I have my first race in about a year and a half scheduled for a week from Sunday.  I'm doing Rivercities sprint on Aug 2.

Just picked up a set of the Evo Open Corsa CX tires and latex tubes for the race.  Should I put those on this week and do a couple rides on them or just wait until race weekend?

Also, for riders > 180 lbs, the recommendation is to inflate to maximum.  So, you want me to inflate these tires to 145 psi?  Can't say I've ever done that.  But if that's the recommendation, cool.  I've never inflated to 120 for any particular reason so if 145 at least has some rationale behind it, I'm in.

I like to get at least one short ride to make sure I didn't pinch the tube or something.  Unless the road surface is absolutely pristine freshly paved I wouldn't go above 115-120psi.  What width are the tires and what wheels are they going on?  For a 23 or 25 tire on a wide rim like a Firecrest I'd suggest 110psi up front and 115-120 in the back for someone ~180lbs
  • Take your time installing them and use baby powder on the tube to reduce friction during install. May also want to leave the tire in the sun for a while, or toss it in the dryer, to heat it up before installing. IOW, take your time and do things right (baby powder + warm tire) so you don't needlessly pinch a $15 tube during instal.

Take it for a spin if that makes you feel better.

I think we have advice in this thread about recommended PSI. 145psi is crazy, crazy high. I've never heard of anyone running higher than ~120psi. I think I raced IMSG at ~105-110psi. I've had these tires and tubes on since then, for training, and only bother to inflate them to about 90psi, as I have to use the one-handed pump + crack pipe method due to the Hed3 on the front. 90psi is fine though I'd still race at 105-110psi

  • I use those same tires/tubes for all of my races. I have never heated my tires up before install, but I am VERY careful when I put them on. After you put a few pumps of air in, check all the way around the bead again to make sure there is no pinch.

I'd put them on now and get a ride or two on them.

I raced at ~180lbs last yr and used ~112psi +/- a couple in each. Do NOT go above 120psi, but I think 110-115 is plenty. Many people recommend going even lower to like 105psi, but I still like the 110-115 range for racing.

Remember to not have Latex Spares, only the regular Black colored butyl spares...

Victor, I'm a big dood at ~205lbs and used to roll with that set-up (I use Conti GP4000s now). I inflated to 120psi all the time.

Also, I'll see you in Shreveport/Bossier City in the dirty bayou water! I've done RCT 8 or 9 times over the last 11 years of my tri career!

  • Thanks team for the guidance.  I'll take my time installing and do it this week so I get a couple rides in.  I'll stick to 120 psi.

    Alright @Scott.  See you there.

  • sorry, just came across this post. Tim, can you tell me where you got that chart above for psi? I've read a bunch of stuff on the topic but have never found a chart by weight. Thanks!
  • Sorry Tom I dont remember... probably off ST ...
  • Tom,

Here's an article with the tire pressure chart by weight for wider rims (note it is slightly lower pressure with the wider rims) and it includes a link to one of the original charts.
