**NEW** January Volume Camp in Clermont, FL [1/15/15 to 1/19/15]

Folks -

Very pleased to announce a brand new training camp venture for 2015. I am calling it the January Volume Camp (1/15 to 1/19) -- we'll be on a mission to break the cold weather blues and build some serious swim bike and run fitness.

Why A January Volume Camp?

#1 -- It will give you an early season means of building critical volume. Most of us don't get to the volume "pop" part of our year until the weather turns around, leaving usually six to nine months between these efforts. This camp will be a chance to speed up that cycle, which is perfect for those of you in Year Two and Three of our Three Year Plan.

#2 -- This is good "catch-all" camp for early season races that don't usually receive any training camp attention -- from Oceanside and St. Croix all the way to New Zealand, Texas and even Brazil.

#3 -- Perhaps most important of all, it will help you stay sane in another ridiculously long winter of training. If thinking about the winter of 2014 still makes you curl up in a ball and shake out of fear, then this camp could be for you.

Logistics are listed online here, but here are the basics. The camp is a four day weekend including Martin Luther King, so you really only need to take one day off of work to sneak away! We can work with your Triathlon Season Roadmap (TSR) to make sure your year still works, don't worry.

Camp Training Targets:

Swim: ~ 10,000 yards.

Bike: ~ 230 miles.

Run: ~ 21 miles.

  • Cool! How does this work for folks in the OS which is "anti-volume"? LOL

And with it being January, and doing a "Horribly Hilly 100", it looks like some people (ie ME) might need to train for this camp.  Will lower volume options be available as well?  If not, as the name "VOLUME Camp" implies, that's fine.  Just thought I'd ask cuz I know I'd love to get the rock outta New England in January!

  • any possibility of renting a bike down there?

  • @Satish, there's this:

    http://www.clermontbicycles.com/rentals

I'm totally considering this camp since it's within driving distance. But I'm also wanting to do the yet-to-be-announced Tour of California Camp too. Decisions decisions!

  • Thanks!  this looks like fun- would probably combine it with a family trip to Orlando.  Yay Disney!

  • Let's see . . . this camp falls during Week 14 of my IMNZ plan, and it's a 2-hour drive from home.  That's pretty easy math.  I'm in.
  • My wife and I rented Trek Speedconcepts at the Cycling Hub in Clermont this past April for the FL 70.3. $ 100 / day. Great service.

  • Coach P, were you reading my mind? Perhaps having the NSA snoop on me? Dang straight I want to be part of that. First I have two fund two big destination races but should be able to register by Oct. what is the limit on the number of campers? Is this a road bike or tri bike camp?
  • @Kim, great questions! I'd have to adjust your OS based on the camp and your season, of course, but yes we'd have to have some extended workouts in there to make sure you can get the camp done. Part of it is the veteran element too…in year three plus of our sport, you are only 3-4 weeks away from being able to ride long.

@Satish, I can look into it for sure. I bet I could work something out. Hey, look what Marc posted (Thanks!): http://www.clermontbicycles.com/rentals As for vacation to Orlando, I am sure we can help with that as well (our travel partner actually started by working with Disney!). Note that Clermont is only 30' from Disney!

@Marc, tough call. Two very different experiences…the TOC is all bike, the JVC is all TRI. The TOC is almost mid-season (in May), whereas the JVC is meant to be a winter break!

@Mike I totally thought of you when I was making the camp! It's perfect…will be awesome to have you there!

    @Jan, that's a great tip..thanks!

@Paul, this will be great for you…and great for us to have you there! There is no limit to campers other than getting it started! As for the bikes, I was thinking road bike but if you are close to your race like Mike, then it should be all tri.
  • @Patrick:  Wife and kids seem receptive (surprise surprise),  We would need a place for all of us to stay while I am at the camp and they could do Disney then we would probably all go back to Orlando for a few days before flying home to the snowdrifts. Not sure how this works with the pricing.

  • Satish, having spent weeks of my life and a few years of retirement funds at the parks in Orlando, I think this camp sets up nicely for your family.  All of the parks (the 4 Disney parks, 2 Universal ones and Sea World) are SW of Orlando, and Clermond is straight W of Orlando.  So, commuting to/from camp and the parks will avoid driving through congested Orlando.  Disney is probably 25 miles due S of Clermont, with Universal and Sea World probably 15-20 miles SE of Clermont.  Pretty easy highway miles.  Patrick's camp page says you can get a non-share room at the camp hotel for $250 extra, so do that, have your family stay in Clermont with you and commute to/from the parks each day while you suffer. BTW, it's a great time of year to hit the parks - very mild temperatures (70s), sunshine, and small crowds.
  • Hmmm...my niece lives in Clermont and a friend always trains at the NTC for the winter and insisted I come and play. He's moved to NOLA, but my niece and the hills are still there...hmmmm.
  • Yeah Trish ... you'll think hmmm a whole lot more as soon as the first snow hits up there. Bwaa, ha, ha, ha!
  • what time do things start on thursday?  Could I fly on thursday morning and arrive in Clermont thursday afternoon?

  • @Satish, you could do that. Per the official agenda (http://www.endurancenation.us/camps/january-volume-camp-beta/) we'll just be checking in, etc, usually 6pm plus....
  • Paul, don't be like that!!!

  • Okay folks...so who's in vs out? time to start pulling this together... I promise it will be epic, and our travel partners tell me they can help with any Disney plans as well... image
  • I/we are in.  I will be training, wife and kids will be heading to the theme parks.

  • I'm considering it. Need to work out some of the details. If I opt for the single occupancy, could I have my travel partner stay with me? If not, I'll be in the same boat as Satish and have to find a place where we both could stay. Also, you are recommending the road bike if we're in the OS?
  • Yes, I plan on coming.
  • @Satish, great!!

@Beth, yes, single occupancy means your own room, so your travel partner would be a GO!

    @Paul, fantastic!!!

We have four folks sign up now...so we need to get to that magical number of 10!!!! image
  • I'm out. If I do a camp this year, it will likely be IMChoo camp...
  • OK - I put my money where my mouth is ... hope the camp makes!! I think going forward (I need to do more camps and less racing.)
  • Unfortunately there has been a change in leadership at my workplace and I am now only able to book calendar weeks off from work.  Unless the dates can be changed from wednesday to Saturday (to allow for travel home on Sunday), I will probably have to withdraw.  I will know for sure by Friday but its not looking good.

  • How much longer do we have to make a decision regarding the camp. I am up in the air about this one and can't decide.
  • Jeff - you have until 1 Oct unless Patrick changes the date. r/Paul
  • @satish, you can check in / leave anytime....every year folks have to leave a day early for a variety of reasons...you'll still get 3 of 4 great days of training...but I can't change the whole camp for everyone b/c of your work...keep me posted! image

  • Almost done with the final call for this camp...who is in? We are looking for a few more brave souls, complete camp info and deposit info is over here: http://www.endurancenation.us/camps/january-volume-camp-beta/
  • I just signed up! I just finished IMCHOO, not sure what is next on the calendar but whatever it is I'm sure I'll be able to enjoy this camp. Hope we get to 10!
  • I know it' s past the Oct 1 deadline - but the link is still up so....Is this still a possible go????!?
  • Leslie - Coach P told me it was on. Join us and escape the Minnesota misery!
