  • No way, Rochester! I grew up in Spencerport and get back to the area a few times a year.

  • safe travels Carly!

I can't do bag balm - it just makes everything too greasy and can't ever get it out of the shorts! I like Assos the best, but it is $$$$. Thinking about ordering a tube of DZ's new stuff and see how I like that. I am lukewarm on Chamois Butt'r - it seems to break down faster than the others. Like Nemo I have used Body Glide too and believe that a little "strategic shaving" helps too ;-)

Marianne - I am finally getting a morning where I don't have to run off to anything bright and early so I am looking forward to looking through your blog more carefully. Have a cup of coffe at the ready and house is somewhat quiet image

Kris and Nemo - I just don't get it on the Adamo! I soooo wanted to love that saddle, but my sit bones (which the saddle found for me Suzanne!) were so sore for days on end and I never could adjust to it. I tried for 3 months and just finally got tired of being bruised and swollen, but it was just heaven up front. I thought the V-Flow from Cobb would be the answer, but I got numb on it. Go figure. Maybe it is because I ride a road bike and am using clip on bars - I am probably just stuck between two worlds image. Someday when and if I get a tri bike I hope the Adamo will work for me. In the meantime the search for saddle comfort continues......

Linda - great job on using those aero bars - you will get more and more comfortable as you go. Be careful while your on that coumadin though - sounds like you don't have long to wait until your off it and hope you get some answers on your knee soon.

As I said above - having a quiet weekend which is nice. The pool is closed today so I am thinking of maybe dusting off the old nordic track and see how that feels on the hip/back or maybe just some core/pilates stuff. Planning to cook a nice dinner tonight, prepare for teaching Sunday School tomorrow and then we are taking the boys to see The Red Badge of Courage at the Lexington Children's Theatre tomorrow after church. They do some great productions for kids and Jack is REALLY into the Civil War at the moment. We've been reading the book together at night, but haven't gotten all the way through it as I hoped we would before tomorrow. Weather report says rain and 52 all weekend so I don't feel so bad about not being able to go ride or run. I'm getting really excited about my trip to Boston next weekend - leaving bright and early Friday AM!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!
  • Oh and if anyone has an extra 10 mins to spare and wants lasagne making lessons from a 9 year old!

  • Suzanne, I think I may have mentioned this before...I live in Fairport! Carly's gonna be 20 minutes from us and I can't wait until they are back here! We already have dinner plans for later this week.

I know you guys have been talking saddles and I love mine so I've only sort of been paying attention, so if you've already discussed this one, I apologize!...I ride a specialized Jett. It took awhile to get used to it again after having the baby, but I really enjoy it. I did IMLP in 07 on it and found it very comfy.

Ugh, wind and rain here today, but ran a local 5 miler for my final vdot. felt great the whole race and am very satisfied! celebrated with a large iced coffee from dunkin.

Robin have fun at the theatre! That's great Jack's so into the civil war!

... a little "strategic shaving" helps too ;-)

Previously though, I've used Body Glide and Seat Saver (from hammer nutrition), with good results.

  • girls dumb question here?  was I supposed to have changed my training plans to some sorta beta thing?   just not sure about this.?

  • Yes, we are all supposed to be there. You should have been automatically moved to 2.0 is my understanding. But, I don't know much! I'm on week 20 of OS and haven't retested my run or bike until this week we are supposed to. And, I'm training by HR only. Not sure how to do the bike, since it is all WKO stuff, which I don't understand anyway! My run and bike are slow, slow, and slower!!! Saturday's bike was horrible! Have to say I'm concerned...
  • Yeah, I think we were all moved to the new 2.0 plans over last weekend (or maybe it was the weekend before). I had a blast yesterday volunteering with the Tri Club. Nags Head has this annual St Patty's Day Parade. It's big stuff for this small town- HUGE crowds (seriously- I didn't know that many people eve lived out here!!!) but the "floats" are really low budget afairs. Basically, anyone with a pickup truck can become a float by putting a couple of folks dressed in costume in the back and buying loads of candy to throw to the spectators. It's kinda like a really lazy way to go trick or treating!

Anyway- this year the "Go Far" program (which gets kids running and trains them to do a 5K later in the spring) used the clear parade path to do a little practice run (all of 1 mile). The Tri Club volunteered to ride our bikes ahead of the kids to ensure the parade route was clear (see my shock about how many people show up for this thing- oh, and everyone is drunk too so that whole safety thing was no joke!). Anyway, we lead the kids out and then hopped off our bikes to hand out metals to all of them who finished. These were kids from age 5-12 and the smiles on their faces as they finished was just awesome!!! Ya gotta love stuff like that!
  • Nemo, that sounds like a really cool day of volunteering!

