I am Ralph Moore and this will be my 5th OS with EN. Although I not actively racing Tri right now, I continue to train and enjoy the fellowship of a like-minded community here at EN. I am just getting fit (bike fitting with TTbikefit) on my new bike to start the OS and I am looking forward to the EN Blue Ridge Camp in the spring. Even though I have volunteered to be the bike captain for the JOS, there are several in this JOS group with as much experience or more than I have with racing Tri so there should be lots of good Mojo. If you have a question, just ask and we will do our best to be helpful.
Mark Maurer here. This is my 7th OS and it will be the most different starting out at least. I took last year off from serious training and I'm working my way slowly back into running after some muscle, tendon, and knee issues in my right leg. Biking is mostly OK so that will be my focus to begin this OS and I'll probably do some mountain bike races on the weekend in lieu of the scheduled bike rides. I'm registered for the Alohaman Extreme triathlon in December of 2019 and I plan on doing the Pacific Crest Beastman in June and the Best in the West HIM in September as a build to that. I look forward to getting back into it and feeling the mojo.
Hi Folks: A bit about me:
2019 Goals
OS Goals:
That's it! Looking forward to being part of this group.
~ Stark
The Wringer on New Years, such VO2! ouch
Happy New Year!
I am joining the JanOS for the first five weeks. Then I will break off from the group to train for the LA Marathon, which takes place on March 20th. From there, I will go back to triathlon training and do Eagleman with the EN team in June. I will focus on riding over the summer, and then return to marathon training in August. My A-race for 2019 will be the Bay State Marathon at the end of October. 2019 will be part of my long-term goal of running a fast marathon.
This is my third OS with EN. I did IMLP in 2017. Then tweaked my knee and had part of my meniscus shaved down at the end of 2017. I spent last winter and spring focused on recovery, but then was able to set PRs for the HIM (5:42) and marathon (3:48) in the second half of the year.
I am a divorced dad of three kids (aged 20, 18 and 15). I live in Greenwich, CT and commute into NYC everyday.
I am feeling pretty unfit and overweight right now. My last race was the Philly marathon right before Thanksgiving. Since then, I had a lot of travel for work, did regular yoga, and tried to be consistent with some light runs. I am coming off the holidays about 12 pounds above race weight. However, I enjoyed the holidays, just skied with my kids last week, so I am feeling quite happy with life and eager to get back to training.
My OS goals are to get back to consistent training, rebuild my running fitness, stay injury free and start the long process of getting down to race weight for my 2019 marathon. My goals for 2019 are 3500 miles on the bike and 1250 miles of running. I am shooting to shave 10-15 minutes from fall marathon time.
@Ralph Moore - Thanks for leading the charge for this JanOS
@John Stark - Your background and goals for 2019 are inspiring.
@Mark Maurer - Good luck with the training. You have some incredible races coming up in 2019!
I look forward to training with everyone.
Challenge accepted! 😝😁👍
Hi, the profile....
Naftali Presser.
36 years old.
This will be my first real OS with the team (joined end ofJanuary last year and was in middle of marathon training ).
Just transitioned from Los Angeles to Nashville TN for work.
Currently working on completing first 70.3 and full this year (IM chattanooga 70.3 in May and IMLP July)
through 2018 I have had an epic run in triathlon ( 2016 syracuse70.3: DNF, 2017 Lake placid 70.3: DNF, 2017 AZ 70.3:DNS, and finally the 2018 IM boulder DNF) - clearly some improvement it necessary!
despite this some good came in 2018: first stand alone marathon finish (LA), and previously i had never made it out of the water in time on the 70.3 swims and when I was able to get through that stage in the full boulder race before succumbing to the heat/altitude....
Goals for 2019:
finish! (IMChoo 70.3, IMLP that is)
Marathon: Los Angeles signed up for in March but will be function of call schedule....
drop weight 10lbs to put less stress on knees
keep consistent 20-25 miles/wk on run
improve riding aero (can never seem to stay aero for more than a few minutes at time...)
Happy new year and looking forward to a great season!
Hey all, this is my 6th outseason. :)
I am switching to 70.3's only this year. :) I am building from the ground up this outseason. I need help with folks yelling at me if i do not do my workouts. :) . that is the biggest need to me.
