  • Hi All.

My name is Mike Dreyer and I am from Brookline, NH.   I am new to EN this year, thankful for Larry Rodman's referral,  and am looking forward to a successful Outseason!

I completed my first 70.3, the Patriot Half, last year in 6:42, and am looking forward to completing at least two 70.3s next year.  There is lots of room for improvement!

The picture below is of my family and I running the last 100 feet of the Patriot Half.

I am still in the final decision process between Rev3 Quassy and the Patriot Half as my first race of the season, and am looking in late June or Mid-August for my second.

I know it doesn't count until I sign up :-)  I should be pulling the trigger soon.  I know that Rev3 Quassy is an EN team event, but I keep thinking that I'd like to come back to Patriot Half and crush my previous time.

As far as goals, I'd like to finish a 70.3 in less than 6 hours and at a race weight at or under 195. I like to keep challenging my own personal limits.  I may not see a podium, but there is something to be said for measured self improvement year over year.

I have similar challenges and constraints that some of you have or are dealing with, such as regular business travel, extra weight, and balancing family/work/fitness goals.

I'm looking forward to grinding it out with all of you!

    Mike

  • Robert,

Unfortunately, I decided that I did not want to walk the entire 13.1 miles so I  turned around on Hillsborough Road just past NC State.  It was my first half and trained through EN for the first time.  Hopefully, next year will be better.  The two loops will much better for spectators and support as well as hill avoidance.

  • Mandy,

I live in Wake Forest, NC. I had a blast training and participating in Raleigh 70.3.  Definitely, looking forward to next year.

  • Hi!  I didn"t know you joined the November group.  How's your new bike?  Talk later. Jackie

  • Hi All,

I'm Kevin Hill and an international member of EN - was in Singapore, now for last 12 months am living in Dubai in the UAE.

Am doing Abu Dhabi "Short" Distance in March (1.5km/100km/10km) then on to Challenge Roth in July. This will be my fourth OS with EN so goals are to lift my run VDot mainly and get back my bike FTP.

I actually started my OS a month early (please don't tell the coaches) as I needed a longer time between end of OS and first race in March. In previous years have had around 6 weeks between OS and racing and found not enough so this time have extended to 9 weeks (1 week trans and 8 week block) so will see how that works for me.

Oh - here's my pain cave, winter in the desert is actually quite nice image

  • Keith,  although my last name is Hiller, that didn't help me at Raleigh.  I'm convinced with EN's guidance and the change in course, we'll all do well next June!  Bob

  • Spent 12 hours at the Dubai airport a year ago, layover to the Maldives. It was like being in an exclusive mall, with jets parked outside. Never made it into the city, someday.

Your pain cave looks like it would be a blast to ride in. One day...

So happy to be back! Just came off my 2 mo hold today. Looking forward to all the mojo and fun!!

  • Molly-

Using the crazy weather tonight to catch up on the forums...I am often up in the Kensington/Island Lake area riding my bike, so we'll have to meet up sometime in the spring!

I have only done one tri in MI as we moved here in late July and was just trying to get the lay of the land- the last Trex sold out before I could reg, but I hope to be able to be properly prepared to sign up for next summer.  Another team member had told me about Raleigh, but we just won't be able to swing it as a family this year as it conflicts with another trip...

I saw your computrainer question- what did you decide to do?

  • SO happy to get your message! Looking forward to meeting up, maybe get some runs/swimming in this OS!
  • Good Morning everyone!

This is my first OS (week 4).  I've never actually done a tri.  I'm a road/mountain bike racer. A friend who is an EN member and multiple IM racer talked me into this.  On top of that my husband is having a midlife crisis and thinks he's 18 again. Actually 44. We're going to do the Tri in the Grove in Cottage grove, Oregon. We're shopping around for a couple more for next year.  Anyone from the Northwest have any suggestions?  My goal is to get faster, stronger, smarter and leaner. Having fun so far. Pain and suffering is not a problem.  LOVE the challenge of the head game.

My 9 year old thinks this is a blast!  She's very understanding and supportive of my sweat and suffering.I'm being very cautious about the running because I have had several injuries to my right ankle.  So far so good.  My husband is loving all the shopping and research.  We make a great team.  I go "honey I think I need XYZ." and he goes "ok, i'll research it." I have to be careful about what I mention.

    Have a wonderful day!

"Today i'm going to be as happy as a bird with a french fry."

  • Hi Jacklyn,
I live up in Corvallis. Two years ago my kids did the Eugene Triathlon, I never raced it, but the organization was great and it is a nice quite area. It might be a good one for you. I also recommend Best in the West in September. It is a great local style event. There are quite a lot of races around the Portland area. Hagg Lake is a good one.
I am planning on doing Pacific Crest Long Course, Lake Stevens 70.3 and maybe Best in the West or Leadman 125.
Good to have another NW'er here,
    David
  • David,

Thank you for the shopping list. I will forward it to my personal shopper aka husband.  I hope we can run into each other some time.  Do you know anything about the Eugene Running Company?  Good place to go for a newbie?

