  • RnP,

I already have a PT but need to buy WKO software.  Should I order that directly from Training Peaks or through you guys?  Thanks!

Newbie to EN but actually purchased a wired PT about 6-7 months ago and now need to learn to use it! The PT is currently on a Bontrager Race Lite wheel. I also have a set of Mavic Cosmic Carbone's without PT hub. Would really like to get a PT hub on the Mavic wheel but don't know if that is possible since the PT is older (wired). Not fond of the wheelcover but would even consider getting a new Mavic wheel with hub if available??

    Suggestions????

    Thanks,

    Joe

Joe, a PT can't be built into that Mavic.

  • Rich,

Should I consider selling the wired PT and consider purchasing a wireless?  Obviously, a lot more choices.  I know Mavic has a PT race wheel but I assume that current hub won't work with the wired computer?  Sorry for all of the questions.  Really enjoy training with power but seems crazy not to race with it as well?

    thanks,

    Joe

  • Mavic has a lot of proprietary stuff that doesn't work with a lot of other stuff so...hard to say.

Yes, if you train with power and don't race with it, I will punch you in the nutz when you get off your bike in T2...seriously

Let's take this and specifics up in email, rich@endurancenation.us. Very easy for us to lose conversations in these threads. Thanks.

  • I'm thinking about getting a new powertap. I have the PowerTap SL from 2006, and it's going strong, but I was thinking about selling that and upgrading to the wireless version. Are there any pros/cons that come to mind when considering the older SL and the newer, wireless models?
  • I have been looking into getting a power meter for the last year and have been waiting for the metrigear Vector to come to market (that may be a very long wait.) I want to go ahead and buy one soon so I can train on it and be ready for IMCDA next June.  I just can't decide between PT and Quarq. This is my situation:  I have 3 bikes: My old tri bike with 650 wheels that stays strapped to my computrainer 365 days per year. I get up at 2:30 in the morning to train, so that is my main training bike during the week. Weekends in the summer I ride my newer triathlon bike with 700 wheels. In the winter when I don't want to expose my baby (my tri bike) to all the mud and grit on the roads, I ride my older road bike with 700 wheels and a triple crank. A PT is not going to be interchangable with all 3 bikes because of the wheel size difference. Is a quarq out of the picture for my road bike because of the triple crank set? I could get a PT for my road and tri bike and use the computrainer data from my indoor bike, but will it be accurate and consistent data? I need some input please!

Wireless = ANT+ = a range of monitors from Garmin and the Saris/Joule. I'm really digging all the data that the Joule gives me.

    Vicki,

    Notes:

    • What about selling the old tri bike and moving the new tri-bike on/off the trainer? This would allow you to purchase one PT wheel that you move from road bike to tri bike, very easily. No need to switch out components, etc (see below). From what you describe, looks like you'd ride the bike outside on the weekend, slap it on the trainer Sunday night and you're done until Saturday morning?
    • If you went with the Quarq we would recommend you go from a triple crank to a compact crank. Do a search on the forum for compact crank and you'll find a ton of discussion. Just a better gearing system for many reasons. However, this change would require a bike shop to do some stuff with your shifters. You'd then move the crank back and forth from bike to bike vs moving the PT wheel above between bikes. You are likely more familiar with the later and therefore more comfortable with this?
  • Rich - I need to get a replacement PT CPU.  The list price at CycleOps is $99.99.  Is there an EN discount?

    Thanks,

    Jim

  • @Jim, no, I can't get a discount on the old CPU. I'd recommend taking the opportunity to upgrade to the Joule. I get you pricing on that if you like.

  • That would be nice, but not in the budget right now! I have a wired SL system, so would need to replace everything. At some point I will take you up on that offer...
  • Rich,

Do you also get preferred pricing on Quarq?  If so could you email me pricing?

    Thanks,

    Luke

  • Luke,

Please email me at rich@endurancenation.us. We'll handle it over there, thanks.

  • I'm ready to make the jump to training and racing with power. Maybe Santa can make it happen this year? All training and racing is on my 3 yr old Cervelo Dual. A little freaked about mounting $2000 of tech on a $2000 rig, but think it can MASSIVELY help my game. Problem is; WHAT DO I NEED TO GET!?! So much info out there and I'm totally confused! Only been with EN two months, and also find we are supposed to run specific gearing? Do I have the right crank & cassette, or will I get a kick in da ____? Or do I need to be a VERY good boy to get a gearing upgrade from Santa, too?
  • Brad,

Please email me at rich@endurancenation.us and we'll get started.

  • I use a power tap elite + wireless built into a DT Swiss Wheel and use a Cycleops Joule 2.0 with heart strap and really like the features. The only thing I don't have is a wheelcover. Is that something I can send in to your powers to be RnP and have one customed made.

