It's a lovely fall day here in Oregon. What a shame I feel so yucky. No energy. No motivation. NO nothing! I took off last week because I've started collecting nagging aches and pains and thought a little off time was called for. I even went so far afield as to have a piece of cheese cake. Now I don't want to move. I just woke up from an hour nap and I don't feel any better. Glad NOS is several weeks away. I'm going to have a cup of tea and watch the leaves. *SIGH*. "Calling DR MOJO! Your needed stat!"
I think this is the time of year where it's okay to leave the motivation aside for a little while and simply refresh ... without guilt! Naps are good. Cheesecake is just as good!
I'm trying to keep my motivation high for the last month of training to the big "50" day. The last two weeks (after the long trail run) have felt like I'm moving through concrete every time I go for a run. More run/walking than is good. Went for a 16 mile run on Saturday - made it to 5 miles, which was a park overlooking the lake and just sat under a tree looking at the water for 15 minutes. Then turned around and ran (mostly) home. Took Sunday and Monday off. We'll see how this afternoon goes.
Thanks Sue. I'm not being given much choice in the matter. I don't think I can muster enough get up and go to even go swimming. I'd probably just bob like a cork. I suppose i could be used as a lane marker.
Sounds like you might be ready for cheese cake too. I was thinking about all the late year IM people. How do they keep up the energy this late in the year? It really is amazing watching them continue. I wish I was able to watch kona but i have to work.
Jacklyn- Agreed that our friends "Mo" and "Jo" can sometimes take an extended vacation at the end of the season. Try to do what you enjoy and don't force it. NOS will be here soon enough.
I have lots of bike mojo but zero for running. The more I bike, the more I like it. Forced myself to run tonight. Ran low on daylight and I refuse to hit the 'mill just yet so got in 1 whopping mile. But I went pretty hard (Z4) and it was hilly. Legs were sore and concrete like (sound familiar Sue?) but I figured I can suck it up for 1 little mile. Tomorrow may be another day off due to rain and the tri bike isn't set up on the trainer yet. Phooey.
@ Kim- Biking is my favorite. You see so much. It's even better when the power meter goes out and you just gotta ride by love.
My new bike just arrived! Can't wait to get her put together. I finally have a touring bike that I can ride with my father in law and be comfortable. My TT is way to expensive to ride around him and his buddies who don't ride in a straight line. No clips on this bike. There's one lady who has wash clothes rubber banded on her handle bars for grips. She almost crashed me twice this summer because her wash clothes slipped off. My new bike is nothing fancy she's just a work horse. But I like her.
DR MOJO finally came and made a house call. Went for an hour long ride by myself. Sadly, I had to wear leg warmers. The best part was the moving target practice. I made a loop around a hazel nut orchard and the squirrels were going nuts. Literally! I had to dodge them like crazy. I had one run under my chain rings. I hit it with my pedal. Boy did I get chewed out! What a shame I don't speak squirrel.
Starting to feel better mood wise. My achilles are still bothering me but I got some advice from the WSM P.T we have in house and it's starting to feel a little better.
@ Kim- Nice work. Thanks for all your encouragement. I really appreciate it.
Ran a bit over 6miles this morning. Legs were feeling like cement but no shin pain, so that was good. I really need to work on getting more sleep. Just because I can function on 6 hrs of sleep doesn't mean that I should... And on that note- goodnight!
@Rachel - legs always feel like concrete after time off - it will come back fast - you're a great runner!
As for me, taking a few days off at the end of last week/beginning of this week has really helped. I had a few good runs this week - 6 miles and 10 miles. Doing 8 on Saturday and then a "catered training run" - the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. "Snow" may be in the forecast but I think it will be warmer along the lakefront - just hope the 30 mph winds die down by then. Just a few more training weeks left.
Sue- Snow? Noooooooo! LOL Glad a little more rest helped! Enjoy the "catered training run".
I had a pretty good run this morning. I've only run like 4 miles since my Half Mary 9/14. (COach said take 2 weeks off running, which I was MORE than happy to comply!) Plus I felt like I hadn't run fast (ie Z4) in forever so I didn't have high hopes for today. AND I biked Thurs & Fri w/ hard (1.15IF) intervals. I have honestly been afraid to run for fear of the reality of how slow I've gotten. Well, my legs surprised me! Target pace of 9:20.
1 mi- 9:16 .5mi- 9:09 .5mi- 9:13 1 mi- 9:12
VERY happy about that. And I did it in the rain. Go me!
