After the first 4 days with 4-6 miles of TP daily I really had to change it up today. Definitely some DOMS in the glutes this a.m.
Tonight it was 9 miles at easy pace followed by 3 miles at TP with full recoveries between for 17 pts(2hrs). Felt pretty good. Perhaps tomorrow it's time for more TP intervals.
My numbers are low, just happy to be running! I was in a boot for a foot injury in fall. I did 2.5 miles running, then ran walked the last 1/2 mile for a total of 3 miles. My foot was good for the 1sr 2.5 then a slight twinge. Today was the 2nd time running outside since I was able to gradually start running again. Back at it again tomorrow
ran outside last night. weather said it was 40, but it felt cold to me... I had trouble warming up and staying warm. I think the holidays and the related weight gain are catching up to me - I had trouble staying in Z2. Argh. We get early release today, so I'll do a brick after work... another mile or two. woo hoo.
Well, up until now I've been doing pretty boring runs. But yesterday a buddy of mine called and said that some of our out of state friends were in town and did I want to play poker. Sure, but I won't last long. After one win and a nasty string of close second best hands , I left a little after 10pm.
With my wife needing to work on Thursday, I started to do the math, and realized that I would need to be waking up somewhere around 3:45am. Yipes. Then it hit me, I'd get more rest if I just git 'er done. So when I got home I pulled on my gear and headed out - at 10:55pm.
Where to go? Back to the party! But since I worried guys would start heading home, I decided to get there pronto. That was a not-so-great idea. A 5.65mile run got me to the party to say hi to folks, chatted a while (with the watch paused!) and then back out. I told them that I'd run another 4 miles away from the party, hook around and see if I could get back before everyone left. So I started running again...too fast again . At about mile 12 it was starting to get pretty cold (<40 or so), and I started to cramp, so I slowed considerably. When I got back to my friend's streed a car with the last two guys turned around and drove with me for a few blocks - letting me know that a) I'm nuts, and b) Wow you're going slow! (that's what friends from kindergarten are for!!).</p>
I did the math, and realized that by the time I got home I'd be short of 20 miles, and then the arguing began in earnest. Sanity, and a rapidly deteriorating physical condition (cramps popping up everywhere) won out, and I decided to pull the plug. Got in the house right at 2am. It took about an hour to get my body stabilized and warm.
Total numbers: 18.7 miles, time: 2:45, no point for freezing.
@ Mike - You da Man! What do you eat for breakfast? 16d galvanized nails?
I, by comparison, am a light weight....I waited till midday when it warmed up to 31* then went out for a 9 mile steady zone 2 run. The only redeeming quality was running in slushy snow on the shoulder of Rt 2, which I really hate. Although it is better than getting run over by a logging truck.
So, 9.0 miles, 1:15, sub 32* gets me 11 points for the day.
Later this evening I need to get my VO2 max bike intervals in….. might be interesting after the run….
Six consecutive days of running during a Big Bike Week. Took a vacation week and biking easy on non-OS bike days. Will get four days outside including a 2.5 hour bike this weekend. Feeling good about staying in contact with endurance given late May IM. My wife was complaining that I was "moving kinda slow" while we were walking the dog this afternoon. Might have been the 3 mile brick after my Bike FTP intervals this morning. Probably going to lay real low with a 2 mi easy run tomorrow. Still no swimming!
I could only chug out 11 miles with 1 mile at TP in 2 hours today. My legs are really tired but not painful. Kind of like the bonk that keeps on giving. Certainly not wise to bump weekly mileage from 15 avg to 70 in 1 week. I've definitely cracked that 5% more miles/week rule.
Fueling/hydrating/stretching/ice baths/foam roll cannot replae appropriate resting. It's been an interesting experiment again this year. Since I've had no hint of injury I'll keep on rolling slowly for the last 2 days with only 20pts to go to beat my 2008 total but I'll fail to match the 121 from last year.
Good luck to all on the last 2 days. Way to kick it hard Mike, Martin, Peter and KDub.
@Martin - Yipes! If those are only your miles, then you are CRUSHING the points!! Well done!
Mike
Thanks, Mike...but I'm starting to feel it. After today, and 79 miles into the challenge, I'm ready for it to end! All but 11 were run on a .95 mile indoor track. BORING!
Mike you still a mad man. Did the round the lake loop today and felt much better after taking yesterday off by only skiing most of the day and doing the 4 x 230/230 thing. Still no chance of any TP miles.
Ouch. Today was a hard one. I think the problem arose from the cramping in the last long run. Thinking about it, cramping is REALLY hard, focused work on one muscle. So yesterday I really should have focused on rehabbing those abused areas. For example, my achilles Was aching pretty bad, which I attribute to the spasming in my calfs late in the previous run. Next time I will need to be stretching and rolling those affected areas. Today's numbers: 10 miles, in a little over 1:30. I ran 4 at TP, but I'm going to need to look at the Garmin data - I'm pretty sure I missed at least #3 by a bit. So my 15 points for today might get bumped down a point.
When I got home I had a gut check moment. My big race in June is 148 miles in 6 days, but this 120 in 8 days is royally kicking my butt. It's starting to sink in...yipes, what have I gotten myself into!?!??!
Tomorrow should be fun. I'll start a new thread to invite folks into the madness.
@Mike: anyone who attempts a 20 miler in the dark AFTER a night of cards with buddies has my ultra hero vote! Hope the recovery goes well today... can't wait to see what tomorrow brings :-)
Congrats to all on some serious mileage so far! It's been fun to follow along and try to keep up just a bit. I've been trying to get some threshold points these last few days. Yesterday was a simple gut check.. wanted to quit after 5 minutes but ended up doing 5 total with 3 at TP, mainly b/c I knew I was coming back to a house full of friends, food, and fun. 'Tis the season.
Tonight my wife (Regan) and I are accompanying our 13 year old on her first 5K run... what a great way to ring in the new year!
10 points for team EN Norcal, Baby! today. 8 miles, 1 at TP, >1 hour.
All the best for tomorrow night's madness at Chrissy Field, Mike.
Neil
@Neil - solid points for solid work. As for the Chrissy Field timed run, I had considered it but am not going to do it. I think trying to run for 6 hours right now would bury me! I'm definitely into the "residual fatigue" zone.
Tried to get my Thursday bike 4 x 2.5/2.5 this AM but crashed and burned after the second set... never finished. Legs too spent from all the days of running... especially after weeks of no volume.... Tomorrows bike may turn into a steady Z3 effort....
Ran at dusk today - 9 miles total in 1:13, 37* when I left - 34* on return. Miles 6 and 9 were sub T-pace (7:11 & 6:59).
9+1+2=12 for a total of 59 so far.
1 more day to go. Hope to get 12 miles in tomorrow then take a 2 day break before returning to full on OS training with some form of marathon hack leading to Boston.
@Tracy: Congratulations!! Very happy for you. @Martin: Wow! That's a huge result and an awesome way to start the year.. and was all that on an indoor track?! This has been a lot of fun again this year... thanks all
@ Martin - that is an awesome pile of miles! @ Mike - not sure but you must be in the triple digits too... you are a running machine!
For me I did 7/8 on the challenge (plus 1 Christmas Eve that doesnt really count) good consistancy but I definatly feel the drain today. Took 4 miles to get the thick feeling in my thighs to go away so I could get to my comfy pace.
Today ran 11 miles all easy, 1:36 @ 8:47 pace.
11+1=12 for the day and 71 total for the challenge. Now I am ready for a well deserved 2 day break.
Overall miles for the challenge 54.5 (62.5 if the extra day is included). Normally I only get those kind of miles deep into my marathon plan. Here it came without any base miles. Sure doesnt follow the 10% per week increase most plans caution against. Yes, I am tired and fatigued but the WorkWorks principal did a great job getting me ready to make such a big jump in miles without injury.
Wrapped up the challenge today with 7.2 miles along the blustery Pacific Coast on West Cliff in Santa Cruz. 7 miles, 2 above TP, 1 hour, 10 points. 35 miles and 44 points in 8 days (6 running) - rather a good mileage week for me of late.
Thanks everyone for the challenge and the motivation to get out there and ramp it, and for the inspiration from our running monsters.
Numbers for today: 25 miles in 4:12, and nowhere near freezing = 29 points.
I checked my TP's from yesterday now that I've downloaded all the GPS data, and they were all a bit better than TP, so I won't have to adjust the points for Friday.
Finished the challenge with just 10 pts on the day.
Grand total- 72 miles with 24 miles @TP. Total pts 107 down from 121(2009) up from 106(2008). Way above my previous 15mi/wk base- truly epic.
@Mike- I can't tell you how much I enjoy doing this every year although the last 2 days are really hard!. Thanks for hosting and inspiring us again.
Looking forward to cracking 100 pts again with all of you again next Christmas. Maybe Mike has some hints for the best Holiday Run Challenge training plan for next November.

