Suzanne, you know my story with all this. I think the OS has veered into a place that...well, I'm going to get in trouble around here if I say too much. I'm a slow recover-er, and it took me a month. All that work, and I started going backwards. The plans are a template, and I took them as gospel--again. I have to stop that. 20 weeks, IMO, is just too much without any time off to regroup--mentally if nothing else. Take two weeks if you need it. Get good and rested and recovered--and be sure you're so rested your chomping a the bit before jumping into IM training. I'm telling you that as real heartfelt advice. The EN training takes a ton out of you, and the intensity in the IM schedule is definitely high. RnP say not as high as the OS, but with extra volume and swim sets--it's pretty darn close IMO. You other ladies think so too?
Brick wall warning!!!!!! switch gears, take a 3 day break like Linda.. and come back.... good on the weight loss though. basically your legs should feel jumpy, you should be looking outside all the time, checking the flags for wind and the weather, and basically itchy and rearing to go.... treat yourself. we don't factor in Life Stress Score (LSS) but all of us have it in the background... so who knows what the brick wall is from?? but take our advice and stand down!!! (I was told this many times by Gina, Nemo and Linda!!!!) so I am speaking from experience here!!! smile......no niggly pains!!!! us women have a high tolerance for pain, possibly as prep for child bearing... very high pain tolerance right gals??? so niggly pains feel just like that... but it is okay to sound like a hypochondriac and stand down for the niggly pains!!!! you won't lose fitness in 3 days or whatever it takes, 2 weeks yes!!! find some fun stuff
Suzanne- When asked, definitely make it clear that you are well on your way in IM training. That you are working on your speed right now. That is how I explain it. I still get a glassy eyed "oh" in response. They have no idea what that means, but at least they stop asking.
AND STAND DOWN! Last year I went from the 16 week OS right into a 20 week IM plan. 4 weeks later I had no mojo and backed out of the iron race. Best decision I could have made. But obviously it would have been smarter to take a break after OS. I spent the summer doing sprint/Oly races and off road races for fun. Then in autumn, l walked away from S/B/R pretty much entirely. By the time Jan OS came around I was chomping at the bit to start and pretty much still feel that great. But I am managing it smarter this year (so far). When it snowed this week, I just skipped the run and did a fun DVD. Great mental break. Having been around EN for 2 years, I have moved into the realm of not testing and looking at my metrics to figure things out. I will take this Test week and make it a Rest week. Lose fitness? Not likely. Good mentally? You bet! And I have a 2 week scuba diving vacation after OS. Not a moment of S/B/R in site during that time. I am sure that I will come back so very ready to start my 12 week IM build.
Truly- if you don't stand down, you will not make it all the way to IM. Best of luck.
Oh, Suzanne. The brick wall. It is no fun. As a chica with a really high LSS score, I gave myself the February to do whatever I want workout-wise. After skipping out on three weeks of the OS from skiing, I thought I would be in a pretty dumb, hard place with my fitness, but I'm not. Near the end of this month, I'm thinking this migh have been the smartest decision I could've made for my training. I'm already starting to crave Thursday morning long runs and it is not nearly time for them yet. I'm operating on the theory that I week standing down won't kill you -- -and neither will a whole month in the OS. I want full and present mojo for all those April-September long weekend bike rides.
I got to hang out with Michele last night! EN chicas in real life? Awesome. I can't wait to see many of you in July. Michele should have pics to prove in happened.
Suzanne, I agree with all the other ladies. I love rest because when you come back your legs are all springy and the training is enjoyable. This EN stuff is intense. I take it as a template and modify big time. Just trying to stay consistent.
On that note, I'd like to share some of my running success today. I have been enjoying training with my friends here for their upcoming marathon. The runs have been quality. Long Thurs run with tempo and longer Sun with tempo. Each month I have run a wee bit stronger. In Dec ran avg 8:00 for long runs, Jan around 7:45 and TODAY ran 14 miles in 7:30 avg. Holy Crap!! All diligent enjoyable training with friends. I am so stoked about today's run. I thought they were trying to kill me at mile 11 and mile 13 when we threw down 6:30 miles. Yowza!!
Onward to IMSG. So glad all of this is to gets to run 9's in the race. Kinda funny but it works:-)
Suzanne- I can't say much more than what has already been said! The value of this forum sometimes is exactly this kind of advice- and the "approval" to stand down and take a break (not that you really NEED approval, but sometimes it's nice to hear it anyway).
