yeah, you were euro'd out and smiling on that climb! and the picture the guy took of you was all zoomed in, so he must have been a europhile. no way i could smile on that thing. i don't know how to do links, but basically go to their website and scroll down down down until you see a highlighted text saying:
by the way, i thought that water stop at loop 3 was an aid station, so i stopped there mid-climb, but in the pics i see you kept riding. next time, i won't stop there.
Doode, I had every ounce of water measure out and was dumping stuff I didn't think I needed. That climb is just pure evil. And the right on Sunwhateverrise highway to the aid station that was always around the next corner...that was even worse.
Still, I felt better than last year. Last year my back, neck, feet were absolutely killing me. This year...I was just done.
Don't think I'm doing it next year. I think I'll go up to Sea Otter and see what that's all about, maybe enter the road race and be a roadie for a weekend...
yeah, can see myself doing it one more time, just to get it done the "right way".
it'd be cool for you to try sea otter, but i think you are wired a bit differently than most roadies. driving out alone to mt.laguna, riding that course, coming in 15th place, and driving back home on the same day = hard core at an order of magnitude beyond typical roadie! it will be fun to see you put the hurt on them though.
i'm still trying, but seem to not have the bike power gene highly expressed. i do well with running though and plan to do something similar to what you will do at sea otter, but on the ultra trail running scene after IMCdA.

@Scott: sorry about the crash and the kit! I crashed in my kit on my 1st (first) ride. Bibs, armwarmers, jersey and vest, and jacked. Sucked.
@Matt: you should see the first place doode, Drew Petterson. Total Fred bike, Fred kit and....wait for it...Powercranks. Guy is so skinny that his cycling shorts fit like Bermuda shorts. He won Cat5 at Everest and was wearing the same kit. I think he only has one pair of black shorts, a blue jersey (nothing on it), a camelback and helmet mirror. He makes you look like a big fat fattie...
Breast Cancer. Seriously -- I started "getting my pink on" when Gen was diagnosed. It started with the Save The Tatas stickers. Now I am up to: pink bar tape (as noted), pink cabling, pink striped tires, and pink zip-ties for speed/candence sensors. Just wait until you see me sporting the Fluo Pink Wingspan helmet at Louisville and Kona. And, oh yeah, a chain with pink links.
This winter, I wore some pink calf compression sleeves at our local TT series. Some dude started flipping me some grief --- up until I CRUSHED him on the course. Which, of course, I have EN and the OutSeason to thank.
@Tom - no stores really available on my 3-hr course, so I just carry more than I think I might need. And it just means that I am doing more WORK climbing up the hills. And WORK is good, right?
Remember - Save a life, grope your wife!
Joe
PS - do you think Velo Vie might be concerned that someone won't be able to figure out who made the bike? Seriously, do they have to put it on every flat surface?
My new helmet is the Wingspan version of the one my wife is wearing here.
@ Joe and Rich - the owner of the nearest LBS to my house has a hot pink Planet X bike with pink bar tape and matching pink wheel graphics. Since he's married, totally straight and one of the strongest riders around nobody is going to say anything. He's 50 this year (ugh) and in a tri earlier this month he had the 2nd fastest bike split in the entire field of over 1,000 and was pissed about getting beat. I've never asked him why the pink bike.
I tried to get the pink ZIPP decals from the manufacturer. They got all....shall we say....uppity and said that I had to have ordered the special ZIPP-whatever wheels in order to be "allowed" to have the pink decals. Not too happy with them about that one.
Paul, any chance you could get a picture of his ride?

@joe - I'm about to get introduced to some folks at SRAM/ZIPP. Once I have established a relationship, I'll see if i can get some strings pulled.
@Cary - good luck and keep us updated. As a athlete sponsored by Zipp I was too low on the totum pole to get custom stickers when I asked about it.
Zipp considers custom decals a perk for ZedTech customers (or their top tier pros) and therefore is unwilling to make custom decals for normal customers that do not purchase the a premium ZedTech wheels. However, once you buy a set of ZedTechs from them directly they will sell you custom decals (at about $200 a set IIRC) for the rest of your life so that your wheels always match your bike.
That said, last year Zipp outsourced the decals to a few different companies and if you spend some time on google or ebay you can get custom wheel stickers that might even come from the same place as the real Zipp stickers come from ;-)
Also, if you search slowtwich a member there does customer wheel stickers (Tai, I believe).
@matt - good info there. I'm not going to be a sponsored athlete. From what you're saying, it looks like they want definitely make it perk for the ZedTech customers and probably I won’t be able to get around that policy as a favor, time will tell.
@Matt & Cary -- thanks for the info. I will definitely poke around ST and eBay to see what I can find. That, however, has to wait until I find out what is going to happen vis-a-vis my cracked rear wheel (different thread and can't remember if I thanked you Matt. If not, thanks!)
@ Joe - I can ask the next time I'm over there. Apparently, his wife was lusting over the pink bike and Kevin switched to the "green monster". The wheel set was AOR (All Out Racing) and the pink AOR decals came from them. But you can get great pink cancer awareness decals from wheeltags.com. I gave my wife my old Flashpoints...pulled off the original decals, and put on IronGirl decals from Wheeltags...a purple/pink background. Fxxx Zipp. Yank their decals off and put on Wheeltags!

Gotta link to the MLBC photos? Pretty sure I was all-Euro pro on PineWhatever Creek Rd: jersey unzipped, etc.

I just looked at the link and the garmin file for the 2nd place overall rider was posted: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/79593160
He averaged 334 watts for 5:42 .... yes, thats 5 Hours 42 Minutues at 334 watts.
How's this for my shiny new kit? This was after my crash this weekend.
I'm more pissed about messing up my jersey than the crash itself!!!

Here you go.
Taken right before my Race Rehearsal on Saturday.
PINK bar tape??!! WTF, doode.
and 10 pounds of water! Everything else looks good!
