Colorado Al T 'Tude Camp(s) 2019
Where: Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado
When: June 1-8, 2019; May 24-30, 2019; and Sept 20-30, 2019
The Original Bad Ass Camp, now in its 4th annual edition, is currently booked from 2018 campers' and previous multiple-year campers legacy sign-ups. But there are still a number of ways you can join in the fun:
• Sign up for wait list. The camp has 13 beds in my home in Snowmass; all are currently filled for 2019, but every year, a couple of people drop out. Wait list priority will be given to previous campers.
• .Come as an off-campus camper We've had one each of the last 2 years, and have decided that 15 campers is the max from logistical perspectives. We already have one person staying off campus, so have room for one more. If you want to do an Ultra Ragnar Trail Relay with Tim Sullivan and Rob Peters (28 miles per person as a three person relay over 24 hours), this is the spot for you!
• Sign up for the Memorial Day Camp, May 24-30.
• Come to the Fall Camp, which is oriented towards: fall IM races, Mountain Biking for those not racing, leaf-viewing for the truly laid back.
While it's true that many of the campers are Kona bound or trying to get there, there others are just like you - able to finish an EN training plan and participate in an IM, and have fun while doing it.
Cost: $200 to cover household expenses and group food/nutrition/sunscreen/etc.
Current Campers June 1-8:
Jeremy Behler, Trish Marshall, Scott Dinhofer, Danielle Santucci, Teri Cashmore, Steph Stevens, John Withrow, Rich Stanbaugh, Mark Stahlkopf, Matt Limbert, Kori Retzbach, Rob Peters, Tim Sullivan (OC), Al Truscott.
May and September Camps are completely open.
Comments
Al, I might be in just to do the Ragnar race.
So if Understand correctly, you come in, do the Ragnar and go but can sleep at the house ? I just wanna confirm and not taking a spot from someone who would like to bike. On my side I will not bike.
@Francis Picard
That's like going to a fine steakhouse and ordering a vegetarian (or worse vegan!) salad!
Not biking at Al Camp? Blasphemous!
@Francis Picard We have ALWAYS had at least one person coming in from the outside for the Ragnar. @Tim Sullivan and Rob Peters are talking about an Ultra team. If you wanted to pop in on Thursday evening, we can find a place for you to sleep. You could do either the regular or the ultra Ragnar race Fri/Sat. The registration cost is $160US for the regular relay, or whatever Tim charges you for the Ultra.
Then on Sunday, you could go over to Boulder and spectate at the IM there...
But, I agree with Jeremy - why not come a few days earlier, get a room in the village 2 km away, and ride with the crazies?
as a reminder to @Al Truscott & @Francis Picard - I am leaving on Thursday midday, So FP can have my bed. I believe @John Withrow is leaving on Friday? also should check if @Stephanie Stevens is staying for the full camp...
so, @Francis Picard can come earlier stay OC until Thursday, learn how to bike DOWN a hill :-) and then live in the house for the Ragnar...
yes @Jeremy Behler , Al camp IS all about the bike!
I am not biking a bike (other than my city bike sharing system) in 2019 - Also, I would never be able to keep up with you.
@Francis Picard you could do the "candy ass" rides as @Al Truscott calls them with him, Steph, Trish @ @Rich Stanbaugh 🤐
or just show up a day or 2 early to enjoy the mountains, do some trail running and get ready for ragnar!
and if you haven't figured it out, my role in this camp is to stir the pot when possible 😁
sorry @Rich Stanbaugh
@Francis Picard you would keep up once you got a proper fit!
I know (almost?) everyone here is familiar with altitude and physiological changes resulting from altitude, but I did enjoy this podcast focused on this topic. It is obviously relevant to our AlT’Tude BA camp, so I figured I would share. Two interesting notes with potential application (again, may not be news to anyone here): the body at altitude typically uses a higher ratio of Carbs/fat relative to sea level during acclimation period. Low intensity training is potentially more effective than high intensity training at altitude (with “living” at altitude & doing high intensity training at sea level being the Goldie Lox scenario).

