This was from my last longer ride a week prior to IMWis. The only change I made for race day was to remove the bottle cage from the down tube (and remove my Varia rear light).
When photographing your bike, gussy her up properly for the camera. Some parameters are firm: valve stems at 6 o’clock. Cranks never at 90 or 180 degrees. Others are at your discretion, though the accepted practices include putting the chain on the big dog, and no bidons in the cages.
@John Withrow Beautiful P5X! How do you like it? I'm debating between a P5X or the rumored new P5 disc for my next tri bike. Cervelo geometry seems to generally fit me pretty well, plus I must admit I'm a bit of a Cervelo fanboy going back to my original P3 aluminum bike.
Here's my P4 in mostly race trim. (I usually replace the dual-bottle holder in the back with a single-bottle holder for racing.)
This is my 2012 BMC TM01. I was going to replace it earlier this year but got fed up trying to find a decent bike. So this frame has a 2018 cockpit (Profile Design Svet Zero base bar and T4 aerobars), 2018 Sram Red drivetrain with Etap, 2018 HED Jet 6 plus wheels plus Powertap P1 pedals. Apart from the frame, it's a new bike.
@John Katsoudas - @John Withrow has a P5, not a P5X.. the P5X is a freakish bike and too friggin expensive ($13-15k) It barely has any discernible aero advantage over any other superbike as proven in the SlowTwitch user funded wind tunnel experiment...
The P5 is an awesome bike and as JW points out in his help me buy another bike thread, it's hard to argue for anything else.
also, everything I've read on your P4 says if you can fit on that bike, it was hard for many, ride it til it falls apart.. one of the best tribikes ever!
I just got my new steed, my Shiv S-works, two months ago. I'm heading out on vacation shortly (2 weeks, yay!), but will try to post pics later. She's a beaut, and fast as hell!
@scott dinhofer Doh! How the hell did I not see the seat tube in that photo?! I would claim not enough coffee, but it was afternoon when I posted. Thanks for the clarification. I agree re: the P5 vs. P5X cost-wise. The tunnel data comparing the two gives a slight nod to the P5X, but it's interesting that Cervelo-sponsored athletes choose the P5 over the P5X on hilly courses where weight plays a difference. I guess that goes to show how small the aero difference is between the two.
I think the obvious statement here is that there is a negligible difference between bikes. Missing are some obvious ones like the Trek Speedconcept & the Specialized Shiv, but I would expect them to fall right in the sweetspot of the bikes they measured.
It IS interesting to me to see that the P5 is still ahead of the 4 other bikes that were designed AFTER it. I also believe that if you did wheel tests on all 40cm deep rims, 80 cm deep rims, etc, that you would find negligible differences between them all.
It basically says to me that if you want to be competitive, you show as the athlete that is prepared the most and with a selection of gear that includes, modern TT bike (as in anything built since the shiv/ P5 came out around the same time) deep wheels, 40 or larger in front, and 80 in back with a wheel cover, have it fitted to you and well tuned for limited friction.. Brands don't matter, the engine does😎
Thanks @scott dinhofer. I'd seen that article/data but it had been a while. I agree that the difference between the P5 and P5X is small. The difference between the two Cervelos and the rest of the field is noteworthy, though. At 0 deg. yaw, the difference between the P5X and any of the non-Cervelo bikes is roughly equivalent to 10W of power (granted, that's at 30mph). I'm curious to see if the Cervelo "aero dominance" continues in the post-Vroomen/White era (the fact that the P5X is that fast is encouraging on that front). I agree with you 100% that the engine is far and away the most important thing, but I also think that sweating the details on fit and gear can result in a quantifiable benefit. For example, latex tubes alone are worth 5W.
@Mariah Bridges please clean the sticky stuff off of Phoenix before you show her off... And please take the picture from the drive train side (in your large chain ring please, with your cranks at 3 and 9).
@John Withrow oh my sweet friend....you must think you're talking to someone else... because Mariah doesn't follow rules. That was mid ride and if we are being honest, the only other image I have of her are at the bike shop on the clamp.... don't hate just bc even in the small ring with HARD WORK all over it, she's still BEAUTIFULLLLLL. Take her as she is fellas, just like her rider ;)
@Robert Sabo I fought my bike guy hard core on that one, but it ended up being the thing that gets the most comments, story of my life haha but I like the shark image.... baby shark dododooodoo baby shark do do doooodoo! ha
@Mariah Bridges I know you wouldn't post pictures on the Instagrammy or Snappy Chatty of you out on the town without your makeup all did and your high heels all sparkly... So why not show your awesome steed the same respect??? Just sayin'
@John Withrow guess I just like the dirty side of training, the real life and my real life is, thats the best I can do right now and still participate in the thread, she's keeping it real. I'll play by the rules closer to race day and not in the heck that is admin Kona prep right now
Everyone knows a true race setup includes the rider...so here. Only change since 2016 is removal of BTA hydration...I just use the integrated Ventum bladder and the single BTS mount.
2017 Shiv with DuraAce Di2, mid-compact cranks, Roval CL-64, CeramicSpeed bearings throughout & OSPW and Tri-Rig Omega X brakes. I think the Roval disk will be the next addition, replacing the disk cover.

not my Race rig, but my trusty F10 Road bike at the top of Maroon Bells during Al Camp.
Rule # 26
Make your bike photogenic.

Trying to get up to Mt Evans. Breaking all the rules: Small Chainring! Gatorskins! Training Wheels! 2.8l of water!
Going downhill 2000+ meters on a TT bike can't be a lot of fun

2013 Shiv. Upgraded this year to 11 speed SRAM Red 11/28 cassette, chain and eTap. Flo wheels, 60 front/90 rear.
@Derrek Sanks - nice! You did what I did to my BMC, no need for a new bike.
@Paul Hough - I agree. And really like my Shiv.

@John Katsoudas here's the wind tunnel data you need to look at, this was a self funded independent test by some active people on Slowtwitch. https://www.slowtwitch.com/Tech/Triathlon_Bikes_in_the_Age_of_Peak_Aero_6429.html

@John Withrow for the post of the week on the Instagrammy and Snappy Chatty....
@Mariah Bridges so many places to go with this but will keep it clean , unlike your bike.
Everyone knows a true race setup includes the rider...so here. Only change since 2016 is removal of BTA hydration...I just use the integrated Ventum bladder and the single BTS mount.
Y’all are all fired as big brothers! TO TIME OUT YOU GO! ;)

Jeremy - I'm amazed at how low your heel / how flat your foot is on the bottom of the pedal stroke.
