Got it done late this afternoon....legs felt really good for first time in awhile. 12 x1'/1' at 362-380w and around 265 for balance of ride. 95% at 280wNP for the hour and felt strong....hope that feeling hangs around a couple weeks for the test. You Power Clinic guys and gals keep knocking it out of the park. The rest of us are watching......
I slugged it out this morning. It was the second day in a row doing the same workout (I swapped Tues and Wed because I was travelling). Yesterday went great; today, I had to do two 30" pauses during the 25' at 85%. Not horrible, but not great either. I'm looking forward to the rest day.
Awesome work. You power hack peeps are smoking it right now. Congrats!
I did today's workout but have no #'s as I did it old school on my spin bike (star trac V bike) which we keep in the kitchen. Yup! Right in the middle of all the action:-). It was a great ride , I did some FT stuff based on HR and then bumped from there for the VO2 stuff. Phew, that was work. Got in 1:30 hours listening to the radio on my old Boom Box!! I can only get my favorite station in, while in that one area of the kitchen. Kind of bad reception but I love the station so it is all good!
Bah. I had to bag it today due to a blossoming cold. I did manage to get in a nice swim today. Unfortunately, thats what probably put my body over the edge. That and the lack of sleep and being surround by poopy diapers. Hopefully tomorrow will be able to catch back up. Hey, anyone here done Ironman France? I hear the beachside run has good "scenery."
I decided to do my Tues brick run, prior to my Thurs bike since I had the daylight and the roads were not icy. Easy 3.5 mile run, then jumped on the bike.
Tues I did 15 x 1/1 straight, no rest. Not last night. I was going to stick with the plan as written, but changed it up a bit. I was still recovering from the 3 x1000's on Wednesday and was not feeling the love.
Ended up with:
10 x 30/30 (2')
5 x 1/1 (2')
5 x 1/1 (2')
I hit my numbers, but certainly not with the same vigor I had on Tues.
Remainder @ 85% was ok, got it done even though I was ready to call it a day at 45'
Holy Crap D! Just curious if you have a pit crew changing the tire out for you during one of the recovery intervals? Would hate to be on the recieving end of the back tire during one of your RESTED sessions! Way to keep the bar up there for us!
Got both of mine done. I think I've got ADHD, so my main struggle is focus on the bike. I mixed it up a bit on both days...can't remember exactly what I did on Tuesday, but I think it was this:
I think that adds up to 12:30 of VO2 which is between the 10:00 prescribed on the intermediate plan (5x(4x30/30)) and what looks to be 15:00 y'all are doing in the advanced plan. Thursday I did this:
4 x (3x1/1) 2x10@86%
I've been skiing 3X per week instead of doing the 2 brick runs on Tuesday and Saturday. I went out Wendesday night and skied hard for 48 minutes. Learning that warmer snow/weather makes for much faster sking. I went about 8.5 miles, so under 6:00/mile pace. I did 4 miles on a lighted loop a few miles from my house that had a nice mix of hills and flat. A guy passed me about half-way through lap one, and then I just grabbed his wheel (so to speak) and tailed him for the next 3.5 loops. I passed him right at the end when I was leaving, and he went around for another loop. Legs were shaking when it ended, so must have been going pretty hard. One of these days I'll wear a HR monitor just to see how skiing compares to biking/running.
Nice work everyone! Great to see the progress...some of you guys have crazy power...my 220 FT seems like child's play!
I did not think I did that well today, but was surprised by the results on the power meter. I must be on a time delay as now my ass hurts and legs are sore. any recommendations on the type of saddles most of you use. I was looking at the adamos saddles
I ride the Adamos, but I'm thinking about ditching it. I rode 2008 season on the stock saddle on my QR Kilo. It was fine, but I was looking for a bit more comfort. Got the Adamos for Christmas last year, rode it the whole year and never really got it to feel good. It's still on my bike, and after 12 weeks of OS, my @#$ still hurts every time I ride. I don't know whether I don't have it adjusted right or whether it just doesn't fit my anatomy. I'm thinking about getting a saddle from John Cobb or else just switching back to the stock saddle. If you want to try the Adamos out, I'd be willing to mail it to you for a free trial. If you decide to keep it we can work out payment somewhere down the road. PM me if you want to go that direction.

Bill, have you read the instructions on the Adamo website about setup? I'm under the impression that if the Adamo is put on the bike like a regular saddle, discomfort is not uncommon. I believe that they have a video showing everything from fore-aft to tilt adjustment to get it just right.

