Trainer Road For OutSeason UPDATE!

  • I am using the workout creator to make all the workouts till it's all done. It's easy but I can't imagine doing 150 of them yikes. GREAT WORK!
  • Do you think trainer road can replace trainingpeaks?  Thinking cost wise. I have been using trainingpeaks for a 3 years and like it's mobility and don't want to add another $ to the budget. But, replacing the $119.00 annual premium trainingpeaks fee is a reasonable trade-off.

  • I need to try the Beta. I was afraid of potential bugs, but Creator sounds like a hot ticket.

@George - I don't think TR will replace TP anytime soon. There is no upload and analyze for rides done outside.
  •  Workout Creator process has been handed off to the EN Admin.  Required me to document the process and also create a screencast walking him through how to create a workout.    I have asked for a completion date of this Friday (not sure that is feasbile).

    More soon.

  • You know, we only need these a week at a time - nine workouts/week (3/week each for Beg, Int, Adv), should be max a one man-day per week effort. No need to slam through all of them all at once, can't the ones for this week be posted as soon as they are ready?

Is there a way for those of us who have already created the workouts to post them via TR or some other means so others on the team may use? Athough I am having fun making my own personal workouts, making the warm-up and cool down EXACTLY how I want it.

  • Hi Al:

Totally get it!  The key here is it is more than just creating workouts.  All the workouts are going into a "members only" area for EN folks.  So there is not only the workout creation but also authenticating folks as members in good standing.  How we do this, how we scrub the list monthly, etc.  This is all brand new for TR and EN.  We are the first team to go through the process.  So it is a learning experience.

Please hang tough for a little while longer.  We are working on it!

NOTE - Please, please please, do NOT publicly share the EN workouts any of you create in TR.  Remember this is EN's (aka RandP) intellectual property.  Thanks for your understanding.

  • @ John ... as an OB MD, I am a professional at waiting; it's literally what I get paid for. No problem; I'm still in the "having fun" phase of palying with a new computer process , making up each of the workouts. Sigh - off to do today's version in my "Power Penthouse" © (gotta protect my IP).

  • Where are you guys finding the Beta version to download that has the workout creator. I've found some canned workouts that are close, but would like to get them right. I've looked all over their site, but maybe I'm missing something. Thanks
  • The TrainerRoad Beta software is here:

    http://www.trainerroad.com/install

Scroll down a little and you'll see it.

  • After a bit of technical difficulty with Workout Creator and the awesome support from Nate and Reid at TR, the admin is off to the races adding the OS bike workouts to TR.

Now that things are moving forward . . . .I am looking for at least 5 quality assurance folks who have created TR workouts in Workout Creator and can help make sure the OS workouts are all correct.  If we have ~ 125 bike workouts and have 5 folks it can be split up into 25 or so per person.  If we have more folks, great!

The key is to make sure the workouts have the correct warm up length, the MS is correct and that is ends at the correct time.  Most are 60' and a couple of 75'.

There is also a naming convention that needs to be followed.  I will create a screencast explaining everything so you all know what we are looking for.  It will be pretty straight forward and shouldn't take too much time.  Hoping we can start on this in the next few days,

Please email me directly at ENRaceDirector@gmail.com if you can/want to help.

Thanks folks.  We are getting close.

    Stark out!

  • Not sure if this is the correct thread for this, but I just got my Garmin USB stick. I want to convert over to TR from HR. How do I go about doing this?
  •  @Aaron:

    1.  Download Trainer Road at http://www.trainerroad.com/install.

    2.  Get set up with virtual power (I assume you're using VP) according to your trainer model.  The Trainer Road website has some great videos for how to get set up.

    3.  Start riding.

    Very easy set up.

  •  You can use TR with HR as long as your HR strap is ant+ capable.  If it is garmin or wahoo it likely is.  Just plug in your garmin stick, start the trainer road app on your computer and under the devices tab look for heart rate monitor and click on search.  It should find it. I put my stick on an extension cable so it is closer to me on my bike, for better reception.  I use a Mac and found that turning off time machine during the workout stopped intermittent interruptions in data transfer ( but this may be peculiar to my machine).  If you want to use power with trainer road, you will need an ant+ power meter, or you can use the trainer road ' virtual power' function, if your trainer is one that is supported.  This measures speed of your rear wheel and plots it on a speed/power graph to estimate your power. So to use this function you will need an ant+ speed or speed/cadence monitor, and add it in the devices tab just like your hr strap.  Calibrating the virtual power function and ensuring its accuracy over multiple workouts is another whole discussion.

