What It Takes...

  •  Well, I think that certainly counts anything by Abba out!  I've been digging through "cowgirl" songs for inspiration and nothing is doing it for me.  But as I thought about it more, it doesn't have to be "Cowgirl" but more "Girl Power" (which would be cool 'cause it would be nice to have a song that the ladies doing other races could use as inspiration as well).

One option that comes to mind (but perhaps seems a bit obvious) is "Sisters are doing it for themselves" by Eurythmics:

  • Happy Valentine's Day, my favorite ladies! I'm trying out my new kitchen "office" and liking it. Nemo -- I'm researching songs. But keep getting stuck on fun things that don't work, like the Dixie Chicks' cover of "Mississippi" and lots of Franz Ferdinand. I thought the band who's mission is to "make girls dance" might have something for us. . .

Unpacking is done. Art is on the walls. Belly is full of Martha Stewart's recipe for walnut crusted chicken. Life is not bad.

  • Linda, glad to hear that you're digging yourself out of the VO2 hole.

My running suffered during these last couple of weeks of snow and ice. My CTL graph is falling like a rock. I finally dragged my sorry butt out today and did my workout, but it wasn't pretty. I'm ready for winter to be over. I can deal with cold, but snowy, icy sidewalks are miserable.
  • If I have to go around with Waterloo in my brain, I will take it out on someone.

*** okay that does it, without listening to the song, I nominate it for first choice... I wanna see the above!!!! it just might be the extra push for sub 13!!!! lol. in fact I am gonna upload it now!

good job on unpacking, I hate all of that... many times but still.
glad everybody's day went nicely. I got a nice silver heart pendant on a black silk chain from James Avery and Grace got little heart earrings from my husband. my oldest came home to see us too...and it was just a pleasant day.
  • Well MORE snow, blowing & cold in KY (yah- I know, what's new??) Kids will be going to school till Jul at this rate. Made a big pot of M's taco bean soup- needless to say, I was the most popular gal in the office today. Fixed cornbread and served with chips & cheese. Wonderful easy and quite yummy. Perfect for a day like this. Hoping I'll make it home from work.

Ran trails on Sat and rode indoors with a group of my buds on Sun 2 1/2 hrs and watched Crank. Next chance of snow is Fri so looks like more trainer for me! Local tri sprint series is Sun and look like it'll be another run/swim. Always risky this time of year but folks really seemed to have fun at the last one and it was 5 degrees!

Hope everyone is having fun with the Prez day challenge. Linda- I hear ya. I've been listening to my body more and more. Plenty of on season time when I'll need to be hitting it right on. Like so many others here, I appreciate the mental strength to recognize and follow what you know YOU need. Plus Cali romping isn't down on the off season plan and you have been definitely getting work in with that.

Gina- Sweet lab puppy pics are killin me! You puppy mommas have some beautiful kiddos there! Hope you are not getting all the cruddy weather we're getting (although the puppy snow pics are the CUTEST)

Beth- Sparkle on gal! You got it going on!

Oliva/Carrie- keeping sending you gals the IM plan mojo! St George ain't gonna know what hit 'em!

All the other chickas- hope you had wonderful weekends/Vtine day!

  • do you burn more calories being cold???? what study is out for this??? ha, I am freezing...gonna go change clothes! but it sure would be nice to know that due to some scientific process of additionally heating up my body I am going to burn X more calories riding X miles! I would also like to be assured that X body fat is being burned off X thighs!! ha ha. I am gonna call it the GirlFriend Tundra Force Rule (GFTFR).... 1. you burn more calories with the extra effort of putting on X layers,,, and then washing all of them afterwards 2. you can't eat on the bike cuz your fingers are too frozen to pull the food out of your pockets so a calorie deficit, 3. you are too numb to eat a recovery meal afterwards 4. too hyped on caffeine from hot coffee to care! 5. the tights are so body hugging that there is no room for gained weight! 6. they are too expensive to replace 7. too cold to ride slow so you burn more cals riding fast 8. when you go to grab a snickers for 290 calories you recall how much effort it was to ride in 32 with 14mphs winds and say "no thanks!" 9. when Spring finally hits, you lose weight due to the loss of poundage of gear worn 10. Finally..... if you weren't riding outside on a dreary day, you would be inside EATING chocolate!!! Therefore, I have now scientifically proven that yes girlfriends do burn more calories riding in the winter!!!! lol....

off to change out of these and try to get warm!!! 1.5 ride outside, frigid out there! but great to be outside with two other new cyclists GFs....... smile. m
  • M---I totally think you burn more calories when you're shivering! That's part of my excuse for running out of gas in IMCDA in 2008...my nutrition plan got all blown from shivering so much during/after the swim! HA HA HA!!

