  • @Kris - saw your note about retiring the Adamo. I have ridden on the John Cobb Mo' Flow for the last three years and its like Heaven. I literally went from crying  by the end of every ride to "did I even ride today?" in one ride. I love my Mo Flow!!! Just bought a second one for my road bike....

Missed you this weekend  -"hi" to all the gals I did meet, lots of fun and hard work.

  • Glad everyone made it back from camp safely. Bummed I missed it, I can't wait until September!

@Marianne, I hope you are on the mend!

@Becky, you have plenty of time to get back into the swing of things before your IM. Don't forget as you are training for your next half that your real "A" race is the IM. Keep your eye on the prize! Your Mojo might be better if you get off the trainer and go on some early morning rides! There is nothing like getting out of DC and riding out in the country to cure you.

    Things I love:
    1. S Caps
    2. Sport Legs
    3. Full length ZOOT recovery tights
    4. Infinit
    5. Power Bar Gel-Tangerine
    6. NUUN-lemon lime
    7. Newton running shoes and Newton socks
    8. Vita Coco 100% pure coconut water
    9. 5 hour energy
    10. Lara Bars
    11. A&D ointment
    12. Brave Soldier Friction Zone
    13. Finis Forearm Fulcrom paddles

    What are your favorite things?
  • 1. NUUN goji berry green tea
    2. reebok sneakers
    3. banana boat baby spray on sunscreen (wink, wink Kitima!)
    4. peanut butter sandwiches at 2:30 into a ride
  • Colleen, I wish I knew you were doing Muncie!  I was there, as sherpa and support, for my friend Debra, who did the race.  I was going to sign up but decided not to this year.  I volunteered my time while I was there.  I worked body marking first thing in the a.m., then went to the swim in, and handed out Gatorade.  After that, I was the woman in the road 500 feet from bike dismount, warning all bikers that it was coming up.  Since I was there from start to finish of bikes coming in, I hollered at you too!    I looked for EN tri or jersey tops, but didn't see any.  Good for you, finishing the race and slowing down during the run.  It was HOT out there!   Around 12:30, I changed into my swim suit and did a 20 min. swim, to get a little workout, and cool down!  I plan to race it next year.  It truly is a good race!

  • Becky and Kristen, hang in there! Do what is right for you and know that it is what it is supposed to be. Hope you get your mojo back and feel good about where you are.
IMOO Chicas, so glad you all had a great weekend! I still plan to volunteer at IMWI, so I can meet you and keep and eye on you! image Am thinking that WHEN IMLOU goes well, I will be fired up to sign up for IMWI for 2011.
Planning my Mom's 90th b-day party for this Sunday. Rescheduling my Race Rehearsal bike ride from this Sat. to July 24th, when I go down to Louisville to ride the entire course.
Hope all are doing well, and everyone be safe out there!
  • OK I though I was being lurker extraordinaire of late, but clearly I was still not lurking well enough. I got such a kick out of all the updates on FB from Moo Camp. You all seemed to be having such a great time! Race day is going to be awesome for all of you.

Kristen I'm proud of you for making the decision you did about IMFL. I can tell you from my own personal experience this year, that pushing through when it really isn't there isn't going to gain you anything. I hope you're feeling good about where you are now and that you're looking forward to Longhorn!

I recently made my final decision to not do my beloved 5430 Long Course (I am still resisting calling it "Boulder 70.3"). I just haven't been able to resume training after IMSG and the stupid oral surgery and then getting slammed with a mid-June cold. I've not been feeling great, really low on energy, and it just seemed insane to think I was going to get it together for this race and stay sane. With the little bit of riding and running (not what I would call training) that I have done (most of it without PM or Garmin) I was able to do a sprint on Father's Day and Boulder Peak (Olympic) this weekend. I had a blast this weekend at the Peak and am happy to end my 2010 tri season with a fun day out (notwithstanding my crappy run). I'm looking forward to doing some backpacking, MTB riding, and good road cycling climbs with DH for the rest of the summer, while getting back to some good-n-sweaty hot yoga during the week!

  • I'm soooooooo tired. That is all.
  • @Kate - thanks for the words of wisdom and your list of favorite things!  I just got a pair of Sir Isaac's...need to watch the video and start breaking them in.  I think I'm gonna have to wear them to warm up (a mile or so) then change into my other shoes... per the advice on the card in the box to start with 10 minutes per run for 2 weeks.   I'll have to see what I can do about morning rides off the drainer... usually once a week doesn't bother me - but the last few weeks the weather has been so horrendous it's been all drainer all the time.  It was great to get out Sunday for some fresh air!