Carrie- you ROCK! I can't believe IMSG is so close, I get goose bumps reading your posts!
Beth & Michele- I'm looking forward to seeing your pics! EN real life meet-ups are so fun!
It is so good to be home! So much to catch up on! I have missed you all! Got into Baltimore about 2:30 this am. Kind of tired today. Stomach is doing better. The anesthesiologist I worked with on 2nd week did some accupuncture on me last saturday, and sunday I was really hungry . Just like an IM, it was rewarding, but there were a few dark moments I needed to pull myself through, but got it done. I am going to work on a report, but not having my computer back yet will slow things down. Right now, i'm in the library.
The event of week 2 was a gunshot wound to the chest and jaw ( he walked into triage, with a friend who promptly disappeared) kind of like being in baltimore) we got him stabilized, but didn't have the means for definitive care- ie a ventilator or ICU staff. Even though we are a trauma team, we are there more for followup/ orthopdedic and wound care. We transfered the pt to U of Miami in the back of an SUV with my self, a surgeon and critical care nurse. We were all like pretzels (sp). It took over an hr to get to the other hospital. We had to leave our ICU nurse behind since they didn't have enough staff. It was probably the most stressful event- not because of care, but safety issues. The phone we had, we left with the iCU RN staying with pt ( Even with that, we were having difficulties calling out on it before we left.) The surgeon & I disagreed with were we should go- she said they would expect us to go back to camp, I said they were waiting for us at hospital. I was there a week already, she was there 2 days; but I could not win the argument. They did not send us with one our "usual Catholic Relief Service (CRS) driver" but a driver that spoke only creole, we had no phone.......she did not understand my concern for safety. We got back to school- what a shock, our team was not there! In the end, everyone was safe, but still kind of get upset when thinking about it or telling the story. I know I need to let it go, as we are all safe, but puts a knot in my stomach. I plan to talk to my chief CRNA about it this week to hopefully avoid future issues. The pt, last I heard will make it. Perhaps the next day, the surgeon had more appreciation for safety and travelling as a group in convoy. It was Tuesday, Mardi Gras. As we were gathering up for afternoon meeting, our lead driver Jeau -bere (sp) ( a former driver/ body guard for embassy & in charge of our safety) starting snaping his fingers and waving at us " We must leave now, there is danger" He apparently heard Gun shots in the area. Prior to that, the driving was fast and unbelievable, well that day, OMG! When I pull my report together, hoping to get a copy of the videos that are out there on driving in haiti that people on my team took. Stay tuned for more on Tracy's adventures in Haiti.......
On a positive note, with cortisone shot a complete rest, no orthotics, my knee is feeling pretty Darn good May ask my ART guy if I can ty very Ez running at at slow progression
Happy Belated Birthday Nemo!
Welcome Linda "shrink"
Olivia- hang in there, sorry to hear about your recent troubles. Hope they get to the bottom of it soon. Sounds like you are on the right path. Big hug your way
Carrie Chavez- great job on the running/pacing. Hope you get your IM housing worked out. Finally got mine situated for Lake placid
Beth, glad to hear you are getting settled. Marianne, you leave for trip soon? have a great time, and be safe
Sorry for leaving anyone out. Library is closing soon. need to take my time and go through all thepages and catch up on what is going on
I got to hang out with Michele last night! EN chicas in real life? Awesome. I can't wait to see many of you in July. Michele should have pics to prove in happened.
OMG, such an awesome evening! I am SO looking forward to July (or sooner, if anyone from nearby is planning to come to Madison to ride the course before then). I'm waiting for my other friend to send me the pics she took with her camera...will post them as soon as I get them!
Suzanne - as usual so many smart girls have already chimed in with their excellent advice. I got nuthin' further. Listen to your body, and keep us posted as you bring yourself back away from the OS ledge.
TRACY YOU ARE BACK!!!! welcome home. and thanks for your hard work in volunteering in Haiti!!! wow what a first great story to share with us!!! yes I leave on Saturday. but I have been told it is safe down there!!! wow on Haiti, blown away by your tales and I could feel goosebumps as I was reading!!!! can't wait for the next tale. good on no pain!!! I will hope for the same for me!! so cool for Michele and you Beth to meet!!! how exciting! coffee now.... toodles. m
Welcome Back Tracy, what a story. Thank you so much for your efforts in Haiti.Really humbling.