@Naftali Presser - Sounds like a heaven and hell 2018 season. Have you thought about adding the swim supplement to your OS this year? I have swam with @Tom Glynn for years and he used to suck, bad! No really, really bad! Seriously bad. Now he is a legit swimmer and regular KQ dude. He has worked very very hard to get there and I am proud of him. I know he/you are not alone in da Haus.
@Patrick Marsh - I had a similar experience with meniscus. After surgery ended up doing ultra's for a couple of years. Was a miracle. 😀
@Jonathan Brown - Welcome back. Now "SHUT THE HELL UP AND GET BUSY!" How was that? 😆
@Ralph Moore - Sorry, I lied. Broke 32 degrees yesterday so the neighbor went to the high desert and did an hour MTB loop. Was nice to look at the back of a rider that wasn't my avatar. :-). Was hero dirt all the way to the Cascades.
Hi all,
I'm 44 years old and live in Hopkins, MN with my wife and two kids (9 and 7). This will be my first OS with the team (joined in September in time for RDP) , but the last three years I have followed a similar approach during Jan-Mar, mainly focused on building bike strength.
I've been doing long course triathlon for the last three years (two 70.3s and one 140.6), with seven years of sprints/ olympics/ marathons prior.
My 2019 goals:
1) IMAZ
2) Break 4 hr 50 min in local 70.3 at end of August
3) Attain tri bike watt/kg of 3.5. I am at 3.6 on road bike and am hoping to drive my tri bike FTP to ~270-280 watts
4) Half marathon time sub 1 hr 40 min
5) Listen to my body, train smart, stay healthy and recognize it will be a long season with a late IM
My OS goals:
1) Push hard on all the workouts and really drive a good base of fitness going into the early part of the season
2) Learn a lot from the other team members going through the Jan OS
Happy New Years everybody and I look forward to following everyone's progress this OS!
@Naftali Presser - Welcome to the OS. This program will get set a great base for success in 2019. I look forward to seeing your progress.
@Jeff Phillips - Those are great goals for 2019. After my first OS in 2017, I got down to a 1:46 HM, which is still my personal best. I hope you get fast.
@Jonathan Brown - Good luck with the re-build. Be careful with the running. Listen to your body; it's easy to over-do it. I have been stretching a lot, especially my calves, so that I can stay healthy.
I just figured out how to load the 2019 bike workouts into Zwift. It looks like the process changed since last year. There is a description in the Zwift forum in case anyone has questions. Basically, you need to pull the workouts from the OS page and then you need to go into the Zwift/Workout folder. There's a folder with a 6-digit number. That is where the OS workouts go. You have to load them one-by-one.
I am going to have to ease into the running this year, as I will be trying to build my mileage to get to a 40-mile week by mid-March.
Good luck with the Thursday workouts!
Howdy all,
46 y/o out of Fort Lewis, WA; living in Steilacoom.
This will be my 4th or 5th out season here in the Haus! Last year's OS was by far my best OS, and the fitness I carried out of it led to some amazing PRs throughout the Spring and Summer. I'm not taking the same run fitness into this year, but believe my bike is better off.
I'm not really sure what racing I will be doing this year...I'll race sprints and olys as much as I can, and may do 3 70.3s if the fitness is there (Whistler, CDA, Lake Stevens?)
My main goal is to be as consistent as possible. Work requirements will be increased this year, but shouldn't really be an excuse not to get it done. It'll be nice to have the entire crew here for accountability; last year's Nov OS consistent of just me and Paul Hough:o).
I am traveling Sun-Thur, so may try to get my FTP test in on Saturday, and then hit the run targets while on the road.
Looking forward to spending the next 12 weeks with you all!!
Mark
Good morning to everyone.
My name is Pat Koss, I'm a 63-year-old retiree living in North Little Rock Arkansas.
I became an athlete in 2006 (started from nothing) and started by running marathons. Around 2008 I began running short course tri's and in 2011 did my first full IM at Wisconsin. These days I'm pretty focused on half IM's and running with my wife Virginia, who took up running (again from nothing) in 2013.