Surprisingly my boy feels pretty good today after the big bike volume jump this weekend. I do feel mentally tired though. Or maybe that's just becuase work isn't holding my attention.

Nothing special for Valentine's day for us. I chilled some Caymus Conundrum (yummy white wine) in a snow drift and made some veggie curry. We sipped and ate while we watched the olympics. I know....so exciting.
  • Beth--that sent a sparkle to my heart!  Diamonds are made from carbon, so in the end, it's just two versions of the same thing. Right? Chicken sounds like it must be made here this week!

m--re Waterloo--you really don't want me to be that cranky with Keith and the boys for the next 8 months, do ya? I've had the stinkin' song in my head all day! Meant to mention two doggies things--Lupine leashes are guaranteed for life. Rudy bites one through, you just bring it back tot he store and they give you a new one. Cali chewed through THREE easy walk harnesses (all on the same days we got them)--sent 'em back with $7 for the replacement fee, and got another one in the mail pronto. She doesn't chew anymore. Thank heavens that is over. Not sure about the cold and calories. Sure feels like it burns more, but likely it doesn't just cuz life is like that. image

Kris--you got the Born to Run trail thing going on! Your weather really does stink--worse than here. We've had not much snow this year, but really cold since end October. 4-7" coming tonight, so that will mess up the outside running for a bit.

Not much going on here. Nice 5 miler run with Cali and Keith today (they did 4). Keith picked the route, so it was hills and more hills. He always does that! I really don't mind running hills (most of the time), and I often feel better going uphill than on the flats. Nice long weekend, but back to the grind tomorrow!

  •  Marianne, I like your math!!!!

We postponed V-Day dinner to tonight because things got a bit hectic yesterday.  But we had a nice dinner (baked him his favorite PB cookies) with lobster tails and shrimp.  Yummmy!

I'm taking tomorrow off- gonna hit the pool for a swim and do my core work, but my legs need a break from the bike.  I'm trying to take some of my own advice here and not dig too big of a whole for myself!  I did a short ride on the trainer this morning to finish out the Pres Day Challenge.  For those of you who don't see the Tweets- here's the video.  I happen to know Coach R has these same socks - and I think he should wear them at IMoo since they would go so nice with his outfit!  HA HA HA!

  • I am trying to plan my races for the season...

My goal this season is to improve my bike and increase my run distance/confidence.

    I am registered for:
    Fargo Marathon on May 22
Trek Sprint July 14ish (Beth and I are running it together to kick each others' @sses
and thinking about Racine, Steelhead or Door County late July for my A half-iron (any suggestions)
    Dairyland Dare in August
...only volunteering at IMoo to cheer the chicas! (planning on joining next year).

    Thanks,
    Jo
  • Miss Jo -- You might want to post this question to the whole forum. But no Trek for me this year! I'm going to chicka camp. And so should you!

I was listening to an old playlist today -- How about "On the Radio' by Regina Spektor? The lyrics always make me think of triathlon-doing.

    This is how it works

    You're young until you're not

    You love until you don't

    You try until you can't

    You laugh until you cry

    You cry until you laugh

    And everyone must breathe

    Until their dying breath

No, this is how it works

    You peer inside yourself

You take the things you like

And try to love the things you took

And then you take that love you made

    And stick it into some

    Someone else's heart

    Pumping someone else's blood

    And walking arm in arm

You hope it don't get harmed

    But even if it does

You'll just do it all again

  • Felt really good today.  Beautiful day, day off from work so took advantage.  5.5 miles in the AM with a 25 mile bike ride around the city.  Visited some of the sites in San Jose, the reason they call it Silicon Valley.  Tried to post pics, but couldn't figure it out.

Also feeling better that there maybe some stability in my life if I can just make some decisions and stick by them.

First race in 2 weeks, better get in the pool...

More pics of the puppy???? pretty please?

