Let's see your Pain Cave

I was gutting it out on my trainer last night and I had notion that intrigued me.  Where is everyone else gettign this work done?  I live in SoCal, so I rarely train inside save the few days it rains here (yes, it happens once in while) or I just need a quick solution to get the work in and it is late and dark outside and want to watch bad television, etc.

I built my pain cave in my home office behind the gargage.  I used work from there pretty exclusively until we opened a facility nearby, but I still spend time in there working on projects and the occional work from home day.  It also doubles as guest bedroom in a pinch.

That is the LeMond Revolution trainer. The cassette is built into it, so you just hook your chain to the cassette and go. Feeling is very smooth without any tire or wheel wear.

  • @Nate don't you think it looks like an executives office Ha ho hum! Nice
@Dino how is the Lemond RT shape up good, bad, no comment! ????

The LeMond is actually pretty cool.  I was using the Cyclops fluid trainer and then got the LeMond during last year's Tour De France.  it was all over the race coverage.  The direct connection via the cassette is a vast improvement for me over the friction-against-the-wheel.  I would get slipage, tire wear and just didn't think it felt right.

The LeMond feels more natural.  The bike is really well connected to the trainer.  You can stand up and drill the peddles and it feels solid.  It also coasts really well if you pasuse for a moment, the unit spins down niclely like a rolling bike would.  Another plus, is that they offer an add-on computer that will give you power, distance, HR and cadence and a bunch of other data.  Cost of that add-on is higher than a top of the line head unit, but you are also getting a lot of the metering.

    Drawback:

    1.  The unit is expensive.  It is significantly more costly than a highend fliud trainer

    2.  The unit is kinda loud, which is abummer if you are trying to watch TV.  It spins a fan to create smooth resistance and the feeling of enertia.  The fan is noisy when you are making big watts.

Here is anoth shot of the cassette:

  • @Dino, thanks for the extra pics, very cool.
    @Steve, exact opposite of mine.
  • @Nate listen dude your pain cave is awesome and your abilty to transition from washer to dryer laundry and transition back on the bike is probably getting smoother LOL!
@Dino looks pretty solid for sure. Going to check out website, peaked my interest, thanks!
  • I bet you ride very fast with a giant baby breathing down your neck

  • Mine is not as high tech as yours...(and maybe a bit cushyt)...but it works....I have a Blackburn Tech Fluid Trainer, a nice strong ceiling fan and big sliding glass doors that I can see outside and open to help with air temp....thats Coach Troy on the TV....I was just about to begin climbing Mt. Lemmon..having to use my road bike this week as my Slice is in the shop.

  • Here is the Bassett pain cave.

  •  A little clutered, but this is ours....and, I'm headed there now.

  • Here is my "Kellermonster".

I post the picture so that i can have a look at it as well.

I just checked my logs in SportTrack the last time i was down there was 19.Dec. (1 week sick, 1week skiing, 3weeks travelling)

  •  @Philip, upload the pic as attachment, and than add it into your post.

There is a screencast how to insert a picture in the wiki (see the link at the bottom of the page)

I upload to flicker and then grab the lnk.  It is not a link to the page.  It is a link to the picture.  The cose you get is pretty long, but delete everything that other than this section "image.  Great way to add pics without uploading them to EN and taking up space.  Downside, if you think so, is that is your delete the pic from Flickr, the link to the post is broken and the pic goes bye bye.

The mirror is cool!  I wonder what my face looks like on minute 19 doing FTP.....

  • Mirror is a great addition...I use the TM at my gym...I like a particular TM that I use for every run...it is in a corner that is fully wall mirrored so I get front and side view of running form ..great feedback...I need to set up a mirror in my cave too.

  •  @Dino, trust me 19min FTP is ok, but you do not want to see after 42min FTP testing image

Yes, I wish I had more mirrors, like them for get some perspective and it helps me to keep my form in check, maybe I do a liitle project once i am back and make a mirrored wall and get some of the selfs replaced with something with mirrored doors. But I guess that will be summer project.

  • I usually just set the bike up in the basement where we have the projector. Then I am forced to watch horse movies with my 12 y.o. horse-crazed daughter...

The good news is that in the spring when the weather gets nice, I'll be doing 2-hour rides while she's in her riding lessons, and the stables is right out on the good biking roads.

  • My power penthouse; I can modify my temp based on how far inside or outside I go:

  •  My weekday setup, in the office, for those lunchtime z4's. On the weekends, if its not too much less than 40f  I'll ride outside , otherwise I move it all to the Garage @ home.

  • Mine:

    1. It is a room above my garage. Cold in winter but I don't bother anyone (or stink up the place)

    2. 2 TVs...one with DVD and one with VHS...I have lots of tapes.

    3. Little fan and big fan.

    4. 2 space heaters (it can get down to 34F in the winter)

  • Some pretty posh pain caves in the HAUS.  Meanwhile, back at the batcave, here's the other end of the spectrum.  Concrete and wood, cold all the time.  Love my basement, gets me in the right state of mind to go to some bad places.

    .

  • I have been doing the same ride in the mountains behind my house so often I have started to think of it as my second Pain Cave. Much better views then my primary Cave:

  • This is a picture of my pain cave. It is the only picture that fits in here without down sizing them and I'm not very technical at doing that so, this is my garage. In front of me are two single car garage doors. If it's cold out the door is shut and if warm the fan is on in front of me keeping me cool. I have Sirius Radio on the shelf and a clicker that can operate the channels if I want to change them. I usually listen to Studio 54 or Classic rock.

  • wanting to add a pic but when I hit the Add a Reply button I don't get the "attachment" bar option below the submit button.  AllI get is the Topic Review bar.

    Any clue?

I get the attachment option in other forum threads.
