I had good news/ bad news today. My knee acted up a week ago in my long bike ride and I ignored it. The "first" run of this challenge for me was my fun OLY this weekend and my knee got stiff throughout the day afterwards. Thought I would go easy and "run it out" on Monday, but that only made it worse and I couldn't walk at work. Long story long, I expected the worst and self-diagnosed it as a stress fracture of my patella after some google searching... Saw an ortho today and had x-rays (MRI coming soon). Looks like it's probably just bursitis on my patella. Got a knee brace and some strong anti-inflams and was instructed to ice regularly... No limitations on longer term training after I told the doc my recent history (IM in August, 100+ hilly bike ride last week and OLY on Sunday). I'm gonna need to take a few days off though until I get the MRI... Not exactly the way I wanted to start a challenge that I laid down, but better a month after my IM than a month before. I'll re-assess in a few days and if it feels better, I'll ease back into it and look forward to making it up with some punishing 2 a days in a couple of weeks. I'm still hopeful, and I'm just glad the diagnosis wasn't for 6 weeks off with no exercise!
I have my MRI scheduled for tonight. My knee was starting to feel a bit better with 2 days rest. Soooo, I ran 6.2 miles this morning and my knee hurts again. I made the executive decision that if I'm getting an MRI anyways, I at least wanted the hurting area to be inflamed when I got it. This was probably bad logic, but it made sense to me at the time so I went ahead and did it... The good news is that if this is nothing major and it feels better soon, that's 1 less 2-a-day I'll need to do later to get to 30!
Do over for me. I was plagued with The Horrible Flu and stood down. Nice six miler in by the Lake -- far enough away to see the crashing waves but not have them topple me over.
Had to miss my frirst run since before the challenge started. On Wed (9/21) I did my first deadmill-rehab run in an attempt to get past a recent calf issue. Not a real injury, just one of those nagging spasm things that come from too much intensity without the base to sustain it.
Well, things went well and as the days went on, I was feeling better and could get near normal pacing. Saturday came and brought on the challenge which I eagerly embraced. Runs went well on the DM and was feeling strong and had no lingering tightness or knots.
Last night was a pleasant evening... I was feeling strong so I went outside for a 6 mile run. All started good, slow and easy.... steady pacing. After the turn-around I started to increase my cadence ... things felt better. Running my normal all day pace now... Pick up the tempo some more - still good.... Past the last hill, 1.2 miles of downhill to home, pace faster, cadence quick..... then "Bing!" The spasm returned. Not full on cramp at first.... 10 strides later "BANG!" Full spas-mode and I have to walk home.......
Tonight I tried to get a few deadmill miles in but in just over a half mile of stupid slow and the spasm is back. Shut it down and call it a day.
Guess I got 1 to make up.... but seems there are a few others here that are not posting or are missing quite a few too. Hope all are ok and not suffering any injuries.
Oh man! Not running for 4 months extracts a terrible toll on your fitness. About the only positive thing I can say is that I managed to walk/run for 4 miles in a not too shameful fashion. +1 Team Me! My gait is all whack because of general weakness on the repair side combined with a lack of flexibility in the ankle. Still, I've drawn my line in the sand and hope to exceed it after 30 days of rehabbing my ankle.
Withrow, ignore email from me calling you out. Didn't know you were hurt. 12 days for me, only 8 on spreadsheet, and feeling pretty damn good about it. Gonna see how far I can take this into the OS.
managed a slow 4 miler on the DM this AM... but took me a mile of walking before I felt my calf would tollerate the running. All good so far... maybe I can get a few in later on.....
Grrr ... missed Friday and Saturday ... felt like shin splints coming on ... guess those oh so cute red high heels I wore on Thursday have to go to Goodwill. Back to the Clarks - not complaining - I'd rather be running that styling (when did that happen? somewhere on the way to IMWI)!
Good work all. It appears that the short workouts, done consistently, really add up. I might start getting back to a longish run next week. I've got one day to make up.
So I did 2 easy on the DM last night, but stopped before the knee got too bad. Did 3.1 on the DM this morning and knee hurt a bit, but not too bad. Hit the whirlpool after this morning's run and my knee didn't hurt much at all today at work. I still haven't gotten the results from the MRI yet, but the massive doses of prescription strength anti-inflams appear to be helping. If I'm lucky, tomorrow will be another decent day and I'll start rolling...
@Tucker, F-off anyways... I'm coming for you brotha...
Okay, filled in one hole today with a double of 7 miles in the AM and 3 this PM. Still behind one day though. Going to shoot to make it up on Saturday.
@John, what's up with that? Don't run yourself into the ground. Take it easy. Once you are better we can get together for a run. Day 14 run of 5 for me today. Just punched the clock yesterday with 1 but it started raining and didn't have a rain coat on my daughter so I have an excuse.
Five-miler for me today and the return to speed/ftp work after weeks of base-building. 4 x 5 minutes of HARD, as Jack Daniels obviously does not kid around about return to speed time. I blew up a bit on the third interval, but got it back together and, thankfully, a nice fast girl appeared at the beginning of the fourth one and acted as a fantastic bunny. I'm not quite as fast as I was before, but I'm not far off, so I'm thinking VDOT's in good shape.
Run #12 in the past 13 days, 7 miles tonight. Still shuffling on the DM in rehab mode. Got a marathon in less then 2 weeks that I need to run. Doesnt have to be a fast run, just a steady fun run. The MDI marathon was my first race of any length - 8 years ago and I have run it every year since. So, I got to be healthy and durable enough to make it 8 in a row.
I have to say, I have never trained for a marathon like this, but then again... my normal training was getting kind of bumpy, lacking mojo. The worst part was in my lame way of trying to get the miles in I ended up running fewer but much too long runs.... hence the calf spasms......
Finally getting into a bit of a groove. Sunday night was 2 miles on the DM with some pain in the knee, Monday morning was 3.1mi on the DM with minor pain in the knee, Tuesday morning was 5mi on the DM with just a dull pain in the knee. This morning was 6.2mi on the DM with only a minor dull pain in the knee... I was actually able to speed it up a little bit each mile and was actually running with a 7-handle pace for the last mile. I've been doing core work after each run and hitting the hot tub immediately afterwards to let the strong jet hit me directly in the Patella. This seems unconventional to me, but it's working so far, so I'm not gonna change it.
@Tucker- It doesn't count as a run if you're simply running to the bus stop while holding hands with your 4yr old little girl who is splashing around in the rain puddles....

