Yes I'm week 3 of HIM beginner ending the day before my HIM. I see no swimming. Am I missing something? Yes I have a hamstring issue that I aggravated yesterday at a half marathon. So when I look at a week of all running I kind of panic.

I just checked your account and you have the Beginner Half Marathon plan loaded up. You need to load up the Beginner EN*Half training plan, setting it to end on 5/24.
I'm going to join a masters program either tomorrow or thursday, but I'll keep my other swimming in the 75 meter pool. SO the volume will probably look the same but the individual workouts will be tough to convert. I will probably just deal with it and not get consumed by those details.
So it hurts to sit on the saddle now that I'm doing physical therapy for this hamstring tear. Is there a 3 week super duper swim program you could put me on? with some ab work worked in?
Otherwise I'm just going to sit around and drink beer and be angry. We don't want that.

Sorry to hear about your hamstring troubles. Your best option is to remain in the HIM plan that you're in, and then repeat a couple of the swims per week, so that you're swimming 5x/wk instead of 3x. Let me know if this doesn't make sense.
Ok, torn hamstring level 2. I can do all my workouts "to tolerance" except no sprinting on the bike or run (light jogging) and as much swimming as I can "tolerate". I have 6 weeks of PT and then we regroup. 6 weeks gets me to May 20th, my half iron is 4 days after that. If I can't do it, I'll ratchet down to the international distance and maybe do 70.3 Steelhead instead.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch...as long as I can't go hard, should I work on going longer? The PT is going to be "intense" so I'll be sore. It will be glute and ab work. What do you think?

Notes:
Sounds to me like the HIM is off the table. I recommend you take it off the table so that it doesn't create an unrealistic timetable for you that potentially encourages you to rush your recovery.
Re longer vs harder: I recommend you follow that "to tolerance" guidance and let your body dictate the right course of action, adjusting things in real time.
Just had a little jog. It's tight but not impossible. Now I'm off to Paris to help my husband enjoy his Paris Marathon. I guess I'll download another plan when the time is right.
**update, downloaded beginner HIM to end 8/9 at 70.3 Steelhead. I'll see how things go. Paris was great. I walked many miles.
So I ran/walked 4.5 miles on Sunday. I'm going to keep at that and likely skip the race...I could ratchet it down to the International distance and if I can run/walk 6.6 (the distance) by next week, I may do it...it's not for 19 days!!! (I read what I'm writing and I think, 'you are a dope hartmann). ::sigh::

Hope you are enjoying the cycling out there!
I recommend you drop down the Oly. No need to artificially accelerate your recovery by placing that constraint on you. Good luck!
Deferred it to next year. Going to visit a friend in Chicago/Michigan this weekend. Run in the sand. Check out the 70.3 Steelhead course and see if maybe I do that instead. I can just SEE me hurting myself.
Still have 5+ months to go but I'm still doing all my cycling on the trainer. When do I need to get outdoors? or is my Oly in a couple weeks enough "outdoor" time for a while? I know I'll need to practice with the clip on aero bars OR get a new bike (cross fingers on the condo sale) but right now I'm on the trainer. I put it in the garage so it's hot and humid as hell out there, but WAY less traffic.

If you're going to be stuck indoors on a trainer then I'd like you to ride in the aerobars as much as possible. And hot and humid is not good, especially if can be avoided. Can you move trainer indoors in the AC? And use a fan(s). Lots and lots of fans, if possible.
OK, I assumed that being out there would be good for me. Happy to ride indoors.
Well, I assumed you had a good reason to be indoors vs outdoors. If you have a choice, outdoors in the aerobars is better. Indoors works too, though not as well, but if you are riding indoors you should be in the aerobars.
Think "race specificity:" the closer you get to your race the more race specific -- outdoors, in the bike you'll be racing on, in the position you'll be riding in during the race, etc -- your training needs to be.
Miami is a very dangerous place to cycle. I ride the trainer because it's safer. It's also a better workout. I don't have aero bars so I usually ride in the drops outdoors and a combo of hood and drops on the trainer. So it's indoors vs garage vs roads. I did get out on the roads Saturday and all the trainer riding has been good for me. We'll see what Sunday brings at my Oly. Cheers!