Beautiful day here today but a little chilly in the am so broke out the EN jacket. Group ride today with a new group. Much hillier than I usually ride but I guess that's good. 20 miles, 1,265 ft gain, 1:20, .94IF. It was an easy ride for the guys I was riding with but not so easy for me because of the hills. Then spent some time getting DAUs (Dog approval units) at the dog park. Tuckered pups are a good thing!
Last Friday, I decided to take my early morning training ride off of the trainer and commute to work. 25 miles each way, with 400 ft of ascent and 1200 feet of decent going out. Reverse those numbers for the afternoon commute back home. Two very successful commute/training rides times of 1:30 in the morning and 1:40 coming home.
I decided that it went so well, and that I had to make up for my laziness over the weekend, that I would give it another go this morning. All went incredibly well, oh there was that flat 5 miles in, but a little practice changing tubes in the dark never hurt anyone. It was at mile 24.4, one block from work, that things went south. I was paying more attention to the two semi trucks coming at me, that I missed the 2" wide "crack" in the roadway. End over the aerobars I went, landing head first. OUCH!
Aside from a sever neck sprain, the only other injuries are a 1/2" scrape on a finger and slightly bruised elbow. No torn or scratched clothing. The Cervelo is in fine working & cosmetic order. I got checked out by my Doc and all is well. Not sure how I made it out as well as I did.
Now I'm just pissed at how this is going to set back my training this week. I almost went out for a lunchtime run, but thought better of it in the end. I'll rest up for tomorrow's 60 min MS: 3 x 1 Z4 run
Phil- ouch! And one of those things that make you so thankful that it didn't go worse... When I crashed this summer Coach P told me to stand down for several days to really allow my body the rest it needs to heal. You might be a lot more sore tomorrow. Glad you are ok!
I was planning a trainer ride tonight but I had major insomnia last night and clocked in about 2 hrs sleep. Been feeling like crap all day so planning to go to bed very soon to get back at it tomorrow.
Ok. I'm letting my lack of techines show. How the hell do you hash tag and twitter??? My hubs is laughing right now. He says the only way I learned to email is so I could join EN!
No training for me. Been working for the last 2 days and it has NOT been a fun ride. Full moon and all.
Man I hope you heal up quickly. I've done plenty of endo's on my mtb bike. Pay close attention to your shoulders. Especially the side that got scraped up. Your shoulders took a lot of force. When your no longer mad, then take stock of your booboo's.
Thanks Rachel & Jacklyn. I'll be taking it easy for a couple of days, because I will be too sore to do much of anything. Neck and back are tightening up already. I'm sure more will show itself tomorrow.
As for me, got some good shout outs from you all - marathon on Sunday - smashed my PR from 4:56 to 4:22 - like it that it's closer to 4 hours than 5!! Took a few days off (and not too sore) and will trying a short run tomorrow. Last long run on Sunday (20 miles) then the taper starts!
Easy 5 mile run this morning. My easy pace clocked in at 8:40. I am just loving the stars aligning feeling! I am finding myself not doing the swim and bike workouts I was planning on, but I am focused on a HM at the moment so trying to not feel too guilty. My new mindset is to focus on quality runs and if a bike/swim happens, it's bonus. OS will be here soon enough to whip the bike into shape!
Sue- you are such a rockstar. I can't imagine doing a marathon as just a training run. And getting a huge PR while doing so!
Rachel- Yes, guilt is a killer! Cut yourself some slack this time of year!
I had a great bike WKO on Tues. 4 x 3' @ 1.15IF, then I did 20' @ 1.06IF "for fun".
Unfortunately, I can't do the bike race I've been training for on Monday. I now have a business trip so I can't do the race. I'm bummed but I'm going out to LA to a taping of "Ellen" since my brand, Litter Genie, is the sponsor of Cat Week.
Luckily, I was able to move my hotel reservation. I booked it through Hotwire and got a great deal but no cancellations/changes are usually allowed.
On another positive note, my bike fitness is probably the best it has ever been from all the bike training so I'm actually looking forward to doing an FTP test as soon as I can and will try like heck to keep as many of those hard-earned watts til Jan OS!
Kim- bummer about the race but sounds like a good trip. And who can complain about more bike fitness?
I did the run home from work thing last night for a nice easy 7 mile run. It was such a gorgeous night to be running along the lakefront with the full moon. And I ran into ENer David Salzman. This is the biggest mileage week I've done in a long time for running, and my legs seem to be tolerating it well. I've cut down a bit on intensity this week to do a volume push. Plan is another 5-6 miles today, swim only tomorrow, and 14 on Sunday. I'm excited to be heading into the OS with a good run base and no pain! Man, after so long of running in pain it is just glorious to love running again!
