I haven't had a chance to get to the pool yet and I'll probably have to use Mapquest to find it, been so long . And the RBAC is ~$15 per swim, can't justify monthly....new suit is about $25, goggles for ~$15, and I'd need to put gas in my truck to make it there, and the water might be cold and I don't have a tan so I might blind someone, and the dog ate my homework, and, and....

Rich, I thought I saw somewhere that you were a former distance (500/1000/1650) swimmer .... this reminds me of just about every 50 guy I knew way back in the day.

  • Have this tee'd up for tomorrow morning and will record in spreadsheet

Reporter: "Clubber Lang, any predictions for the fight?"

    Clubber Lang: "Pain"

Last year PR was 16:01 (yards), if I hit 17:00 tomorrow I'll be ecstatic. Anything over 18:00 and I might cry... a little.
  • Despite feeling as coordinated as I do on the dance floor, turned in a 17:16 1000y TT this morning for just a shade under a 1:44/100y pace. The only comp I have is a 500 yard swim at a 1:45/100y pace mid-March last year (after having already been in the pool for a month after a break from swimming 3X/week Oct/Nov/Dec!). So, I'll take it. PR last year was 16:01 in late May.

I did read the swim eBook beforehand and tried to think about the various high elbow/strong pull imagery, good body line, etc. in there. I also think (know) my overall fitness is dramatically better than this time last year and I'm about 7lbs lighter.

My form went to hell in a handbasket at about the 300 yard mark (1:48 split) after starting out too hard (1:35) of course, but pulled it somewhat together after that with all splits in the 1:43 - 1:46 range. I counted a few times and swim golf was high 70s for the last 600.

Don't think it will take me too long to pull it back together and... Maybe... Get faster than last year? Now wouldn't that be something.

    Updating spreadhseet now...
  • i am going to get the swim done this afternoon, but wanted to know what 'all pull' means?  does that mean you guys used a buoy between your legs or just didn't use them for any significant propulsion?

    thanks, gh

  • I used a pull buoy, but no paddles, no band. A lot easier than kicking with those dead legs of mine!

    ---Ann.
  • Well the Swimsuit Grab Bag came in the mail today. So it looks like I'm on for Monday. I better check to be sure the pool is still open for lap swim in the morning huh?
  • Wow, I havent been on the forum in a while and look at all the stuff Ive been missing. I already swam a faster HIM time than last year, but I will see what I can do at 1000 today. I guess Im cheating a bit since Ive already started swimming in transition. As for the rest of the year, been about 2-3 a month. You know, got to keep the pool ladies happy.

  • ok, done and added myself to the list.  1000yards in 17:59.71; even splits 9min and 8:59min per 500yrds; pace 1:47/100yards.

have not done a work out swim since IMAZ 2010 November.  the pace for the IMAZ  swim in yards was 1:54/100yards.

fastest pace ever recorde for me at 1000yards in the same pool, but different speedo, was in feb 2010 @ 1:42/100yards and i was swimming often in those days.

hopefully, once i get started again, i can make a big jump.  i sure as hell am not getting significantly slower by not swimming.

  • Alright,

So, swam a few relaxation swims during the out season and one form clinic. 1000 yards at 17:01. Actually one second faster than my fastest time last year in the same pool. So...

  • I did the swim time trial Friday night. Result: 16:57 for 1000 yards. Pretty happy with that. Have to admit, though, I cheated! I read the Swim eBook and spent 40 minutes doing drills before the test. I definitely learned a few things from the book and the drills. I've been doing Masters through NOS, but not obsessively. For the past month I've only swum once/week. With St. Croix coming up soon, this week I started with getting in the pool 3x/week.

Best swim golf was 88.  About 44 seconds, and 22 strokes/25 yards.  Looking forward to improving that.  I swam fist drill about 40 minutes afterwards trying to figure out a good catch!  Lots of room for improvement in my technique I think.  Sticking with no more than 3x/week though because of ROI!

  • Greg- you are a nut!
  • I've had 4 swim sessions, one of which was the failed TT and can honestly say that I'm feeling much more comfortable in the water. My limiter is still my upper body muscles, but this has been getting progressively better. I've been able to increase the amount of time and made it through the position progression completely today. Man, shoulders were sore on the warm ups though. I'm going to give the TT another try this coming week to see if I can actually make it the whole 1000.
  • First of all, where are the rest of the slow swimmers?  Looking at that spreadsheet was downright depressing!  Here was my result- no laughing or giggling or I'll come and kick your ass!

Background:   My time at IMWI was 1:23:29 or 2:10/100m (wetsuit, mass start, lots of benefits, kinda swim).   My last 1000TT was in April of last year after doing about a month or so of swimming 2x per week of mostly drills and a few short ladder sets (I was ramping up for an early season HIM).  My time for that TT was 22:46 or 2:17/100m.

Preparation for this test:  I haven't been in the water to swim since IMWI in September (except for one short "just get wet" event when I realized I couldn't swim a lap without flashing everyone- so I don't count that one).   I bought a new suit, put it on, swam 100meters before the test to "warm up".  Stretched my arms on the side of the pool, and hit "Start".