I had a really fun weekend with lots of playing. And both weekend workouts were on-the-nail awesome. 30/30s are getting a little too easy.

Jo Cobble, the awesome niece and nephews and I went to the Family Farmed expo. Cheese and milk samples! Free Chipotle burrito coupons! Getting to see all the different CSA boxes. I came home with the most beautiful eggs and pork.

Sunday, my friend Elizabeth and I woke up early and went to Target to scope out all the Liberty of London stuff. I came home with 1) the best candle ever 2) crazy floral print melamine picnic plates and 3) three very twenties style dresses, one which makes me look like a peacock. (and looks way more fabulous in real life than in the online pic) I have no idea where I'm going to wear this dress. Elizabeth suggested gardening. And then there was brunch, a sport in Chicago, really.

  •  M-  Are you seeing your plan on the dashboard or your plan sections?  If not- have you put  IMWI in "your race" under Training, Your Season, Add?

Rainy weekend here   Couldn't get to sleep last night- may be time change adjustment.  Got a good trail run in Sat w/o getting rained on.  Allergy season is upon us once again.  Think I may be consulting with allergist again- just wish there was one locally who was an athlete (runner, triathlete etc).  They just "GET IT".  We are our own species ya know.... helps if you speak the language.  Not sure if barking down the wrong path, so plse chime in if you have any ideas, recommendations etc.  Last 2 years, I've been on a myraid of inhalers and pills just to make it through the spring-fall.  Usually I can come off all of it after Sept-Feb- not as much training and a good hard freeze can be a wonderful thing.  I'm just not big on pumping all the meds into my body.  There has to be a better way!

  • I am going to the beach next week!!! I am so psyched (read more in JAN OS tng) but I am on the crash course bikini diet which I chose Cadbury little eggs to start day one with!!! lol. now you know I went off sugar right but totally ahd to eat whatever came my way in Guat and now haven't broken the sugar and for some reason bought a whole bag of those little darlings. so today I just enjoyed all of them and skipped the important meals!! ran and rode so used those little babies for my "recovery" food you know to replenish glycogen stores!! now I gotta dig out the swimsuits and other sundries and all of a sudden show up on the beach!! oh my. but with my kids...so don't think I am seriously anorexic but day one of "how to get in beach shape in one week" is run/walk for 1.5 hours looking for what you think is your lost dog, and then riding with friends for 22 miles! and eating chocolate... you too for the low, low price of $19.99 can buy my new diet! tomorrow/ hit the track and the pool and do some abs!! and also try on the swimsuit!! so forget about the cabbage soup or other lettuce style diets, put your swimsuit on and show up to a public pool!! or put your lycra bike shorts..... so you can't make it to the beach and want me to take some pics of the sunset for you??? that is Option B, $9.99..... just a postcard sent from FLA? ++ = $4.99.

lol, smile, oh my goodness I am going away again!!! m
  • Thought you don't want to have while doing yoga..... Did I put deodorant on today? And even worse when you aren't exactly sure.

Ran 5 this morning in almost shorts weather (44 degrees) and looking at high 50's to ride tonight (woo hoo). Song running through my head.... Bicycle Race - Queen... I want to ride my bicycle....
  • yoga deodarant?? funny! kris
had a great run, and I was in shorts! I love it. love love love to run in shorts! scooting. okay can somebody remind me about phone calls, confs this week, I saw the memo but really I am not with it. trying to remember teacher conf today!!
  • Kris- Believe it or not, Joe gave me a new Ringtone for my birthday and it's "Bicycle" by queen. Kinda a joke gift, but I LOVE IT!

Oh- and what's worse than "did I put on deoderant" is "why did I eat that burrito at lunch"! Yeah, can we please skip the inversions today?

Marianne- I think the call is gonna be Thursday night. I don't think we've gotten any of the details yet (like what number to dial into). If we have- someone point it out to me!
  • Kris -- Definitely don't want to think that! Except in bikram, where deodorant can't help anyone.

I love all this talk of running in shorts and going to the beach! I keep talking about my bicycle. The pain cave in fun and all, but I really, really love my bike when I get to go outside. Although, I must admit getting shiny, new Dash dirty is not the most appealing of thoughts. And suspect this bike will spend more time in the bathtub than I do.

