Week 3 - Motivation/Social Thread
Hi "Nov OS 2009" peeps or "Team Turkey" or Team "Holy Crap",
Just a few of our names so far.
Just had a wonderful dinner at our house. Steve and Amy Cramer and their 3 kids brought dinner over. Steve made homemade chilli in the crock pot. We ate it out of huge sour dough bowls and had ice cream for dessert. They were doing something nice for us as we have had a lot going on with Steve's Mom in the hospital and I had some tests done today that have made us quite anxious. It is so nice to have GREAT friends to share your life with. Isn't this all about the journey? The friends we make along the way and the lives we touch?? Well tonight we definitiely celebrated that.
My Steve busted out his bike intervals just before dinner. Poor Cramer had to go home with FULL belly and will be doing his later. Rock Stars I tell you!!!
Ok, here is the place to chit chat. Share stories and get to know eachother a bit better.

Ok Carrie, I'll bite.
I want to share something I am a little proud of. I was self centered and absorbed in the Tri world; have always wanted to give back somehow but found myself to focused on personal achievements. When I completed my first IM two years ago I unintentionally became an inspiration for many co-workers at my job. The vibe hit me and I began pushing fitness to the employees and implemented our organization's health and wellness program for employees which provides $50 for proof of completion to almost any type of physical activity event, whether a 10K run or a heart walk.
Now I have 13 coworkers training for the inagural Santa Barbara Marathon to be held Dec 6. 8 of these will be first time marathoners. I get so excited hearing their joys after they complete a long training run.
Next Summer, I am hoping to convert some in this group into triathletes. That would be awesome!
My longer goal is to form local group to put on a kids triathlon in my community as a means to address childhood obesity.
I am finding my motivation is slowly leaving the world of what I can do on a swim, bike, and run, but more towards who can I motivate to get off the couch.
Dave, that's awesome!
CC- hope Steve's mom is on the mend. sounds like you've got your hands full.
Nothing overly exciting to report on this end. It's busy season in the clinic right now so lots of extra hours at the office and digging out of paperwork. With everyone's deductibles being met and the holidays swiftly approaching, we have a million patients trying to get in and get fixed before the new year. Good group of people though so it's been fun. Lots of characters!
Best quote of the week so far though? my grandmother recently fell and broke her hip/wrist and is currently in a rehab hospital for a few weeks until she can go home. to date she's had a vague idea of what I do for a living, but has never actually been exposed to physical therapy before. So i'm talking to her last night and she says "Leigh! you have to get out of that field while you can. they're evil and you're too nice for that."
Poor, Granny. she has no idea that I'm one of them...
David, that is a wonderful story that totally brightened my day! What a wonderful thing to do. Thanks for sharing. You got my wheels spinning about a few things I've been thinking about!
Nothing too interesting in my training at the moment
But this part of my life is awesome!
this little guy sure is fun!
David, your story is so inspiring!!
Leigh- that is Classic!! We are an "evil" bunch, huh???? PT's are never the most popular caregivers after a painful injury.
I have many, many fond childhood memories of doing fun stuff with my parents and I'm always striving to do the same for my kids.
This past weekend, I brought my 6yo son to a learn to skate program. My dad did the same for me at age 4. Great memories. After that, the two of us went to Star Wars in Concert. What a phenomenal show. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra played all the John Williams music live to clips from all six movies on a huge HD screen and it was narrated by Anthony Daniels, aka C3PO. I was 8 when Star Wars came out and loved all the movies. Of course, I introdcued my son to the movie and he has become a big fan as well. I wasn't sure if he'd enjoy the show but he was enthralled from the get go.
I've always appreciated orchestra music, but have a new found appreciation seeing this live and identifying all the different sounds with the specific intstruments. Great stuff.
If you're a fan and it's in your area, I highly recommend it.
