EN 1Km Swim "Bring the Pain" TT Challenge 2014

Swimming?..... In the Outseason?...... Isn't this EN?

Yes, you read it right folks. It`s time to find that swim suit, goggles and swim cap and get yourself to the pool.

This challenge takes place January 15th - January 30th - 15 days, and It`s simple.

Head over to this spreadsheet and input your BEST 1k TT ever and your current 1k TT time (if known).  Then hit the water and knock out the 1k and then post your numbers.  This is a great baseline as you start thinking about your 2014 season!

If you have any questions, here is a link to last year’s thread where you might be able to find the answers you are looking for.

Now get B U S Y!

  • Brenda,

Is it ok to do this before the 15th? I would like to participate but won't be able to swim for a few weeks starting on Jan 13th. Thanks!

  • You bet Laura. You have some special circumstances.
  • Santa got me a waterproof iPod. I'm going to swim like a fish this year!
  • If you can keep yourself awake after puppy duty (insert early potty break 4-6am) Kim
  • In.....Plan for Jan test is 1/10 ....
  •  Swimming is the worst of my 3 disciplines......always hard for me to put it out there........... I'm in.......no laughing!
  • I don't have a 1k time.  Can I still play?

  • Same boat - no 1K baseline. Still would like to get in.
  • Everyone can play. I do not have one either. I would say you could do one at the beginning and then try to best it at the end? Any other suggestions people?
  • That's what I thought I'd do. Already figured out how many laps = 1K.

  • Done.  I was supposed to test Monday, as I'm in wk1 of GF plan, but moved it to today. I probably won't test again b/w Jan 15 and Jan30, so went ahead and entered my numbers early.  Hope that's OK.

After 4 of 6 lessons with a professional coach, I've already become more efficient (fewer strokes/length and better swim golf scores) and a little faster.  I think by the time IMTX rolls around, I'll have become a little faster and for sure will be more efficient.

If you're a MOP/BOP swimmer, I highly recommend hiring a coach if you can....I was skeptical, but after seeing my underwater videos and making some (major) changes, it is paying off.

  • Currently looks like Tim K. and I are the collars.  Tim is the ceiling and I am the floor.  Your first goal should be to improve your time, second goal is to make sure you do not become the floor, bonus if you can beat Tim's time........... Have Fun!
  • I went to a New Years Day master swim class yesterday.  Thought it was supposed to be an EZ swim (you know...nothing hard the day after staying up late drinking).  Well the swim coach didn't get the memo.  After 600 meter WU, she says "okay we're going to start the year with getting a baseline.  We're doing a 30 minute time trial."  Yikes!!  I wasn't mentally ready for that. But off we went.

Started off slow, and then fell apart.  Mentally, I just wasn't ready to crush myself, so I didn't.  I worked but didn't kill myself.  My time for 1000 meters was 19:50.  Finished 1500 meters right at 30:30.  Oh well, its done. So that's my baseline and I'm counting it for my EN swim challange.

  • If Cronk is in, so am I!

Swam 70 x 100 yards yesterday for New Years Day.  So waiting 2 weeks to get this done works.  I should be able to raise my arms above my head by then.

  • If Starky, Cronkmaster,BT,Jeff,JC, and the rest of the gang are in "How am I not in". Time to deflate my water wings and learn to stay afloat !
  • I haven't swam since IMWI! This could be interesting!

  • Somebody needs to be at the back of the pack so clearly you need me in this endeavor.
Although it will hurt my pride to actually write down my 100 time, I'm in.
  • No worries Ralph I am the guy.
  • Can I sandbag it by using my Deep Water Running technique for the baseline 1k and then swim my Swim Like A Rock Technique for the final test?

Now that I think about it....the times may be closer than I'd like to imagine....
  • I'm in! Great benchmark to compare to the week #1 test when we crank-up the swimming again!

Sounds like a plan, but no laughing at my times

  • I'm debating. I am such a horrible, horrible swimmer. I would be the botttom collar for sure.
  • In accordance with my resolutions for 2014, I am in. To be honest, i am much more excited about the sleep challenge.....
  • After not having swam 1k since Kona in 2010 I will gladly take my 1k time of 18:54 today. I had some shoulder pain but tried it ignore it. Trying to complete the catch on my right shoulder is TOUGH.

Never take for granted what you have because you might not always have it. I HATED swimming before my wreck, now I cant wait to try and get in the pool with no pain.  For four years now I have tried to swim again after my collision with a motorcycle course marshal just outside Hawi. I am hoping 2014 is the year!!!!!!

  • @JC, I believe the keeper of the challenges are making this friendly for the metric peeps and those still on British measurements. For us up in Canada we have pools in both measurements ?!
  • I am in. This is gonna hurt after months out of the pool!
  • John, you may not want to know this, but meters is about 10% farther than yards.  If you go 1,100 yards, that's about 1,000 meters. Bob