  • changing the subject but going back a few days, Linda H: good advice given to me by my bud: David.. on initially learning how to ride aero. okay I just did what he told me, and still do!! I go right arm first in bars and then left and all I did first was practice getting aero. so don't worry about the ride per se. just right arm, left arm, then up left arm, right arm, and then switch it, but up/down/up down, then down and look behind you to the left, then down and look to the right behind WHILE maintaining a straight line... then try this, find a road, not with cars!! and use the yellow lines in the middle and keep your wheels inside the lines while being aero and doing all of the above, or get over to the white line on side of road, throw in some looking down at small /big rings while not swerving, advancing to pulling water bottle out of holder, reaching in back pocket. I have yet to master the no hands though! I know. horrible roadie but okay tri geek! you also want even pedaling, no pedal hard and then coast and weave about the road, count 1 - 5 and keep pedaling looking smooth. okay now while in motion, aero, start shifting all around the gears and looking down at chains to see what is happening when you do X! practice un clipping if need be and clipping back in. because your goal is to ride aero for your whole race and be totally relaxed on your bike while doing so. so practice all of this before you get out on road by yourself when you actually have to also think about cars, and potholes and the like! anyways, he had me practice the little details over and over again and not out on the actual ride. "skills and drills", is what I now call them! I am still horrible at many skills and can laugh at my inability to peg a 90 degree turn or actually mount a bike barefooted.... smile. but I did learn how to ride aero so can you! also, work on your flexibility, yoga stretching and core strength while not on the bike so you can generate power while your body keeps you intact! have fun and laugh at yourself when things go wrong!! and of course share the fun stuff with us so we can laugh with you!! m
  • @Marianne - thanks!  I actually just printed this out... some of the stuff I can do (get in and out of aero, and get a gel out of my back pocket), but I still have a long way to go as far as bike handling skills... so this is great for me to keep in mind, particularly since I'll be off the roads for probably 7-8 months total by the time I hope to be able to ride again - since my last real ride ended in a crash I'm sure my mojo has suffered....  and it will be good for me to take some time to become one with my Felt again (off the trainer).

And, I must admit, I'm comforted to read that you don't go no-hands, either.

  • Hi Girls, been off the conversations but have been checking in.THANK YOU TO ALL GIRLS WITH THE TIPS FOR MY GIRLY GIRL PROBLEMS, TRIED THE BABY CREAM (DESITIN) AND THE BUTTER STUFF....helped a lot, need to work on getting the "wax", diidn't have time or place for that!!! We did go to the desert this weekend, got a couple good rides in (30 miles each or more), doing much better with aero bars. Have to admit, riding in aero bars is a ton easier than sticking my hole dang body up in the air and dragging me slower and slower. Not sure if this is making sense. Guess I am just kind of pretending that I can get out of my pain cave for good and join the "real world of doing TRIS's). Have yet to go back to the Y and face all those people, so instead "ran" on the treadmill and hurt myself (some more) Did a really looooong swim, but slow pace, just needed to get back in the water.
On a side note, Got slammed down on our "offer" to get a second place at the desert (husband licking his wounds..me too) we thought we had a great chance. Oh well.....

I just sent out a "HELP" to Patrick and Rich....everyday I click on my "data tool" it still continues to say "you have no training today), I am TWELVE weeks from my "A" race and finally sent off an email saying kind of "now what", I am following as best I can the pdf. version, and yes I am very injured (but pretending I can pull this whole running thing off). Had my nucluer bone scan yesterday, so super nervous this whole thing could all be one big disappointment. I leave for my TRI camp in less than two weeks in Tucson and a week later, son and I flying to Kona for a 5 day training for our "A" race. So although I am supposed to be in full training mode, nothing seems to be coming together.
However, I love the feedback I have gotten though to "just look at this as a training race" and to save everything for my next big race. Every time I re-remind myself about that I can take a deep breath and go eat some cookies (which is what I had for breakfast today).

It was in the mid 70's in the desert, so rode both days, probably 70 miles total, swam about a mile (slow) and then yesterday ran 5 miles (with my knee killing me). I am stupid stupid stupid, (did this after I had the nucleur injection (had to wait for 6 hours for it to disperse to then come back for the scan) but wanted the scan to show the REAL INJURY (so my strategy was beat the hell out of me knee/bones and if something was there it was going to really show up). Should have some real answers over the next few days.