My favorite things is a work in progress:

    1) hammer gel cappucino (have the new huckleberry flavor to try, am very optimistic)

    2) chapstick

    3) S! Caps

    4) fresh summer fruit (cherries and mangoes, notably)

    5) spinach, strawberry & avacado salad with chopped walnuts and goat cheese

    6) road ID

    7) peanut butter, banana, and chocolate milk post ride smoothie

    8) sweet potatoes with sauteed walnuts and almonds and cinnamon

work is busy... an insane deadline on an impossible question... but that's life.  better to be busy than bored.  missed my ride this morning, tried to sleep but big storms and couldn't shut the head.  Will ride tonight (2x20s - ugh)... will probably save the brick run til Thursday's ride since that's my telework day and I might even be able to get outside, weather permitting.

  • Hi Ladies!

Exhaling a bit here as life begins to settle down. Keith is doing remarkably well, and has actually amazed me. Two weeks ago there was risk of head injury fallout, blindness, and looming extensive facial reconstruction. Silver lining after silver lining appeared, and he is recovering beautifully. He looks great too. The swelling is coming down, and the bit of scarring on his brow will add character, I tell him. image What an enormous few weeks.

We will get to go to Maine for a bit, and I didn't think that would be possible. It will do his soul good to recover up there. We'll leave on Friday or Sat.

Kristin--there are other years, and IM will always be there. Seriously, if it's not fun, why do it? The training is NEVER fun, but when you know the day itself isn't enough to motivate, time to hang it up. Good call. Sounds 100% right, and good on you.

As for me, I'm taking it one day at a time and trying to put myself back together. The toll of fatigue this has put on me is--well, I don't even have the words. I'm moving forward with the training day by day. No big decisions yet one way or the other.

Gotta scoot--another doc appt. This time it's Cali to the vet for her annual check up. image Love to all of you!

  • @Linda - so wonderful to read that Keith is doing so well and to read that you are holding up. Day by day, one step at a time, is the only way to go. Glad you are taking the time to rest, you certainly need and deserve it. You are an amazingly strong and resilient woman, I am certainly drawing strength from you. Best wishes!
  • @Linda - so glad to hear Keith's recovery is going so well! We all thought about you a LOT over the weekend when we were together at the IMWI camp. Sending positive vibes for continued progress, relaxation, and ease.

As you can tell from Nemo's pics, we had a super fantastic time in Madison. It was amazingly cool to meet everyone in person. Looking forward to meeting more of you in September! We have such an awesome group of people, and it really did feel like I already knew the chicas that I met. Great friends. And thank you so much to the IMWI camp chicas for the thoughtful card and gift certificate to Uphill Grind! You so did not need to do that...it was my pleasure to play hostess when you came to my town! Looking forward to it again in a few months. I'll really enjoy the next trip to the coffee/bike shop. Let's see...smoothie, cookie, iced chai, oh and maybe even something for my bike! And I'll be sure to share with my buddy Jonnie D. He wanted me to tell you that he really enjoyed hanging out with you guys, too.

Anyone else doing the Door County triathlon this weekend? I'm registered for the half IM. Probably my last race of the season.

Hoping to get my CDA race report done soon...
  • Kristen: You've made the right decision. It's a hard decision to make, but you've got to be feeling really, really relieved and happy about it now. My DH has made the decision to quit road triathlon completely---he's so stinking overjoyed right now I almost want to strangle him on the way out the door to my long and lonely weekend rides. Just as Linda said, if the joy and reward of the race experience doesn't overcome the PITA of training it's not worth it. Besides, Longhorn is a really fun race.

Kris and Marianne: Hope you gals are healing up! We really missed you this weekend. I threw a tantrum because I have to wait until Sept to meet you gals.

Linda: What a whirlwind (more like shit storm actually) 2 weeks you've had! Keith's recovery has been remarkable. Taking it day by day is really how we should all be living---can't change or live in the past or future.

Back to work for me today! Wah!
EN Cowgirl camp was fantastic! Great weather, great riding, GREAT GREAT GREAT girlfriends---two of whom (Beth, Michele M!) found us some WAY yummy food. So on the top of the list for the tri things I love:
    1. EN Chicas
    2. Sunscreen...specifically Neutrogena spf 70 and higher. Not the froo-froo natural zinc spf 30 safe for your skin crap that left me with a wicked sunburn on the small of my back this weekend, but the stuff with the toxic chemicals that will allegedly make me grow a third head if I put it on my skin and is supposedly no good above spf 30. I'll take a third head growing from my skin over sunburn and skin cancer. image
    3. S! caps
    4. Ice baths
    5. Smith Pivlock sunglasses---no rims so I can see when in aero.
    6. Tirrenzo Bozzone's gorgeous hair. image My one shallow thing about guys: HAIR. Yeah, yeah, yeah...I want a man who is reliable, debt-free, solvent, and not overly attached to his mother blahblahblah. But if his FTP is north of 300 and his head is full of luscious locks...be still be beating heart!
  • So good to hear from you Linda!
  • good to hear from you Linda. *see IPOD listing of songs!

