Week 6 Roll Call

First quarter is done.  I thought I'd try and get some of the lurkers to post to see how they're doing.

We have lots of folks that post results of their workouts, but I think we have even a larger group of folks out there just gettin' it done.

Let's hear from you, too.

Everyone, how do you feel now that we're 25% done?

I'm enjoying the recovery day.

Dave

  • Feeling like a baby's diaper

  • Loving the recovery day as I try to kick a bit of a cold.

  • feeling pretty good so far....30/30's coming though

  • hey Dave~nice work

School concerts this week so Tuesday's workout are going to ge done today! Lookng forward to it!
  • Ready to settle in for a long winter's OS. I like the part where the workouts have become part of my routine.

  • I'm hitting the workouts at my target zones and fatique is pretty managable, so that counts as going well I guess. I don't feel great, but I don't feel bad either, just moving along.

I think I miss the tests every 4 weeks as I liked the reassurance that I was getting strong or motivation to step it up.
  • So far so, good - although I am not looking forward to tomorrow's 2x20. Ugh!
  • Have to agree with Matt right now.  Miss testing every 4 weeks.  Probably because I know a bump is coming and want to be there already.  Being a koolaid drinker I will toe the line though and wait until week 8.

Feeling pretty good.  Had to "abandon" my run yesterday because of cold and eyelids freezing shut, so gonna do that run today on treadmill.  Means tomorrow's 2x20 will hurt.  See in Week 9 that the 30x30's are coming........

  • Tonight I'm actually going to get off my arse and really start to focus. Hopefully the personal issues of late are behind me.
  • Love the EN OS Plan....hard work, but it gets over and done. Added bonus, you come out in the spring ready to lay it down !!!!
I learned last year to stick to the plan....when the plan calls for rest, then rest...don't try to be a hero, cause there's always next week.
I've just added some initiative to my OS by signing up for an early Half IM....makes focusing a bit easier.
Larry, as for the 30/30's...not sure about everyone else, but that stuff is cake compared to LLLOOOOOOONNNNGGGGG FTP intervals. I'll trade them for 2x20 any day.
  • For the first 4 weeks I was feeling great, but this last week kicked my ass a little. It was the first time fatigue factored in. I found a way to dig deep and get through the workouts (Saturday's was the worst), but it was a struggle. As many have mentioned in previous posts, this is where you build the mental six-pack.

Even though this is my first time through an OS, I feel like a bump in my numbers is due and I'd love to test now to see the progress; but I'm going to stick to the plan and wait. Results should be interesting. I'm also looking forward to the second half of the OS as I'll be doing it with a PT. Training by HR is fine, but from all the postings regarding power, I'm ready to make the jump.
  • All good here except I'm still trying to get my running legs back. I had a flare up with my hip a week ago so I backed off all last week. I got some ART that really helped. Going back 2 or 3 more times. I think I'm getting close, however, I don't think I will be able to hit the ground running with the January OS running program.

I decided to start swimming masters while I'm still recovering. I went twice last week. The first night was brutal but was much better the second time out.

I did have a revelation over the weekend. I don't really care about next season all that much. I'm in a build up to IMWI 2011. Takes all the pressure off.

  • Feeling pretty good overall!
I am excited to do my 5K run test I feel like i have gotten alot of my old runnign form coming back!
My calf did act up in the cold weather this weekend which is odd. So i hope todays Rest will get its stiffness down and it will be fine without any additional rest! 2x15 should let me know how it is early tomorrow!
  • @Matt--GOOD ;on you for realizing 2010 is not your year. I twisted in the wind until I figured out 2009 wasn't mine. I wasted a lot of time fretting for nothing. Here I am ready to go again. It all came back, but I was trying to force I-don't-even-know-what for most of last year. When I finally let it go, it was SO much better. You'll have a lovely year getting stronger, but without all the other stuff you're head's just not into right now. I wish I would have figured that out in December!

@ Phil--great to hear the run form is coming back. You sound really great. Hope the test goes well!

Huge thanks to Matt Samojeden who has no idea how much his reminder about CT calibration has changed my world! Got lazy, wasn't calibrating high enough, and my workouts weren't making any sense. That, and the fact that back-from-the-factory the calibration is reaping lower numbers than when it left the house. It was all messing with my head. FT test fixed the head space, and the calibration reminder got the workouts straightened out. I'm plugging along as my usual self. I feel remarkably good, I must say.

  • Looking good, Billy Ray!
    Feeling good, Louis!
    Love that movie!

Last week fatigue kind of got to me but did the proper rest and now feel pretty good. Legs still are a little tight but am getting the feeling that will be the case for the whole OS. Just need to keep hitting my workouts and getting the proper rest and recovery. Been having fun and love the quick workouts! Love getting it over and done with as I do not have lots of free time.
  • definitely trying to refocus and hope the legs return a little. this thread was perfect timing as i'm going to go to bed early and i've been watching my diet almost 1 entire day. the new thought is "you can always be reborn".
  • HA! Keith, so funny. I have tried to get my diet reborn today too. I give myself a B/B-. I will rebirth again tomorrow.

  • Have been hitting all the workouts. The bike FTP workouts are mind numbing, but in the recent ones I've learned to shut my mind off and just get them done. Erg mode on the CT makes it easy to zone out and keep in zone. Favorite workouts are the weekend bike with the fairly challenging brick. Feel great afterwards. Definitely learning that the rest days are an important part of the sequencing so as to be able to hit the workouts hard.