Have a good day and thanks again.

    Jacklyn

  • Hi Jacklyn,

I second the Best in the West triathlon series. My wife and I did the half-iron distance there last year and it was really fun and well run. I would say that it's one of the better run triathlons that we've ever done. I don't know how far afield you want to go but there are others worth considering. We've done the Napa Vintage Half-iron triathlon which is in early May. They have olympic and sprint distance races as well and the added advantage is you get to go to Napa Valley in May. If you want to go north there is the Ocean Shores tri festival in July in Ocean Shores, WA. Even further north is the Subaru Western Triathlon Series http://www.triseries.ca/ and they put on excellent races as well. So many races so little time.

The Black Hills Triathlon returned from a hiatus last year as a sprint distance triathlon in Lacey, WA. I didn't do it since i was out of the country but it got good reviews. Another Washington triathlon that I've heard good things about is the Lake Meridian triathlon. If you ever get a hankering to do a half iron or an iron distance race the Vineman series in Sonoma county is a really good race.

    Cheers,

    Mark

  • Thank you for the information.  Love it!  We have no problem going far afield for a good adventure.

    Stay warm, Jacklyn

  • You too. My daughter lives in Grants Pass and has friends in Roseburg. We're heading down there for thanksgiving and will be dining with her friends in Roseburg on T-day. She's a triathlete too and is going to do her first half-iron next year. She's doing Barb's race which is a women's only half-iron on the same day and course as the full Vineman. My wife and I are doing the latter so we'll get to cheer each other on in passing.
  • Nice!  I have to work Thanksgiving.  Have a safe trip. It is absolutely beautiful along the Umpqua river right now.

    Thank you for your advice.

    Jacklyn

  • Hi - Late introduction.  My name is Jim Van Atta.  I'm currently living in El Paso/Ft. Bliss, TX with the US Army.  I've been a little inactive with EN the last few years.  Used Rich's Crucible programs right before he opened EN, had two GREAT Ironman races in 2006 and 2007, training about half the total volume of past seasons with equal or better results. Transitioned to EN when it came online, but have deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan 3 times 2007 with two ankle surgeries during my non-deployed years; unable to race since then. I've completed 1 OutSeason, but didn't race that year.  Attempted another OutSeason with a deployment cutting me short.  Really looking to train consistently for the next 8 months until racing next summer.  Hope to use this season to springboard a return to racing and call myself a triathlete again!!  Need to make a body comp change with lots of extra muscle and some fat built up over the last few years with my focus on strength, not endurance.

Only A-Race this year is Buffalo Springs on 29 June.  Might do a race in May as a rehearsal if Army work gives me time.

OS Goals: Regain ability to train consistently.  Relearn how to train smart using EN methods. Improve fitness level using W/KG as primary measure.  Current Stats: W/KG = 2.06 (219W/106kg), VDOT = 36.8, End of OS Goal: W/KG = 2.6 (260W/98Kg), VDOT = 42

I'm using 2014 OS Beginner plan.  I have to mix it with Army fitness training and some strength work we're required to do so chose the Beginner plan to make sure I don't overdo it.  Also will do one of the runs each week in the pool (aqua jog with heart rate monitor) to decrease impact on my bad ankle.  I've completed first 4 weeks mixing Army fitness with EN OS workouts; going OK so far.

Looking forward to being on the team again.

    Jim

  • @Jim: We are USMA classmates.  Say hi to the other 96 guys at Bliss for me.  Looking forward to hearing more about your IM progress this year...

  • Welcome back, Jim, and than you for serving our country.

  • Question? Coach R moved from November OS to the run durability plan #1. Can I stay in this forum or do I need to move? Have a great holiday everyone.

  • @Jacklyn -- I say stick around!! The OS mojo is invaluable and you won't find it anywhere else (even in other EN forums)
  • Thank you. I've noticed that. I didn't know if it was P.C or not.  Happy holidays.

  • Missed the first month of OS but have kept myself fit and ready to join in to this assume group. Let's see if I can keep up
  • Rich - Great to find a classmate on EN! Looks like your training is going well from your other posts.

    Jim
  • Thanks Terra. Love to serve. Gives me a forced reason to stay physically fit!
  • Looks like there is a few of us 96'ers here with EN.
Just did my first Ironman in Arizona about 2 weeks back.

  • Wow! We have snow.  I haven't seen snow in Roseburg in 2 years.  My daughter is going nuts. She was up at 0630 to build a snowman.   We just got back from sledding.  Our sled died. What a lovely day off.  Pork roast in the crock pot, applesauce cooking on the stove, fire in the fireplace. My life ROCKS! Only thing that would make it better is if I could go run in the snow.  Oh well.  I hope everyone is enjoying their day. Jacklyn

  • Send your daughter out here to MN. We have loads of snow. Just be sure to dress her warm - it's -1F here now, up from -14F on Saturday!
