2016 OutSeason: Training Data Tracking and Body Composition Accountability

Team,

Two key elements of the 2016 OutSeason will be

  1. A Team / OS-wide focus on tracking training data: creating a culture of logging and tracking training data will create powerful training and analysis tools for us to us, as a tool, later in the season, especially during the Race Preparation Phase.
  2. A Team / OS-wide focus on improving body composition, through diet and exercise logging, and accountability systems: "Light is Right" and we want to do a better job of starting your towards consistent progress towards your goals now vs closer to your races.

I'm heading up these two initiatives and will use this space, and other tools, to bring everyone up to speed.

Tracking Training Data = Trainingpeaks

Trainingpeaks will be "official" training log platform for Endurance Nation, for the following reasons:

  • Very seamless integration with Garmin devices: go for a ride/run, upload your workout via Garmin Connect and it appears automagically in your Trainingpeaks log.
  • Integration with WKO4 for detailed analysis (more on this later)
  • Integration with MyFitnessPal mobile app.

We will make available to you shortly a discount code to save on a TP.com account.

Question: Will the Endurance Nation training plans be made available for upload into my Trainingpeaks account?

Answer: no, sorry. There are significant costs on our end associated with making these plans available for download into a Trainingpeaks account and we have to pass those costs on to you. We made these available to the Team a few years ago and the interest was exactly zero -- not a single EN athlete choose to purchase their EN plan in the TP.com platform. And so for this reason we have no plans to make our...plans...available for upload into TP.com training accounts.

Body Composition Improvement and Accountability = MyFitnessPal

Please go here to learn about the diet and exercise tracking system I've been using since 2010. For 2016, and for this initiative, we'll use MyFitnessPal vs LoseIt!

  • MFP has good integration with Garmin devices and Trainingpeaks: upload your workout via Garmin Connect, it shows up in your Trainingpeaks training log and is also logged in your MyFitnessPal account.
  • MFP has good group accountability tools: you can friend up other EN athletes, I'll create an EN Group on MFP and we'll experiment with this tool together over the OutSeason, creating powerful body comp accountability tools we can all use for the rest of the season.

Coach Rich's Desired Endstate

  • Athletes are tracking and logging their training data within Trainingpeaks by simply uploading their workouts to the cloud via Garmin Connect (or Express...ugg...I lose track of how this all works!)
  • This information is pushed into your MyFitnessPal account, within which you're (1) setting goals, (2) logging your meals, and (3) plugging into the social accountability tools we'll create in MFP together.
  • As the months tick along we all, as Team, become more familiar with the training log analysis tools of TP and WKO4, created additional opportunities for us later in the season.

Please watch this thread as I build out these tools for you. Thanks!

  • MFP also has a very good food database...not curated but people can "verify" the entries that other people make. Also the inventory of bar-codes is gigantic and it seems like almost anything you scan with a phone is in there. I do wish you could filter for items in the USDA database. I have been using MFP since the day that TP discontinued its nutrition logging capability in favor of a partnership with MFP. Good move to migrate to this one, Rich.
  • Slick, doode! I am in!

myfitnesspal.com is addicting.  I juts spent 20 minutes setting it up.  I like it.

  • Here we GO!!! No falling off the wagon here. Thanks for this great support Coach...this plan is extremely thorough!! I am ready to work and DO THIS!!!

  • yep

i need that accountability piece for sure

    im in

  • I am glad to see that GarminConnect syncs my workouts with MyFitnessPal, which then gets synced into TrainingPeaks. Sometimes my head starts to hurt trying to remember to load my workouts in all the places I have started.   One question, if we purchased WKO+ version 3, is WKO4 a free upgrade or do we have to purchase that? If it's a new purchase, do we have an EN discount code for that?  Thanks!

Ed, we have now special deals for upgrading to WKO4. We do have a discount code for TP.com, which we'll share, but nothing for WKO4

  • +1 on the thumbs up for MFP. Been on it for 418 days (but who's counting...) and it integrates nicely enough with TP.  Mucho accountability with EN friends on the app. Had a Core Diet consult and just shoved all my data to the nutritionist and she got the whole (good bad and ugly) picture.   Nice move coaches!  #datageeksunite

  • I would be interested in the TP discount code, I have held off up to now because of the cost. For the team mojo though, I am in.
  • WOOT WOOT! I got them all to talk to each other and I didn't have to call the nerd squad. Now I have to figure put how to us training peaks.

Are we going to do a dedicated body comp. thread like we did a couple years ago?

  • felt bad adding tin MFP he beer I had at lunch ! hah.
  • In!  Let's get started.

  • Withings scale is very cool too... it weighs you, collects body fat % & HR and posts all (wifi) to Training Peaks (or other software) where TP uses the weight for watts/kg updates.

Yes. I need to wrap my head around how we should work the accountability piece of this initiative, given the social tools of MFP that I'm unfamiliar with.

So....do any MFP vets out there have any input for us?

  • I was able to create an "Endurance Nation" group in my fitness pal easy enough. Anyone want to try to join and see if it works for us? I kept it set to private which would keep the lurkers out but requires someone to accept members…

I just requested access to MFP group.  Lemme know if you see it.

I love me some Withings scale.
  • I did and accepted you! We're cooking with gas now! <--- See what I did there? Because cooking... because weight loss… Never mind. image
  • Jenn,

Just requested on MFP too. I think it will come across as myah3644 requesting.

    Thank you, Jacklyn

  • Yep got you too - we have five members already!
  • In in and IN!  I'll approve all requests as soon as I see them.  #goteam!

I love the Withings scale. In fact, I love it so much I have 2 of them.

  • Is this training peaks thing only for the outseason, or a permanent platform for the entire year?

Trainingpeaks is on you, ie, whatever use you think you'll get out of it. But it, especially the PMC and other WKO4-type tools are most useful closer to races.

  • (looks in the mirror at his rapidly expanding Irish behind, and sighs...)

    I'm in.