Olivia- How are you feeling??
Steve and I had our local Team End 2009 Awards party and 2010 kick off party last night. Steve and I hosted the "Team Chavez Tuesday AM Track" workout at 6 am for 4 years now. We have a great group that varies throughout the year based on their races. They surprised us by making us a book on shutterfly. I am attaching the link to it, I hope it works. They also all pooled their money and bought us a huge gift certificate to a Winery for dinner and One girl gave us a coupon for Madisitting( she'll watch Madison so we can go out to dinner). So freaking thoughtful. Humbling.
Welcome Home Tracy!!!! I can't wait to read more and see the pics. What a rewarding yet scary adventure! I'm so thankful there are folks like you in this world who have the skills, talent, and will to help in these times.
Carrie- I was able to see the pics- I just had to copy/paste the link into a browser. What a very sweet and thoughtful gift! It must be a very special group!
Gonna be a BEAUTIFUL day here! FINALLY! But it's a rest day for me. My TSB is -31 as of this morning and as much as I really want to get out there to ride, I know I need to rest and let my body absorb the work I did over the weekend. I might have to take an extra long lunch today and go for a walk on the beach!
Thanks for all of your words of support. The physical therapy I've been doing for the past three weeks is one major factor in crudding me up - no wonder RnP say to get out of the weight room! It's just too much to spend an hour on squats and lunges and leg lifts and then wake up less than 24 hours later and crank out Z4 intervals. And it's coming at the stage in the OS that is the most damaging to my body - all that Z5 hammering really pushes me to the edge. At this point my main motivation for a stand down is injury prevention - I could care less about losing a smidge of fitness - and I'm really feeling very zen about the whole thing. I think I'll spend this week sending a video to Todd to work on my bike fit, tinkering with the bike, doing some core work, etc. Oh, and getting a crown put on a molar.
Tracy - so glad you are home safe and sound and that there are people like you in the world that do such great work!!! Happy that your knee feels better too
Loved your pic of the TT on FB Carrie! Looked like so much fun and sounds like you are running great!
I am back to work full time this week - 6 new dogs in for training, so I will have less time to spend surfing the forums Boy Scout banquet went well - especially considering I got there and found out I only had 3 working burners on the stove when I thought I would have 6! The boys came home with a good haul of belt loops, badges, prizes and trophies though so it's all good. Will have to sahre the "squid dog" story at some point when I have more time.
Sounds like Linda is bouncing back!!! Yay! I hope everyone else is feeling good - I am having rest week instead of test week.
I hear you on the PT, my lst one ws today... and yes all sorts of leg stuff for about 30-45'!! booty burn for me!! yowza... but up to 4lbsankle weights on leg lifts x 30... anyways I ran 3.5 without pain this morning!!! pretty excited about that and had 4 strides of 1/20 mile and they didn't hurt either..... will still stand down. weekly mileage has been about 12ish but I rode 115 last week and walked about 6.....so fingers crossed in little increments like .25 mile.. and no long runs either.... back home now and still about 38 and damp and cold out there, overcast so I am gonna knock out chores and last minute stuff for trip!!! I am still not eating processed sugary foods like pastries, poptarts, and the like but can't kick the Cheezits!!! lol. not sure if it is scientific but I am sold on it, I mean like I had some small valentines chocs that kids gave me but I haven't bought any..... didn't make brownies.. nothing... no weight loss but feel good about my decision.
So glad you are back Tracy! Thank you for going down there and giving your talents, time and energy. I'm sure you have a new appreciation for the environment that you usually work in. I'll look forward to hearing more. For now though be good to yourself and feel good about what you've done.
Marianne - Can't believe you're going this weekend! It will be an exciting, adventurous and rewarding time, I'm sure!!
Suzanne - what can I say? I've been where you are now. It ain't fun, but it is fixable. You're doing the right thing. Rest and disengage from the training a bit and let your body and soul return to themselves a bit. Here I am having missed most of last week's workouts (week 10 of race prep) and I'm glad that I didn't push those missed days. In fact,Tuesday and Friday were totally off. Granted that was somewhat by choice, and mostly by function of the fact that my body is doing wierd stuff and my mind is pre-occupied, but it was the right thing to do. You'll be back...and it will happen when it's time.
