our products for your workouts, and I recall that she wanted to use infinite to change the concentration. You also wanted to use napalm, additional icecaps, and concentrated caffeine on the bike into one massive dose. I counseled you against all of that but deferred to you since you know your gut better than I do.

But since you're asking for feedback afflicted some quick numbers. Of course, all of the below is calibrated off of numbers for me, a 185 pound guy. By working with the core diet team you may find your caloric needs are somewhat different. But I'm guessing they're pretty close.

Over the course of the bike here's what you took in: 50oz water (which I'm not a fan of because it has 0 value on race day) and 128oz infinite = 1710 calories, or 285 calories per 21 oz. Even though you dialed your concentration down, that's still a lot of calories per 20 ounces. Compare those numbers to 175 cals per 20 oz of Perform.

In summary, you took in a total of 178oz over a 5:20 bike = 33oz per hour of fluid vs MINIMUM of 40oz via Perform using my guidance. So not only were you short fluids overall but those fluids carried more calories per ounce.

Your total calories on bike were 2260. If you took in 2 Powerbars (460) and a Powergel every 30' for the "other" 6 intervals, that's 720 calories. Now you are up to 1180, with a differential to your IMWI cals (2260) being 1080 calories. A bottle of Perform has 175 cals per 20oz, so that would have been 6 bottles of perform for the 5 1/3 hours…clearly not enough. I would have you do two bottles per hour which would have put your total calories as 3340 for the bike ride. Yes, I know it sounds like a lot. The key difference is that these calories would have been MUCH MORE PROCESSABLE. Using a higher concentrated fluid like infinite, and adding things to it like Liquid Shot, reduce your body's ability to process calories.

Honestly I think your dead legs on race day was due to the fact that you had already trained for and racing Ironman. 2nd to that is her execution which we've already discussed above. Assuming you can fix your fatigue and your race execution, then nutrition is then the final piece of the puzzle.

If you are unwilling to reach out to the core diet people, I strongly suggest you at least switch to some of the guidance I talked to you about on the phone, have posted here and other places about how to execute your nutrition… This includes changing your caffeine intake from pills to a steady stream of gels. This is something you can begin a practice now in preparation for Ironman Florida.