  • Jo, I don't live up there so don't know about those races. Beth yes nice words to the song, kids asleep so can't do the vid. Linda okay on nylon leash, glad you are enjoying TT course. sounds fun. everybody else?? my brain is mush, more coffee, will be back. m
  • Just popped in to say hi! Got my bike done this morning, although the legs weren't happy about it! Had to cut the workout short as I got up a little late, but better late than never! I have spring fever SOOOOOO bad! I'm wondering how my biking will be when I get outdoors. Have been working between the Y bike and my Tri bike on the trainer. Big difference between the two! ARGH! Will be interesting to see how I ride on the road. And Marianne, I'm with you...more coffee!!!
  • I weighed my winter garb... 4 - 5 pounds!! uh huh. ran with Rudy this morning..... sun was out! what a difference. Chicas, enter your data on the challenge for bike cuz we are ahead!!..... if you participated.
  • Just want to say HI! and that I love the energy in this forum!
Marianne- your list cracks me up.
    Beth- Very lovely head band.
Krisf and Nemo- You make me feel bad about my lack of cooking skills (NOT!) (I got over it a long time ago, but I do still envy your recipes).
Carly- 2 weeks! I can't imagine. Good luck!
  • Hi Women, I am a brand new member and have been very encouraged (moslty through Nemo) and Patrick. I am overhwelmed trying to figure this whole thing out. Not sure how much you want to hear from me. I am injured so have been "running in water" at our local YMCA which is really an interesting experience. Can only do it when there is a lifeguard and they are all 75+ years (men and women) but I am also a newcomer there so am interuppting their standard "classes" and trying to run around them. Nonethless, I hope it is helping me keep in shape. My first BIG race is 1/2 IM in Hawaii June 5th. I am doing it with my 34 year old son. I am also doing a mini event called "Race at the Base" in Los Alamitos, CA on the 26th. Hope somebody else might be doing it as a "small training" day. It is a reverse TRI, 5K run, 12 mile bike and 400 meter swim. My son and a few friends are also doing it. I am trying to get accepted into the CA ride in may but because my key event is 2 weeks later we are not sure. Also, I am scared to death I am not "qualified" for that group just yet

I would love to get to know you and will try to catch up on your chats. I also tried to build my profile many times but it would not save, think I finally made it, so you can also find me at "shrink", I have NO friends, so if you are looking to lend a hand to a newbie I would be greatly appreciative. Really excited!!! But nervous. Shink (AKA) Linda

  • Hi Linda! Welcome !!!!

I don't have much time, as I am heading out to work. You have come to the right place, just jump right in here. Everyone welcome and pretty much any subject goes. We will have to call you Linda "S" as you make the 2nd Linda!

    Gina

  • Hi Linda, (or do we call you Shink?) Sounds like there might be a story there...we LOVE stories in this women's forum! Glad you're hooked up with Nemo for the pool running. She's who I'd go to if I needed advice about it either from a physical or a mental standpoint. Sounds like you've got some great stuff on the horizon for your season. So do you live in CA?

Also with respect to the forums and trying to figure it all out. I still don't think I have it figured out. I sort of go with what I do have and then if I find I'm missing something I can always ask. Sometimes I do find that I need to take a few hours on a weekend and just play around clicking on stuff...some times I find things and go "ooh! so that's what the wiki's are." This weekend I found a discount code for some products...one of which I'd just purchased at full price the weekend prior. Now I know though!

Please, don't be shy about asking for help. There's always someone who knows and before you know it you'll be offering some one some help!

    Welcome!
  • Linda H, aka shink, or shrink!!
welcome and yes all details are welcome!!! that pool running is funny with everybody around. I used to swim when the water aerobics was happening and my meager swimming created some waves and got their hair wet or they would have noodles and let them waft into my lane! and you can smell their perfume too.. never knew how pungent water could be. and see hairs wafting down the lane.... but hey I race in yucky murky rivers and lakes so no biggie now....

this thread right here is one long conversation and if we can't find it elsewhere on the forum, we just ask each other here and one of us knows something.... like I didn't know about the WIKI codes...

girlfriend rule:: anything on sale = we share!! so thank Olivia
any good recipe, easy to make, we share! ETC.

we love our families, our pets, our bikes (maybe not in that order!!!) lol, no really we love life and glad that you wanted to share your story with us. it is safe here and we always try to encourage your goals but also have made a commitment to not let each other fail if in our power and not fry each other with overtraining as we know we normally have a bunch of stuff going on the back burners!! we love to see pics and videos too... and generally anything that makes us laugh, cry, or gets us smarter!
  • okay girls, I can never seem to remember the live chat or office hours with the coaches. so next time y'all see it, let's see if we can collectively go there!! I used to get emails, old style about them and was able to get in on them... but now?? that little twitter thing rolls by way too fast for me to read it!!! lol.... yep I need big font and SLOW too. I figured out twitter and posted some things.... nothing that you don't already know. but hey I almost tweeted the Sheila Moon Team Estrogen sale!!! with a EN hashtag!!! ha. you should see the buffs! I know we aren't spending money but it is so darling.. I am resisting the cute halteresque top. I am so ready for summer. scooting now.
  • Welcome Linda S!