Carrie - I swear I want to come live with you guys for the rest of the time between now and IMSG. It'd be great for my training to get to go to your little track workouts and stuff! What a generous and thoughtful group of teammmates you've got there at FMRC. So cool.
Robin - have fun getting back in the swing with the doggies!! This is what you love!
I came through the weekend able to get through a decent long bike effort on Saturday and a not-quite-according to plan run. I had a few vision/balance issues during the attempt to run but found that they were not so bad if I just didn't push as much. So the HMP segment had to turn into an LRP segment. Sunday my goal was to try to get in as much of the missed Thursday long run as possible. It had to be on the treadmill due to the weekend long snow storm we were having. I decided to try going to the gym and running on the sweet Woodway treadmill there. I thought that might be better because I can see out the windows of the building and can constantly shift what I'm looking at, figured it might be better than at home where I'm forced to have only a very close horizon. Plus those treadmills are a dream. I got through the run!!! On my way home I had a few scary moments in the car where I felt really hot and felt that tingling at the base of my head, like I would pass out. I looked for places to pull off...but never needed it. (Thankfully...I know...scary and unsafe) After eating a load of food I took a really really long nap...and felt a lot better. So my new approach to trying to get to the start line in SG is to identify a minimum amount of the work that I will do each day, and if I can do all of the prescribed work I will, if it doesn't feel right, I won't. Looking forward to getting to ride outside on the course in St. George this weekend!! One day at a time...what will be will be.
Tracy- Welcome home! So gald you made it through everything safely. Do not discount the fact that you may need some EAP help. It is a traumatic situation, even if you were only there for the aftermath. Just read an article from an NP about the conditions, really tough. Glad to hear about the knee. Best of luck.
Suzanne- Glad you are taking the rest. I woke up today thinking "M/W/F I only need to get up in time to do my push ups and core work, otherwise I am SLEEPING!" Snow is on the way, so I might not be able to run this week. HHAHAHA - so sad (NOT). I love to run, but I am with you- be smart first.
Olivia- Very scary driving. Please be careful. Sounds like you are working on finding the line.
We are having a gorgeous day here in Massachusetts, just before the snow and rain for the rest of the week. Fine. Be safe!
Tracy, so good to hear from you! Glad you are back!
Suzanne, been feeling the same way the past few days. I was absolutely exhausted last week. I was sitting on the bed in my bike clothes and my husband walked in and said "you look really tired." Took off the bike clothes, put on pjs and took a nap. Then took this whole weekend off. Mom's bday last night...made choc. covered strawberries and ate 4 of them. And enjoyed every bite!
I leave on Saturday, will be in church in Guatemala on Sunday, Gina will try and remember you and your Dad.... okay I have had to break down and pick up Zaxby's chicken, and just devoured some..... changing into some PJs and getting comfy and looking up sizes of suitcases on Delta cuz have heard diff stuff. tired. toodles
Carrie, you should totally let Olivia move in with you to train for IMSG. I just want to hear the stories.
Gina - Eating will be glorious.
I just did the most pleasant pilates video. I might actually buy Stott Pilates: Core balance with Moria & PJ. There was lots of draping over the exercise ball, which felt fabulous. And I learned my poor hamstrings are tight, tight, tight.
I've been dancing around to this song today. This may have been one of the first tapes I bought, with my allowance. George Harrison was definitely singing about triathlons.
Beth- you are SOOO right! That absolutely is a Tri song!
Gina- yeah, it's not hard to dig that deep of a ditch when you go from 0 to 4 rides/week overnight. But it's also a good indication that I need to be careful about ramping up too much too soon with all my excitement to be biking again. I had a nice rest day today. The only thing I did were my pushups!
Quick hello ladies! Gina, sorry to hear of your Dad's anniversary! They are never easy, but that first one seems to be the toughest! I lost my Dad in '99. Everyone have a wonderful day! I got up this a.m., too sore to do the planned bike workout, so procrastinated it right into the afternoon! I WILL get it done. Marianne, have a wonderful, safe, trip to Guatemala! Pictures and reports please! BTW, is anyone else hungry as hell this week? I cannot get enough to eat!!!! Don't know what is up, but I am constantly hungry! Believe me, I'm not starving myself either!