Yet to go back to the Y, really think I am better off finding a new friendlier version pool venue. Just wanted to say hello to everyone and enjoyed reading about the chocolate egg diet as I am eating my oreos and licking my wounds. +image
  • finally finished the choc eggs, good thing too! so now off the sugar, well just had two warm cookies but NOW off the sugar, whew. my arm hurt in my swim today has't bothered me since my steroid injection earlier in the Fall so I was downright irritated too! and got in a lane with a new swimmer dude. my goggles sucked my eyes out of my head and I have to go out to dinner tonight so have spackled on some makeup an hope to fix my hair so it doesn't look so horrible! so I kicked and did some Breastroke but only 30' of being in the water as I hated to be a weenie but upper right arm hurt again after irritating it with backpack hauling in Guatemala I surmise. bike is in the shop for new chain and possible new cassette!!! aargh. as chain might have sanded the cassettte, who knew that I needed to change the chain more frequently? did y'all, mine is one year old.... and well ... I am gonna find out the correct mileage for new chains and will report back to you. let's just say I ride 6,000 miles per year on tri bike, then of course I need new parts and gonna find out exactly when for all parts of my bike! if you are a heavier rider, then worn out chain will make a groove but lighter riders it will sand.... hmm
  •  Hello friends

     Have been lurking.

M- there was an old thread on bike maintenance in 3.0.. Have fun on spring break!

    http://www.endurancenation.us/en_forums/showthread.php?t=2459&highlight=Bike+maintenance

    Something Coach P posted:

After serious schooling by Evil Coach Rich, I can say that...

Scrub your chain and cassette? - every Saturday

Lube your chain? - every Saturday

Change your shift and brake cables? - January every year.

Change your chain? - January every year.

Change your cassette? - January every year.

Remove BB to lube and clean it? - January every year.

    Brake pads? - as needed.

Linda H-Please, Please, Please Stand Down for the sake of your knee. Believe me i know how hard it is and how much you want to run, I have been on IR list for over a year. had to scratch all my races last year. I am finally starting a very SLOW run progression, but stop at first sign of pain/ discomfort. last fall I was not doing that and hence reinjured. I am scheduled to do IM lakePlacid and an Olympic the end of may. One day a few months ago, I really wanted to run, knew deep down I wasn't ready, posted here and Linda Patch talked me down, just what I needed ( knew deep down as well)  I waited, worked to get to bottom of knee/foot issue. Coach rich kept telling me to let my knee be  my coach. That is what you need.  Ok, I'll stop now

Yes ran with naked knees and calves today& a few times Ok when I first read about nakedness and to go back & read again. Saw naked and stopped, read again, ohhhh, naked calves.

Also got a kick out of the shaving comments. yes I agree, except for ingrown hairs. You guys get problems with that? Had one bad last spring needed antibiotics after a waxing. Been a little hesitant since. Anyone watch Grey's Anatomy- last week episode about prepping the sterile field. Anyway, I digress. i also use a desitin/A& D ointment.

Good to hear all the good work people are doing.  Had another good run walk progression today. Did 10x 1 min walk, 30 sec run. Feels good when I am running, although need to remember to use my inhaler  When i am running, seem to be going at 8:45 pace when I look at garmin. I have my eye on a 5 k for mid-april or end of april. Fingers crossed. Still try to get my energy back after haiti. Doing better, but Why am I so tired? Guess I expect to have an abundant amt of energy at all times

Ok, need to get to pool to see if i remember how to swim

Oh yeah- welcome to anyone reading for open house.

  • Oh Tracy, Tracy, Tracy, you are so DANG right! I am limping around today like a 90 year old (don't want to insult anyone in their 80's) maybe not their 90's either. I cracked up reading your "schedule" to Marianne, I have NEVER lubed my chain, OMG, I thought it was sure making a lot of noises during my long rides this weekend. I say "long" rides and then read yours MARIANNE!!! 5,000 or 6,000 a year, OMG!!!

I am so tired too, again, got into bed in the middle of the day, thank goodness I have my little doggies to snuggle up with, but I feel like a  big looser when I do that, needless to say I took the whole day off (did take my bike in to get some things worked on). OK, well I am definitely "standing down" and I am sure there are many of you out there as stubborn as me, probably not as stupid though ugggghhhh.

Super jealous of all the healthy ones, I am 56 going on my late 90's, and then I see it is mostly my own fault (I do say mostly)

  • Hi All,

Lurking, but I have been so busy!

Tracy--oh yes, I have been the antibiotic route for the same issue. Ow, ow, ow! Personally. I think being too bare down is problematic! image The chafing and the ingrowns are real risks, and they hurt like a mutha!

Be well, all! Talk to you soon!