I had a great long weekend visiting old friends up in Boston. It was rejuvenating for a couple of reasons, including my friends (obviously), a welcome three-day break from training as a reward for cramming in all five workouts the week before, and the ironic part: no snow in Boston! I mean, there was a teeny bit, but it was great to be able to walk outside without putting on ten thousand waterproof, fleece-lined layers. I drove home from the airport on the highways lined with four feet high piles of snow and felt my world closing in on me a bit... Ah well! Congrats all on kicking butt on the Challenge though!

Today I skipped the run. I give myself points for actually getting out of bed at alarm time, but I was standing outside with the dogs imagining the upcoming treadmill run and just. couldn't. do it. I went back to bed for another 90 minutes and my oldest dog actually got in bed and cuddled with me! I took that as a sign that I really needed some rest. I'm not sure if it's reverberations from the accumulated OS work, the physical therapy leg strengthening routine, or the couple hundred calories that are missing from my daily diet these days but my legs are POOPED! New running shoes arrived in the mail yesterday but they'll have to wait their turn...

  • Shrink! So glad to see you made it over here! Welcome and please don't be afraid to ask questions or just jump into the conversation! Oh- and you should probably join the Mentor/Mentee group dealio the guys have set up over here: http://endurancenation.us.dnnmax.com/Community/Forums/tabid/101/afv/topicsview/aff/69/Default.aspx I can be your mentor if you'd like!

Suzanne- sounds like a great mental & physical retreat! I think your dog knew you needed the extra rest! I'd like to say that Otto was intuitive that way, but if I paid attention to him every time he wanted to just snuggle down and sleep in- well, I don't think I'd ever get out of bed! HA!

I had a great ride outside this morning, thanks in part to Marianne. All those crazy rides outside in the cold inspired me to get out there this morning, even though it was just 32 degrees. I figured if I just did it before I really thought about it- that it would be OK. And it was. I was pleanty warm as long as I was doing the intervals. I think just riding along would be miserable, but if you ride hard/fast (and dress appropriately) it's really not that bad!

Hope everyone is having a great day!
  • Oh- and don't worry about the "Friend" thing. I don't think any of us are using it! I probably have 3 "friends" in my profile!!! Pretty sure I really have a lot more than that in the EN Hause!

What we need to get you set up with is a Signature Block. That's probably the most helpful stuff for communicating to others where you live and what your races are. Check out this great Google Doc that Beth set up for us which walks you through what to do:

    http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0A...&hl=en

  • good job Nemo, yeah you gotta ride fast!! no lollygagging out there!! nice Suzanne, okay scooting off the forum... housework and lunch with my mother..!! I am windblown again but thankful for Rudy to get outside with!! he is fun to watch run.... his tail makes a circular motion when is running fast! maybe mine does too?? lol.... I don't wanna know.. but anyways, his four feet gallop along and his tail seems to be for balance and for some sorta propulsion. and he cuts over fast too, he also has no fear of "doggin himself out" either as his tongue is hanging out.. Michael Jordan style. and oh my goodness I just received notification of my 30 HS reunion!!!! went to the 20th one.. hubby and I graduated together and bro in law too. told hubby I thought I had a four hour ride that Saturday morning June 19th... but other than that okay. smile. it will be local. oh my goodness. high school. I SO wanted to be in the popular click... and was about one social category aways.. not enough money, no sports or cheering, just good grades and nice enough!! I didn't have a car, not a bunch of family money, rode my bike to work at Sonic, made straight A's, walked to school sometimes too embarrassed to ride the bus!! was in the Drama club and French and History, okay really geeky sounding now!!! liked school, never cheated or let anybody cheat off of me either!! sat in the front row and had no trouble taking names for the teacher either!!! oh my. if sack lunches were in, then I seemed to be eating cafeteria and vice versa!! had to wear dresses 4/5 days cuz my mother said and didn't own any blue jeans or sweats or tennis shoes til college!!! and my hair had to be up!!! pretty conservative. it's a wonder that husband put up with all of that and we started dating when I was 16 and him 17....!! and yep he would come by and pick me up for school or pick me up from late night Sonic.. and seemed to have some money!!! lol.... and now 30 years later, I go back for a reunion and have a confidence that I didn't have, not worried about being in the right click!!, thank goodness, (let's feel sorry for our teenagers right now!), and still with hubby! he bought me a car so doesn't pick me up anymore!! hee hee (that Element of mine which I love).....oh my gosh,,,,

okay so now that I have taken a sidetrack down Memory Lane!!!! .....!!!!! ha ha oh my goodness is all I have to say just thinking about HS!
  • Whoa...Don't even want to go down that ole high school memory lane-- accckk! I'd like to have my weight from senior year of high school but that's about it :-)

Welcome Linda S! Just remember, no such thing as a stoopid question- very healthy and open environment. If we can't find the answer- we'll point you in a direction.

