The Island of Misfit Triathletes is HERE

This is for anyone not in a racing group. My tri season is pretty much done and I have a half Mary, a sprint tri relay then a bike race coming up so I just don't fit in to any of the race forums. So in case anyone else is feeling left out, just "having fun with fitness", doing local races, etc, this is your place to post WKOs or whatever!

After 3 days of complete rest, I did a random "whatever I felt like" ride. I actually felt really good. Did a couple z4 efforts. 6:45 and 10' with about 30' @ .85IF which felt more like Z3. Total about 20 miles in 1:10.

OK fellow "misfits", what are you up to? <img src='http://members.endurancenation.ushttp://members.endurancenation.us/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif' align="absmiddle" border="0" class="afEmoticon" />

  • Hey Kim - I'm with you - done with IMMT - doing a sprint this weekend, then working/supporting the team at IMWI, gearing up for a 50k trail run (hopefully Dean Karnazes will be there again), marathon in October as a training run, and another try at a 50 mile run - looking for a PR to beat my last time of 10:35.  Not sure when I'll get on the bike or in the pool in the next few months but do worry about losing the fitness I have right now!
  • Sounds like a plan. Enjoy this unstructured time, even though it doesn't seem all that unstructured from what you wrote. Good to keep in the game.

Me, I'm on a couch to OK program for the foreseeable future.

  • You two are much busier than me! I've got a local sprint tri on the books at the end of September. I'm going to keep my focus on body comp and consistency in schedule in prep for some good OS gains. An hour on the bike and an hour doing yard work today lol.

Its also transition time from being a lurker and knowledge sponge to really participating in the team aspect. I first joined when prepping for a 3rd ironman figuring I would join the EN kit cult that consistently hunted me down on the previous 2. Ended up with bad migraines and a non-start because of one at Florida that year. Just got them back under control a few months ago and started to train in earnest again. It feels really weird to be on right now with all the big events hitting each week so I'm glad to see I'm not the only misfit on the island right now.
  • @Mike - welcome to the island. Like you, I'm not much of a participant but do lurk - still building my knowledge - even after a few years! And, after my A race, always looking to do fun fitness things. Sue
  • Hello again fellow "misfits"! So I began my random simultaneous half marathon and bike race training. Did a group ride today and tried to push myself. Here's what I did:

    41' @ .97IF
    48' @ .91IF
    16' @ .84IF

Total 29.5 mi in 1:35 @ .92IF. Not bad. I was really just riding however I felt like, trying to stay with the group. Feeling good about the effort, but quite scared about doing a 38mi race in less than 2 months!

Wife has a 5k tomorrow so I'm playing spectator. I may do a run later for kicks, but I'm being "breezy" about it. Technically, this is a "whatever I want to do post Timberman week" but I can't help but feel I SHOULD run since my half mary is in 3 weeks.....

How has everyone else's weekend been so far?
  • Kim, I dub thee Hermey, Leader of the Island of Misfit Toys

  • This weekend I'm redoing my guest room ... Just one week post IMMT. Thought about a run but went to the farmers market instead. Maybe a swim tomorrow then I 've got to get back to running!

@kim - the race sounds like fun!
  • Lol@rich. Yup that's me

Sue- aren't u allowed some running downtime post IM? Maybe not though w all the running races u have planned.

Even though this is my off week, I really felt like a should run w a 1/2 in 3 weeks so I did the 8 miles EZ in the plan. Didn't feel too bad!
  • Been living the misfit life this past year. Been a pretty nice reboot for the body and mind.

Just accept the fact that you are a misfit and be ok with that. Since January been doing 2 bikes, 3 runs, 2 weight sessions a week. with no real goals other than gaining back some muscle and getting ready for 2015.

as I type, I have my 2015 season plan excel sheet up and am in desperate need of a June Half Ironman on the road to IM Maryland 2015.
  • @Nate - yup - going to be liking the misfit life for a few months. Raleigh, Eagleman, Syracuse??

Couldn't get enough racing so signed up for a sprint this weekend - that'll be interesting as I haven't done one for over a year. Did an easy 4 mile run this morning and the legs feel good. Suppose I should get on the bike this week too!
  • Decent run tonight despite some heat and humidity. 2 x 1 mile @ Z4 (well, fell 7 secs short on the 2nd one) then a couple more miles around Z1.5/Z2. Rough start though, even with my new Adidas Boost. They weren't feeling nearly "boosty" enough for me. Hammies are pretty tight. Massage time soon!
  • New shoes are always hit and miss with me on the first trip out. If I waited too long before switching, my form seems to suffer a touch and that rears its ugly head when I put a solid platform back under them.  I love the smell though - it's the smell of unlimited potential. And probably some toxins. But mostly unlimited potential.  Hope they 'boost' you up next time out.

I got some time in on the trainer tonight, the good ole 8x1' @ 120% w/ 1' recoveries. Daylight was fading too fast to get out on the road safely.

Oh and @Kim, please send the heat and humidity back to its rightful home here in Atlanta! It's in the low 80's and very low humidity here. If it weren't for the horrible traffic, I'd believe I was in a different city!

  • Sounds like you guys are having fun! I'm feeling a bit misfitish. Haven't found a home this summer. Too new at tri to be doing the long stuff yet. Someday.

Now that my back is feeling better. I have a 5k run this Saturday with a couple friends here in town. Thought that might be fun. Then next Saturday it's go time for the NW Championships.

I'm getting in the mood for loose training. a little more want to do instead of have to do because of A,B or C.