Friends I am all for more comfort and definitely not a seasoned expert, however, is it possible that no matter what seat you have, you're ass is just going to hurt after 3 hours or more of work on a bike? Just the other day I had a nieghbor in my house whom happened to make their way into my pain cave. First comment out of the mouth was, "that seat looks really uncomfortable" to which I replied, "racing IM is not about being comfortable, you're in the wrong sport if you're looking for an easy ride." I know, I know, it probably sounds a bit harsh.......(please don't hate me.)

@ ;Gordon: Yes, I'm curious since both tests I've done so far were outdoors on the same course. And, both about the same (194, 195). I was disappointed to see that I was at 195 this last time. Was hoping to break the 200 barrier at least. I'll do the next test indoors and see what kind of results I get. Thanks for the response.

You should really be comfortable on your bike all day if it fits correctly. Certainly should not have any real pain numbness going on. Naturally, after 5 hours or so you are going to want to do something else but that is a different story all together. It also may be an issue of just plain getting used to it. 3 hours you should be fine and if you are working hard enough your ass is going to be the least of your worries.
I crashed and burned a little today. I guess you have to have one of these days sometime and just come back stronger next time. Had the 3X1 @ 120% in wu, then 10-30/30's, 2x20's @FTP, and 2X15 @85%. In the 2nd of the 2X20 I blew up a little at 9 minute mark, took 30 sec. to 1 minute rest and tried to get goiing again but never could hold above 97% again. Then in the 2X15 having trouble holding 85% so I called it 8 minutes in and said "the body must need a rest".
On a side note I don't think this affected me today but yesterday at work we were installing an I-beam in this building and I got a 3/8" drill bit drilled into the side of my leg. The bit went into the muscle about 2 inches and we had to reverse the drill to get it out. Not much bleeding and didn't hurt too bad considering but still sore. Anyway I wondered if it would hurt during hard intervals but didn't seem to bother me, but maybe in some other way this affected my performance today. Who knows??

Hmmm, 3/8' drill bit 2' into your leg. Nahhh, that wouldn't hurt your workout.

Wow Trent if I didn't admire you enough already you go and shrug off a drill bit in the leg. Guess I have nothing to complain about so better stop stalling and get on the trainer.
@Bill--FWIW, I say ditch the saddle. PAIN does not go away. Discomfort and "working it in" is one thing, what you are describing is a saddle that needs to be changed, IMO. My saddle woes give me the shivers--so much time and energy trying to find one that worked. I'm really happy with my Cobb V-flow. Rich always says that nothing is comfortable after 3 hours--and I think that's true. But a certain threshold of pain need not be crossed or tolerated. Sounds like the saddle search is on.
Jeez Trent--what a thing to happen. Hope you heal up quick. But I gotta say you are making me smile thinking a drill in the leg might NOT effect your ride. "Put me in, coach. It's just a flesh wound."