So I did my first Oly with a real swim .93 as opposed to the Internationals around here which are usually ,5 or .6. I had my self completely freaked out over it... and it was fine. I mean, it took me a few hundred to warm up and then... it was almost enjoyable. HOW ODD!? Anyway, glad I did it. Now I'm confident I can handle a HIM swim with a few weeks of work. SO I'm thinking of 70.0 SteelHead August 9th. My plan is set up for that one and I'm 20 weeks from IMFL. What should I be training for, the HIM on 8/9 or the Full on 11/7? In other words, will my half plan have me in a good place or should I not sign up for it and up my volume for IMFL?
Anyway, the swim was fine, I could have gone harder, the bike was fine, I could have gone harder, and the run was tough.. foot pain, that went away, hip pain, that went away, and the hamstring pain didn't come on until mile 4 so I was good to hobble and walk 14-15mm. Finished in 3:57. swim 38, bike 1:30, run 1:36 14 mins over my PR. I walked a lot.

Congrats on the race!
Steelhead works with IMFL. If you decide to do it, submit this change to me via the Triathlon Season RoadMap tool under the Training tab above and I'll rework this for you.
I'll do the last .3 also. Might as well cross the finish line.
Update: I think you already did the plan update for me. I just did it anyway. After I hurt myself I deferred my May HIM to next year and told you I thought about Steelhead. I have HIM beginner ending 8/9. I officially signed up for it last night. I looked at the program a moment ago and I must say all the red exclamation points are an eye-opener. I have a RR swim and a RR bike, which is perfect as I have a long bike planned for this weekend. Cheers!
Thanks, just finally watched the screen cast, yeah, the OWS in the critical week is ONLY OK because it's in Clermont, which is Tri-Mecca here. I've never been. So I've been assured that ANY training I want to do up there will be easier than in Miami. So I will tee up appropriate training up there, no excuses. If it looks like it will simply be too disruptive, I'll skip it. Your assistant coach dog is hilarious BTW. Sounds like a busy guy. I have two cats. One lovely quiet guy and one 1000% food motivated, toy fetching, knocking sht over bruiser who thinks he's a dog.
Yesterday's bike went well, the run after was modified as there was a monsoon coming across the water. My friend picked me up in my car short of my 56 (51) then we drove the half hour home, and I ran 39 rather than 60 minutes. All the local golf course and swimming pool lightening sirens were going off. I could hear thunder and see the clouds coming so I got in what I could and then headed back home.
I do worry about getting enough done, so I am doing a staycation MTW of July (20,21,22) so I hope to get some quality workouts in over that Sat to Weds period, with extra napping added in. To make the most of 5 days, maybe adding a workout or making a workout longer...how would one do that best? On either end? two days in a row? I probably have less of a base built than anyone, so fitness is still an issue for me. I'd like to know if adding some bike and or run intervals at the beginning or end of some of my workouts might help... or if I should just do some extra long slow hours on the trainer. Or both. Thanks for your thoughts.
My husband managed to get the time as well and he's training for the Berlin Marathon so he's supportive.

Hi Stephanie,
Please just do the swims indicated in your training plan(s) and you'll be fine. Good luck!
My plan calls for NO swimming for a while. Just running.
Yes I'm week 3 of HIM beginner ending the day before my HIM. I see no swimming. Am I missing something? Yes I have a hamstring issue that I aggravated yesterday at a half marathon. So when I look at a week of all running I kind of panic.

AHA! feeling a little dopey here...
Thanks!
I have not been doing anything like this. I may be totally unprepared for this half ironman. Expletives!!

No running for at least 3 weeks. Then I can get on the alterG. I can swim and bike, but NO standing on the pedals.

Not much happening here. Have an appointment to see a sports medicine Ortho Doc. It's only been 2 weeks but it feels like months.
