I've been out of the country the past two weeks, missed the ToC webinar, which I've downloaded, but not yet listened to. But I;m trying to get my plane reservation home lined up. So, questions: what time, and which airport, Ontario or LAX?
LAX, last flight out, or no earlier than 8p, please. Thanks.
And will there be sports drink powder, or should we bring our own?
I will have Gatorade Endurance and an assortment of bars and such. If you want something special, please bring that yourself. I'll have Co2 on hand but whenever possible we try to use the vans and floor pumps to fix stuff. I will send out an email with a list of what you should bring. Think tubes and a spare tire (could be used) in case you get a non-bootable sidewall slash.
It just got real. Dropped off bike at Fedex. T minus 11 days!
Yep, I just ordered $400-500 worth of Gatorade Endurance, had a good call with one of the support drivers (local guys runs a mtn bike shuttle service with a tricked out sprinter that can carry 12 bikes) and am arranging pickup of another Sprinter that I'm borrowing from a moto buddy.
Our other admin person, Brendan Shannon, is a good friend who recently quit his day job to become a photographer, will be taking tons of pictures for us, and Dino and I have talked about bringing along his drone to see if we can get some unique shorts of the Tour and the campers.
Artwork for camp shirts below. Jeremy, I want to talk to you and Trey to see if we can have these done on the dri-fit vs 50/50 shirts.
As you all prepare for ToC camp, I prepare for Mallorca Spain...two weeks of cycling! And, surprisingly, I think I'm a little more jealous of you guys heading to Cali than I am to Spain!
Just wanted to get final confirmation on who would like to be picked up at Sacramento International Airport on Saturday for the TOC.
Here is who I have responses from so far (sorry if the margins do not line-up properly):
Last Name First Name Arrival Time Airline Flight # Terminal From
Dinofer Scott 10:44 JetBlue 161 A JFK Cashmore Teri 11:50 US Airways A Phx Truscott Al 10:46 Alaska B SeaTac Behler Jeremy noon United 381 A O'Hare Sokol Mike noon United 381 A O'Hare Francis Dan noon United 381 A O'Hare Francis Paul noon United 381 A O'Hare Prough Trent 12:07 Delta 760 A Atlanta Robards Marc 12:07 Delta 760 A Atlanta
If any of this data has changed or I have it incorrect, please respond.
Is there anyone else who needs a ride? I have recruited an additional SUV if needed, so don't be shy. I or Christi will meet you at the baggage pick-up carousels which are all together on the lower level of each terminal. Weather for Sat is expected to be sunny with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the 50s. 10% chance of rain but that usually becomes 0% by the day before.
From the airport, the plan is to huddle at the nearby restaurant Swabbies. This past Sunday after Christi and our daughter Jenayu ran a 5-miler, we decided to recon Swabbies again. I can tell you it is still there! On Saturdays, their specials are: Biscuit and Gravy for $3.99 (but only til noon), 2 Shredded Beef Tacos for $7.99, 25oz Bud for $6, Southern Comfort & Coke for $5, and in celebration of Nueve de Mayo (ok, I made that up) they have Strawberry Lime Margaritas for $7.50. Everything a growing boy and girl could want the day before riding a bicycle all week. @Dino, feel free to join us if you get in to Executive before check in.
We will then shuttle everyone to the Holiday Inn Express by check in at 3pm.
Coach Rich should arrive around 4pm. The bike shop, Mike's Bikes is a 5 min walk from Holiday Inn Express (0.3 miles) and closes at 6pm on Saturday.
Dinner reservations are at the Old Spaghetti Factory at 6:30 for 25 people.
@Coach: That is my understanding of the timeline for Saturday. Is that your understanding? Does 25 still seem accurate for dinner reservations? Anything else that is needed? When do you plan to meet on Sunday to start riding? Starting at the hotel or somewhere else? Thanks again!
I don't think we need you guys to get to the hotel by 3p, as the hotel is likely to need me or Joanne with the camp CC and athlete list to check everyone in, get room keys, etc. Doesn't make sense to have all you guys sitting in the lobby for an hour waiting for us to show up. We'll be able to give you guys ETA's as we're driving.
Yes, 25 people but I'm sure we can add or subtract a couple chairs if needed.
Are you planning to ride with us on Sunday? We will leave from the hotel and follow the course to Davis. Watch the Tour go through then get on the road to our next hotel. I will be sending the cargo van back to Sac early to pick up Stephanie at the airport so that van could give you a ride back to Sac if you need one.
Team - was talking to Rich...I suggested a massage therapist may be nice to have come to the hotel on Thursday night. I would for sure be interested after 5 days and 500ish miles...any others?
@Coach: Makes sense. Let us know your ETA and we'll make it happen. Today I'll contact Old Spaghetti Factory and confirm the reservations. Yes, would love to ride with you all on Sunday and will take you up on the ride back to Sac offer if possible. If not, I'll bike home. Thanks.
@Coach Rich: Any idea of what time you plan to leave the hotel on Sunday morning to start the ride?
For now I'm going to say 8:30a, with an 8a option for anyone who wants to leave a little early. The Tour gets a late start, at 11a, but it's a flat stage and they'll be flying. I'm going to pull us out at Pole Line Rd in Davis, at 93 miles. Time table says they'll be there between 2:12 and 3:07, which means we need to be there by about 1:30p. So 5-5.5hrs to ride 93mi.
...or I may make it an 8a start and just keep that for the week, to make it simple.
@Bob Nelson - I might be looking to go with your original offer of helping us get to your pool and get a swim in, Al says he needs some tanning time poolside while I do this, can you post details if possible to pull this off and if others are interested in joining, please reply.
@Scott: We can make it happen. Did you want to go straight to the pool from the airport? There is a $20 guest fee. The pool has 5 50m lanes and 4 25yd. There is also a restaurant and exercise room.

@ $20, I guess I won't be getting tanned, rested, and ready there.
@Al: Understandable. Christi just called the Sacramento YMCA which is about 2 miles from your hotel. They have 4 lanes of adult lap swim available from 2 - 5:30 for a $10 day pass. Their address is 2107 6th Street, Sacramento, CA 95818. 916-452-9622. But I would plan on it being very busy on a Saturday afternoon when the temps are in the mid-80s. I don't want to sound like a pool-snob, BUT for an extra $10, you will have a better / more relaxing experience in our opinion.
@Coach Rich: Reservations at Old Spaghetti Factory are confirmed for tomorrow night at 6:30. Called Mike's Bikes and confirmed that they will close at 6pm tomorrow. I called because I know a few of the bike shops in the area are changing their hours during the race so their employees can watch/volunteer at the race.

Ok, great, thanks. My cell is 626-203-3278 if you need to reach me tomorrow

LAX, last flight out, or no earlier than 8p, please. Thanks.
So Sat, May 16, 9:15 PM, LAX works, right?
Yep, perfect, thanks.
Hey Rich - will you be bringing up CO2 cartridges for those of us flying? Amazon sells 25 for $15, I guess we'd need both threaded and unthreaded?

Enjoy my home state, I miss it (badly, sometime)!
PS: the shirts look great.

It's all starting to come together!
Assembled 4 bikes yesterday, another 5 to go today. Some sweet hardware, I could easily retire on what will be on the bike racks for this tour!
Trent has totally skylined himself as the guy to watch for the sprints, with his trick Di2 sprinter switches almost hidden under bar tape
feel free to call 917-848-2335 or email sd@twgco.com
