Coach P Is Okay...The Tour Must Go On!!!!

Hey everyone, this is coach Patrick here. I am writing to you from San Jose, California, where I am in a hospital because I crashed my bicycle yesterday.

First of all, I want everyone to know that I am okay. I am in good hands with the hospital, and I have lots of local support working to get me back home to my family in Boston. Basically, I have broken my collar bone and I have fractured my pelvis, both of which do not require surgery, which is great news, but do require a lot of rehab work. So I'll have a couple weeks of learning how to walk again and managing all of that, and I look forward to doing that with your support and keeping you in the loop.

Thank you so much to all of you who called, e-mailed, texted, and even driven in here to see me and visit me and make sure that I'm okay. I am totally okay, and I feel like we have a good plan in place. I want to apologize in advance for not being so present in the forums. I just had a tough time getting on-line and typing actually with my collar bone. But hopefully that will all change soon. Thanks again for all your support, all your good vibes, and I have returned them to you and I look forward to being in touch with you again when I am in a much more stable condition and place. Thanks.

  • Glad you're OK P....I leave a few days early and miss all of the fun image. Seriously, take care of yourself...you have a long life of endurance fun in front of you.

Be well and I hope you get back home safely.
  • Patrick- Glad to hear you are ok. Sooo sorry to hear about the crash! Hope you are feeling better soon. Once you get back to Boston, if you need help, Baltimore is not far away. Wishing for  a speedy recovery, but know the next few months will be a challenge. Let us know what we can do to help!

     best wishes

  • Now that we know you are "okay" if you don't mind sharing on how  it happened? And if you looked more like me you would of bounced  thats the problem with you skinny people no padding.

  • Coach P - glad you're okay and resting up.  Super news that it's just breaks and no soft tissue damage.  That should make for quicker recovery!  I hope you at least gave the pavement a run for its money.    When I ate dirt last year the funniest thing I heard immediately after was this:  "holy shit, you stopped your bike with your face!"  despite hurting (a lot) I couldn't help but laugh.   Join us in the injured athletes' thread when you're ready - we'll be there for you 110%!

  • This is usually asked as a joke when someone gets in an accident but how's your bike?

  • Patrick, I am just one of the newbies but you have been so kind, patient and "always there" for me and everyone. I am deeply touched by your courage and your positive spirit. I am just sending you healing thoughts and know that many care for you and please please take care of yourself and NOT worry about everyone else. I am sure you need to be "typing" to keep your mind off things, but as a shrink I am here to tell you, this is YOUR time and I hope you take it. I am so glad you are going to be ok. You are truly an inspiration to all of us Linda

  • Hmmm, typing with your collarbone? The MD types in da Haus will probably advise you to lay off the shoulder-based typing for now...
  • We've been so worried about you, and will continue to care about you as you heal. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

  • Ouch. Sounds like quite a spill. Here is hoping for a speedy recovery Patrick!
  • Coach P,

Willing to help out where I can. Can stay at my place until you heal (I do have stairs and I'm not sure I can carry you very far!). Also, if you need driving help, I'm available.

    Get well soon!

Saw Trent on the EN ride today. He looked pretty good.

  • Glad to hear you guys are okay.  I hope everything heals quickly and the recovery is speedy.

  • Good to hear that you are OK and do not need surgery. Take the time that you need to heal well. Feel better soon.

  • Glad to hear you're relatively ok! Very impressed by your positive outlook. Sounds like rehab will take some time, but you're used to "work" so I'm sure you'll be a star patient. image
  • Things you'll do to get that full-on roadie look with the 'knobbly' looking shoulder! :-)
    You take it easy bro'!

No surgery to pin the clavicle? Insist on Ti bolts of course!

    Best,
    Dave
  • Patrick,

Definitely good to see you on the forum and hear you are doing good.  You definitely have a great attitude.  I also find it somewhat humerous that you are apologizing for not being around the forums.  Take it easy and rest up you just had a major crash on your bike.

  • Coach P, thanks for updating us. Positive thoughts your way! Will be thinking of you!
  • Holy cow! I can't get on the forum at work these days and I miss all the news!
So very glad that you are alive and functional. Please take the time to rest and heal. As you can see, we all consider you irreplaceable.
Seriously- once you are back in Boston, I'm only a few towns away if you and Maura need any assistance.
  • Coach P- Thanks for checking in. Just wishing you nothing but goodness, painlessness, and quick healing!!

  • Hi Patrick,       I almost fell off my chair when I read that you had crashed.   I am so sorry to hear about your injuries and very glad that they are not more serious.

I hope that your return trip to Boston is fairly comfortable for you.  I am sure with as good of shape  you are in that you will heal very quickly and will be back at it in no time.

     Take Care of yourself !!!!!

  • Coach P - I wish I could be there to pat you on your good shoulder. Take care.

  •  dude!

  • So glad to hear you are safe and hopefully on your way back to Boston and your family!!  I am sure they will want to dote over you somethin fierce!!  The body will heal, time is on your side   We can all be very thankful it wasn't worse!  Not that a broken clavicle and pelvis is anything to laugh at, but at least it didn't involve a car and more broken bones!  Get well, we need you

  • Patrick...would carbs have helped? :-)

Glad to hear you are well. Nice to know the helmet did it's J-O-B as we need what is in that noggin of yours to keep workin.

    V
  • Sorry P....take care and recover quickly. You are in our prayers.
  • Coach P....I'm glad to hear you are OK. You are a big inspiration to me and so I'm sure you will bounce back and come back stronger than ever.

    How did it happen?
  • Coach P - sorry to hear about your accident - get well soon.
  • Glad to hear you're okay, Patrick ... wishing you a speedy recovery and an easy trip home!

  • Dear Coach P, SOOOO glad to hear you will be OK! I fractured my clavicle last year and feel your Pain! The pelvis is only a long term problem if you need to give birth so I think you can relax on that one. But what drives you nuts is laying around not being able to exercise. It makes you frustrated and very very cranky. So remember all of us out here thinking positve healing mojo when you are in endorphin withdrawl and not feeling like your normal nice self.
