2011 EN Ice Cream Time Trial Challenge

It's that time of year to start up some challenges and Coach Patrick has requested we start the fall season off right with an:

Ice Cream Time Trial Challenge!

Here are the rules:

 - TT date is on Saturday, October 8, 2011....the same day as the Ironman World Championships.

 - Add your name to this spreadsheet but leave details (ice cream, etc.) blank.

 - Buy a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream (any flavor)

 - Watch Kona online and some time during the event do the challenge.

 - Have someone time you (or do it yourself) and eat that pint as fast as you can.

 - Post your results and pics/videos into this forum.

 - Complete the spreadsheet with your data.

Please note the following:

 - Ice cream needs to be straight from the freezer and not all runny and soft.

 - Do your very best to take pictures . . .or better yet take a video of you doing the challenge.

So who is in???

And to do some time traveling and get you all pumped up, here is the same time trial completed by Josh Choate (aka _noodle_) way back on November 3, 2008.

Enjoy.

  • That's Noodle in a KILT no less! "If it's not Scottish, it's CRRRAAAAP!"
  • DARN! I wish I could compete.... image Well, there is always next year.
  • Can we extend TT to Sunday? Maybe so the cheering Chicago Marathon crew and runners can participate?
  • I am totally in...plan on doing the DOUBLE: Kona and then the Ice Cream TT. I passed in 2007 and have regretted it ever since!!!
  • I want in!!  I am supposed to be at a wedding.  Maybe I can take the video during...  Supposed to cross race on Sunday....!  I am going to find a way to make this work!!

  • @Beth - Ice Cream TT while watching Chicago sounds perfect! We need P to grant an extension ;-)

I didn't even think that was an option, but I LIKE IT!  I am in as well.

I like the way you think Beth!  X3 on the request to extend the TT through Sunday please

  • A little more detail on the scoring for those of you who haven't played before.  This isn't a strait up Time Trial (best time wins).  We realized back in '08 that there could be advantages gamed by choosing a less calorie rich/ high fat ice cream.  So WSM Cramer came up with an ICSS (Ice Cream Stress Score)  and ICIF (Ice Cream Intensity Factor) to provide a normalized time for everyone to use as the TT score.

However, we then also realized that smaller peeps would have a bit of a disadvantage as well.  So the factors were further weighted (thanks to WSM Blazer) to account for weight.  (the WMICSS)

The math looks like this (get ready for an ice cream headache just reading this!!!)

    ICSS = ((kcals from fat)^2 / (total kcals * duration in seconds)) * 100

So, let's take a pint of B&J's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. It contains 1080 total kcals, of which 520 are from fat. Our ICIF is the fat kcals squared divided by the total kcals, or (520^2)/1080 = 250.37.

Our Ice Cream Stress Score (ICSS) has an inverse relationship to the total duration (IOW, our score must go up the faster we consume the ice cream), so we divide our IF by the total duration and multiply the result by 100 (just to make it a more impressive number). Pursuing our current example, if Rich plows through his pint in three minutes flat (or 180 seconds), that gives him an ICSS of (250.37/180)*100 = 139.09. Similarly, if Beth eases her way politely through her pint in 15 minutes (900 seconds), that gives her an ICSS of (250.37/900)*100 = 27.82.

The ICIF and ICSS metrics really serve to equalize the stress of different types of ice cream, so those of you who can take a pint of non-fat vanilla yogurt in 45 seconds don't gain an unfair advantage over the Chunky Monkey crew.

WMICSS (weight modified ice cream stress score) = (((fat Kcals)^2/(total Kcal))/time) * ((1/weight)*1000)

SO...substituting my estimates at Rich and Beth's weight, you get the following for B&J Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough example:

    WMICSS (Rich) = (((520^2)/(1080))/180)*((1/170)*1000) = 818.20

    WMICSS (Beth) = (((520^2)/(1080))/180)*((1/110)*1000) = 252.90

Rich still wins, BUT...if Beth substitutes a slightly tougher Coffee Heath Bar Crunch for Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and gets her time down from the BOP 15 minutes to a solid MOP 5:56, then you get the following:

    WMICSS (Rich) = (((520^2)/(1080))/180)*((1/170)*1000) = 818.20

    WMICSS (Beth) = (((600^2)/(1120))/356)*((1/110)*1000) = 820.81

    Beth Wins!!!

SOOOOOOOO, my point here is this:  Pick your Poison carefully!!!

  • @ Joe - A little dry ice in special needs bag, and then eat up while  rolling hands free down the hill from Hawi - should be no problem, right?

  • @Al - I like your thinking! The Athlete Guide made a big deal out of only nutrition in SN-bags, but Ice Cream has calories, so it is therefore "Nutrition" and is OK. Hmmmm....I can ride no-handed, but I wonder about the winds. If they aren't forecast to be too bad.................... image
  • I dont think I could eat a pint of Ice Cream, a dozen hotdogs, 2 pizzas yes but if I tried that with Ice Cream there would be bad conseqeunces

  • Anyone want to go head to head for best video from the ICTT challenge?
  • Where's the closest place to the finish on Ali'i drive to buy a pint? Or if someone wants to meet me in the Energy Lab at mile 18 of the run. Wait, I've got it! My cousin is a volunteer at the Energy Lab aid station--I'll have him keep a pint for me out there frozen solid. Can't think straight. Didn't sleep well last night. Have to pack up the bike this afternoon. Let's hope I don't forget anything.
  • @Nemo: That is so awesome. My 12 yr old said he would try with me and now I can teach him why he really needs to learn math!
  • I believe that I've been in Ice Cream TTT mode for over a month now. My aerobic swallowing capacity and the ability to overcome frozen sinuses is at an all time high---BRING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • where's the like button??? LMAO!

  • Unfortunately my wife says Shweddy Balls are not very tasty.

    THE ICE CREAM, you people!

  • What's the time to beat?  Is it noodle's time???

And to the guy who can eat the hot dogs and the pizzas but not the ice cream.  I assume you refer to lactose intolerance.  Let me tell you that there are MANY other options out there made from rice, soy, almond, cashew & coconut.  That's what I am going to do!!!

  • IN! With 3 screamin', ice cream eatin' kids pacing me. I am not even sure what my time will be, but I am in it to win it. One week to train with various flavors.

Julia- let me introduce you to Officer Ford.  The man who ate a hot dog half way through a Time Trial competition on a dare!  His afinity for pork products is legendary!

  • Great Stuff. Love Nemo's Ice Cream stress scores....and Noodles video was great. I'm in and will start my training!

Big Question is - Do I go for a small spoon ( like spinning up the hills) or do I go for a big spoon? ( like hammering the hills!) Since it seems more like a sprint, I'm thinking big spoon, but I'm concerned it might have too high of a variability index!
  • @JT: It isn't the size that matters but how stiff it is. You don't want it to bend.

Joe- I agree with your wife.  I tried them, wasn't impressed

And just a little more fun from the wayback machine.  Here's another one of my favorite ICTT videos.  This one is from 2009.  Kitima, as recorded by her DH Kevin.

  • Thanks for the video...Very interesting to see the strategy of going with the hot tea chaser! Assuming this is within the rules...? Also saw she went with the Big Spoon strategy..hmmm..will have to test this with some intervals!
  •  Embedding the Kitima vid.

Several goo lines in that vid.  But "Milk burping. Good Lord." has to be near the top.

  • Kitima, is that a trocar on the table next to the stopwatch?!?