ran today and no knee swelling! will ride tomorrow and see? m
  • oh yeah top ten

    2. 1.5 lb ankle weights, leg lifts and even put on wrists for arms, and on the go
    3. Kindergarten nap mat that I use as a yoga mat, it folds up and I put a towel over it
    4. Headsweats visor, normally an IM one,

    • Aveda lip tint (with SPF 15)
  • Mine:

    10. My Woodley Gardens Swim Team towel that I use in Transition and still have from my young age group swimmer days

    9. Swimming in the Boulder Res during a race and catching a glimpse of the Flatirons against the blue sky - always makes me smile

    8. My Oomph Vigor Compression Shorts

    7. Not getting flats in races

    6. Evanesence's "Wake me Up" song...cuz it does just that on those drag-my-butt-outta bed mornings

    5. My post Ironman Guinness tradition (DH even found me one in Utah!)

    4. THE FINISH LINE!

    3. My ART provider - Dr. Michelle Clark

    2. Recovery days!

    1. This amazing group of women in da Haus that I feel so connected to but whom I've NEVER MET!

  • Hi ladies. Still oh, so tired. Or, I have entered the state of Ironman neandethalism that makes compound sentences hard until after Ironman.

The best thing about today? Moo Jo got a mail order man -- Moose Man from Becky. (Thank you! Thank you!). I'll post pics soon. But I let them have lots of serious alone time to get to know each other today.

    Top Ten Things I like:

    1. Don Draper

    2. The skirt sports rash guard top I'm wearing now. Put on after swimming -- no wet outline from sports bra. Voila! I am actually descent in public.

    3. Dash the Kestrel.

    4. The giant bowl of green beans, fava beans, and tofu I am eating now.

    5. The pink chicas rule visor.

    6. A really beautiful apartment that is making me comtemplate the purchase of real estate.

    7. The crazy homeless dude who declared me Captain Gorgeous today.

    8. Neutrogena sunblock.

    9. Will, my bodywork dude. and Dr. Dever my chiropractor.

    10. Blue Jelly Belly sport beans.

  • I love the top ten lists... I'm taking notes so I can try new gear, etc!  I can't wait to get my chicas visor (thanks to Tracy for grabbing it and mailing it to me)!

@Beth, I mean "Captain Gorgeous," glad Moo Jo got her man (and they will have lots of time to get acquainted)!  I was looking for a buffalo but didn't see one... and since I actually did see a baby moose and his/her mom on a hike (Dan got a great pic of the baby... hopefully he'll post on FB soon), I thought the mooseman was fitting for a WY gal such as yourself.  Thank you for letting me crash in your pain cave!

@primal eaters - doing pretty well this week back on the wagon... what I found super interesting.  When I got home last night before hopping on the drainer (Tstorms prevented an outdoor ride) I grabbed a Luna morning bar.  pretty standard for my pre-morning workouts (which I haven't done in a while... so I haven't had one in a while).  It tasted terrible... I used to really like them now I just felt like I was eating chemicals.  I guess that means I'm making progress.  But I wonder what kind of quick and easy carb can I do now before rides/runs to top off the tank?  I guess a gel or something...

I'll probably ride again tonight since tomorrow is my telework day and the chances of me actually running early are better (I've been getting up at 6... early for work but not early enough to work out... hoping to scale that down so I'll be acclimated to 5am wake ups by the time things get hairy for IM training).  This is my last week back in OS, next week I jump into week 7 of HIM for 5 weeks to prep for Timberman then week 1 or 2 (of the 12 week) IM plan.  Feeling a bit more motivated... but November is so.far.away!

  • @Becky - You are welcome. And any of you are welcome to crash in my pain cave anytime. Soon, I should even have a proper couch!

On eating Paleo -- I've actually spit things out I usually like. Most cookies taste weird. I ate all the delicous, tiny plums out of work's fruit basket yesterday. Way tastier.

Colleen, I wish I knew you were doing Muncie!

Barbara, thanks for being there.  The volunteers were awesome!  I was wearing my Chicago tri club jersey rather than an EN singlet.  Here's a picture of me right before the finish.  Note the two-feet-on-the-ground running style!