@ Bill. I took the adamo off my bike too and switched to a Cobb - Vmax or Vflow plus...whichever was his latest version sans the HC170.
So far I like it equally to better. I do not get raw skin from it like I did with the Adamo BUT I am not putting in long rides yet either. The Adamo didn't allow me to ride 50+ miles without causing skin irritation and/or pain in the soft tissues. Yes, I used bodyglide AND Assos cream, chamois butter, etc.
Just got off the bike. Finally, a Saturday workout that felt good! First one in quite a while. I was strong through the main set, and even into the VO2 work at the end. Then, my powertap battery started to die, and I called it off a little early to download the data, and jumped on the treadmill. Got in some good Z3 time, and feel terrific.
Remember in 2005 when Jan Ulrich was out riding pre-tour (I believe the day before the tour started) and rode headlong into the back of a car...right through the rear window? He was riding like Ancona with only 15' of vision.
Anyhow, he just didn't perform well because that is quite a shock to the body. I don't know how often you get stabbed by sharp objects that are relatively blunt in nature and 3/8" around but I would imagine your body "isn't used to it" and is in a bit of "repair mode". This would stifle the workout a bit.
I give you 2 thumbs up for the effort of even trying let alone hammering your workout.
I felt a little sluggish today and had to throw in 3-4 15" pauses during the workout. I only did 1x15' at the end because I'm going to hit the road this afternoon. Ever since I bought my new bike on Dec. 11, it's been either 1) snowy with 20" on the roads; 2) salty; 3) icy. Every nice day I've either been travelling or it's been a weekday and I don't have good lights, so I couldn't make it outside. Today should be 43 and sunny!
Almost snuck in an FTP test as I was feeling good during the 1st 15, but thought better of it, by the 3 x 4 it was just a case of hanging on in there hoping for divine intervention.
In the Power clinic and had my first "no show day". I just didn't have it in me. I did a trainer ride yesterday so I figured my legs and lungs wouldn't be there for the group ride today and I was correct.
I did get the 10 30/30's in as directed but only 8 mins into the first FTP and couldn't hold the wattage.
On the plus side: We did a hilly ride (Tom Brasher joined us again) and I didn't fade like I normally do after my worksets (because I didn't finish my worksets :-). Towards the end on the last climbs my buddies didn't drop me like they normally do on the 12% grades (196lbs is not an asset on those btw). On the flats coming home I held 21-25 mph into a slight headwind on the hoods of the roadbike and felt like I could have pushed it for an hour easily at that wattage 250 watts...that late into a ride. Can't wait to get the TT bike out on the road and see how I hold up compared to my superior climbing buddies.
So, while I sucked and didn't complete my workout as written I did get 3 hours in and got positive feedback regarding my fitness/power relative to my one of my usual riding buddies who is at race BMI and great fitness for this early in the season. All in all, not too bad.
feeling very mojoless after skiing and was thinking about bagging it...I mean I did get shot last night and all but it was just with a .38 so I do not that that should effect my workout much...off to the dungeon
@Trent - uh ok yeah they used to call that getting stabbed, I could see how that would make the second 20 harder...sounds like a good excuse to me anyhow...
Vince, you rode for 3hrs and call that a no show day?
2x20' @ 306, 302. 2nd set was tough, had to give myself a 30" micro break 10 min in, watts were dropping big time. It was just what I needed as I bounced back nicely.
5x2' were all around 340. Felt pretty good.
I only had 15' of ride time left, so I did it at 89% so I had time to run.
A good 90' at .92 with the peak 60' at .955.
Went out for a nice sunny winter run. 3.5 miles in 25:19 for 7:10 avg.
Woo! That was just a hard workout this morning...from start to finish.
2x20 @ 99% and 98%
5x2 @ 109%, 113%, 111%, 115% and 118%
2x15 @ 82% and 79% (faded)
Entire time on bike 1:56 with with 153 TSS and .89 IF.
Legs were feeling really cooked when I got off the bike but now that I have the treadmill sitting right next to the bike I had no excuse not to try the 30' brick run. Was dreading trying to hold HM 6:45 pace the entire time but once I got going I felt OK. Even did the last 10 minutes at TP 6:30 at 1% incline. That was cool. I think all these V02 run workouts are really starting to take effect for me.
Felt just really tired but in a good way when I got off the mill. A hard, quality 2.5 hour workout on a January morning. That just feels solid.
Legs have had that shaky shelled feeling all day. The 4x1000s on the track tomorrow morning should be interesting. Glad it's a shorter total workout. Meeting up with Keith B at 7am to rock them out.
Got outside, a tropical 42 and sunny, went to Skyline Drive which was closed due to ice but nice Ranger Hazel caucused with Ranger Good News Barnes and they let me hop the gate and so I had the hill all to myself. At mile post 3 it got very icy and I almost busted my bedunkadunk. Outside uphill watts are the best kind of watts. Make you feel like you know sumpin. I spun, I mashed, I stood, I sat. I hurled. All on my private national park road. Your tax dollars at work. Many thanks. It feels a whole lot easier out of doors. Outside and uphill is a good 15-20 points higher than the traiiner. 2x15@329,332 3x4'@351,360,342 1x15@276

Good Luck.

Love having a workout like today!

Trent,
Remember in 2005 when Jan Ulrich was out riding pre-tour (I believe the day before the tour started) and rode headlong into the back of a car...right through the rear window? He was riding like Ancona with only 15' of vision
.

3 x 4 @ 113%, 111%, 110%
2 x 15 @ 81%, 80%
20 minute run @ 8:12/mile
Is it lunchtime yet?
That was not easy after last night
2 x 15 @ 105%, 104%
3 x 4 @ 110%, 109%, 110%
2 x 15 @ 82.5%, 81%
Almost snuck in an FTP test as I was feeling good during the 1st 15, but thought better of it, by the 3 x 4 it was just a case of hanging on in there hoping for divine intervention.

Group + More crushing = Good
