Pre-race dinner

Hiya!

As I was driving to (or maybe from) Cambridge yesterday I wondered if we wanted to try to have a pre-race group dinner.  I realize that goes against the nutrition advice of getting carry out at lunch...

I thought it would be a nice way to meet before the race and for our significant others, if any make the trek, to meet -- so perhaps they'd know some folks while standing around and cheering.  I'm definitely thinking on the early side, maybe even before (or just after) racking my bike - in the 4-5pm  range...

I know some folks who have done this race a few times (I've only done it once) who could probably recommend a spot... and if I can get a headcount by, let's say mid-May, I'll try to get a reservation.  If any of you have suggestions, I'm all ears.

  • Hey, Becky-_

I'd be up for a pre-race group dinner.  I'll be with my wife and two boys (8 and 6).  Last year ate at a nice Mexican place (forget the name) with outdoor seating right on that little inlet/harbor but would  be up for anything family-friendly.

  • Hi Becky,

I'm down there with a large group already, but depending on what they do I may opt-in to meet some of the EN gang. Sorry, I can't commit as of yet.

  • I am in for the dinner. I will be by myself as my husband is totally over the triathlon spectator role!
  • I'm in a similar situation as Cary. Part of doing EMan is to spend some time with my old buddies- so I need to check with their plans first. Last year they had a cook-out the night before the race. I absolutely do want to hook up with ENers at some point though!

FYI- I'll be coming in on Friday and I'm pretty sure that will be an open night. So if anyone wanted to do dinner Friday- just let me know!
  • I will be arriving early Saturday.... and like Kate, alone, since the whole family is soooo over the spectator role..... Unless Cancun is in the schedule.  So I am open for dinner and interested in meeting other EN peeps.

  • cool - looks like we've got some interest... I'll do a bit of searching to see what's around.  I know a friend of mine has a place she likes, will see if she knows the name.... will keep you posted - then try to get a set head count to make a reservation.

  • hey there - just did some quick yelp searches of places in Cambridge (not many) and Easton (more, with more reviews).

I know Kate and I are staying in Easton - not sure where the rest of the folks interested will be - granted, Easton is only about 15 minutes from transition.

Definitely still open to suggestions - but here's a run down of places with decent reviews on yelp in Easton:  Scossa (italian, $$$), Rusticana (pizza), Portofino (Italian, $$), Out of the Fire, Mason's.

the place my friend recommended is closed, she thinks - she did a drive by for CheseMan last year and had no luck.

  • They all sound good to me!
  • I just remembered the name of the place we had dinner at last year: Snappers

    http://www.snapperswaterfrontcafe.com/

Not technically a Mexican place but lots of Mexican items on the menu as well as paster.  Great outdoor deck for dining overlooking the water.

  • I'm in the same situation as Nemo and Cary... with local friends. We're staying in Salisbury. Will have to wait to commit.

Becky, there are a lot of good spots in Easton. Cambridge not so much. Thanks for the heads up on the Cambridge spot, Chris.

  • I'm also coming down with a group from NY.  Can't commit to a dinner, but would be great to meet the EN team - maybe on race morning?

  • As a few others have stated, I am doing this race with some of my local tri buddies from NJ so will most likely be eating with them at the Hyatt resort but would love a meetup.  Anything planned?

  • thanks for the recommendation, Chris - I'll check it out.  Relieved it's not a Mexican place (not sure how the belly will handle spice before a race)... but it did look like downtown Easton has lots of options...

I'm planning to wear my EN kit, so hopefully finding each other race morning won't be too tough.

  • hi all... well, really Kate, Scott, Chris (and anyone else who can join us). I took a look at some menus, for snappers as well as the places I found on Yelp (in Easton).
here are the links if you want to check them out: outofthefire.com (some specialty dishes and pizzas); masonsgourmet.com (fish, chix, steak); portofinoeaston.com (pasta); scossarestaurant.com (pasta).

