@ Ed...enjoy those boys while they are young. They grow up so fast. There will be plenty of time to train someday. Before you know it, they'll be saying "Sure Dad go for your 4 hour training ride on your bike, just give me the keys to the car & the Visa card".
Jeff Sullivan from Boston NY (near Buffalo). This is my 4th OS. Starting a couple weeks behind you guys as I'm finishing up Run Durability #2.
My A race is IMMT and 70.3 MT is my B race. I'll throw in a couple local tri's and maybe a bike race as time permits.
I'm an engineer by trade so I'm fascinated with the EN approach (technology) to solving the IM puzzle. I'm a 58 yr old MOP guy who's thrilled to be able to play this game.
My family includes a wife and 2 sons (28 & 25). We're all involved in triathlon. My wife is a sprint specialist and was 15th at world's in London last year. Both sons in the military so training for them is hit/miss. Older son carries a pro card and likes the 70.3. Younger son covers all distances and is branching into ultras this yr.
Goals for 2014 - get to 3.0 w/kg (which has eluded me so far)....reach my vDot IM run potential this yr (missed by 20 min last yr)
Looking forward to seeing some of you @ IMMT or Blue Ridge cycling camp or USAT Nationals (I'm the sherpa for wife)
Hey Jeff! We will see you at both MT races:-) You are just behind my husband in your age group (he is in the 60+ this year). I am also a (retired) engineer. All very interesting. Funny I was just over the 3.0 w/kg last year but now that I've chubbed up and lost some fitness, I am under again! Can only get better from here! Looking forward to meeting you in MT!
It's time to introduce myself as I'm a few weeks late to do introductions, but better late than never.
Bridget Pichette from Hooksett, NH. I have a wonderful husband who also does tris and 2 wonderful teens, Kearsten & Nathan. (okay sometimes they have bad moments). I work for Stonyfield yogurt as the Engineering director for the Londonderry production facility.
I have been doing the Jan OS with you all. This is my second OS with EN. Last year I was building for my first ironman, IMLP. It was a good experience, but I want to improve my run.
This year my A race is IMMT. I will also be doing Quassey Rev3 along the way.
Can't wait to start racing with you all. Have fun training.
Really been struggling this past week- Not with the workouts but with finding time to do them. I have had to tell myself this is my "ME" time. They are only going to get longer. Ive started to put them in my daily calendar just like meetings and appointments, much easier than "when I find the time to do them today"
Thank you IROMAN founder for my daily inspiration today:
"You can quit if you want and no one will care, but YOU will know the rest of your life"
I put my name and data in the 'heads we win tails you lose' spread sheet in JOS week 1. There are still no predictions from the coaches. Did I neglect to push a button somewhere?? Can't fill their coffee cards if i have nothing to shoot for. Anybody else playing??
I'm Steve Mayberry, from Ames, Iowa. I work at Iowa State University. I'm 52 and started this crazy sport two years ago.
This is my first JOS with EN. My wife Ellen and I have raced IM Wisconsin and Racine twice. Coaches RnP have been great to us over the past 2 years; we have met, trained and raced with many EN'ers which we now call our friends. So I jumped on the EN train. Ellen is taking a break from IM this year. I look forward to the EN team experience with a goal to execute at a high level.
I have yet to perform anywhere near my potential in Madison or Racine. With the expertise of EN coaches and members, my goal is to dial in race nutrition and cross the finish line realizing it was the best I could do on that race day.
This has been a terrible week for anything called a work out. My daughter is sick, my husbands sick and now i'm sick. To top it off it's sunny, warm and no wind. This stinks!
I'm a little behind on the intro, but well, better late than never.
I'm Mandy Midgett originally from Fort Worth, TX, but currently living in North Carolina. I began tri's in 1995 and have completed 3 IM's.
A Race this year is IMCDA and maybe one other one later in the season. My goal is to take at least an hour off the IMCDA time from 2012 which I know is doable as long as I'm consistent! That seems to be where I have a problem :-( However, I am LOVING trainer road and the fact that your workout is not published until you complete it. If this is not true, and it will publish prior to completion, please let me live in ignorance
I have also integrated a pilates class at least once a week to help with my core strength since I suffered some low back issues.
I've also decided to stop discussing training with others outside of here so that I'm not influenced by outside opinion and chasing something that someone else thinks I should do.
Other races on the books is Raleigh 70,3- pure training race. Also wanting to do IMLOU, but IMCDA will determine whether or not I am at IMLOU.
One day I'll figure out how to get a picture on here. For now....it's time to get the run done and then get ready for the Super Bowl.
@Jacklyn, sickness has been going all around, I had a cold that hung around this past week. Get better!