  • Hi Folks:

Looks like I have my 5 volunteers to help QA the TR OS stuff.  Thanks!  If anyone else wants to help, email me.

Also, because people tend to do their own types of warmups we are going to set the beginning warmup portion at 12' and .65 IF and flat lined.  Then the intervals and the end at the typical @ 80-85%/Zone3/Mod-Hard for the remainder.  Make sense?

    John

  • Any chance we can make the warmup a bit shorter, like 7' or so? People can always warm up for 5 mins before they press start on TR if they need more time. The only reason I mention it is sometimes I'm time strapped for time and need to cut my w/u a bit short. I know you are supposed to be able to click forward in TR and move ahead in the workout, but that has never once worked for me on many many different attempts.
  • i propose the standard warmups should be their own separate TR workouts.  If you want to do the standard warmup, you load that into TR and save it when completed,  then load in the day's  workout and do that.  If you want to do your own warmup, just load in one of the free rides and do as much as you want, save it, then load up the workout.  This way all of each individual's workout data will be saved.

  • I have the following Cycleops trainer: http://www.amazon.com/CycleOps-Bicycle-Trainer-Mounted-Shifter/dp/B000BT8VOM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1352560894&sr=8-6&keywords=cycleops+trainer

CycleOps Mag+ Indoor Bicycle Trainer Trainer with Bar Mounted Remote Shifter

How do I know if this is the 3, 4, or 5 model?

I am trying to sync of TrainerRoad with my devices. Do I need to test first or can I just use it with my workout today without testing and still use my HR
  • Is there a way to access the workouts being created?

Is there a way to access the workouts being created?

Unfortunately, no.  They are in my private personal account and then they will be moved to the EN account when we are ready to go live.

Hang tough, folks.  We have had some issues with the volume of workouts going into one account (or some code thing Nate is working on, I think).  Server errors.  I just received the latest non-public Workout Creator from TR this morning to start using.  Nothing like being an Alpha tester.  :-)  I will be sitting at Blackhawk Starbucks in Danville, CA near Draegers market for several hours today working on this project if anyone wants to come by and buy me some java. :-)

    More later.

IMO this is a good way to do it.

  •  Getting close.  RandP have lots of instructions to go with each workout.

  • Workouts have been created in Workout Creator and I have handed off to or QA volunteers for review.

Next step after review will be to hand off to Nate and Reid at TR on Tuesday morning and they told me it will take probably 2 days for them to get us all set-up.  I will then document how to sign-up for the "EN Members Only" section in Trainer Road and then we will open it up for you all.  Shooting for Friday launch.  Cross your fingers.  :-)

Also, remember we are the FIRST tri team (or anyone) to do what we are doing on this type of scale with Trainer Road. This is BETA.  There will be issues from time to time.  So be easy on me as we go down this road.  OK?  :-)

I LOVE being cutting edge and pushing the limit combining tech and tri training!  EN ROCKS!

    Hi John,

I believe that you can start the workout at whatever point you want by placing your mouse at the point where you want to start, clicking and then getting on to ride.  When your mouse pointer is on the graph, a line should appear through the graph and this is where you will start time wise.  I did this accidentally one time and couldn't figure out why my ride started in the middle.  It seems that you should be able to move the cursor to 7' prior to the actual workout and then go from there.  Maybe this was a bug that got fixed as I haven't done it in a while....

  • Keith:  You are correct.  I have had much offline discussion about the warm-up section and the consensus was 12'.  If folks want a longer warm-up, cool.  If shorter, move the slider to the warm up length they want.

I have officially handed all the workouts to Trainer Road this morning.  Will keep ya all posted on the progress.

  • Awesome work, John! I know these were hard yards!
  • Just want to give a BIG shout out to these dudes for helping with the Workout Creator QA stuff:

    Greg Babb

    Ryan Miller

    Brent Eritou

    Marc Robards

    Chris Kuebert

    Thanks, guys!

    John

  • I must clarify - although I had hoped to be able to help, due to "un"-timely travel circumstances that left me sans computer for the weekend and yesterday, I was of no value to the process. Ryan, Brent, Marc, and Chris did all of the helping. These guys and John are truly all stars!!
  • TR status update as of 5 minutes ago for EN project:  "We're still fixing bugs.  I hope to get a version out for final testing tonight or tomorrow."

    Stay tuned.
