Week 2 - Motivation/Social thread
Hi NOS peeps,
We made it through week 1
This group is special and Team Chavez is thrilled to be a part of it.
Our littlest member of our Team was sick all weekend and is home from school today. Steve and I are tag teaming the day. I'll run her to the MD then go to work late and he'll work from home after that. The life of IM parents. He got a swim and spin class in( he teaches) early and I will bust out my intervals on the trainer after work.
To all of you thinking these intervals seem easy on paper....isn't that the biggest misunderstanding you ever experienced
Outside I seem to be able to hit them more easily. Inside is where the character building takes place. The building of the mental six pack. My plan for the OS is to ALWAYS try, DIG deep and then maybe a little DEEPER, and keep BELIEVING that I WILL get stronger. ONE WORKOUT AT A TIME!!!!

Guaranteed, the tremendously good energy you will experience here, together with the real support from your teammates to help you succeed will buoy you more times than you can imagine. Without question, at some juncture someone will make a comment, and you find it resonates. Then when the workout gets tough or you want to quit, you'll find yourself channeling the person, those words, the vibe--and you will hang on and get it done. Happens a lot around here. Carrie was right by my side on my ride yesterday--no doubt about it!

I know it's a day off, but I'll live to rest another day--like later in the week when it gets colder. It's 68 degrees outside, and glorious. I'm moving one of the short runs to this afternoon--I'll go out for a frequency jaunt for about 30'. While still in the early weeks of the OS, I'm still swimming with my master's groups--albeit abbreviated/easier versions of the workouts. It's so fun, and I love it. Did you know that if you find the catch, and fix your head position when breathing, you can automatically take 6" off your 100?
College apps and essays for my 3rd of 4 sons now completely D-O-N-E! Amen and Hallelujah! Huge relief.
WELL.... I am soooo procrastinating!! I just asked Steve.." you know why I am pushing it off??". He said " yeah, because it is FREAKING HARD!!! Just get on there and DO it!!!"
OK, I'll report in in about 1 hour. Uuugghh!!
Carrie
( we are a day ahead most weeks due to Tuesday track we host and this week we are going to Disneyland Wednesday-Fri!!)
Hit the hills for the 3 x 8' this morning. Felt good, and I think I hit it 100% (or so.
Linda, the weather was beautiful this morning, wasn't it? I was so happy I got to run outside in shorts. 55 and overcast is runner's dream weather.
I also forgot how much fun it is to get up and do workouts, knowing you all are doing the same thing.
What a great thread! Thanks for starting it, Carrie. I thought about what you had written: about digging deeper. So I peeled myself off the couch tonight for the bike workout after riding mtb for 3 days in a row. The weather has been FABULOUS! A real gift! I surprised myself with how strong I felt (thought the mtb was going to leave me hosed) and rode.
At the end of the last interval, with 79 seconds to go, I thought,"It's only 79 more seconds. That's how long Noodle took to eat an entire pint of ice cream!"
Remember Lisa, sometimes in the training, less is more. Sometimes a day or two off , or workouts scaled way back is better than pushing. As Patrick says, "don't run the plan into a wall." As the training progresses, it can be a fine line, a very exacting dance to know when to step back from a workout. It's all well and good that we motivate and push each other here--except for those times when one shouldn't be pushed, if you know what I mean. Always work hard when you need to, but definitely step back from time to time if /when necessary. The work is very, very taxing here. Time off and proper recovery is as important, if not moreso, than hitting every workout just because it's on the schedule.
As motivating as it is around here, one can get carried away. With the intensity we carry here, it's imperative to be smart, smart, smart for oneself.
I want to share the humorous litany of my morning activities with y'all because if there was ever a group who "gets it" it's my EN friends:
Up at 4:55
Puppy morning constitutional, ball throwing in the dark with lights on the backyard, short walk
Headlamps on the bikes because it was 57 degrees out in November. Out the door at about 6:00.
Home at 7:15
Protein gulp, shower, dress for work
Take son to school
Drive to take puppy to the reservoir to chase balls and run like a mad dog with the other pups.
Home, throw breakfast and lunch in backpack.
At work by 9:15!!!!
8:30, and it's now time for some boob tube for me! This day is done!
