Official 2014 November OS Admin & Introduction Thread

Hi gang, I thought I would start a thread for us to introduce ourselves, share what races we have coming up and perhaps how many OS this is for us.

Welcome to the 2014 November OutSeason Group!

With over 300 EN athletes participating in the November OS, this will be an unprecedented-ly awesome learning, motivation and accountability opportunity for all of you!

This is the official admin thread for the November OS. As we go we will build this thread out with admin details, messages, etc.

If you are looking for information on the actual OutSeason, you can find that pinned to the General Discussion board here.

The rest of this forum will be filled with weekly mojo and accountability threads. For example, the NovOS Week 1 Thread, or the NovOS Week 1 Bike Thread, where you'll encourage each other, hold each other accountable, and generally support each other as you build your FAST across your 14 weeks together.

Help Wanted: We are looking for a three members to serve as NovOS Captains to create and guide these weekly thread. Bang the drum, basically. You will be rewarded with gold, riches, and accollades beyond your wildest dreams (ie, it would be super groovy and we'll figure out a way to thank you!) Please PM me (Brenda) if you're interested.

Instructions for you:

  • Please join/sign into the November OS by introducing yourself by posting below. Please do so in the format below, so we can efficiently consolidate everyone into one list in this post or one of the reserved spaces below. And please post a picture and introduce yourselves! These are the people you'll be training with, virtually, for months and months so it would be great to put faces and personal stories to names and email addresses!

  • We recommend that you subscribe to this thread, using the Additional Options dealio visible when you reply to this thread when making your introduction. You'll then recieve an email when updates are made to this admin thread.
  • Finally, understand that the Coaches do not actively monitor these Training Group Forums, searching for training questions and support issues to address. That is, if you have a training related coachy-coachy question, you'll find us in the other forums and specifically in the Micro and Macro Threads!

Thanks! We look forward to seeing what fun and motivation you guys create for yourselves!

Introduction Format:

  • Picture of you
  • Name, City, State -- 1st A-race (chronological, A-races only) 2nd A-race, 3rd A-race

  • About me -- anything else you’d like to share.

To add a picture:

1) When replying to the thread be sure to use the "Add Reply" up top near the "subscribe to this topic" checkbox.

2) Below the text box where you'd post your message, there's a way to add a file. Choose your file to attach and then hit "Upload"

  • Hi!!
My name is Laura Becker, this is my first OS and I am a new member of the team so I am basically learning as I go as I jump into OS training next week!!! I am excited and nervous but overall looking forward to sharing my experiences and learning from everyone else's experiences image I plan to race Syracuse 70.3 and IMLP 2014.
  • Hi,

My name is Bob Hiller. Located near Cincinnati. I'm new to EN too. I've been doing tri's since 1983. IM in 1989 and 1997. Think it's time for another one! In 2014, Raleigh 70.3 (again) and IMMT. Looking forward to hearing how others are doing at each stage.

  • I'm David RICHMOND, live in Tahiti, French Polynesia. Second year with EN but 1st OS. Planning on learning how to train with my brand new powermeter through the OS. I am a flight attendant, flying to Tokyo, Lax, Paris, Auckland new zealand so my working schedule may get in the way of the OS schedule but hey, we all have that problem right? Looking forward to learn from and get inspired by all you.
  • Good evening all! I'm Pete Beauregard and a newbie to Team EN. I live about 30 minutes west of Boston in Sudbury, MA. This will be my first OS. I'm looking forward to getting faster, but I'm also just looking forward to start the season with Team EN. While I have done a dozen or so Tri's, I have been racing my road and mtb for the last 2-3 years. My key races this coming year are Rev 3 Quassy, and IMLP. These races will be my first tri's at the 70.3 and Ironman distances. Here's to a positive OS experience for all!
  • Hi All,

I'm back for another second NOS. Last year's NOS literally started on the exact day our house was wrecked by a giant oak tree in Hurricane Sandy. Here it is one year later and the insurance company is making us move in this weekend, right when this year's NOS starts. This whole process is totally stressing me out and it is taking all my spare time trying to finish the house. No training at all since the MightyMan Montauk HIM on September 29th. None, except for painting and carpentry I guess.

I'll get started a bit late and those first 2 tests are going to be rude awakenings. Oh well.

On a more serious note, the mojo in here pretty much saved my life last year. What I went through with the house sent me into a deep depression and some PTSD from having our house explode around us as we sat in the dark. Brenda is a great leader. She'll take good care of us.
  • @Brenda - thanks for firing this up!

Hey everyone! I am back for my 4th OS and find it hard that it has been that long! Like what Peter said above, I find the mojo the most important part of being here and it is the major reason I come back.

This year, I have "re-tooled" and gone to power on the bike. This is the final piece in my 4yr plan to get fast again before I tackle another IM. I'm looking forward to meeting you all and learning all I can from the "Wicked Smart Members" that will be with us on this Nov OS journey.
  • Hi All!  This is my second OS. Last OS was really a chance for me to learn what the OS means, and how to use the forum. It took me almost the entire OS to figure it out. I think I have it figured out now. I am looking forward to building upon this past year and get myself set up for a strong 2014. I am going to be in my first full and look forward to all of you helping me get there.

