2010 Holiday Run Challenge
2010 Holiday Run Challenge
8 Days, Saturday to Saturday, 12/25 to 1/1
Stay fit and have fun this holiday season -- Join your crazy EN teammates for an 8-Day Run Challenge. This is a solo challenge to keep all of us fit and active over the gap week between Christmas and New Years...especially if you can't score a trainer to ride on! If you want to you can "align" yourself with a Team just by putting a team name in the tracking spreadsheet.
- Last year we had 119 folks play...want to beat that number!
- New for 2010: Compete with your 2008 or 2009 self...try to beat the numbers!
So lace up your shoes, fire up your Internet connection and start planning those runs!
Point Scoring:
- 1 point per mile run.
- 1 additional point for each hour run (whole numbers only 1, 2, etc.)
- 1 additional point for a run in sub-32 degrees weather.
- 1 additional point for each mile run at (or above) Threshold Pace (10k pace).
- 5 bonus points for running all 8 days of challenge.
- Note: This runs on the honor system, please only post your actual run results.
- Fitness is it's own reward...really!
- We'll have to brainstorm out the rewards based on who enters (age, gender, etc., are options!).
If it takes me one hour to run 8 miles in 40-degree weather with 2 miles at threshold... I get 8 x 1 point for distance (8), 1 point for 1 hour of running (1), 0 points for sub-32 degree running, and 2x1 point for the threshold miles (2)...I will have earned 11 points for my run.
Instructions:
- Join the 2010 Holiday Run Challenge Group.
- Invite teammates to participate; consider forming a Team!
- Enter your name in the Spreadsheet (be careful not to fudge anyone else's info!).
- Calculate and update your Holiday Runs daily, starting on 12/25, using the calculator ta.
- Log daily workouts in spreadsheet tool. Talk smack + post pics in the Group.
- Earn points and get fit!
FAQs:
Where is the spreadsheet?
It's online as a shared Google document here.
Do I need a Google account?
You shouldn't need one, but you _do_ need to be careful when entering your data that you only touch your space in the spreadsheet and not anyone else's!
How do I create a team?
Just write in a team name and the sheet will start calculating your team data.
How do I post a picture?
Go to the 2010 Holiday Run Challenge Group and then click on the Upload Picture icon just below the black bar. Click "Browse" to find it on your computer and then enter a caption...and voila, you're live!
Technical Difficulties?
Please post to the "I Need Help!" Group Thread or consider posting to the Admin Forum.

@Mike H- I see you're back at the head of the pack again this year.
Are you thinking about doing any crazy match again this year?

Should I bother doing this if I am starting on week 9 of OS? on Monday the 27th?
Newbie question regarding OS training and the Holiday Run Challenge... Should I be doing my regular prescribed OS workout first, then layering in extra volume? I'm in week 12-13 of the OCT OS and we're doing more high-intensity short stuff, and we'll be re-testing FTP and vDot again early next week... If we do a high run-specific week now, should we be re-doing week 13 before we test? I realize this could be a Micro-thread question, but figured many people considering the Holiday Run Challenge may have already thought about this, or like me might have the same question... Thoughts?
I'm planning on adding the run challenge to my outseason training.
@John, I've got something fun in the planning stage
@Chris, surely you meant to say "I AM GOING TO CRUSH most OF YOU!!!"
Just setting out the expectations, like last year I will be bailing out of the OS this week, as it's time for me to focus on running.
I am also planning on doing some hill work, with a HR meter, and doing hills at 10k HR "pace". Is everyone OK with me taking a 10k pace point for those miles? And to keep it fair, the HR also needs to stay elevated on the down hills - and I can tell you, keeping a 10k heart rate when running downhill is difficult.
If Chris' Secret Santa hasn't sent a gift yet, I would suggest a case of Kleenex, or a nice cotton cryin' towel.

@John and Stephen: if you go heavy on the run mileage then do not do the OS workouts too. I think that will increase risk of injury. If you want to stick with OS then go ahead and layer in some extra running if you like, but don't go over board. The people who will "win" the challenge will do minimal biking this week.
Is Egg Nog a good recovery drink?
@Rich - Egg nog is ABSOLUTELY a recovery drink!

Today after Bfast went 6 miles with daughter, sunny again, 26*, 2 miles at T-pace for 9 points! More to come tomorrow.
@Daniela, @Kevin - I'm with your two; it's going to be a lot more practical counting xc ski miles than trying to get a run in up in the mountains early next week.

Did a quick 4 on the mill today when the kids were playing with the loot and the wife was in the shower. One of them was at TP for a total of 5 points. Not sure whey I am showing 2 bonus points on the spreadsheet. Headed up to the camp tomorrow afternoon and will be running in the cold and skiing everyday.
SDNNST= still don't need no stinkin team
Crap.... I just realized I missed a point for not finishing my hour.... I was 8:30 short...... plus I ran 8 miles yesterday that I knew didn't count.... just dumb....
I logged a nice relaxing Christmas run today with a couple miles on the beach...although it was 42 deg, not the 80+ I've had the last week in Tortola. Snow storm moving into VA tonight - bonus points for snowshoes?

13 points for me this morning with 3X1 @ 10K pace and 26 degrees here in Austin Texas!
Today was a recon run for the main event on Saturday
And now? Stretching, recovery drink, elevated feet, and recovery tights!
Mike
Way to bring it Mike! Hope you are recovering well!