Goals are rough but I plan to do a couple of HIM's this year to build toward aging up in 2020 when I will be 65. God willing I'll race in 2020 with a goal of a HIM podium in a WTC race (I did that once in 2017 and its a drug). The "A" races for 2019 have yet to be selected. Close to home or reachable with a fifth wheel are desired, but focus areas will be Michigan (family) and Connecticut (a daughter in Easton).
I'll be doing all my riding on Zwift till the weather warms.
Hi, all. Let's do this!
Bill Manard - 45 y/o. Currently in St. Louis, MO, but moving to Denver, CO in April. Started anything truly athletic in 2011 when I needed to lose weight, first SC tri in 2012, first HIM 2014 (the late Miami), and first IM 2016 (WI). 4th OS (I think, may be 5th).
My problem has always been carrying gains from the OS to a longer distance. As an example, my V-dot may predict a HM of sub-2, but I've never carried that to anything less than 2:30 in a HIM (in 2017). I'm trying to make run durability a focus this year (on the whole) without having significant other goals (other than getting my weight back down...).
Last season was particularly rough, as I had my slowest HIM and IM thus far. Probably the biggest reason for my poor performance is that my daytime job became more time-consuming, and although I was able to complete most workouts, I barely did that and took it out of my time to sleep and recover. I am addressing this partly with the move described above, as this will represent a significant job change as well.
I don't currently have any races scheduled, but I plan to register for 70.3 Boulder. I'll be here in the JOS through 31 March, when I'll be heading on a long-scheduled dive vacation in Raja Ampat (on a small boat, so running and biking are definitely out of the equation for a couple of weeks). It's after that trip that I'll be moving and making future decisions for the year (races, training, etc.).
That's enough whining on my part; time to get to work! I'll be riding nearly exclusively on Zwift, and most of my running will be there as well (for convenience as much as anything).
Hey guys - looking forward to JOS.
I'm 52, living in NJ, commute to NYC where I am a lawyer. It is challenging to find the time to WO, but try to do so in the am.
Second OS with EN. Last year was a bit of a bust because I lost the season due to an Achilles injury that began at the end of May. While I've improved significantly, I'm still dealing with the pain, but am hopeful that with bike focus, I can make it through the season.
My goal is CT 70.3 and IMLP. I've also signed up for NYC 1/2 marathon (March) and GFNY (May). I'm planning on attending @scott dinhofer camp, and perhaps another one.
As I'm still relatively new to the sport, forgive my questions even if they are in the Wiki. Look forward to seeing you on Zwift and in the chats.
BTW, is there a Group Me chat for JOS? If not, can we get one?
Look forward to training with everyone.
@Andrew Lustigman I am in Long Island City. Where are you in NJ?
I'm in Northern NJ just over the GWB (Woodcliff Lake). Let me know if you ever want to meet on 9W to ride to Piermont/Nyack.
Hey all, Patrick Hayden here, from St. Louis, MO. This is my 5th or so OS, took the last couple years off from tris, so get to rebuild a bit, but I kicked back in on the running/biking this summer so have been building up the base fitness.
Goals for OS are to really kick my bike fitness up and start to add in some speed on the runs again. I'm signed up for HIM Boulder and IM Florida next year so those are my key races. As to season goals, this year I am all about consistency aka getting things back in place and getting the workouts in.
Good question on GM @Andrew Lustigman
Maybe @Brenda Ross or @Mariah Bridges can answer whether Group Me is available for Jan OS?
@Andrew Lustigman @Jeff Phillips - ask and you shall receive. Here is the link to join your JOS Outseason Group Me. https://groupme.com/join_group/46887690/eA84FO
Hello!
Zach Bennett - 30 year old living in Fort Collins Colorado. I have a few smaller races throughout the spring with my A race being Boulder 70.3.
This is my first outseason with the team! My goal is to really build up some bike fitness as that has been my weakness in my last couple races. I had to cut the run durabilty program short just do to a few nagging injuries so I am going to spend the first part of this outseason building up some run durability as well and doing less speed work.
Hope to see some of you guys out on Zwift.
