30 Runs in 30 Days

I'm going to be doing the Nov OS this yr and wanted to do something to give my run training a little turbo boost.  I created a spreadsheet to keep myself accountable and I'm wondering if any of you would like to join me!

docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc

Here Are the Rules:

1) Commit to running 30 times in 30 days

2) Add yourself to the spreadsheet

3) Record your starting 5k vDot

4) Record the mileage of each of your runs (use 2 cells if you run 2x in the same day)

5) Record your ending vDot anytime throughout the month you happen to do a 5k test

This is less about a specific run plan and more about getting in some run frequency, staying accountable, and improving our run speed and durability.

Who's with me?

  • Here's a thread on the background of this with lots of great run info if you're interested... http://members.endurancenation.us/tabid/101/aft/7122/Default.aspx
  • IN!

But not sure when I'm going to start it. Planning to take Riley for a short spin today, my first run since IMWI, but I'm doing some pretty serious off-road vacationing beginning Oct 2. I may be able to commit to running ~30' every morning from the hotel, to work off the road food and let it warm up a bit.

Anyway, I plan to be the Forest Gump of Monrovia this winter so the more running the better!

  • I'm in! I SO need this. My run BLOWS. image
  • Now that I am doing the Hot Chocolate 15K on Nov5 why not. I think I am better off not having any official downtime...

I assume 30' is the minimum for it to be "official"?

  • As th one who challenged JW to this I'm obviously in. Ran a half last Sunday and am on day 4 in a row.

@Jeff as for rules, I know 30' is gonna be tough for me at times. I'm saying now that my minimum is gonna be 20' w/ 6-8 strides. It won't be often I will do that, but maybe once a week out of necessity.

@JW, great work setting this up!
  • I imagined that the rules would be extremely loose... I plan on counting a run if it is a proper run where I actually put workout gear on and then do at least 1 mile. My first run will be tomorrow when I do the 10k at the end of a local OLY triathlon.
  • @Tucker - I am with you on further review. If I do 1 mile w/up and then 4x800 @ 5k pace as a just get it done run that wouldn't get me to 30'. Perhaps the "rule" could be no more than 1 run a week < 30' (as you suggest)...

Won't start this until Monday unless the rain gets bad and I don't ride a Century tomorrow.
  • Can't resist a challenge....I'm in. Might help me get back on track for my annual running of the MDI marathon (10/16).

My mojo has been dwindling these past few weeks. I've been trying to keep my training up but it has been a struggle. I really dont want to miss MDI - it was my first.... 8 years ago and I have run it every year since. So, hell yeah.... I am in for sure!
  • I'm in. I can use all the motivation I can get lately.
  • I'm so in! Starting the Nov OS and want to put a focus on running this year. Managed two short runs this week - first after IMWI. I'll kick it off tomorrow with a 5K trail run at the end of the last sprint of the year (and it best not be a 30' run). Thanks for getting this going!
  • Can't let my local NJ Peeps get too far ahead of me ...so I'm in.image
Was already running 5x week leading to LBI 18miler on 10/9. SO I may take 10/10 off....just saying...
Did same half mary as Tucker last weeken - good day.
So I started the 30 days today with a nice 11.35 miles at easy pace (1:37ish) in the middle of the day humidity.
Let me know what 5k days you NJ guys may do as a vDot test - see if I can make one.
Thanks for getting this going guys...
  • after a few weeks off now post IMLOU my wife says to be a few days ago: "hmmmm, you're starting to fill out again." ummmm, great. thanks baby. needless to say, i'm in. thx for setting this up withrow.
  • NJ folks, there are 2 5k races I have found on October 23 which is a month away. The Colonial Challenge in Morris Twp and the St Patricks in Chatham. Neither is especially flat but hey, its a race.
  • man, i need this. I'm in and hopefully starting today.
  • I just added my name. I am coming back from a bad right calf tear so I am looking to build consistency over intensity. I estimated my VDOT from races earlier this summer minus a point. Not sure if I will be ready to test at the end of the 30-days or not. The rehab is going well, but things start to twinge if I go faster than an 8-minute mile still. Nevertheless, I couldn't even run 1-mile a month ago and am up to 30-miles this last week so definitely making progress.
  •  I am in - was thinking of doing 40 runs in 40 days leading up to Nov outseason, so this is a treat .  I plan to hold some fitness, work on form, and with the nice days winding down and still wanting to ride outside - do some bricks.  I hate bricks.  Run number 4 tonight on the dreadmill in front of some football.

  • In! My ragnar ultra plan has me doing it anyway, so I'm happy to have you all for runner company!

  • I'm in!!Will start with 5 K trail run at the end of sprint tri from yesterday. Not exactly a run test but somewhere to start.
  • Is this OK to attempt with a 1/2 marathon in 3 weeks?
  • @ Kim - is this an "A" race for your? If so, sticking to your regular training will likely get you better results.

I've got a full marathon in 3 weeks... but for me it is just a fun run with no expectations. I think the hard part will be getting the Monday after run in.....

  • I'm just on the recovery bandwagon. After 4+ month of no running, my vDot is probably negative. image Any problems with me jumping in just to push myself to actual do something 30 days in a row?
  • @ Dan - with a negative vDot, you will win the 'most improved' award! Welcome aboard!
  • I'm in for sure, got a little post-race/holiday excess to loose before Nov OS. Been running a bit already and been starting to enjoy it again, especially running without worrying about zones, intervals, cadences etc - just run Forest run! This challenge is just what I need to stay consistent and keep myself accountable, thanks guys!!!
  • Oh yeah, I'm in. Funny as I was planning on doing this too based on our other thread!
  •  Recovering from my first HIM last Saturday, but I'm in . . . think I'll start this coming Saturday.

  • I'm trying to follow the Daniels plan and was deciding between Red or Blue. I chose Blue and yesterdays 400 repeats at R pace just made me realize how long it's been since I've run that hard. Those used to be really easy for me, while I struggled with even 1 hour stuff at EP. I can say that the pendulum has swung and I am no longer the sprinter I once was---ouch, lung busting!!!
  • Love the negative VDOT == That's almost as much fun as calculating VDOT from my three y.o. nephew, who ran his first 5k in 52 minutes. You totally have to have a higher VDOT than the three year-old

Oh, those 400 repeats. I love them. Does your plan have nasty things, like an 800 repeat at the end? Those kill me.

  • @ Beth- I'm not looking that far ahead---one run at a time. I used to love the track repeats, but I'm convinced that the IM plan this year replaced my years of basketball training sprints and is trying to convert me to a runner. As much as I was dying, I'm motivated to get that back and hope it makes me a better overall runner.
  • In!

2012 is the year of the run. I plan to start Oct 5th (ish) prior to a Nov OS Start.
  • I'm in. I've been lazy the past month or so. V-Dot test worst ever and weight way up. Gotta start somewhere and that much more room for improvement!
