  • I have no words. Glad to see the commitment to this craft!!! I am building mines - Sandy forced me to!
  • well, sometimes i turn the lights down to make it more cave-like.

  • @dino:  I would trade my pain cave for yours in a heart beat.  You gotta make the space inviting when you're indoors 7 freaking months a year.

  • Nice, Satish!

lots of good pain caves out there. it's the sweat that's left of the floor that makes them super!

I'll try to post pics of my dungeon soon.
  • Satish.   Nice.

Dino.   thanks for the garage link.   I like the italian guys project.          Big problem with mine is a lot of concrete will need to be torn up and repoured.

  • @Satish that looks pretty awesome, nice work on the build out. Curious.... where do you run in NB this time of year?

  • @Sukhi, love it. I have the exact same setup. Actually I put gym tile in the back half of my theatre room and set up a secondary program for the sound so that sound for riding is different than for watching...one button on the remote switches it over!

Love this thread, just now getting to reading it. Will post my pics tomorrow!
  • @Sukhi.  Thanks!.  Here in Southern NB I run outside almost all the time unless there is a big snow storm or something.  I usually stick to the roads as the trails are snow covered, but the traffic is pretty quiet an I make sure I am well lit/reflected.  Last winter the trails were pretty much clear all winter as we hardly had any snow.  There have been years when it seemed we got a snowstorm every week and I spent the entire winter on th treadmill, but the trend has been toward less snow for sure.  Are you coming out this way  ?- I can give you some detailed information on Saint John or Moncton.

  • When I grow up, I want a pain cave like Satish!  Bloody awesome!

  • Mine is still a bit in progress. Still need to put up the rest of the shelves, get an EN flag and im waiting for the after holiday sale on flat screens.

  •  @Matt, that's awesome! I love watching the big screen too while putting in the work. My home is actually for sale, so I'm going to consider putting in some training tiles in my next room. And yes I have the exact same set up with the sound system, a great option for changing things up. My last puke fest had me watching Lieto hammer the bike, while listening to Metallica... : )

@Satish, I was just curious cause I was out your way for a wedding and heard the winters can be harsh. No I'm not moving out that way, as we love the westcoast, but I will say NB is pretty nice. But I'm a big wimp when it comes to the cold... : ) so I don;t think I could handle those runs as well as you, I'd definitely need a treadmill. Out here in Van. it's 12 months outside.

@Anthony, Looks like a great place to "work" too

    This's a great thread...

  • Anthony - you have a huge pain cave. Do you have people come in and ride with you?
  • I dont get many guests but anyone is welcome to stop in for some hurt . Since i live alone i took up most of my basement. It was set up as an apartment so it has its own bathroom, kitchen (soon to be juice bar), bedroom (soon to be the recovery theater) and a storage room for all my tri junk.

  • Some very nice caves out there, impressed. Here's mine, out and back bike only track 18km each way with a 50km further loop at the end. A little way out (about 20-25 minutes drive) but no traffic lights, cars, taxi's, buses. Is great during winter right now with temps around 18-25C (65-77F) so OS should be great. Not going to be so much fun come middle of the year though when we get the heat of summer

  • Wow! That us cool, Kevin. I might be in Dubai for the Cup race in March... I may need some run route advice.
  •  Most times mine is outdoors on the back porch.  I much prefer the fresh cool winter air.  Plus it keeps the stink outside.  ;-)

  • That is a really great idea. I never thought of that. Do you still bundle up in cold weather riding gear or just "normal" cold weather stuff?
  • Dino - my "power penthouse" is on an upstairs deck, which has doors opening into the video room. It is partially covered, so on rainy days, I am dry. Depending on the temp, I can move more "inside" or "outside". Right now, @ 40-ish, my front wheel is inside, and my rear is out. I wear a tri suit or bibs, and during main sets, always pull the shoulders down so I'm just wearing basically shorts. When the temp gets over 55F or so, I need to employ a fan , even with no top, to stay cool enough. I still sweat enough to need towels on the handlebars and underneath the bike.

In So Cal, I would expect you would need a fan even if you could be outside training in a 55F AM coolish morning.

But it is a far sight better (pun intended) then being locked in a windowless basement; I have my full forest all around me and fresh outside air cooling me at all times. But the lack of forward motion means I get real warm when I start to do any work over about IF 0.7.

I've been waiting for it to snow here to get  a picture for the thread, but it looks like this is one of those winters when there's no snow.

  • We're spoiled with trainers here at the UCLA tri club. We have a bunch of trainers at the outdoor pool, so we can set up a bunch of those on the pool deck when we do our swim workouts. We also have a bunch of trainers at the track, which makes for some killer brick workout opportunities!

    Nice bike!

  •

My pain cave is my dinning room or family room.  Please see below.  This is what you get when you live in a condo.

  • convenient, though, being able to ride during dinner...

  • It does solve a problem. My wife likes to accuse me of "hiding out" in my pain cave. Having it the family room could fun for everyone. My kids could enjoy touring Sufferlandria.
  •  Here are a few pics of my own pain cave with a couple updates:

General overview - treadmill, bike on the trainer, ellyptical. Small TV in the middle with Uverse cable, Bose Sounddock. Jerseys on the wall are 'retired' from previous clubs I belonged to, or simply have some other special meaning to me.

Pain cave as seen from my 'bike service center':

Retired jerseys - cookie monster, Pasadena Triathlon Club, Umass Amherst bicycle racing club

More retired jerseys: Northampton Cycling Club (NCC / BikeReg.com), South park and Super Grover, Pasadena Athletics Association

My bike service center - kinda empty with still a few boxes to unpack and bikes from the garage to bring over.

Really enjoying my own little man cave here!

  • My very very primitive pain cave.  I keep getting boxed in with more baby totes and stuff to be put in storage.  At least i hold my little spot in the corner.  Motivation baby!

  • @Ben - Please tell me the Cookie Monster is not retired!!!!!

@Ben - Please tell me the Cookie Monster is not retired!!!!!

Oh yes, the Cookie Monster officially retired after the last PTC ride in September last year. That was the last time it was supposed to be worn, the end of a chapter. It's a couple sizes too big now hence I have no intentions to let it fit again.

  •  The updated Pain Cave with my new EN Flag

  • looks great! What is the machine next to the stationary bike?

  • @Satish: Thanks. It is a Pilates Reformer. I have been using a reformer for last 12 months and it has helped my core strength and hip/glute flexibility in a big way leading to better running. Kind of what Coach P refers to as the "yoga effect" on running but I think even more better with Pilates.
