Week 6 Roll Call

Comments

  • I'm 25 for 25 on the workouts so far but I can see that there will be issues over time in the next 3 weeks, just got to keep trying to pack them all in.

I can feel that I need a good bump on the FTP numbers, the week 1 test was my first proper ride with a powertap (I finally got it the day before the test!), but I can see that 5 weeks later I'm hitting the numbers just fine, not easily by any stretch but with no dizzyness or vomitting.  Runs are going well, but not looking forward to 2 x 1.5 mile this week!

    Good luck everyone

  • Coach P is here but secretly not looking forward to 2x20! Can't we stay with those happy 2x15s that let me overachieve just a little bit!!! image

  • 2 x 20' done, only on 2' rest b/c I was on kid duty. Both at 315 Pavg..psyched to be done!!!

Did I really read Dan Kerr's post correctly???? "Looking forward to the 2 x 20"?????

Scott... I need positive self-talk to keep me going. Kind of like in the movie Animal House... "Thank you, sir, may I have another!"

I'm in the same boat as Matt as far as getting my running legs back. The pool runs don't seem to have the impact that real running does on my legs so I'm feeling pretty good.  Of course, I have the classic EN legs: feeling great while walking on flat, but then climbing stairs Owy owy OW OW OW!  I remember last year wanting to hijack a scooter wheelchair from my patients (how WRONG is that?!), but no so much this year. Must be I'm adapting or less evil this year...

I wouldn't attach "wrong" to hijacking a scooter. Work works, and so does theft. They may thank you for it later. Or sue you. Either way, you save YOUR legs and isn't that the most important thing? Kit, don't lose your perspective. Scooter theft is speed entering the body. You need a scooter, you take a scooter. It's all about YOU.

I'm stalling like it's my job......cold, snowy, don't want to do intervals.....ok, here we go.....

  • Kit- can totally relate to the scooter hijack! I've only got walkers and canes to steal and they don't interest me (well unless it's the walker with the cup holder for my coffee and the built in seat; then I'm game). However, I do take all of my opportunities to sit to which my patients whine and I say "you're forgetting. this is physical therapy for you, not me. now pipe down or I'm getting the big leg weight for you!" image

Feeling good on this end. "diet" was on life support last week but maybe will be "reborn" soon. have to say- pretty happy to be missing those 2x20 today!! love the taper. my workout today is 2xloads of laundry with a vacuum break and the remainder of my time doing z3 dishes (although come to the think of it- the "easy to clean georgie foreman grill" is probably closer to z5 efforts...).
  •  Hello All,

Finally checking in.  Took yesterday off completely and even stayed away from the computer.  Week 5 was by far the toughest week due to dead legs.  However, the legs bounced bag for Sunday's run and I feel fresh today.

I am a little mixed about the 2 x 20 tonight.  Kinda in that that nervous state but still interested in how the pain will  feel mode.  It sick but is similar to the feeling when I give blood.  I know the needle stick will hurt but always fascinated by the pain.

    Don't think bad of me...I'm normal...right!?!

  • I'm regretting the way I started the Out Season. I finished my last race of the year--Longhorn 70.3--on October 25. I took a week off, then had the flu for the week. I then started the Off Season a week behind. I guesstimateed my FTP at 225 because I didn't think I'd give a good performance due to the flu. I think I estimated too high. I'd done 2x20 with 5 minutes rest at 225 on October 1, which felt easy, so I estimated 225 as my FTP. I've since hit every interval but one, but not until doing the 2x15 this morning did I think that I could do the 2x20 EN test protocol at 225.

I also skipped week 4 to catch up to the group. I chose that week as it was almost an exact duplicate of week 5. (I didn't want to go straight from 2x10 to 2x15 without the 2x12 in between.)

The runs have been great. Here I think I may have set my VDOT too low. I did a 10k at the end of week 1 that resulted in a VDOT of 47.03. On Sept. 27, I did a 5k at 50.64 and a week later a 10 miler at 49.25. I set my VDOT somewhat in between at 48.5, which leads to a nice even 7:00 T pace. I think it's a little slow, but we're testing soon, so I've just been aiming at 6:55 or so. I running a 10k on Sunday to replace the Sunday run, then a 5k on Dec. 19 to replace the test.

This may be sacrilege, but I've been itching to get into the pool. I've swam twice since Oct. 25, and would like to go every 10 days or so just so I don't forget what I'm doing. Nothing hard, I just enjoy swimming and want to keep my head wet, so to speak.