As for me, ran a slow 1.3 miles to the YMCA to swim last night. Achilles were not happy. I've taken 2 weeks off of running and have been riding and swimming. Reached out to the haus. Have several exercises i'm doing for my achilles. This sucks. We're almost into the OS!
I want do start the OS this time. Missed it last year due to my back. But going on a solo hammer fest this morning on my bike. I've got 2 1/2 hours. Lets see how far I can go.
Solo hammer fest didn't happen. Thank GOD! I was sitting at school with my daughter and visiting with her friends. Noticed a rash under her arms. Thought, " OH SHIT! HIVES", my daughters not allergic to anything. Picked up her stuff walker her up to the front and called my husband. I have no way to get her to the clinic. I rode my bike. SHe's breathing and talking fine but the hives are quickly getting worse. As we're waiting for a ride, her hands are getting dusky and she's starting to fidgit. Hubs gets there and roars her to the clinic. I think I set a land speed record riding home. She's doing fine. Still has hives but better. I'm absolutely exhausted. You'd think I actually rode 50 miles with the way I feel. That was scary stuff. I think it was claritan. Which is odd. Seeing as how it's along acting antihistimine and used to treat allergies.
So trainer ride this afternoon after a snuggle and a nap.
Kin - Sore as Hell. Took Tuesday off and slept until 2:00 PM, and felt better, but still pretty bad. Went to the gym and ran 1.5 miles before my back started pushing back at me. I was able to maintain a Z3-Z2 pace, not bad considering I can only breath at about 3/4 capacity. Spent the rest of my time in the jacuzzi. More jacuzzi time and a visit to the chiropractor scheduled for this evening. I'm still amazed at how well I walked away from this. Looking at the positives: I'll be well rested for starting the Nov OS & I'll be getting a new helmet. Thinking of the Giro Air Attack Shield.
Jacklyn- Yes, very ironic that Claritin would cause allergice reaction! Hope she's better now!
Phil- Keep takin' it easy!
Did an FTP test today for "fun" since my last ride went so well. 8watt VO2 bump and 3 watt FTP bump. (Last test was May!) I probably could have eeked out a few more watts without the stops on the trail I was riding on but still not bad, especially for this time of year! Now I need to hold on to as many of those watts til JOS starts!
I still have a 70.3 race ahead of me, but there is no forum for this one. Will be racing in Taiwan on Nov 2nd.
Anyway just following my training plan is one thing, talking to fellow racer another one. If you guys don't mind, I will post here from time to time regarding my training progress (if any...).
Welcome Sandro! Anyone feeling like a misfit is welcome here!
Last night I planned on a group trail ride but no one showed up so I did an easy 7 miles and packed it in before dark. I don't mind riding through the woods in the dark (with bike lights) with others but not solo!
Ran with the wife today. She is faster than me now but I kept up. Mostly due to the fact I forgot my garmin so I was just trying to keep up. Worked out well cuz I def ran faster than I would have on my own, or if I had seen my pace, esp with hills. I often suspect my speed (or lack of ) is more mental than physical.
Off to Cali for work tomorrow. I'll try to get a run in on tues...
As for me, it's taper time - last run in the books today - 20 slow miles - very different than the marathon last week. Longest run for the next two weeks will be 10 miles - ahhhh. My feet are going to be thanking me. I'm going to keep working on body comp - every lb counts - and making my to-do list for all of those outside projects that have to get done before the snow flies.
Just working on planning next year's calendar - no IM, but get faster and a few 70.3s. Definitely doing the Tour of Sufferlandria (end of January - will be hard), Ragnar Key West, and trying to figure out the others (Door County half, maybe Boulder 70.3, Rev3 Quassy) - so many possibilities!
Sue, I can't imagine doing a 20 miler a week after a marathon, especially since you crushed that race. But then again, I can't imagine doing an ultra...
My weekend was a training waste. Went out for a run yesterday and legs were like "nope, we need rest" so I listened and turned around. Then I was foolish and thought I'd be able to go for a long run after volunteering at the marathon today from 6am til 3pm. That nap sure felt good instead! The plan is to go to bed now and try to knock out a 10 miler before work in the morning.

Good short ride tonight. 9 x 2' @ 1.15IF then about 12' @ .98IF. Total about 16mi, 1hr, .95IF.
More biking tomorrow. I'm behind this week cuz we had 2 days of rain. Its all good.
Well Misfits,