@ Steve & Mandy, Welcome to the January OS!
@ Mandy, if you follow the EN plan and are consistently hitting the workouts you will see great results. In a few months when you're crushing your friends who were telling you what they think you should do, you'll get a big smile on your face
@Mandy-I've stopped talking to people too. I've chosen to trust the coaches. My husband is using his own plan. We don't really compare. It leads to tense discussions.
@Jacklyn - I consider training plans the same as politics and religion....discuss with extreme care. There are some people who hold their training plans with the same fervor amd will endeavor to convert you to their way of thinking.
Your results will speak themselves. And then you can just smile and say thank you.
Pay no mind to the folks who try to pick your training apart. This program will make it happen. I'm the other way in that when I encounter this kind of argument I wind up critiquing THEIR plan - and they shut up. I especially like the folks who always go out for those long slow runs to build their base and keep talking about some day breaking the two hour mark for a half marathon - when I know from previous seasons they reliably come in at 2:05-2:10. "Oh, but I'm not like you are. You're crazy doing all that fast stuff so soon. I know what works for me and I don't want to hear about all your PRs."
If all you ever do is long and slow, long and slow is all you'll ever do.
Heh. That really applies to me on the swim so I need to own up to my hypocrisy there. My shoulder just doesn't like to go around and around no more but I'm trying.
The corollary to that one on the bike is "If you never go 30, you'll never go 30." For me, it used to be 20, and then it was 22 and then... There's this little 3 mile stretch through the swamp where I've been gunning for 30 mph average since 2007. You could also say for run intervals and race paces "If you never go sub-(some number) you'll never go sub-(some number).
@ Steve - it will be exciting to see what you can do with a season of EN training under your belt. From training and racing with you in the past, I know you are one tough dude. EN training will bring out the best in you. Suggest you add some swim workouts to the Jan OS.
It is real simple....if you want to race fast, you got to train fast. People who train long & slow don't get magically fast on race day.
@Peter good point about illusionary walls. In HS it was a sub 5 min mile (no speedster) no matter what my head said I couldn't break 5....lots of 5:03's.....but never under. In college I ran 10k cross county in right at 6 min pace.....now 25+ years later 6 min miles seem a ridiculous dream. Today after 9 miles of mixed Z4 (+)and above Z3..... I finished a final 7:20 mile with 1/4 mile @ 6 and small change.....it hurt a bit.....but surprised me.... if I can finish a hard WO with a strong 6 min/mile kick.... is an Army 2 mile in sub 13 in my near future? Is a 6 min mile possible...(again)?.......if you believe it so it shall be ....
This has not been my week for getting workouts completed. We had snow here in SC which causes a virtual shutdown of everything. I have a broiler chicken farm and of course, the snow occurred on the day the chickens were headed to the processor. I was up for 2 nights with very little sleep and to top that off, I came down with cold courtesy of my 3 yr old. So it has been a rough week. Trying to catch up on my sleep so I can get these workouts in. Did manage my run today so things are looking better.

@Joe- I agree. I don't discuss politics and I don't really discuss this. I'm going to enjoy the first Velo ride this spring. The "guys" are used to dropping me off the back. They enjoyed working together to "show me" my place in the pack. If I didn't drop then they would get vocal. I'm going to greatly enjoy dropping them. I've already started dropping my husband. HEEEHEEE. An added benefit to all this sweat is I had to go buy a new pair of jeans. 2 sizes smaller than 4 months ago. Bummer.
I just wanted to say that after yesterdays run -although OS intensity is making me NEED these off days as realy "off"- I am enjoying going fast. I did my first TRI (mixed distance-sorta OLY) with <4 months to train and had to learn how to swim for > 25yrds and borrow a bike (hadn't ridden since a teen)....came in last for age and 10th to very last overall (58min to "swim" 800m)etc. So of course I signed up for an Ironman with 1 year exactly to train. I did a tough Napa HITS 70.3 1/2 way through and finished IMAZ('12) in 14:05....... But All that was built on:
1) I don't wana die trying! (aka don't drown)
2) I wana finish (preferably upright, under my own power and before cutoff)
What I am writing to say is.... that for the first time - I am actually exited to say I'm training to place well....to go far AND fast.
This is cool!
I'm also getting exited to hear about everyone else's road to success.
@David - I really hear you about needing the days off. After Sunday's run, I really needed the day off from the trainer and treadmill today. However, by this evening, I can see that I'll be able to survive tomorrow's WKOs...
I also hear you about the excitement of training fast! After three years of training slow and long, it's a change, but I'm already seeing gains in speed. I'm excited to repeat a couple of events from last year to see real performance gains.
