  • Oh great. So now the fact that I wrote about this Rhodes guy will get back to him. Great. image I do wish him well...
  • Olivia, I wouldn't worry about it. He was getting much HTFU, man-love yesterday on ST. My thoughts:

    • Triathlon is just a game. From my experience with a broken collar bone, it's either not a big deal (PITA, but nothing a doc can do about it) or it requires surgery -- plates, pins, rehab, etc. Total PITA). No one knows without an xray. IMHO, pretty stupid to risk serious complications by continuing to race with a broken collarbone. Again, it's only a game but that's just me. His decision but it wouldn't be mine
    • His friends that walked with him. If it were me, I'd say "doode, my decision to suck up and try to finish with this injury. The docs have checked me out, there are EMT's all over the place and I can get help if I need it. Serves no purpose for you to ruin your race by walking with me. Go run."

Ya never know what he said to his friends.  Those might have been his exact words.  But being able to say "Oh, my friend broke a collar bone and I decided to ditch my goals and help him get through the race - so I walked the marathon" sounds better than "yeah, I totally blew up on the run and just couldn't push myself any more".

    Sorry, was that too cynical?

Seriously, I saw the three of them cross the finish line together and the other dudes did seem genuinely concerned.  Just sayin there's always more to the story than what meets the eye.

  • Dude. Bad triathlon manners are just bad triathlon manners. One of the reasons I love this sport that triathletes are some of the nicest competitors ever -- because we all know we are really competing against ourselves and the clock. One of the things I have valued the most in long distance competitions is course camraderie. Olivia, way to show to dude how to be a classy  Ironman competitor. Let's keep the ratio of awesome people to haters high.

  • Sorry to all racing that I missed your day. I just read through this entire thread. All I can say is WOW!. I'd have to live in AZ or SoCal to even consider this race, but it is a gorgeous area. That is a COLD MOFO swim. Congrats to all that made it through and could go on.

I really am looking forward to all of the race reports.