  • Hi, my name is Steve and I am addicted to endurance training.

This will be my 4th NOS but I don't know what triathlons I am racing next year yet. Definitely a non-IM year for me. I may do Timberman weekend (sprint & HIM) in August and Pumpkinman weekend (sprint & HIM) in September. But first I've got Boston to run again in April and a 100 mile canoe trip with Carole in July. May sprinkle in a few fairly local sprints for fun too.

I have not been on my bike since August, and then only 3 rides after IMLP. Been run training for my 10th MDI marathon where I PRed this past weekend. I'm expecting to have a lot of ground to make up before I get anywhere near where I was for Lake Placid for the bike. I guess I just mostly want some structure to keep me training and sane thru the winter.
  • Hi! I'm Andrés Duplat. I am from Margarita Island, Venezuela. This is my 2nd OS. My key 2014 races are Texas 70.3 and Ironman France (Nice).
Working to recover from a billateral Achilles Tendonitis since Ironman Texas 2013. Looking forward to share great experiences this OS with you!
  • This will be my second OS with the team, third overall. I did first without team support, not advised! I look forward to running faster! I just don't have any "speed" genes so it has to come in form of hard work. I'll be hoping to do at least one HIM next summer with some additional Olympic distance events. With 6 kids I haven't been able to get enough time for those long weekend rides needed for IM. It'll come in a few years though. Love the team mojo!
  • Hi all,
First OS, just joined EN, looking forward to trying this new approach to winter training. I have been doing triathlons for about 18 months, did IM Canada this year in 14:14, proud of that though I know I can go faster. 2014 I am focusing on HIM distance, doing Pacific Crest late June and Lake Stevens 70.3 in August plus maybe another in September. Hoping I can lay down a half marathon PR in January and much improve my cycling.
Look forward to doing this journey with your all,
    David
  • Hey everyone!
I'm pretty excited to get this OS started! My husband, Danny, and I train together and we had a successful 1st season with EN and IM racing (CDA and Canada). This will be our second NOS, and we're ready to work! 2014 races include (but aren't limited to) Wildflower long course, IMCDA, Lake Stevens, and maybe Leadman. We're both looking to get faster and put down some sweet PR's in 2014!
  • Hello from Rochester, NY!

I took up triathlon in 2010, the year after I turned 40. I wanted to usher in my 40's with something epic and climbing Mount Everest wasn't for me, so I did a pool tri never intending to do another, and here I am four seasons later!

I joined EN in July after listening to a podcast and felt that everything the Coaches were speaking to me when they outlined training and race execution. After joining, I followed the Beginner Sprint Plan for my last tri of the season on 9/8. I did well and felt very, very strong.

This is my first NOS and I am super psyched to be here.

My 2014 races are the Syracuse Half Marathon 3/24, Pain in the Alleganies OLY (run is 6.5) 6/22 and Peasantman Half Iron Plus (58 on the bike vs 56) 8/17.

I want to do IM in 2015 and am looking at IMWI or IMMT (thoughts / experiences welcome!).

    Cheers,
    Beth
  • This is the first OS for my wife, Melissa and I. Been doing triathlons since 2009, but joined team EN to help us get ready for IM CDA. Also doing FL 70.3 for the second time. Hoping to crush my 2012 tome.
  • howdy,  third or fourth OS?

won't be doing the plan exactly as Sunday is Cyclocross racing for a couple months.  good mixture of vo2 and ftp.     also will do some intervals during bike commuting.

AND I am swimming just to get that out there.      trying back to get some iron time that I have lost in the last couple years.

    have fun all.

  • Hi all, I am Terry Mulvey from Milton, Massachusetts. This is my first OS having joined EN in early 2013. Did my first HIM at Timberman in August two weeks shy of my 55th birthday and exceeded my wildest expectations after training with EN for 5 months. I am enjoying the diverse ages, abilities and enthusiasm of all of the ENers as I learn more about long distance training. This year will be difficult as my husband is living with an advanced and incurable cancer. I found training difficult after his diagnosis in July but quickly realized how important it was to have a goal for myself while supporting others. Seeing his joy as well as that of our three daughters as I crossed the finish line was truly life changing.

For 2014 I am planning Rev3 Quassy and Timberman again. If all goes well, I hope to do IMLP or IMMT in 2015.

Quick question for those more experienced...what is the minimum equipment I can get by with to use trainer road? Just bought a new tribike and looking for a cost effective way to use the system. Thanks!
  • @Terry Trainer Road is fantastic. I believe the minimum needed is a trainer and a speed/cadence sensor. You may want to add a heart rate monitor. They now have a yearly plan instead of just the monthly fee. There is good info in the Wiki on TR. I use it in combination with the Sufferfest video Rubberglove for my FTP test.

  • Hello Everyone,

Greetings from Toronto, where it is sunny and a crisp 39 degrees.