Kudos to everyone for getting out there, Keep it up! Wow! Headlamps, intense but cool idea! I have been working out in the evenings as I can't seem to get up in the mornings with it being dark, but I find that if I keep moving when I get home, change and just get on the bike it helps. We did the ride outside this past weekend and the weather was truly awesome for the Northeast!
It is 10:40 PM, I am back at my work but this time in the ER with my mother in law. She is very sick and being admitted. We have been here for hours. She is waxing and waning and we feel so bad for her. She is dozing off so I will write to you all.
This day has been crazy to say the least. Track in am. Work. Had a patient pass out on me while he was up walking and in the bathroom standing. I had to lower him to the floor and strained my back. Had to report it " just in case". I go ice myself and put my own back "in" by lying on my back over the edge of a treatment table and popping it into place. Been icing and moving. Went back to finish my caseload then home for dinner and to start packing for our trip to Disneyland tomorrow and we get a call that Mom is in the ER.
So we are here waiting for her to be moved to her room. Wondering if we will actually go on our trip tomorrow, have not packed, supposed to leave at 7am. Going with another family. I am just going minute by minute now. Breathe. Pray. Hug Madison who is also here with us. Just was told she'll get a room by midnight. Oohh boy.
Ok peeps. Thanks for listening.
Carrie
Carrie--status? Hope things are more settled this morning. What a day/night you had. That is how you spell S-T-R-E-S-S.
Andrea--those halogen headlamps are incredible. When one is coming in the opposite direction, the bike like a motorcycle! I only had to use it during warm-up since the light was coming up anyway. If I'm not scared riding with a light i the dark, so one would be.
Hang in there CC. We brought Joy's dad back to the hospital yesterday. He's getting operated on today. Group hug eeryone.
Awesome stuff in "the haus".
CC...best of luck with mom and the back! Don't need that added stress but you are a champ and can handle anything!!
Prayers are with you and the Chavez clan.
Love the motivation. Have to say I am jealous of those who get to ride OUTSIDE in November. Unfortunately, it is already pretty cold here in CDA and the garage is home for the next 18 weeks of OS!!
On the bright side, I will run outside come hell/high water unless it is just way too miserable and today will test that therory!! Supposed to be low 40's high 30's and rain!!
ROCK ON!!
My back is getting better. Sore right where the rib was out but that should subside.
We are on our way to Disneyland. Will post pics on FB.
Steve's Mom is admitted to hospital and the meds are working.
@Dave- will keep you FIL in my prayers as well and your family.
Hugs, CC
Glad to hear Steve's mom is doing better, and you are on your way to Disneyland. Hope your back & rib feel better too
Dave- Hoepe your FIL is doing better also.
Been through that over the last 2 yrs. Tough to see your parents ill.
Hang in there. My thoughts and prayers are with you
Hope everyone else's relatives are on the mend. Funny how quickly priorities change, eh?
Have fun in Disney CC!
You've got to love the little old Italian ladies. My family was filled with them.
Hey all. I've also started the OS with some adversity. Spent half the week before we started in bed with the flu. Week 1 went OK, but week 2 brought another sad surprise. About 5 minutes after I left to do the Sunday run that didn't get done, my brother-in-law called to tell us that my wife's father passed away. When I got home it was a house full of 3 sad grandkids and 1 sad daughter. The rest of the week has been spent out of town with family. We just got back from visitation...all 3 of our little ones (10, 8, and 5) were crying their eyes out. They're really close to this set of grandparents, seeing them almost every weekend at our lake place in the summers. I'm sure the funeral tomorrow will be more of the same. Needless to say, training has taken a backseat for a few days. I'll catch back on with you guys come the weekend! Peace, out!
Bill,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
Mike
Oh Bill, I'm so sorry. Take care of your family - we'll be here thinking of you.
Your post made my heart ache. I am so sorry for all the sadness your family is feeling. Lots of love coming your way from Team Chavez.
CC
Bill so sorry to hear that. I was very close with my grandparents an even though I was an adult when they died, it still hurt. I'm sure the kids will remember him always.
I'd like to throw some good news into the thread and let you all know that Joy's dad is out of surgery and doing well.
Bill, so sorry to hear about your loss. Condolences to your family.
Hey Bill:
My older brother passed away 2 1/2 weeks ago. So I know what you are going through. Kinda hard to get your head "in the game" when you are dealing with this stuff. Take you time. OS/EN will be here when you are ready. Our prayers are with you and your family.
