Week 7 - thoughts

Feeling good but scared of the 2x20 (4) for the morning.  Really is just painful.  Sometimes it almost seems worse than doing a test because when I am testing I have a clear goal in mind.

Regardless it is great to be feeling this way and working this hard smack in the middle of the holidays.  Helps to know that everyone else is out there doing the same thing.  Even better to know that the rest of my AG is likely taking it easy while eating every cookie in sight and that I will be starting ahead of the game once the new year rolls around.

How is everyone feeling?

  • My legs are sore and I'm beat.  Other than that I feel great.

    Dave

  • Feeling like someone has beaten my stems with a sledgehammer, but a good beating!  Had forgotten about the 2x20 tomorrow and now I am scared!  Figure I will put on some good tunes, put the head down and hammer but hopefully not....!

    Still looking forward to testing!!

  • Still trying to crawl back from a run injury...so on good days, I feel hopeful/tell myself that IMMoo is 10 months away/I'll be just fine. On bad days, it's hard not to feel like maybe I'm not orthopedically meant to run/I should hang up my running shoes and just ride my mtb full-time.

Otherwise, feeling really, really strong on the bike. I'm kinda excited to do that Power Clinic test tomorrow...

  • Let's see...how long does adaptation take? Six to eight weeks, right? So, as if on cue, my yoga pants are feeling tight in the thighs and butt.  Third OS, same deal at the 6 week mark. Weight is the same, so all that interval work is building muscle, baby!

I feel lots of things this time around. A lot more patient, knowing this is a long haul, and a long year. I'm a lot better at recognizing when I really need a rest, and take the full day. Like today. I started to feel a little frayed around the edges yesterday. I might have ignored it in year's past, but it's just not smart for me to do that.

I've done every workout to date, and feel very, very good. No undue fatigue and I am keeping up just fine. Pushing hard, and trying my best to do the work 100%. 2x15 tomorrow, and that's about right for me at this point.

    Rock on, NOS!

  • I am easing out of this group and into Jan OS for a fresh start since I have missed 3 weeks of workouts! haven't done it formally though. See you at the races though and in the forum! good job everybody. m
  • I'm with Marianne. I'm also going to back out and join January's group. I believe that the biking that I've been doing has impaired the healing of my hip. I totally backed off last week and am significantly better.

  • Big, major, life changing, stressful workday tomorrow that is going to make me at least push back my trainer workout for the first time in NOS.

Not getting crazy about the numbers, good or bad, just going to keep doing the work, working the plan. Definitely feels good to be working hard, need always to be thinking recovery. ABR- always be recovering. No brick walls.
  • I took last week off cept one run to try and gte my calf and achilles setteld and so far I think it worked.
Im excited to get my weekly routine back It was HARD to not be doing the Workouts!
Happy to be back in the pain cave in teh morning!
  • Was thinking exactly what Linda said... I could actually feel the adaptation in my legs last night. Makes sense after 6 weeks. Anyone else get that morphing quads feeling? So weird!

Affirmed by noticeable bump in my numbers Saturday and Sunday. Feel really strong today, but being a good boy and taking it off entirely.

  • Hi !

I am resting today big time!! Had a great week 6 and need to absorb some of that work!!

We usually start our week on Monday but I won't this week. Steve said he might. We host track on Tues which will screw up the order of things so I may need to drop one ride this week all together. No worries though. All the work done with proper rest is going to build one very strong engine!

Thanks all for your motivation and friendship!

    Carrie
  • Marianne and Matt... sounds like January is a good (and very smart) move for both of you guys. Enjoy the rest of the holidays and take care of yourselves and you will crush it starting in January. Knowing when to stand down is very difficult and a tough thing to do when others are crushing it in the group.

As for me... i'm just along for the ride. I'm getting the work done at the target zones, but not putting up big numbers like others in the group. At the same time, other than once (my own stupidity) I haven't really been to sore or fatigued.

We'll see what the FTP test says in a week...
  • I am also  going along with Marianne and Matt, switching to january. Overdid it while in Az and Knee flared up again. Lost too many workouts, best to start over.