This is my first month with EN. This will also be my first OS. I am recovering from a nasty bike crash in August (broken collar bone, 6 fractured ribs and a concussion) so need to make up some fitness. Coach Rich has had me on the Bike Focus plan the last few weeks. Everything is moving in the right direction. The EN team approach for OS will take it to the next level!!

My "A" race for 2014 is IMLP in AG 50-54 - my first full ironman. I will also be attending the EN LP Training Camp in June. All very exciting!!

Look forward to meeting you all virtually and hopefully in person too.

    Best,

    Bill

  • Hi November OS members!

It's my first season here at EN, and I am excited to be here.  I may be starting the OS slightly behind you all as I have been modifying the RD plan with Coach P for a glute med injury I have, but I strive to suffer with all of you soon.  (I can't help it that I have a lazy butt ). I had been thinking about not starting until January, but listening to the video of the week 3 welcome, I am really hooked into the idea of laying down the fast, then far and seeing where it will take me.  My family and I just uprooted from Colorado and moved across the country to MI for my husband's work, and it's been a giant change. I have a feeling that this year will be a unique opportunity in terms of life circumstances to figure out how to become an endurance racer.

I plan to race at Rev3 Wisconsin Dells, Age Group Nationals, and Muskoka 70.3  Not sure if anyone has ever been to Muskoka here, but I would love to know about your experience if you have. Susan

  • Greetings from Danville, California (45 minutes east of San Francisco).  I am John Stark and this will be my 4th OS, I think?  Been a member since October 2008.

I was *retired* from triathlon after IM Arizona in 2011.  I found out one month before that race that my left knee was done.  Needless to say, it was a long day in Tempe.  After selling my tri bike, acting as your EN Race Director, and doing absolutely NOTHING exercise-wise for almost 2 years I got the IM bug again.  So . . . . I signed up for IM Texas 2014 and it is all Tom Glynn's fault!!!

    OS Goals:

1 - Build bike and swim over winter.

2 - Do frequency running (minimal intervals) through OS so I don't put too much stress on my knee.

3 - Work more on body comp to bring up my w/kg.

4 - Cheer all you rock stars on!

    Let's get this party started!!!

    John

  • I am getting a power meter from Rich soon.  so that means i won't need trainer road, right?

  • Trainer Road works so much better with a power meter that communicates on the ANT+ protocol. Now you're cookin' with gas.
  • Hi everyone, my name is Debbie van der Sanden from Aurora, Colorado.  My first A race will be Boulder Ironman 70.3 and my second will be Ironman Boulder next August.  My OS goals are to stick to the plan and to increase my speed.  I am new to Endurance Nation and I'm really excited to start training.  I've done a number of half IMs and other distance tris, and this will be my 2nd full IM.  I've had a hard time keeping motivated since my first IM in 2009, so I have a long way to go to rebuild my fitness, but it feels like this is the year I get it back!

    [EDITED]

    Hi Robert:

The short answer to your question is no, you do not need TR.  Back in the day we "vets" used to use just our power tap CPU's during workouts and it worked just fine. The benefit to TR is the visual aspect on the screen.  A really nice to have, but not mandatory if it is a budget or technical constraint.

    Rock on, brotha!

    John

P.S. I want to be Peter "PR" Wick when I grow up!  Look at that sig line.  BOOM!

  • Greetings from Kansas City!

This is my 2nd OS! I have only run three times and cycled once since IMLou. I've still be very active in my 6+ weeks off

I am very exciting to get back in the groove. So far my calendar is Galveston 70.3 and Kansas 70.3 Like others, this is a non-IM year for me. I will also sprinkle in a few sprints in the area if I manage to get signed up for them!

    Happy Training!
  • Hello Everyone, My name is Mark Lane, I just joined EN, so this is my first O.S. I live in Colonial Heights, Va. just outside of Richmond. I've been doing triathlons about five years, and I'm really looking forward to doing it "right." My A races are Quassy 1/2 and IM Louisville, which will be my first full.
  • Greetings from Wisconsin - Tim Stajkowski here and I live in a small rural western WI Village of Pepin. I'm new to EN so, this is my first NOS. Looking forward to getting fitter/faster and creating new friendships with all of you. I plan on doing several local Sprints this season and Racine this summer.

    Cheers!
  • Hi All-

I'm Brad Marcus from Ridgefield, Connecticut. I'll soon be coming up on my 1 year anniversary as part of the EN team. This past season I learned a ton from all the talented folks here and look forward to soaking up more! This was my 3rd year in the sport and I raced two 70.3's this season (and a handful of shorter races).

Next year I will be racing IMLP - my first full. I'm stoked after volunteering there this Summer and being totally inspired by what I saw. I also plan to race Quassy 70.3 leading up Placid and may sprinkle in a couple local races too.

Last OS really helped my run come together and I plan to make strides on the bike this year and also focus on my nutrition. For you new folks, the OS was a game changer for me in terms of how I viewed training. The work was hard, but it was great to see the results.

Good training to everyone and I look forward to learning a bunch!