I'm looking forward to the 30x30s in a few weeks. I haven't done that workout before, but it doesn't sound too bad. Perhaps those will be famous last words.
  • The coaches, the plan and the team continue to exceed my expectations.  As usual, the lowlight is the hole I have dug so far with a         -35.6 TSB, however, so far having not missed a single workout, I am not willing to back off and allow the TSB to better align.  Yes, I am tired mentally and physcially but I also believe there is a fine line between driving fitness and going overboard.

I really appreciate the daily opportunity to journal and read in this forum.  Go Team!

  • Freezing up here in Calgary with lots of snow on the roads, so back to the trainer. Felt good on the bike tonight with slight nausea as I was sucking for O2 on the second 15.

No powermeter so no real numbers to report.   Just holding the avg speed set on the first test and pulling the avg higher, with occasional tests into the upper limits

  • I am behind on week 6 posts, sorry but I have taken mostly "rest days" since one day before Thanksgiving!!!  piriformis, possible strain in left hamstring, sick husband and then sick son, cold weather and holiday preparations derailed me!!  anyway just checking in, doc gave me prednizone yesterday so four days of that to help "quiet" down the inflammation.  I did run one mile on Monday and it hurt!!  so swam on Tuesday and endurance shopped on Wednesday!  and hope to swim today.  This will be my longest break in training and I will report in when I actually "do" something!!!  lol.  I have patience this season cuz my A race is Wisconsin... so pretty determined to get the left leg healthy!!  in the meantime, three DH work related holiday events boom boom in a row, a son's first bball game, a mission Guatemala meeting, college son and dog Rudy coming home, puts my weekend very busy!!  I hope the rest of y'alls training is going well!!  gotta scoot.  m

  • Hello my  Nov. OS friends.  This is my 1st posting with the Nov. group, which I signed up for when it 1st started.  Unfortunately back in Sept. after doing some heavy lifting I injured  my lower abdom. that I had hernia surgery on 2 years prior.  Saw the surgeon again thinking I gave myself another hernia, but he told me I popped a titanium tack he used to hold the mesh in place and tore between the ab wall and mesh.

Nothing to do but let it heal, 6-12 weeks.   I could not run without pain, but strangeley enough I could bike.  So I started the bike portion of the OS with all of you, and enjoyed crushining myself with the workouts.  In December when I could run again, although not completely healed, I decided to restart the OS.

I am so dissapointed I can not go through this OS journey with all of you, but just wanted to let you know I read your postings every day, you are such an inspiration, and am so impressed with how all of you are crushing it.

Keep up the great work !!!!!!!

  • Just wanted to say Hi to Marianne and Bob.

M- sorry to hear about your leg. So much going on around here I think I missed how painful your leg was. I knew about all the other family stuff. And the shopping IF and TSS!! You are a hoot and such a joy to have around here!

B- yowza! Sounds so painful. Glad you are almost fully better. Also glad to hear you are doing the bikes and getting mojo from the posts!!

  • Im still here! Finally getting back on the training plan now. Bike should be here soon. Just started running in Newtons, and boy they are making me sore!

Anyway, does anyone know the code for Wheelbuilder again? Thanks!

Greg, just tell Wheelbuilder you're a member of EN.  They'll honor the discount.  That's what I did when I got my wheelcover this summer per Rich's instructions.

  • Dave,

Glad to see you wanted to chat with us lurkers.  I must say I ahave had some problems getting it done sofar.  Bike and the pain cave are fine but my run is just totally by feel at this point.  Plantar is still lurking but getting much better and I am only averaging 15 miles per week very easy.  I have however replaced that with alot of swimming until the plantar is repaired.. On top of that work has me doing a fair amount fo travel that is now slowing but I have been amiss on this forum.  Trying to get back that mojo.  I feel all the good vibes and wish everyone well. Happy Holidays and here is to keeping the wieght off (ok how about down)

  • Hi all,

The OS is going well - except for the last couple of days when a cold found its way into my head.  Let's just say, my nose is running a LOT more than I am.

    Mike

  • All is well in the great white north. I have continued to do all my runs outside despite the sub-zero cold this week. My legs were totally fried after the Saturday bike/run, and I had a really hard time getting going this morning on the run. Got it done, though. One of my goals was to dramatically increase my consistency, and so far I've only missed a couple of the Tuesday brick runs. I've switched to doing them in the evening (bike in the morning) which works out better in terms of timing.