Michele- Taco bean soup = very easy recipe (and if you are vegetarian or like veggie version, simple as opening cans- but don't ever tell the guys that!) :-) Reheats well. I served with cornbread, chips & cheese but also think it would be very yummy over a baked potato as well! I'll have to remember that recipe as it would be great to start up a pot on those long run/ride days and have a meal ready to go when I get back in!

Still 25 degrees here with more snow possible on the weekend. Below norm cold temps will continue next 2 wks. Went ahead and bought the cute Aeropostle dress M came up with and flip flops to match. Helps me focus on warmer and skinner days to come!

Nemo, Robin, Michele & sparkle Beth- Way to go on the Prez day challenge!! If I forgot any chickas- apologies- just been watching Twitter and trying to catch all the fun!
  • FLIP FLOPS!!!!  OMG I almost forgot.   I was shopping for Joe's V-Day card at a local gift shop and ran accross these amazing Flip Flops.  You can buy different color "thong" tops to put on them so you can match your outfit without having to carry around tons of extra shoes.  So perfect for summer time!  I thought of you ladies immediately and wanted to share:

    www.switchflops.com.au/

Hang in there ladies- Summer can't be too far away!!!

  • Hi Friends! New laydeez--hooray! Swamped here today. Talk to you later!

  • LOVE the switchflops! Kids out of school AGAIN - aaaccckkkkk!!!! Busy at work, have to make clay fish for Cub Scouts banquet (DON"T ASK! image! Ash Wednesday supper at church, choir practice for boys, icy, snowy cold - I am definitely having a weather related sense of humor failure.

Suzanne - glad you had a fun weekend and got some extra zzzzz's

Welcome Linda S!!!!! What everyone else said - You are in the right place!

Okay - clay fish..... here I come. I am so NOT artistic - this could be a freakin disaster image

  • Really funny hearing from ALL of you, also funny, I spelled my own name wrong, I wrote shink, and it is shrink, so YES I AM A SHRINK!! Gazillion stories. I have a private practice in sunny so cal. Mostly I do forensic psychology, lots of gorey murder cases, for another time. Lately work has been slooowww so I am racking up a lot of training (which I am not supposed to be doing), nothing meaningful. I got a new super duper indoor trainer because I am on coumidin (long story there) so I cant ride outside or crash, doctors said I would bleed to death. So hopefully one more month and I am off of this nasty drug.
I love reading all about high school, my FORTY year is next year and it should be really interesting. Was in the "in" crowd, but didn't stay in touch with hardly any of them, life went separate ways, but NO ONE WOULD BE DOING TRIS. I like the order of interests:
    husband
    kids, grandkids
    doing to the desert
    riding my bike
    "thinking about doing tris"
preparing for tris- I think I like the idea of tris, nervous about actually performing them!
I am actually kind of boring right now, so I am working on that by attending camps (tri) and putting myself out there! I am trying to get through my 5 inch thick binder of how to do a 20 week training program, OS, IS, and figuring out all the lingo. Just rode with my very first power meter, have no idea what the numbers mean yet. And yes, ran in water with all the geezers (who are starting to ask me about my race now) which is very sweet. They are a funny group! OK, so back to life. My husband says it is very difficult to be married to a "shrink", he says nothing gets by me. The truth is my head is always on on on and sometimes I wish it werent and I could be in la la land more often. Think that is what I like about riding. I used to love to run, now can't, I have NEVER ENJOYED THE SWIMMING. ugh, now in cholorine. BUT, I have my first formal swim lesson tomorrow at the Y, with a swim coach (per EN), bought a pack of 6 30 minute lessons, so gonna try to learn it the right way, ughh. I am just not a great swimmer and haven't had to face that too much. Now tomorrow, I willl end up with a ball under my chin ((I saw that lesson the other day), OK, that is a lot of updates for you. Enjoy the snow, sunshine, rain where ever you all are. It is sunny and warm here (about 72).