Barb- That was exactly what I was posting in the body comp group yesterday. I was so hungry and eating everything. Thank goodness we have no junk food at work! It seems if I don;t exercise my hunger goes through the roof. Did an easy run this AM and much less trouble keeping hunger at bay with my usual nuts and chees snacks.
Kitima should be back any day. Can't wait to see pics!
Nemo- smart to rest, that is a huge dive!
Gina- Can't believe it's a year. Hugs to you. Keep Annabelle close for lots of love.
signed up for a 65 mile ride for CF upon my return 20 March so that should keep me honest and riding!!! pretty excited to actually sign up for something!!! besides IM MOO!! and camp..... my running mentor will be there too so good to reconnect with her as I don't live in same town and her DH passed away last August!! so a town to the north of me.. never done those roads and aid stations=== win/win!! "this is not a race" says the ad... uh huh..... this is the weekend right before our Spring Break so it should be either wam or uncommonly cold or raining!!! anyways psyched. and oh on the womens' tri tips, hear hear Sister Beth, you sing it!! we are 30% of the athletes out there and yep none of the race tees fit me either!! I say to women... "be yourself" cuz y'all know I love pink, wear mascara and have my nails done!!! but hey I have always been that way so why would I change just cuz I am on a bike!!???? don't lose your personality or think you gotta be somebody else just cuz you do triathlons... you know??
Gina - sorry about your Dad. That 1 year mark always seems to be a landmark anniversary - happy or sad. I hope you are thinking of all the happy times you shared with him. Yes, 6 but that is actually pretty manageable - these are all between the ages of 8 months to 1 1/2 years and are here for gun dog training so it's a bit different from the usual sit, stay, heel stuff . No moo camp for me . That weekend is my A race at Muncie. Don't think I haven't considered dropping it for camp though! It just sounds like soooo much fun, but I better stick with the original plan.
Very weird I have not had much appetite lately and THAT is very strange indeed!
Barb, I was going to get on and post exactly the same thing! I'm trying REALLY hard not to give in to the cravings, but hit my friend's choc. basket in her office once today for dove dark choc. hearts (only two!). DH is snowmobiling all day, so picked up the baby and we went to Moe's for dinner! Burrito for me and cheese quesadilla for her!
Yukky drizzly cold rain here today. Melting what's left of the snow. Ick. Would rather just have the snow.
You guys enjoying the olympics? I love it! Can't get enough! Watching women's 2 "man" bobsled right now.
Dana, I'm a total olympics junkie! I watched, seriously, 5 hour of coverage on Sunday alone. Today is my day off from work, so I watched from 2-4, and am watching now. I love boarder and ski cross!
Gina, sorry to hear about this sad anniversary. Sending hugs your way!
Robin, that's a lot of dogs to train. You're going to be an extra-busy lady!
Olivia, any word from your doctors? How are you feeling?
Ugh, I need to rejoin the body composition group. I had so much control up until about Thanksgiving but have been in a long downhill slide since then. This is my transition week, though, and I jump into half IM training next week, so hopefully I won't have too much trouble shedding these few excess pounds.

Tracy, welcome back in one piece!
Marianne - safe travels to you
Marianne - Can't believe you're going this weekend!
Fine. Be safe!
Marianne, safe travels to you and enjoy packing!
Tracy- Welcome back!! Looking forward to reading your Haiti race report.
Olivia- Hope you get to see the neurologist soon, scary that those symptoms occur during driving or riding
Robin- Training 6 pups?! Can't imagine. Are you coming to MOO camp?
MIchele-Enjoy the sun!! It was sooo nice here this weekend. Now we are back into the wet and cold. UGH.
Nemo- TSB of -31??? In Feb?
Carrie- You are one tough girl. Congrats on the TT. Sounds as if you guys have the best training group(s)
Suzanne- Resstttttttt and talk to Linda!
Linda- Talk to Suzanne
Kit- When you coming home?
Marianne- When are you leaving?
Beth- Oh Beth, can't wait to savor good eats with you
This Sunday marks the year anniversary of my Dad's death. Miss him every single day. His wisdom, his humour, his hugs, his voice.
Hugs to you all!
Tracy is back!!!

Kitima should be back any day. Can't wait to see pics!
Nemo- smart to rest, that is a huge dive!
Gina- Can't believe it's a year. Hugs to you. Keep Annabelle close for lots of love.
Busy day, but checking in with the ladies...
Have a great night, ladies!
