Well I dragged my ass to the pool today with fellow EN'er Trevor MacLean for a reality check. It was no a pretty site but we needed to get a baseline to work with for January TT. As Rob say's meter 100m + 9.3% ='s 100 yds. Ugg in all but the positives hopefully we will improve but overall this get's me back in the pool. So today here were the numbers in both formats. 2:17/100 meters or 2:05/yds ='s 22:50 min for 1000 m's again ugg! There is work to be done !
Today's swim - I'm following an EN OS swim hack Rich put out a couple of years ago - asked for the 1000 yd/m time trial, so off I went. 700 yds warm-up, followed by 16:36 for 1000 yds, or 1:39.6 for my T pace.
In May, 2010, I could do 15:29 for my fastest one I have recorded. A year later, after a bike accident messed up my swimming on a somewhat permanent basis, I was in the 18:52 range, dropping to 16:53 within six months; 2 years ago, it was 16:46. Last year was 16:39. So at least I'm not losing any more speed, yet.
Ok, I am going to do a 1500 meter master swim competition at the Olympic Club in San Francisco the end of this month. Totally stocked to do this. Will use the first 1000 yards of that swim as my TT time.
Racing against others for 1500 will either kill me or help me kick ass. We shall see.
OK, this is driving me bananas! Are we doing this in meters or yards? It makes a big difference.
Or, can we have columns for meters and columns for yards?
Or, have I missed something?...I see some people posting their times with "xx:xx/1000m" or "xx:xx/1100yds" or "xx:xx/1000yds", instead of just the time. I think that's cuz nobody knows what is the "standard" we are going to use.
I don't care which one we use, just should be same for all, right?
January swim test done..... Best ever 14:59 , December test 15:32 , Today's test on 1/10 15:11 or 1:31 per 100yd...... File shows a 990yd interval for the test... The pool is measured @ 101' or 33.66yds so I have the garmin 910xt custom set at 33yds.... The distance actually swam was 1010yds.... If you factor in that extra 10 yds I get to deduct another 9 seconds bringing my time down to 15:02 which is 3 seconds off my best time ever... I'll take that on 5000-8000yds per week the past month!

My advice: do yards or meters depending on the pool you swim in. When it comes time for the "real" swim time trials in the race prep phase, there is no requirement that it be yds or meters, just "1000" of either. Makes the math and swimming much easier.
I don't think we all need to be the same, as we are comparing ourselves to our selves, not to each other, right?

True.....it's just not hard to all use the same units! If your pool is 25 yds, then do an extra 100. No biggie. I'm just type AAA!
I am the keeper of the challenge and I second what Al says above. If your pool is in yds, measure in yds and vice versa. Its all about getting an improvement from the time you started to the time you end. The winner of the challenge will be the person with the most improvement on their own time. Does that help?
I will never be in the upper tier of this challenge for sure but "I do like a challenge". But for me it is just to get in the pool and move forward. Looking to all my teammate's to get me through this one. @JC, C'mon man the run challenge was fun ! Badger boy is paying for this at the Dopey run, and yes it was in miles even though I am Canadian ! ! I am doing pre swims to get my stroke back. Let's see what the 2 weeks bring !

Sure Brenda....side with Al! OK. Maybe next year it could be 1000m or 1100yds? The problem for some of us (like me), is that we swim in two different pools, one 25m and one 25yds. No big deal. I'll stand down!
Columns C and D say, "Current/recent 100 yd 1k TT PR" and "January TT 1,000 Yard Time." I assume that translates to "January 15 1,000 yd TT" and "Jaunary 31 1,000 yd TT"? If correct, I'll play (although I jumped the Jan 15 date and tested yesterday). If I'm too dumb to play, I'll quietly slink away.
Hi Brenda - I'm going to have to bow out of this one. Took a look at what Coach R and P have scheduled for me, and I'd rather not overdo it right now. Next time for sure!
Did my 1k swim today, I didn't execute very well, and was disappointed in my time-20:50. I haven't swam since before Nov OS. I guess the good thing is I haven't been swimming, didn't execute very well, and my time was only 2-2:30 off !
@Jeff L.... Did you see my note? I'm swimming in a 101' pool.... thats 33.66 yds or 30.78 meters...
My Masters program has 50 meter lanes setup through the end of January. I LOVE IT! Having to do fewer flip turns means I can really get into a "zone" and also focus much more heavily on my strokes (catching, etc.). Personally gonna hate going back to 25 yards in February.

BOOM! Gotta start someplace. Only way to go is up, brotha! Way to get it done.

I'm in-my first challenge. I'm actually excited???
OK planned on doing it on Monday the 13th, but we got slammed with the flu at home-4th day down and hoping to feel semi normal by the weekend??? I'm still in, but will be taking it easy for my baseline.

@JC Ihope you don't lose count on those extra 4. I could do yds as well hmm 2:05 sounds better than 2:17 !
Thanks, Al! I appreciate it!

Look for my numbers then.