Dave
I missed my bike intervals last night (was it 3x12 or 2x12? Either way, I missed it), but am looking forward to Thursday because of my latest toy...a 52" Sony LCD Flat screen I got this weekend on my way back from San Antonio. That thing takes up half the wall in my apartment, but I LOVE IT! Also, got a blu-ray disc player with it. How's that for motivation?!?
Can't wait to sit in front of that bad boy on the stationary drainer and play a DVD/blu-ray like TDF or IM to get me motivated to complete my painful intervals.
After work tonight, I'm heading to the local lake to get in my run intervals on a beautiful weekday afternoon - we've still got some decent weather out here for a change.
I've got another half marathon in a month (White Rock, here in Dallas) that I want to do really well at.
Very cool things going on in here. Thanks for starting, Carrie. Love the baby pics!
After a bike hammer session with Tom this morning I will be:
Can you tell I just made my to-do list for the day.
Life is good.
I hope everyone has a GREAT day!
I guess the pic means it is true? Dave
Kathy--looking at your picture, I thought YOU were 20!!! Man, I wish you lived closer. I'd love to have coffee with a mom of multiple 20-somethings (or close enough to it.). My boys are 23, 20, 18, and 16. It's been a full life, that's for sure.
Today, I have to get round one of a client's quarterly newsletter to my designer. Starting to feel like that project is l-a-t-e. Then I am going to see my bodyworker dude, and pick up donations for the animal shelter from friends around town. I have to get someone to wash the entire house of windows--don't even know where to start with that. But I decided this year, I am giving up yard work and windows.
I'm in round 3 of bone marrow testing as the donor. Seems my match to someone in the registry continues to look promising. I have to stop at the local hospital tomorrow morning to give them another 5 vials. If that continues to sync, then I'll be considered a match and they'll do what is a crazy in-depth round of blood work. I'm definitely going to the end if this works out. Imagine being able to try and save someone's life???? I'm all in.
Long gorgeous fall walk with Cali ought to round out the afternoon. IOW, I have a very non-exciting day.
Wow. Always knew there were some really cool folks here and this thread proves it!!
Life for any of us is unusually busy just being life, but adding IM Training to the mix and folks begin to wonder what drives you. Like many of you....life is to be lived and you gotta be in the game...not on the sideline!!
1 Wife (not pictured), 3 Kids and 2 dogs means busy house.
Last 24 hours...train, eat, work, 2 science projects, 1 practice, 2 guitar lessons, 1 babysitting job, 1 computer crash, sleep
Next 24 hours...mens bible study, train, work, client in from CA, signing, party, board meeting, train, etc etc
Great thrill this weekend will be watching a good buddy online at IMAZ that is there because of me. Spent countless hours with him getting ready for IMCDA and now he is on to IMAZ. At the same time, training another neighbor who is complete newbie and will be doing IMCDA in 2010. Trying to give back......always.
Philip - great pics - what a cutie (yes, the baby)! No wonder you let your wife get the red car
DA - I am hoping to get a kid's tri rolling in our area too. My oldest has done one in Lexington the last two years, but I'd love to have a local one. I just need to get a few more things off of my plate first!
Linda - so awesome what you are doing!!!
John - we had our BS pack meeting last night and it went on FOREVER! Of course we had to pick up all the popcorn - that now has to be delivered - another thing for the to do list. On the good side BS is such an a great program and it's people like you that make it happen
Dave - I will definitely look into that show - my boys 8 & 9 are Star Wars freaks! I never would have guessed that something I loved so much as a kid (well, I loved Han Solo and Luke Skywalker - they love all the shooting, light saber fighting, space ships, etc.) would still be such a big deal. Being killed with a light saber on a daily basis is wearing a little thin though
Carrie and Leigh - hope everybody is doing better and I am grateful for meanies like you that keep me going!