  • Have a HIM this weekend then 6 weeks of concentrated efforts toward the Chicago marathon and then a Half Mary in November. Have a job interview today. If I get it, it is job #4 that I have to work into my schedule, so I am eager to see how things go. I will keep you all posted.
  • Saw a couple people talking about fall body comp. Thought "What the hell I haven't measured since the end of the body comp. challenge".

Well, not to bad for not trying. Just eating well rounded, fresh food. Wt 175  lost 1/2 inch in my hips and a full inch in my waist since May. Now the challenge is going to be keeping it off during the fall taper into the NOS.

  • Mike- I love the short 120% stuff!

Jacklyn- Good luck @ the 5k and the body comp. I don't want to talk about mine... Up about 9 lbs from last year. And I'm pretty sure its not all muscle....

BR- How did the interview go? You're raacking up jobs like an Ironman in training racks up miles!

Did a nice "misfit" workout tonight. Just got on the canal line trail (paved) and rode as hard as I could while dodging people and stopping for stop signs. Ended up with .935IF for just under an hour.
  • My misfit workout for the day was stacking firewood. Got the last of 3.5 cords stacked in the garage and ready for Ole Man Winter!

Tomorrow we head north to an Inn for the night then off to Chesuncook Lake for a few days of paddling and camping.

See you on the other side....
  • @Kim, Think I'll be joining you here in misfit land. image I was planning an Oct. marathon but I think that's off the table due to scheduling conflicts. I have an Oly on the 6th, a couple of 10ks & hopefully a HM or two this fall. Did Sufferfest Downward Spiral last night & will be heading out for a swim and run after work today.
  • My misfit work out today was NOTHING! And I had a brownie sundae too. Spent the day getting ready for school and grocery shopping. I haven't been grocery shopping for 2 weeks. It took me 2 1/2 hours. My garden is producing a lot of our fresh stuff.

  • Jacklyn- same here except I had ice cream cake for my wife's birthday not a brownie sundae. Long run tomorrow so I guess I'll consider it carb loading!
  • @ Kim- Happy Birthday. Did you you see that EN has 2 new beautiful members? David is a lucky man.

I'm kind off in a free fall this week. I'm trying to enjoy the peace and harmony before school starts. Then it's all about Sally did this and Kevin did that....

But it means no more juggling of training time. I have 6 hours all to myself to run/bike all I want. I can't wait to go for a long slow solo ride.

  • Jacklyn- Sometimes the juggling is harder than the WKO itself so you're lucky to not have that anymore!

I worked from home today and did my run around1:00. The forecast said about 78 so that didn't seem too bad, esp on a shady trail. But it was a crappy run, literally and figuratively. (Yup, the dreaded need for a "porta-tree" mid-run) I started out a little slower than Z1 and planned to go from there but it didn't get much faster than that. Everything felt tight. Glutes, hammies, muscles I dont know the names of. I usually feel better around mile 2-3, but I said if I wasn't able to pick it up by the 3 mile mark, I'd turn around. (It was supposed to be 8 miles today) I did 6 at snail speed, which is slow even for me. I'll try the "real" 8 mile run again on Sun. 2 weeks to half mary so I don't think there are any major improvements to be had before then. It is what it is.....

Have a great holiday weekend ENM. (EN Misfits) image
  • @ Kim- Oh it's not that easy. I volunteer for 2+ days a week at my daughters school. I try and get ALL my house/mom stuff done while she's in school so i'm free and clear for her when she walks thru the door. Hence the " Super Tri Mom" title. It just sounds great on paper.

  • My Sat. morning group was on fire today and I couldn't keep up. .95IF for 33' then the balance of a little over an hour at .85IF. (I gave up on trying to keep up)

Def. due for a massage to loosen things up!
  • @Kim - looks like you're killing it on the bike - great job! I thinking about doing indoor group rides this winter to build more speed. Ready to step out to do a 14 mile run and it's raining. This misfit is waiting for the rain to leave! image
  • Well, ran my 5k this morning. What a BLAST! My friend and I started slow because we were back with the walkers due to her jogger. Had to weave our way up. Passed a lot of people and we were just cruising with a goal pace of 10:00 per mile. We talked the whole time. She ended up getting 2nd in her AG and I took 4th in mine. We negative split each mile. Ending on a 9:13 mile pace. We were the fastest jogger. Her two year old daughter kept saying "faster, faster". Talk about a tough boss! I took 12/100 women. Not bad for a big girl play date.

  • @Jacklyn - congrats - way to go for a 1st 5K!
  • @ Sue- Thank you. I ran the 5k to test out what 9-9:30 mile felt like in a race. I think i'm locked and loaded for my sprint next Saturday.

  • Sue- Did you get your run in?

    Jacklyn- Nice jobon that 5k!!

Since my Fri. run and Sat. bike were so-so, I skipped the run today and will try it tomorrow. Went to a party last night and got crap sleep and it was super humid today so I didn't think it would be a great run so felt like postponing was the best option. I'm off all week so my training schedule can be super flexible. Test rode a Giant Brava SLR 2 cross bike today. Ready to buy as soon as they get it in stock!! Fun!!
  • @Kim - no ... as she hangs her head - I didn't get my run in - waiting for the rain to end would have meant finishing after 2 in the afternoon and this misfit had to go to Taste of Madison and eat, drink, and listen to bands on the capital square.  Opted for a whopping 15 minutes on the trainer to remind the legs that they had a sprint to do the next day and a 30 minute run with some uphill strides. Feeling guilty about the non-run but will take 1st of 12 for Age Group win in F50-54 and 19/135 females in the local sprint today.  Must get back on it tomorrow.