I actually think I'm finally figuring out how to do the FT intervals as they seem more manageable this year. I tested at 204 to start, but have been targeting 220 for the last few weeks since that's what I was hitting in the FT intervals. My approach has been to start the first song or two at about 205-210, the next song at 210-215, and the remainder at 230-240. It makes for a nice looking upward sloping line on the chart and seems to work better than trying to jump right in at 220 and hold it steady for 12-15 minutes.

Bob - take care of yourself and don't overdo it!
  • major loss of mojo this week.  Only got in 4 hours of training.  Really falling off the wagon and need to pick it up this week.  It seems like I can't find any consistency on the bike.  My Wed and Sun runs have been ok, but I haven't had time to get in the brick runs.

Need to focus this week and try and get back on track.  Anyone with extra mojo please send it my way.

  • Dave,

Whatever extra mojo I have is yours. I just tell myself that its not how you start, its how you finish. I've been consistent so far but if I end up missing a few, I'm not going to let it derail me as it has in the past. This time of year with weather, real life jobs, etc...It happens. Hope you get the consistency back soon.

    Chris

  • Dave: I'm one of those out here 'just gettin' in done'. I'm having a ball nearly puking on each bike session but I'm definitely feeling strong. We will see when we retest next week, right??? I want to see improvement and yet I don't, because that means all the zones get bumped, ahhh, more puking. I'm in the Chicago area and we've been blessed with the weather so far, only had to come inside to run due to schedules (as in, my children are not old enough to be left home alone...) not road conditions. Happy holidays and get it done next week!!

  • Week 6 was my toughest week so far due to dead legs. However, I've always gotten the work done. Haven't skipped out on any of the training. This week was tough because I strayed and did an easy 6-hour trail ride in the mountains vice the 1-hour bike intervals on the Thurs before and doubled up on a run soon thereafter (did my EN training run in the A.M. and then turned around and did a 5.5-mile lunchtime "social" run (~8-min pace) with friends). I underestimated the added stress from the "social" run (still wasn't rested from the 6-hour bike ride) and found myself not having enough rest. Now that I've had today's (Monday) rest I feel good this evening (it's 1 a.m. as I write this). I'm looking at the scheduling nightmare that I'm approaching during the holidays. We will be visiting family for the holidays (23 Dec through 9 Jan...19 days). No biking! Will make time to run. This really upsets my EN sked. We're shifting gears in training too!!!! Plus, I have a half marathon coming up on 20 Dec, which I just noticed today is a week with 3 rest days due to our 2nd testing phase coming in week 8. That means I would lose the rest day on Sunday and have the bike test on Monday and I REALLY want to do well on the bike test to improve my FTP. I have to figure out how to shuffle this mess around to not lose ground on my training and live to die another day. I'M STRESSED just thinking about it right now.
  • I'm in Week 6 this week.  Did the 2 x 12's on the bike this morning.  WHEW!  The good news is I crushed the first set.  The bad news is...I crushed the first set!    Have to say that my mph has improved by 1 mph this week!  I'm happy.  But by the second set, I was fried.

The run wasn't a whole lot better, after a 5 miler on Sunday.  I've been training on a bike at the Y, rather than my trainer.  Haven't gotten a training wheel yet, and don't want to ruin my Specialized rear wheel.  I could use someone's extra mojo too!

  • Im in week 5. Yep I said that in last message...hahahaha.  But week started with 2 by 12s also. Seems like that has been the last few workouts. Has gone better each time and I think I'm actually excited by the next one 3 by 8s...those will fly by....yeah...right.  LOL.

My watts have been a little higher on the last two two sets of 12s but now I'm thinking maybe it's cuz I gained a few winter Lbs. Nah...it's the EN strength coming on.  Yeah...I will stick with that.  Actually doing these with slightly lower HR too.

I'm not the 100 percent animal some of you all are. I'm up at 96 percent...which is actually a bit of an increase from the 94 percent so I'll take it.

What has helped alot, as I mentioned in other forum, was getting an in door training tire.  The ride is much smoother.

Okay was on computer way too much last night so getting off now.  Happy pain caving everyone.

  • I'm one of those people out there just getting it done. I'm really busy as is most everyone I'm sure, but I just can't seem to find the time for the online component as much as I wish I could. I do really love the EN OS plan. I do all my workouts to the best of my ability. However, I suffer in the cold and have been banished indoors for riding and running mostly - image. Keep up the good work all. I hope after grad school is over I'll be able to give more attention to the forums.