It's a slow time of year for me at work so I have filled it up with all the dr appts, dentist, etc. etc. Not being able to train is really getting to me mentally (and in turn my family I think!), but I go for the MRI on Tues and get the results on Wed so surely I can live one more week w/out working out! I almost dragged the old Nordic Trac out thinking that wouldn't hurt, but decided I was just being stupid and will continue to warm the bench a little longer. Last two regular season UK football games this Sat and next, where has the time gone??? I love college football and can't wait for the bowls to begin! Now- off to parent teacher conferences and then church today followed by some piano lessons and swim team tomorrow and Friday and throw in a birthday party and a few friends to spend the night with the boys for good measure over the weekend!
Just poking fun at myself.
awww, I love the pic of you and him asleep!!! so cute. and yes I miss babies in the house!! and felt myself staring at the babies today in the grocery store and waving at them! the moms looked a bit frazzled and I well remember the days with that baby bjorn pack attached to me,
remember to let those Moms cut in front of you at the store!! in the checkout line.
my kids are 21, 18, 16, 10 and 8, four boys and one girl and if you have one boy out there, keep going to get more!! they are way fun!! they are like puppy dogs! and all of those cute little blue jeans and ball caps and then they grow up and still wear jeans and ball caps and then start to really stink!!!
I do lots of laundry around here and we all exercise too. there is nothing worse than stinky goalie gloves or a football practice jersey worn all week and then wadded up in a bag!
okay I am unloading groceries so gotta scoot. haven't figured out the sig line or how to put cute little KITTIES??? are you kidding me, a CAT? John...
I think the treadmill running has gone to your head!
ha ha.
my 2nd mt bike race is this Sunday!!! okay everybody will be showing up as it is the last in the season in this champ. series. and everybody who didn't know I was mt biking?? well they are in for a surprise!!
this one is called Attila the Hun. Also this Saturday is son #2 18th bday, a razorback game and college son home and that means his dog too!! Rudy. so busy weekend now that I think about it so I am gonna enjoy tonight cuz I don't have anything to go to!!! and it is cold here and I am baking an apple pie!! with ice cream, yum. I love the smell of chocolate chip cookies too... you know when you were a kid and it was cold outside and you would enter your house and smell something good?? oh, I am a stay at home Mom and make all of my slush fund $ by raiding the dryers and my son's pockets!!! ha ha. Husband travels a lot with work so I am "on call" with chauffering, doctoring and buying goods! I do NOT do school projects!!! nope, don't do 'em anymore!! no, not really, recently I was able to pass a 10th grade "leaf" project, the dreaded collect all the specimens and tape them down and label. I try to act dumb but my kids know that I got a teaching cert in Social Studies from college!

Linda dear you just really made me laugh out loud!!!! I am imagining you and I with a cup of hot chai tea, sitting at Dunn Bros (one of my fav coffee shops in Mnpls) on this cold evening, talking about our family of boys! Laughing about all the stories we have made over the years and possibly crying over some of the disappointments that comes with parenting. I feel blessed to have found you and the many other parent peeps in this great haus of friends!
.
Marianne, you got a GIRL!!!! Hurrah for you
....I wanted a girl everytime, just wasn't in the plans I guess. Love my boys though, they are a blast, most of the time
I am the only female in the Nelson house, even our 7year old yellow lab is a boy!!!
I'm in a weird place now, and I'm not sure how I want to handle it. I had the flu bad for a good 10 days, got healthy for about a week and then got my first sinus infection ever which I'm dealing with now. This has really messed with my OS training. I also have no desire to get on the trainer. During that window I was healthy, I punched through the bike workouts but it was a fight the whole way - from the moment I got up to finishing, my mind had excuses on why I shouldn't start/should quit. That's not how it is with running where I'm not fighting myself at all.
Any strategies for dealing with this besides "sucking it up" and taking it one workout at a time?
Hi Bryan- If it were me I would not try to fight it. I would get on the trainer and just ride. I would increase the resistance as I felt I could and only ride that hard. As you get healthy and your body gets its groove back I would try to hold more consistent intervals. Maybe only start with 5 minutes a little harder etc. Just try to get in the habit of getting on the trainer. It is actually not bad once you get back in te routine. Good Luck!!