  • Change your chain? - January every year.
Tracy, yes I have been following the bike protocol so I was surprised when my bike mechanic told me every 1200 miles for new chain. $50 so not too bad and I didnt have to replace the cassette. didn't get the $80 chain but might upgrade closer to A race, it is lighter and better but he suggested that I didn't need the $30 worth. I am a "light rider" and to be honest he knows I am a conservative $spender. Campe gearing, he suggests every 1500 miles. anyways, I pretty much clean my bike, the chain, well maybe more than 2x week but remember I rode it all year long. anyways, I don't like a black chain but am not good on disassembling my bike to really get it clean! anyways, I will continue to basically "listen" to my bike and any unusual noise or noise in general will continue to be checked out! my front wheel? well guess what didn't have the valve ringer tightened down. I have the long valve stems and at the bottom of the stem is a circle and that was loose. so ah ha. Also, I am almost due for new tires! waiting for last of drudge weather he says. well I love a new chain on my bike, it really does glide easier!
  • tracy, I finally got a bit of energy the last two days so your trip was longer and probably more demanding so don't be hard on your energy! and remember you got sick down there! horror.
  • okay so edit isn't working okay in old forum, Coach Rich on bike maintenance, one of his pet peeves is a dirty chain, he says nothing gives a tri geek away quicker and worse than a black chain! so with that admonition, it got all of us gals to do a little cleaning! and we are supposed to be wiping down our bikes to look for nicks and other stuff too! so you got in with New School, so now we are passing on our advice, learned here in EN! don't let some grit and black grease slow you down on the road!! besides the neighbors will really think you are a guru when you are out there cleaning your bike!! and btw, now most of the EN chicks carry bike lube/rags in their car too!!! yeah, now we tell ya!! I have car "wet wipes" for the quick jobs, and also an old rag and disp gloves and the KING OF GOLD, or some such... I call it the King of Rock and Roll but it is really this yellow lube.. all of that in large ziploc bag in bike stuff in my car!! that way if people show up late for a ride you just casually clean your bike or if you get rained on, you can wipe off your bike. or even better, you are too dang tired to actually ride your bike so you just go outside in the sun and clean your bike!!! you can also practice stretching by not sitting down and cleaning your bike and you can do dead lifts by leaning over to get the chain!! I don't have the Park tool that cleans your chain although have looked at it but use old toothbrushes and rags so probably a more effective way to do all of this!! and no when I started riding I didn't know I was supposed to be doing anything with my chain! shoot I was "plumb wore out" airing up my tires!!! sure was. m
  • Well, I made it across the country.  If anyone saw my FB post, yes I listened to all of the podcasts that I downloaded total of 81 EN podcasts in 44 hours.  That is a lot of RnP!  So helpful though especially as this is my first year in EN, also love the "meet the team" stuff.  The drive was uneventful mostly.  Stopped in Salt Lake City stayed the night with friends and then plowed through the rest of the country with virtually no stopping.  After 13 hours of sleep felt like a human, actually walked to the grocery store today as I could not even look at the car!  Unfortunately realizing that a lot of training gear is in the car that is being shipped so I am going to do a lot of running this week.  The bikes on the back of the car seem mostly dirty but unscathed, hopefully not too much salt got in there.  Definitely going to check out the bike mantainence thread.

@ Suzanne, you have family in Webster?  I knew some kids in high school with same last name.

  • Lurking. But had to say hi! My crazy weekend of "ironman-training-heart-of-darkness" got a bit worse on Sunday when I went out in 40 degree temps with cloudy conditions that quickly turned to 35 degree temps....shortly after my nutrition bottle ejected for the 3rd time in 4 minutes (grrrrr!!!) the snowflakes started coming down. That's when I said a bad word out loud and started pedaling as hard as I could to home. Once in the door I put my PJs back on, heated up some local CO cider, crawled under a blanket and read and napped for the remainder of the time I was supposed to be riding. And you know what??? I didn't regret it a bit!!! I figured this is what any chica would do under the circumstances....so I embraced it.

And talk about a dirty bike???? Sheesh. Mine needs some serious TLC!
  • Ok I'll ask here since I've been looking for the past 30 min and I know some smart member out here knows how to do this.  How do I change my signature at the bottom of my posts?  Thanks in advance to all of you 'smarties'

  • Carly- you must have driven your wife nuts with all of that R&P!!  Then again, some of their podcasts make me laugh out loud!

Ladies- on Bike Cleaning/Maintenance- I've become a real nut about keeping my bike clean.  So much so that my local Tri Club has recruited me to do a "Basic Bike Maintenance" Clinic for them!  Isn't that hysterical!??  ME????  Anyway- these videos from Terry Cycles is really great for showing you the basics: www.terrybicycles.com/videos

Scroll down the list and look for the ones called  "Basice Bicycle Cleaning and Lubrication"  as well as "Cleaning and Lubricating your Bike".
