I also just realized I haven't been doing any exhaustion tests at the end of the week. I do the max set which usually wipes me, then just move on to other stuff. I'll know in a hurry when I start week 5 whether or not I need to go back and repeat the previous week.
I'm taking a different approach to this challenge, more long-term. It was working out for me before the broken ribs, so I'll continue with it.
Each standard push-up day, I'll do 3x, on M/W/F. This basically extends it to WAY more than six weeks, but it also makes me sure I can continue with it without shelling myself. Basically, when I feel like I can do each day 3x, I'll move on - seems pretty simple.
I'll probably start with week 2 or 3, then continue from there.
So, I did week 1, day 3 today because the core class and P90X wrecked me and I felt I needed some time off. Anyway, I'll catch up this weekend. Does this strength building equate into faster swim times??? I hope????
Finally did my test and knocked out 40. Not sure if I am happy or bummed that I can't do more. Gotta look to see where to start. No situps- I hate those things
My back & shoulders were killing me yesterday so I hit up the AthletesTreatingAthlete site for some self massage instruction and voila- feeling MUCH MUCH MUCH better! So I'll try day 2 of week 4 on my lunch break today. But I'm not going to kill myself if I can't hit the max set. If I'm having trouble I'll go back and repeat week 3 instead and give myself a little more time to adjust.
After the first set of 25 I immediately knew that the "Max Set" was gonna kill me. So I backed down to Week 3. Got 105 done and hopefully I wont be so sore this time that I can't sleep!
I struggled a bit today, but a little better than Monday. Had to take a small break in the midst of that last killer set, but (barely) got it done otherwise. I think I'm ahead of where I started, but falling behind what they think you'll be able to do in 6 weeks or whatever it is.
The last set today was "at least 40", which turned into "at least 26, then rest a bit and then get to 40".
I was in the 3rd column of the week 4 and clearly it was a bit much for me, though i got the absolute number in. I'll retest over the weekend to see the progress. I bet I can hit the 40 that's supposed to get you into column 3 of week 5, but I wonder if column 2 is a more realistic choice.
I'm getting to this way late but I figured I'd join in. I don't have access to google docs (DOD computer) for the next few weeks so I can't really update. I did the initial test and got 70. My arms and shoulders are killing me. I figured this would be a good time to jump in as I've got a PT test in Decemeber. I'm trying to convince a bunch of guys I work with to do it as well.
I'm joining in a little late but I could use the mental boost. The bike/run sets are killing me.
I've got a PT test coming up as well, and I usually just stop at 100, with plenty of juice left. It's already above the max score for the military at my age. I figure this is the only physical test I might do well at around here. Anything to do with SBR, I'll get dusted by everyone trying this challenge. WELCOME TO MY WORLD!!! I'm starting at Week 3 today, see how high I can actually get at the end of 6 weeks.
I'm definitely on hiatus in the challenge. Week 5 (well really week 3, but started in week 3), had to drop down to column 2 and definitely needed extra rest before I attempted the max sets. Was still feeling pretty good about the progression, plan was to finish off week 5 yesterday, but was not to be. Sprained my wrist pretty bad taking 4-wheelers over motorcross jumps yesterday. There's about a 50/50 chance I'll end up in the hospital any given weekend these days since this is pretty much my one month off out of the entire year.
Anyway, super glad I didn't get hurt all this season so I'll accept a few injuries in the offseason to get it out of my system. Can't ride my bike either (cant grip the bars) which sucks, but I'll be back to the pushup challenge whenever this sorts itself out. That or I need to start doing them all one handed...
Starting in Week 3 tomorrow. I remember this pain.
Here is what IM training does for your legs- no surprise either.... I decided to try the 200 squats challenge. I started with the initial test. When I got to 100 and felt more than ready to keep going, I decided that there wasn't much of a challenge there and I should do something else.
The pull up challenge is not available to view. Guess I'll stick with my Get Insanity DVDs.
I had a bad test Sunday (just did something stupid), so I retested this morning and got to 45. A little while later, I did the first workout for the week. Oh my. What I want to know is why 45 pushups rested, done to exhaustion, means I'm supposed to be able to do 40 twice in the same set with just a minute between bouts! I'm guessing I'll be stuck here on Week 5 for a while...
The DW and I just started Week 3. It is starting to get real tough to crank out that final set. I am proud to say that the DW is keeping me going strong, and oh by the way is kicking my butt!!
Carl- you are so close you must be able to taste it! Trevor- I guess I've been on a little break from this challenge too. The weekend hiking trip put a real crunch in my schedule and I didn't get the pushups done. So I've re-started week 3.....again. Good news- it wasn't so hard the third time around! HA HA HA!
Today's session was "easier" because it was a lot of sets of ~20. The last one was supposed to be 45. I got to 41, took about 15 sec again and did 9 more to "finish" the last set. It's pretty obvious my weakness is that whole "consecutive" thing....

Cary- only way I could ever bench press my weight would be to cut off my legs. :-)

uhm- week 4 sounds scary!
happily still in week 2 "bliss". hoping to crack the 70 mark today.
That's ez to fix, always turn up the heavy metal tunes to 11 on the volume right before that last set.
(And, yes, that was my very first smiley face ever inserted into any post)

156 this AM, 50 in the last set. I'm hoping my test this weekend proves I'm ready to jump up. 100 in a row still seems like a VERY long way off...
Oh, you are ready!
@Carly, you're a monster!
I finally started again last night. Boy, 1.5 months off really killed me. Could barely finish week 2, 2nd day. Onward and upward!

but 185 on the day did sound impressive. :-)
Looking for results....+7 pushups in 2 weeks!!!!
It could be a really long road to 100...

190 this AM. Those sets of 50 are really tough!