  • Although I've got a mid-April race, NOLA70.3, I will probably move to the Jan OS schedule too. I've lost too much thus far, to be in Nov OS.
  •  I've been packing on the pounds, so I'm adding some EZ running to try and get my fluffyness under control. I'm still on the Ironman diet and its really starting to show.

I feel strong on the bike and don't really expect much speed on the run. Based on last year's data, i'll see the big jump once i stack some mileage under  all the hard stuff.

@ Chris, totally agree about 2 x 20 outside of a test hurts more. Same pain but no reward

  • Hanging in there - stable.  Just got out of the pool and feel much better than in the a.m. - active recovery, focus on diet and quality sleep can do wonders for the next session!  Good luck tomorrow morning peeps!

  • will probably end up twisting this week around and trying to just get the work done. sitting here right now- my legs are cooked. hopped on the bike for 30 min, slapped it in the small ring and spun away. tonights homework will be stretching, rolling, trigger pointing and likely some ice. time to get my recovery mojo going. image

like Matt said, smart move by Matt/marianne/kit etc. Keep the big picture in mind and get healthy.

  • I'm feeling pretty good today.  I did not push the weekend session like a mad man and just went slightly over FTP.  I only have to do 2X15 so not as much pain or gain as the 2X20 people.

    Get energized for tomorrow.

  • So far, so good. As I said before, I think I estimated my FTP too high at the start because I skipped the test due to the flu. I think I've been training the entire time at 105-108%. I'm not sure whether that's a good thing. If I actually due the 2x20 at 225 watts, that really should be a 5-8% gain.

I"ve shuffled things around a bit to do the VDOT test in a 5k on Saturday. This week will be normal through Friday, then the 5k on Saturday, followed by Saturday's bike on Sunday. Next week, I'll take Monday off, due the bike test on Tuesday, then resume the week.
  • legs felt good saturday and yesterday. i've been trying to run lots of hills on the sunday run. switching up the schedule this week to see if it allows me to be more consistent in running. going to bike tonight even though legs are trashed. trying for the tuesday intervals, but if i only get the thursday workout done i'll just flip 'em. i'll then run tues, take wed off and then decide intervals or power hack on thursday.
  • Feeling beat today. I might get on the bike for 15-20 min to spin and push some blood around. I will also hit the TP tools, foam roller etc. It's nice to have the forum, and to read about the others getting the work done. I'm usually getting my training done after work, so it helps to read that others actually survived the morning workout! Everyone try and keep it positive after the bike workout tomorrow morning!
  • I'm with you Chris, I do those 2x20's early before the kids are up and there's no time to take in nutrition (other than half a banana) prior so I'm literally crying by the end. I crack open a window in the cave so I don't melt and I'm sure my neighbors are wondering what sort of torture is happening behind the glass!

Good luck, hang in there and know that there are many of us out there in your shoes! I'll be wheezing/crying/puking, whatever by about 6'30 am CST tomorrow, and then I'll go for a run that includes uphill strides, really???

  • Tonight is the 4 week anniversary of me taking a nasty tumble down the river valley while out on a beautiful midnight mountain bike ride - and cracking a few ribs in the process.

Missed about a week of running initially, but then was able to resume in maintenance mode at Easy pace.  Yesterday was the first day I tried running faster than that and it felt pretty good.  Will be skipping the Run test next week so I don't set back the healing process.

Fortunately (and somewhat ironically) the ribs really haven't been an issue on the bike (trainer), so I have been crushing those workouts - and replacing the odd run workout with a ride.  Expecting a decent FTP bump next week - some from fitness and some from experience.

Will be trying the Power Hack test tomorrow instead of the 2x15 - I need to sit down and do some calculus to figure out my approximate targets for that.

    Great to read everyone's progress!
  • great thread, some nice reading that is allowing me to procrastinate getting on the bike for my 2 x 20's.  I'm similar to most in that I can certainly feel the difference in my legs through 6 weeks, pretty pumped about where the bike is as this point.  Last night walking around though my legs were totally trashed - I need to follow suit with you all and break out the TP gear - either that or go find a masseuse.  way to long since I've had a nice massage.