Test results:  23:26 for 1000 meters or 2:21/100.  That's 40 seconds slower than roughly the same time last year.  I approached this TT much the same way as I did the test last April- not trying to kill myself, just trying to see where I was.   I'd bet if I swam 2x per week for the next month and tested again in April I'll be right back to the same place again.

  • Just hold Nemo. I bet I can beat your time, meaning slower swimmer than you. Not ready to do the TT yet, but once I do I will send you a PM and you will see that there are other slllloooowwwer swimmers on this team than you :-). Love your visuals, especially the naked bum. 2 cute.

One other thing - I see posting in yards. My pool is a 50meter pool. Okay to post in meters?

  • @Nemo: Pics or it didnt happen!

  • Post away..all...and slow is relative!!!

Well, reality is that it was a naked boob I was flashing, but there are no EN Smileys for that one

Yeah- it's ok to post in meters- I did!

  • I am so happy to be part of Team EN. I am in Week 8 of JOS, so all testing this week, and the results have been amazing (to me)! Posted those results elsewhere, but thought-why not add a swim test? So, I did a 1000TT and my pace was 1:54!! By comparison, my last race pace was during an HIM in '09-a pace of 1:56. I was in top condition and 15 lbs less than I am right now. Let's not forget my 3rd baby (withiin 5 years) just turned 7 months old yesterday. I have been in JOS for 8 weeks. I am not pushing myself too hard, this work just freaking works. I feel so good!!!!! I've also lost 15 pounds of the pregnancy weight that I gained. It just feels so good. I can only hope for continued strides, even if the gains aren't always so large in the future!!!

  • Certainly not an all out TT by any means but did a 1000 yards straight in the middle of masters tonight in 16:20.   I will take it.  Right now I am as fast in the water as I have ever been.  Averaging one swim a week this year thus far.

  • Ok so had time today to give the TT a whirl.  Only truly been swimming since last season.  My last swim was the Racine 70.3, July 18th 2010.  I swam a 39:19 in Lake Michigan with a wet suit obviously.  That is my PR.  I have not been in the pool since.

Today jumped in and did about 150m warm up, then the 1000m TT.  finished in 20:42.  I am a mostly pull guy.  I use a small kick to rotate my hips, but that is it.  I am a 2min/100 guy usually.  So I am not upset at all with the results.

  • So I went and banged out the TT today. 20:31 which is 2:25 FASTER than last summer. I haven't done any "volume" swimming since CDA last year, only stroke work in an endless pool with my coach. Overall, very pleased. I should hopefully see some PR's this summer.

True to form, the EN way of training works!

  • I swam a few times back in Jan, then had a strange injury that took me out of the pool again. I've had about half a dozen swims since I got back in teh pool. Nothing longer than 45 minutes. Just getting in and doing a little drill warmup and some moderately hard swimming (like 300s).

    Two nice milestones today:

84 swim golf score, down from 91 last week (wearing my drag suit both times)
5:00 300 pull today, again with the drag suit. Not racing, just going reasonably hard.

Again, not great, but great improvement in only a little while. I'm looking forward to getting back to my best in the next couple months.

Not up to my last race ironman pace yet, but probably good enough for now.

  • Swam today after yesterday's 20 mile run. Did another 1k pull and decided at 600 yds down that I would make a TT out of it, until then had been cruising along. Ended up 6 seconds faster after just noodling along...might have to try another real go at this in a week to see what I can put up!

    3/1/11: 14:48
    3/14/11 -- 14:42
  • Ok, so finally dragged myself to the pool today for the first swim since my October Ironman.

Did the 1000m in 19:19 - without going all out - just getting used to the water :-)

Looking through WKO from last year, the best comparison I have are the following:

    September 10:
    500 meter in 10.19 and
800 meter in 17.04 (same pool as today - oval/circular, so no stops/turns during the swim)

    August 10:
    1000 meters in 22.13 !! (50 meter pool)

I also have a 3.8k swim in the oval pool in approx 1.15.00 from september 10

So, I'm definately not slower than last year :-)
  • Hi, I'm a snail. Have swam about 5 times (all lessons) since my last race at the end of october. My time today was 25:36. So tons of room for improvement! I swam around 40 mins for my olympic in october.
  • Posted on the main board friday, thought I'd add it officially today. First swim in ~8 months...1000 TT = 17:35
  • ok, so i went back and swam all pull (with a pull buoy) today and whittled it down to 23:16 from 25:36. Not a huge jump, but can any of you fast swimmers give your take on that. does it indicate that it's mainly a body position problem, or is it that my pull is just really weak?
  • OK, did the 1000 TT in 20:10 -- first swim outside a race in almost two years. Gotta start somewhere, eh? Gonna focus on mechanics for the next 6 weeks before A race #1.

Melissa, that's a BIG time drop! It probably indicates that your kick is doing more harm then good. I wrote something in a post on Slowtwitch about this last week, I'll cut and paste it into a thread here.