    Thanks
  • Hey RnP,
My wife has authorized Santa to send a power meter my way. I'd like to go crank-based so I have lots of flexibility with wheels. Can you let me know the process for getting a Quarq through you guys, and also the cost? Also, I'd love to have this for my january OS start...don't know about lead times, though.
    Thanks!
    Matt
  • Rich - Santa is whispering about a Joule.....can you get me pricing?
  • OK...I'm ready to take the plunge. Been training with power in my first OS (NOV) this year on my CompuTrainer. A race is May (IMSG). Want to get a power meter for my TT before I take it out of the trainer (Feb?). What should I get? How much should I expect to spend?

Cost is important (most bang for buck but don't want to outgrow this in two years). I have one bike (Cervelo P3 with Shimano components) and one set of wheels (would like to race/train on same wheel set). I don't plan to have two bikes or multiple wheel sets. Don't have an ANT+ compatible computer yet (training on Suunto T6C HR monitor).

I'm fairly mechanical and technically savy. Would like a mid-high end computer that will stay mid-high end for a few years (if possible). May be time to switch to a Garmin 310XT and get rid of the Suunto (but I'm not against a separate computer head for the bike and keeping my Suunto and footpod for training/racing).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
  • I bought a used SRM on ebay. Check it out, there are several PC-V units that go for around a thousand. The V is a wired unit and it takes a bit of work to get the sensors located and the cable run up to the head unit. Since you said you are mechanically savy, it shouldn't be a problem for you. The biggest thing to watch for in a used SRM is that the batteries in both the crank power unit and the head unit have been changed recently. They last about 2 years. The seller said the unit I bouhgt was in "perfect working order", but the batteries were dead in the head unit and I had to send it to SRM to get them replaced, $160. Maybe not a bad thing, since I know I won't have to worry about it for a couple years. If you decide to go that route, let me know if you have questions, I may be able to help you.
  • Decided to upgrade my power-tracking ability. I have a PT SL+ (wireless with ANT+) on Zipp 404... actually just got a wheelcover from Wheelbuilder before I caught on to going through EN, doh! I've been doing my OS power on my CT, but used my 310XT as my power computer last season... really want to have the ability to do realtime TSS/IF etc. Thinking I will get the Joule assuming that is the best/right choice? How do I proceed? Hmmm... gonna have to make sure my wife gets a good xmas present given all the new "toys" I am buying!
  • @Art, email me at rich@endurancenation.us. I can invoice you via PayPal and WB can ship today. $399 for the Joule without HR vs $449, $449 with vs $499 retails, + $12 shipping.
  • Done. thanks again Coach R.
  • How do I get access to the Power Webinar after purchasing it? Same for the WKO software?

  • Jason, I just sent you a link to download the webinar. I didn't see a payment for WKO+. Let me know if I've missed something.

  • I have been training with power in my first OS (Oct) this year on my CompuTrainer. I do most of my training on the Computrainer and will continue to do so even as spring arrives.  However, the thought of racing w/o the ability to track my power numbers is too nerve racking to even seriously contemplate so I want to get a powermeter for my race bike.

As this will essentially be a race only asset, I want to minimize investment.  Bike is Felt B2Pro with Shimano and Zipp 808 rear race wheel.  I have a 310xt and want to use this as my computer.

I am bike mechanics illiterate (meaning to work on that) so am not interested in installing this dude myself.

What to get?  Can it be added to my existing Zipp wheel?  Help....

  • lori,

coach rich can get wheelbuilder to put a powertap hub on the zipp 808.  i am pretty sure the powertap hub works with the garmin 310x, but ask rich.

    good luck!

    gh

  • Rich,

I sent the payment for the WKO Software.  I didn't want to send it until I knew I wasn't screwing up. Got the webinar thanks.

    Lori,

I could be wrong but I believe you can't add a powertap to an already built wheel. As far as the 310xt it will work with powertap or quarq.

  • Lori,

    I recommend you:

    • Consider selling the CT in the spring to finance the below and also pick up a "normal" trainer. Sounds like you train indoors on the trainer year round for safety reasons. Totally fine, we get that. but having power outside and for racing is invaluable and I think you should consider selling what you have to get the setup that many of us have settled on
    • Also sell the 808 to finance a...
    • PT Pro+ built into a Hed Belgium wheel + a wheelcover
    • For training you'll ride the PT in the Belgium, either outdoors or indoors on your less expensive trainer.
    • For racing, just toss the wheelcover on the same wheel.
    • Yes, you'll be able to use your 310XT with this setup, reducing the total cost for you.

Let's pick this up via email, rich@endurancenation.us