Hello everyone! This will be OS #3 for me. I live in Marietta, GA (East Cobb area), married, have two active boys (ages 11 and 6) and work full time as a federal contractor where our group manages federal real estate.
Yesterday I signed up for IM Chattanooga which will be my A race this year. Chatt will be my second full IM. I'll also do a 70.3 and a couple of Olympic distance races as well. This past season, the focus was on 70.3 distance and did Haines City, Chattanooga and Augusta.
I completed the RDP and did a 70 day run streak. Looking forward to the OS bridging over into the reg season. I will continue Zwift races and the weekend ABP rides with the team as well.
My athletic background is as a competitive Div I swimmer with the Univ of Delaware. My specialities were IM and distance. I got into triathlon about 11 years ago after the birth of my first son. Then it was "dabbling." A couple of years after my second son was born, I really got into the sport. I joined EN October 2016. This season will be my last in the 40-44 AG 😬
Looking forward to this group!! See you out there.

Question for the group on bike workouts. I'm going to run the TrainerRoad workouts and ride in Zwift at the same time. I'm assuming it's as simple as loading the appropriate week, day, and level workout in TR (I see the workouts in the TR app although the grouping is not in chronological order). Or am I missing something?

@Brenda RossI tried to complete the Heads/Tails document and had difficulty. I was signed into Google docs and after completing a few cells I get a message stating I am no longer authorized to edit the document. Is there something I can do on my end to fix this?
Ok just can’t get started!! - need some motivational help and accountability
Ok so here is my plan.. take it one week at a time and stay on plan!!!
@Brian McCartan - Welcome to the team!
Looks like we have a great group shaping up for JOS. Looking forward to being flogged by all of you over the next 12 weeks.
M60-64 (Age-Up Year) in for my 8th OS. Swimming background, learned to bike and run well enough to jump into triathlon in 1982. Lots of stories. Came to EN from my volume-based program because I like intervals (I’m a fish). Five “grown” kids, professor at Texas Tech Medical School, where I live on the Buffalo Springs course. I’ve been competitive at short course events, and I’ve “tried hard” at 10 IM’s through the years. Since a bike crash just before a move and new job in 2014, I’ve struggled with a couple of untimely injuries and work responsibilities... my only real race success being at the ITU LD Worlds in 2016. I’ve been healthy and consistent with my training since last May, and am looking forward to JOS And a solid 2019. I’m using the bike-focus plan. Controlling my run pace and volume will keep me healthy; and following the plan will get me where I need to be by mid-April. I’ve arranged my work schedule around the triathlon season, which unfortunately, means two “tours of duty” (2x2weeks) during the JOS. That will be like a “Hang-On” Zwift Ride, but will leave my Build periods clear. I will quietly swim during the OS. For me, this is essential for my back and hips... and I am going back to Masters Swimming with an eye toward USAT AG (Oly/Sprint) Champs in Cleveland, and Aquathon Champs (as a warm-up for the Long Course Tri Championships) at Miamiman in November. Buffalo Springs 70.3 is my home field in late June, and I’m all in. Plenty of sprints and Oly’s to keep my high-end satisfied.
Gotta join in to add some females to this group!!! Where are all the ladies?? :)
60-64 (age up year too... so excited for this!!) I think this is probably my 5th or 6th OS (in da haus since 2011), but... I've never executed fully. Really hoping to change that this year after 2 offish years due to life/job/injury stuff. I'm a long-time runner and been doing this multisport craziness for 30ish years, starting du in the Kenny Souza days! Married, 1 daughter just off the payroll (graduated this past May) and happily employed in Dallas, 2 dogs, and 1 cat, living in Pleasanton, CA. Work full-time+ for GoDaddy in Product Analytics.
Goals this year - EXECUTE! Consistent core / strength work (to prevent any further back issues); top 10 at ITU LC Worlds; and very solid push for KQ at IM MD (including my first well-executed run)... this will be IM #7, and I'm yet to run to my potential. Various other runs / shorter course tris along the way, taking advantage of being the "youngster" in my new AG.
Looking forward to getting to know you all over the next couple weeks!
Wait! What!? Miss @Julie Pfeifle is in JOS? Holy crap! This just got real!
😁