  • Nicely done on a hot day Colleen! And it seems I sport that running style in almost all my raceday pics. Even 5K races! I swear, in my head, I'm running like Deena Kaster!
  • Thank you, friends, for all the support re: pulling out of IMFL. Kitima, you are right: I feel ridiculously happy and light, as if a giant weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I'm looking forward to doing Longhorn with my sister and, hopefully, kicking her butt! =) Little sister is a running fool, though.

Linda, great to hear from you! So glad to hear that Keith is doing well. Enjoy that vacation!

A few things I am loving right now, in no particular order except #1:

    1) All of the EN chicas: you have all enriched my life and I would love to meet you all someday
    2) The Corpse Flower (Houston is going nuts over this crazy huge tropical flower that should bloom anyday, and, when it does, it smells like rotting flesh. Yum. The flower's name is Lois, she is 4 feet tall, she has her own Twitter account, a live webcam, and the museum is open 24/7 right now so everyone can see her).
    3) Sneaking away at lunch to swim on a hot summer day
    4) Chocolate fudge brownie ice cream from The Chocolate Bar
    5) Concentrated Infinit - call me crazy, but I like the taste of a 3 hour bottle
    6) Second on the ice baths
    7) Leigh's self massage techniques - I try to use the foam roller and stretch every day now
    8) No IM= a little more vacation time. T and I may get to have a long weekend in Colorado yet!
    9) My new car
    10) The paleo shredded apple and carrot salad - with raisins post workout, or with chopped walnuts for a snack. So yummy!
  • Forgot to post my list.

    1. Lipstick. Before, during, and after races. (Truthfully, I have never put it on during, but hmmmm--IM is long enough to warrant that thought... image)

    2. Being at race weight

    3. S-caps fo' schizzle

    4. Speedfill fo' double schizzle

    5. Sleeping 10 hours

    6. My Kuota tri bike

    7. A clean desk; neat house

    8. Doing a workout, giving it my best shot, and having a good day

    9. Every single one of you

    10. Chocolate cake with white frosting--may that be my last meal

    11. Being 52. Seriously, I love being in my 50s.

    12 Cliff Shot Blox

    13  Smoothies--morning, noon and night

    14. Swimming--espcially outside in my summer pool and in Walden Pond

    15. Cali

  • RE: The LIST. Is this 10 tri related items, or just 10 things we lurrve?

  • @Gina the list can be whatever you want. I just thought it was a fun idea and I am really enjoying reading them. Fun way to get to know everyone and I am sure we are all finding new things to try! I am taking notes, ha ha. Going to try a new flavor of NUUN, Becky's lunch salad, Aveda lip tint so far to name a few. @Linda I second the chocolate cake, double yum!

Me too! Got a tube of Brave Soldier on order b/c of this. image I HAVE to find a better lube for the bike shorts. Gonna try Nunn too--never have.

I have not any saddle soreness issues in 2 years, BUT for some reason in Madison, I was miserable. Beth let me use some of this:

Pleasantly effervescent and cooling. It saved my day on Saturday!!

  • THE LIST:

    in no particular order...

    1) eating "just picked" vegetables from the garden

    2) falling asleep reading

    3) breaking into that first sweat while running

    4) remembering anything about my Dad

    5) the aroma of freshly turned earth

    6) the first sip of a cold beer

    7) the friendships I have made here

    8) my life with Susanna

    9) singing in the car

    10) rubbing my dog's ears

  • I love these lists!!!  (great idea Kate) It kind of reminds me of the 20 facts (or whatever) that was big on Facebook a year or two ago (I did that, if any of you want to check that out).  Hmm... maybe I'll copy and paste that.  Anyway,  I don't think I hit 10, so I'm gonna add a few more:

*the smell of freshly cut grass - love walking outside to that smell - especially after a long winter, reminds me of spring.

*any ice cream that has a fudge swirl  (at least after this primal experiment I hope I still love ice cream)

*french fries (with garlic and parmesan cheese is an extra bonus)

(and Linda, I love the opposite cake - yellow with chocolate frosting)

@Beth - can't wait to see pics of Moo Jo and Moose Man, hope they hit it off!

@Kate - the dressing I like on the spinach and strawberry salad isn't paleo friendly, but it's darn good:  equal parts sugar and olive oil (for 1 person, I use 1 Tbsp of each); 1/2 part white wine vinegar (1/2 Tbsp for just me); paprika, poppy seeds, sesame seeds to taste.  Yummy!  I had it last night post ride with a sweet potato and some chicken.  It's heaven... that's what I save til the end to have the last bite of!  Let me know if you like it!

(I've notice in other posts that folks are single spaced - whenever I hit return I automatically get 2 spaces...)
