OK, folks!  Who is IN!

 2012 Holiday Run Challenge

8 Days, Tuesday to Tuesday, 12/25 to 1/1

Stay fit and have fun this holiday season -- Join your crazy EN teammates for an 8-Day Run Challenge. This is a solo challenge to keep all of us fit and active over the gap week between Christmas and New Years...especially if you can't score a trainer to ride on! If you want to you can "align" yourself with a Team just by putting a team name in the tracking spreadsheet.

So lace up your shoes, fire up your Internet connection and start planning those runs!

Point Scoring:

1 point per mile run.
1 additional point for each hour run (whole numbers only 1, 2, etc.)
1 additional point for a run in sub-32 degrees weather.
1 additional point for each mile run at (or above) Threshold Pace (10k pace).
5 bonus points for running all 8 days of challenge.
Note: This runs on the honor system, please only post your actual run results.

Rewards:

Fitness is it's own reward...really!
We'll have to brainstorm out the rewards based on who enters (age, gender, etc., are options!).

Points Example:

If it takes me one hour to run 8 miles in 40-degree weather with 2 miles at threshold... I get 8 x 1 point for distance (8), 1 point for 1 hour of running (1), 0 points for sub-32 degree running, and 2x1 point for the threshold miles (2)...I will have earned 11 points for my run.

Instructions:

Join the 2012 Holiday Run Forum Thread (YOU ARE HERE!)
Invite teammates to participate; consider forming a Team!
Enter your name in the Spreadsheet (be careful not to fudge anyone else's info!).
Calculate and update your Holiday Runs daily, starting on 12/25, using the calculator tab.
Log daily workouts in spreadsheet tool. Talk smack + post pics in this forum.
Earn points and get fit!

FAQs:

Where is the spreadsheet?

It's online as a shared Google document here.

Do I need a Google account?

You shouldn't need one, but you _do_ need to be careful when entering your data that you only touch your space in the spreadsheet and not anyone else's!

How do I create a team?

Just write in a team name and the sheet will start calculating your team data.

How do I post a picture?

Go to the 2012 Holiday Run Challenge Group and then click on “Attachments, “ choose your pic file and hit “Upload.  Once uploaded, choose the “Insert Image icon...and voila, you're live!

Technical Difficulties?

  • Folks:

Looking for someone (or many of you) to be the cheerleaders for this challenge!  If you are highly upbeat, love to run and want to give back to your teammates, make yourself known in this thread and have at it!

    John

  • Says we need permission to access the spreadsheet.
  • Me wanna run some!

John, the spreadsheet won't let me enter anything - gotta unprotect it please.....
  • Dag nabbit!  I think I have fixed it!  Try it now.

    Rookie mistake.

    John

  • Thanks John. You're the best.

OK gang. So I decided I needed a team - Leaping Lemmings. It seemed fitting.... following the crowd.... right off the cliff to my peril. Except, appearently that is a total myth.... spawned by Walt Disney back in 1958..... http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2004/04/27/1081903.htm

Anyone who feels inclined to follow me, as we head into oblivion is welcome to join me.... or not.....

I think I may get started today... got kids flying in from Tacoma today, China yesterday and Florida tomorrow... the clan is comming home!

    Happy running!
  • @Steve - thought about joining your team. But since this is a big challenge for me as a non-runner, I thought I'd name mine "Team Texas" in honor of all Big Things here. Almost four years here and I think I'm going native! image

  • I need to work off all my cookie pounds!! I am in....
  • Thanks John for putting this together. Count me in.

Daytime highs up here in Ottawa will be hovering around 18 degrees, so lots of bonus point incentive to get out the door!

  • We are in!! Ultra trail season - so running our brains out, anyway...

One question - for the "under 32 degrees" bonus points, is it one point for the run-in-the-cold or one extra point for every mile in the cold?
  • Just 1 point for the temp - NOT per mile as I understand it...