Hey Gronk, start sleeping in an Altitude so you'll be better prepared to hang with the big dogs this time around... Just sayin'
Or this, which is cheaper. I used it 2005-2012
Ha ha ha @John Withrow , hanging with the big dogs in CO is a thought that has often been on my mind this OS. I don't think I'm going to spring for an altitude tent (that podcast says you would need to spent 12+ hours per day in one to get the benefits), but I am going to bust my a##. I broke 4.0 W/Kg with today's run test (even at a hefty 196.8 lbs. UGH!). Now to get that weight down so I can hang on the bike.
I am planning to drive out and hopefully start sleeping at altitude 2-3 days in advance to give myself the best chance to hang possible (and be more competitive at ragnar).
Are you going to hang with the big dogs running up and down the mountains at the end of the week of biking? ;)....LOL! (and some nervous laughter :) ).
Woah, I think our emails crossed paths in cyber space @Al Truscott :) . Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out.
@Al Truscott I have a high level of interest in the Sept. date. I'm not sure I can swing it schedule wise, but will monitor this thread and see what I can make happen.
@ Sid - Stay in touch. I've never really had a formal camp in Sept, just folks visiting for a bit. If you can make it work, there is room for sure the last 2-3 weeks of Sept. Weather is perfect then, even better than June
@Al Truscott and @Sid Wavrin : I’m interested in September. IMAZ still a possibility.
@maurice matthews @Carl Alleyne , check it out gentlemen!! There are spots open in June. Join us if you are able. “Guaranteed” boost in your bike fitness!
I'm currently in Snowmass skiing. When I resurface this weekend, I will put out an APB (Forums, GroupMe, emails to former campers) announcing openings in the June camp. Details to follow once I get a current head count...
@Al Truscott I might have an interest, if you do decide to put something together in September.
@Gary Lewis There WILL be a call for campers coming in the immediate future, for the week of Sept 16-22. I am planning on being @ Snowmass from ~ Sep 9- Sep 27, and am open to alternate camp dates if a cadre of people want a different time.
Probably (hopefully) back to Aspen/Snowmass in 2020 for Leadville training!
@Scott Alexander You are gone, but not forgotten...
I am bumping this thread, seeking additional campers. We currently have 12 people signed up for the Spring camp, spread over the time frame May 31-June 8. Some people are leaving as early as June 5, there arriving as late as June 2. This means we have 2-3 beds available for anyone who wants to join us.
If you want to know what the camp is like, check out this EN thread describing last year's camp: https://endurancenation.vanillacommunities.com/discussion/24838/al-ttude-2018-camp-report-parts-i-ii-iii#latest
Current enrollees include: @scott dinhofer , @Larry Peters (Rob), @John Withrow , @Mark Stahlkopf , @Rich Stanbaugh , @matt limbert , @Paul Curtin , @Stephanie Stevens , @Kori Martini (Retzbach), @Teri Cashmore , @Tim Sullivan. Plus me. If any of you have a change of plans, now would be the time to speak up!
If you are interested in this camp, reply to this thread; or, better, email me directly at: al@bikrutz.org

Also, this is a call for Fall Campers, a more informal session designed for leaf peepers, mountain bikers, trail runners, and anyone who has a fall race planned, from Kona/Louisville thru Arizona/Cozumel. I will be there from around Sep13-30, and invite anyone who wants to come train with me. The weather that time of year is perfect, and the fall colors are breathtaking. In addition to getting in some high altitude training for fall races, there is also the opportunity to race in one of the most gorgeous half marathon trail runs in the US, the Golden Leaf on Sep 28, 2019. Registration is limited to 1000, and opens "early April", so now is the time to plan for that: https://www.aspenspecialevents.com/golden-leaf/
If you haven't gotten to Al camp, or are just shy, don't be.. I showed up in 2011 when Al put out an invite to anyone doing IMAZ for what was essentially the first Al camp ever. I made friends there that are some of my besties to this day. I highly implore anyone on the fence about this to jump in, the water is fine!
@Carl Alleyne @maurice matthews
Just dropping this here to keep (part of) fall on my radar. I'd consider dropping in for part of June camp, but I don't think I'll be ready by that point.