Oh Withrow, you make me laugh. On Mondays and Wednesday I run pushing my daughter so a little rain and I pulled the plug. Let me know when you heal up so we can go out for a run. Well a jog for me and a run for you
Today was 15 in a row for me. 4 miles pushing the kid. Speedwork tomorrow which should kill me. Kind of weird to just be running but hell, it gives me something to do.
Nice work all! Good to see some smack-talk going down as well. 9 runs in 9 days for me - had to get up early this morning to get a short run in before fly back home today. Been loving running on the beach in New Zealand, bummer now need to head back to the tropical heat but hopefully will be able to keep running everyday.
5 more for me this nice cool evening - felt great - but right calf got reaaallll tight. Stopped - walked last 2 miles, used the roller thingy for 20 minutes. We will see about tomorrow.....So far missed 1 day of 12 (due to work of all things)....still plan on 18 miler on Sunday ..hopefully..

We'll be here when you are ready.....
I'm in and started yesterday!

Keep up the good work gang!
5 days in a row and counting
trying to find my happy running place
Happy four in today. Oh, I can't wait until the cold virus of terrible leaves for good! It is cramping my running style.

10 easy miles for me on the DM tonight.... no problems but the calf still feels tight.

Nice work, crew. Especially with the doubles.

Tuesday is a bad run day apparently. It's the only week day that I missed both weeks!. Maybe a double today.
WTG all
8 days in a row and counting; it has been years since I have been this consistent in one sport.