And on the hours - are we rounding? 1:35 counts as 1 point or 2?
  • One hour this morning for 6 miles and will pound out another 60-90 min this evening. I'm one determined sob to nail 100+ miles. I will update my section of spreadsheet this evening. Minimal low back pain but diet under control so weight will drop. I'm hoping under 170 no pain. Looked at last year log and I hit 170 last Nov during the OS and had low back pain then.
  • Well, only 2 points for me today. Guess I should have done my T run outside in the snow/rain to get some extra points...but alas just did it on the TM.
That was one hard run after the FTP bike on os!
  • Christmas day... supposed to be relaxing, right? Look at the NOS schedule. 2x20 @ 100% FTP, then add another 30 mins @ 85%. Total 90 minutes on Trainer Road with and IF of 0.87. Then listen to Carl talk about nailing 100 points on this challenge. So drag my belly full of brisket off the sofa, and take three little girls out for 7.6 mi at 0.9 IF. Sorry, Carl... that's all I've got for today. I need some apple pie! Merry Christmas everyone!
  • Woo hoo. 1 hour, 2 miles @ FTP, 7 miles total @ 30 degrees. Now off to catch a Plane to Orlando. No more temp points for me this year. Have a great one everybody!
  • Just ran after a huge Christmas dinner...waited 3 hours but it felt like I just ate. Was paced by my 16 year old daughter with her new Christmas Garmin. She tried to kill me! Got 8 points though..

  • @ Jeff - 1 point per whole hour.... no partial credit - thats why I ran another 25 minutes on the DM tonight. I wanted the full hour. Getting an extra 3 miles, 1 of which was at TP doesn't hurt either.

AM run outside @ 24* 5.5 miles in 44 minutes included 2x1 @ TP (actually TP -20 secs).

5.5 points for miles, 1 point for temp, 2 points for TP = 8.5 points

PM run on the Deadmill 3 miles in 24 minutes, including 1x1 @ TP

3 point for miles, 1 point for TP, = 4 points

    1 more point for time 0:44 + 0:24 = 1:08

    Total for the day 8.5 + 4 + 1 = 13.5

  • I'm ready to do this! I should be starting out with negative points though for all the peanut butter truffles I consumed last night!
  • Well didn't get a second run in yesterday so playing catch up to hit 100 miles.

    Today so far:

    60 min= 1 point

    7 miles= 7 points

    2 at threshold=2 points

    Total= 10 points

Well after lunch jumped backed on for 3 more miles.  Total points = 13.

  • Chilly one in Ottawa today, when I left it was about 12 degrees, with a windchill of about -4. Much more impressive in celsius as the windchill is -20!
Haven't run much since IMFL so speed isn't a factor, but did just over 4 miles this morning. Also ran 2 miles on Christmas morning, before presents, coffee and Baileys!
  • So wait a minute - let me get this straight... I ran for 50 mins this morning for my NOS VO2 intervals. But if I go run for 10 more mins tonight, I'll get to add not only the extra mileage, but also a "bonus" point for running for 1 total hour?? Good gravy! Wish I had realized that this morning and just kept going!
  • 4 miles today = 4 points
    1.5 miles of VO2max work = 1 point
Pretty effin' cold and windy (31 and storm coming) = 1 point
Like Gregg, I didn't think to run the extra time for an hour but I have more important things than a silly run challenge to interrupt real NOS work... ;-)
  • 1 day behind but a good day today. 1 hr, 7 miles, -1C,3mi above threshold = 12 pts.
    • Hard to run outside yesterday with the windchill but got back on track with a solid 12 points today. Lots of tempo miles are fun on day 1 or 2 of the challenge but I know day 8 will be tough just like the last 4 years.
    • Hail to all the Holiday runners!
    • John
  • Second run in today; still reeling from some kind of infection or cold, but getting the running in. Striving for consistency over flashiness this year. And safety. image

Great to see all of you here!!!!
  • Did my Wed run outside at the HS track. 20* F, milky moonshine, minimal breeze.

    20* F = 1 pt
    67 minutes = 1 pt
    8.35 miles = 8.3 pts
    1.5 miles @ IP = 1.5 pt
    1.5 miles @ TP = 1.5 pt

Total points today = 13.3 Yippee!
  • You guys are working hard! The big snow missed me, so I was able to get in 17 today. Time and temp bonus. Keep it up! Oh, and feel free to join the Donner Party. We'll be having a pot luck at some point.
  • Added on some extra running @ LRP pace after my VO2 intervals to bring me up to 1 hr of running for the day. I never would have done that if it weren't for this challenge.

    Chilly one in Ottawa today,

    It sure was.

  • Snowy here today, ended up with a snow day from work, but have been head and body achy, chilled, exhausted and blech since last night. Will wait and see how I feel later, would be nice to get the third run in today, but at this point the idea is gross to me.