@Tracy, glad to hear you're feeling good enough to be out there running again. Way to go.
John
7.35 miles total (+7), 1:07 hours (+1), 1 above T-pace (+1)(actually almost a minute faster)
7+1+1+1=10
Way better than a deadmill....

Whoohooh! Back from two days of xc skiing, and back at it.
Something of a milestone today --- managed 50% of Mike's daily points for the first time! ;-)
8 miles, 1 @ threshold, >1 hour = 10 pts.

Hi,
I posted up a teaser thread for tomorrows run: members.endurancenation.us/Communit...fault.aspx
Mike
55 in Chicago right now! So much different than the Christmas run of 7 degrees.
Tried to get my Thursday bike 4 x 2.5/2.5 this AM but crashed and burned after the second set... never finished. Legs too spent from all the days of running... especially after weeks of no volume.... Tomorrows bike may turn into a steady Z3 effort....

@Martin - awesome, totally awesome .
Great video Beth!
I still have to pull together my stats. But it'll have to wait, I need to stretch, and eat, and stretch, and eat.
Mike
I did a 5 k! Ok, in this Haus, not really a big deal, but for me- Yippeee! Breaking free of injury cycle
The time, well, lets just say, I need lots of work on just about everything, but it can only get faster from here on out.
@Martin: Wow! That's a huge result and an awesome way to start the year.. and was all that on an indoor track?!

Stick a fork in me - I am DONE!
Numbers for today: 25 miles in 4:12, and nowhere near freezing = 29 points.
I checked my TP's from yesterday now that I've downloaded all the GPS data, and they were all a bit better than TP, so I won't have to adjust the points for Friday.
Totals for the challenge:
Miles - 125.42
Hours:min - 19:22
Points - 160
I've posted up particulars of today's run, along with a screenshot of the map here: members.endurancenation.us/Communit...fault.aspx
It's been fun this year. I was glad to mix in a lot more TP work than last year. But yeah, I'm ready for a break!