I think I also fall into the category of the age grouper who is eating everything in sight!  I am cutting out the vino (my biggest vice) for the next few weeks to really get my body comp where it needs to be.  Other than that. I'm actually looking forward to testing.

ok, i guess procrastination time is over.  2 x 20's here I come.  catch you back here in a few

ABR - I like it. Smarter is better than harder.

  • 2 x 20' done as 315 and 300. I totally blew up on #2 and was lucky not to blow chunks. I have been "feeling" sick last few days, but this really cemented it. Was okay for first 20' (aside from mental fatigue) but right out of the gate on #2 I had no turnover. Ouch. I suffered through it thinking of you guys (THANKS!), but am glad that's behind me. More rest is needed...been staying up too late trying to bust out these new training plans on top of Xmas stuff...

    Good luck all!

  • it is time for a major league HOLY CRAP.  Just wrapped the 2 x 20's and like Coach P, I totally blew up on #2.  I contemplated just hopping off at least 4 times but decided it was better to get the time in even if the wattage sucked.  Had absolutely no power in my legs.  Stats for the ride - first int  came in at 103%, #2 was a struggle to get in at 96%.  Absolutely brutal.  BUT a big thank you for forcing me through it.  Last year I absolutely would have hopped off at min 7, 10, or 13.  Good luck all, hope yours is better than mine.

40' run is moving to tonight.  No chance for a brick this am

  • Did the power clinic protocol test this morning and I'm a candidate based on avg. watt numbers (having trouble saving computrainer file and uploading in wko+, maybe because I'm only a trial member there) - question for group, how close is avg. watts compared to pnorm? (when I plugged in wattage manually on wko+, it gave the same number for pnorm)

Normalized Power = Average Power * Varibility Index(VI).

In other words if you road very steady with a VI of 1, they would be the exact same.  FWIW, my VI on tests on the trainer are usually 1.00 or 1.01 so NP and AP are usually the same.

NP becomes much more important for a 2 x 20(2') because the 2 minutes of rest changes the VI and than you NP is typcically higher than your AP.

  • After a full 8 months on just the road bike, i feel good and hitting the bike workouts but I'm behind on some of the runs. first ftp test was 240 so ready to see some new numbers. Also no swimming for 9 months so looking to get in some active recovery and stroke work. I'm a firefighter, work one/off two days so easy to get in the workouts. Looking for the holidays to be over and start the work for a great build to lake Placid.
  • Good Morning everyone! I enjoy reading all your updates and training virtually with you all.

I wanted to share an ABR( always be recovering) story as I hope it will be a source of inspiration. BTW - Chris Malone -I love the ABR acronym!!

I ran a long run Sun with the intervals and about 1.5 miles from home in the pouring rain the last of my 4 wheels fell off. I skidded into home on the chassis and was completely done. Like OMG I am so tired DONE!!!  My legs were DONGING for a few hours. I was a bit freaked out and knew I was at THAT place where you need to recover before doing anything again.  Steve massaged my calves and feet and I wore compression sleeves all day. I even iced my feet and calves.  By later in the day my legs felt great.

Monday I rested. Steve and I usually do our bike on Monday and he kept egging me on that we needed to do the bike. I stood firm and said NO...I need to rest!!  ( He skipped his too...)

Woke up today to host our team track workout and  rolled over and told Steve NOPE, I am still going to rest.Called to cancel the babysitter and slept in 3 more hours!! My legs feel great but that fatigue and ache on Sunday skeered me so I am still resting. He hosted 15 peeps this am at track and did his 4 x 1 miles.

I will get on the normal EN schdule tonight with the Tuesday bike/brick and do my 4 x 1 miles alone on the track tomorrow.

YOU all know how hard it is to rest but it is SO important in the goal of getting stronger.

Thanks for reading and sharing in my journey to IMSG. Baby steps to a strong bike and run engine!!!