Last week I started to see an uptick in the Watts I'm holding for the bike so gains are being made. For the run, no real progression yet - did a 5K this weekend and a bit disappointed, but early in the plan.
  • I'm in the same boat as Matt as far as getting my running legs back. The pool runs don't seem to have the impact that real running does on my legs so I'm feeling pretty good.  Of course, I have the classic EN legs: feeling great while walking on flat, but then climbing stairs Owy owy OW OW OW!  I remember last year wanting to hijack a scooter wheelchair from my patients (how WRONG is that?!), but no so much this year. Must be I'm adapting or less evil this year...

  •  Hi, All...

I've not been posting much. Just getting the work done until yesterday. Diet!!!!

I had increased 5# since beginning the Nov OS, partly due to decreased aerobic hrs/wk but more because of very poor food habits. I really am hooked on "hyperpalatable" food- quick starch, sugars and fats and will tend to binge without thinking.

I just got Matt Fitzgerald's book- RACING WEIGHT (released 11/1/09) and decided to get serious about eliminating refined sugars, fats and salt from my diet. My diet is going well- no sugars, no starch- lots of fruits/vegs/whole grain but I've had major sugar withdrawal symptoms- irritable, worn out, unenthusiastic, achy for these last 3 days.

I was planning a 5 mile z1 run followed by my 5 mile official EN Nov OS workout since I am building up to a HM 2/7/010. After 3 miles at Z2 I began to bonk severely- Bridge to Engine Room-> More Power!-> Sorry, captain! Dead in the water!. Only did 5 miles. First time I've not nailed a workout in the OS so far.

I suspect that I didn't have enough carbs before the workout to replenish my glycogen stores. I'll try the 5 am Boost tomorrow to see if I can do better on the Tues am bike intervals.

BTW: 1. RACING WEIGHT is well written and offers lots of nutritional research references and useful hints for reaching race weight.

             2. I'm finally do a good calorie count using  a Droid app called Calorie Counter with a web face called Fat Secret. It's quick and easy to log on my phone and is also available for Blackberry users. Take a look.

  • Present and accounted for... Looking forward to 2 x 20' in the morning.

Lacked discipline last year. Had fun, achieved great balance, and still had some good races, but hoping a disciplined OS will help me PR again in 2010. I turn 42 later this month... Wondering when advancing age will overtake advancing fitness. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Thanks, all, for being generous with the posts. Watching y'all get fast definitely motivates me to finish every interval.

  • Feelin' pretty good so far. Workouts are good hard work, but feel great after. OK, much after ...

I think the strategy of adding 1 watt every workout is still paying off and not making me too trashed. Started @ 231, now @ 243. Will be interesting to see what my FTP test will result in.

Run is coming along fairly well also. Looking forward to the new vDOT test there as well.
  • Feeling great these past few weeks, have seen large improvements in the 5 weeks so far. This training that EN has supplied is just exactly what I needed to help me improve. I am looking forward to the test in 2 weeks. I also got the "racing weight" book and it has been helpful. RnP it would be great if you guys came up with a beginner, intermediate and advance plan for nutrition. I would purchase it in a heartbeat. Something that is software integrated so that it knows how many calories you are able to eat after a workout that you entered in WKO. Just food for thought
  • Coming in to week six feeling good, well tired tonight but that's not fatigue from working out and I just need an hour extra sleep and all will be good.

I only have 4 weeks of OS in as week 1 was a write off with work travel.  I received my powertap to start week 2 and have seen good improvement in the bike.  My run is just starting and I'll be kicking it in with the January OS people.  Nutrition wise I have checked in at 219, down from 230 at the start of weigh in Wednesday's.  With my birthday over the weekend I am not sure I will even hit that mark so I iwll have to refocus to take another 3-5 off before the Christmas meals happen.

I hope everyone keeps posting as it definitely motivates me to keep at it.

  • Hitting the workouts pretty good.  I've been able to meet most of the intervals, and feel pretty trashed after.  My only problem is the high intensity stuff makes me want to graze like a cow.  I've gained 3-4 lbs since the OS started!

  • Did I really read Dan Kerr's post correctly???? "Looking forward to the 2 x 20"?????  I have had this workout circled for 3 weeks.  I HATE THESE THINGS.  They have psyched me out for 3 years running now.  My wife's solution to my mental state? "well I think you should do 4 x 20 so that way 2 seems easy".  Note to self, Barb is not allowed anywhere near RnP.

Loved the "looking good Billy Ray" reference.  One of the all time classics.

I feeling good 25% through, now if I can just get these damn 2 x 20's done without 1) hurling (we may need to change from team Holy Crap to Team Hurl) or 2) quitting.  I always go out way too hard in an effort to prove that I've added 15 watts to my FTP.  Those first 5 minutes seem SSSOOOOOOO easy!!!!

Good luck folks.  Nail em tommorrow

  • not looking forward to tomorrow's 2x20's on the trainer.  Time to build some mental toughness.

  • Probably gonna bail on OS.  Going under the radar for a few weeks.  C-ya.

Probably gonna bail on OS.  Going under the radar for a few weeks.  C-ya.

Are you trying to bait us?

  • Well I am most likely going to miss my first workout ... kinda pissy about it.
had my calves tighten up on me pretty good Saturday during my brick but just played it off to being cold. Ran again Saturday and one was still tight so I figured all was well. but after a day off my lower left calf is still kinda hurt when i massage it(not the it hurts so good kinda hurt). So i think i am going to skip Monday bike and MAYBE Tuesday run and see how it feels day to day after talking to my orthopedic surgeon grandpa giving me Achilles horror stories from calf issues. I dont want to make a minor calf strain into a big deal seeing as we still have 14 weeks to go in the OS. So I am pissed to be missing the first 2x15 but ill get them next Tuesday =(