I think I'd like to try Masons or Scossa.... I don't think Snappers would do well for me pre-race (but post race fajitas and margaritas might be just the ticket). But would be game for Portofino, too. I think the menu at Out of the Fire is a bit limited (although the place looks really cool - I get the sense it's ecofriendly).

I'm okay with making a 5:00 reservation - hopefully the soccer game will be done. Let me know your thoughts and I'll get it squared away (right now it looks like the headcount is 8 - including my DB and Chris's wife and kids).
  • I can find something to eat on any of these menus. Masons or Scossa would be fine with me. I would also be good with pizza from Out of the Fire. Calling Chris, where would your kids find something they would like?
  • FYI- I just confirmed with my MD friends that they are planning a get together Sat night- so I'm definately out for the EN Dinner.

That said- I arrive on Fri evening and will be around through Mon Morning. I will probably be finishing the race much later than most of you (dang age group wave starts always have me starting next to last) but if there's any way you guys could hang around for awards, I would love to see you all!
  • Nemo - I'll be hanging around after for a while. I also get in Friday PM and leave Monday AM. Looking forward to meeting you guys!
  • Cool! I'll look for the flip flops :-)
  • Kate,Becky, Chris. any of the narrowed down choices are fine with me. I can find somethingthat willagree with the stomach pretty much anywhere. So let me know thefinal location and time. Looking forward to meeting you all.

  • Just and FYI I ate at Suicide Bridge last year on Friday and it was a great buffet of seafood.

I may be doing that with my friends as well this year.

I'll see if I can talk my group in to going to the team picked place so I can meet some of you pre-race. Please keep me posted on choice.

There's a somewhat interesting story behind the flip flop avatar, without to much detail - my feet are "internet famous". If there's interest I'll post it to the club house.

  • Post away Blanco!

  • Hey, all--

Sorry to pull-out last minute but just learned that the family we're staying with is planning on having us for dinner Saturday (I originally thought they had plans to be out that night).  I also just realized that bike racking doesn't start until 2pm so I'd have to wait until after the soccer game which means I probably couldn't make dinner until closer to 6pm anyway.  So I'll keep a lookout for EN kits during transition set-up and out on the course and hopefully after the race.  Looking forward to meeting/seeing people.  12 days to go!

  • It's all coming back to me now...

One more restaurant from last year - We ate pre-race at Bella Luna (Italian Cuisine) they had an Eagleman special.

    Bella Luna
    (410) 221-0110
303 High St, Cambridge, MD 21613
  • Too bad - but have a good time with your friends, Chris.  Once we get it squared away - will post.  So far it will definitely be 3 of us and it sounds like we're all open to whatever... Cary, I'll check out Bella Luna.

Dan (the DB) made a dinner suggestion - the hotel restaurant at the Grand Hyatt, I think.  I asked him to remind me of the name and when I get it I'll see if they have a menu online to post... would like to try to make a reservation this week.

  • Yes yes yes Cary, we want to know the Flip Flop story!!! Please post to the Clubhouse!!!
  • FWIW- The Hotel Restaurant at the Hyatt is awesome, but for me would be too tempting to over-indulge pre-race - we ate there post race last year.
  • Okay, the place Dan mentioned is at the Grand Hyatt hotel, called Blue Point.  No menu was posted - but he said it has lots of great fresh seafood and is on the water and very pretty.

The link for Bella Luna is www.bellalunarestaurant.net

Seeing Kate this Sunday, she said she was game for the pizza place (out of the fire), which looks good to me.  I think my order of preference is:  out of the fire, portofino, blue point, bellaluna...

As far as i can tell, right now we need a reservation for 4 (me, Dan, Kate, Scott) - so I'm optimistic that won't be a problem if I call this week... I'm thinking of shooting for 5:30.  let me know if that's cool, if my order of preference is cool, and if other folks can make it... I'll make the call(s) on Thursday...

  • Its all good, I am easy.....
