  • @ Tom - I think you right click on your name in PA and manually enter your power numbers. What I did was just guess on the peak power numbers then entered my FTP then hit generate. Then you click on configure device and it will move that to the Joule.

@Pam - No one here is laughing! As for the peak power numbers I just guessed. For me I figured, "How much power do I think I could hold for 4 minutes?" I don't know, maybe 300 (though it's probably less) so that's what I entered. Then I asked, "how much power could I hold for 30 minutes?" Probably like 240 since my 235 was based on a 42 minute test. So those are the numbers I entered. Again, no math, just pulled the #'s out my arse. Hell, I don't even know if any of those numbers matter since I don't believe they contribute to any calculations. I think they might mean something to cycling types but don't really know (or care). I'm not sure why you are having trouble with Joule but it seems to me like PA is OK since numbers download correctly. I would try putting in the numbers then clicking on the configure device button. As long as the Joule is connected you should get a message that the configuring occured then you should be good to go.
  • Hi All:

Just got my Joule 2.0 today.  Installed PA 7.5 and it recognizes the Joule.  However, when I try and do the firmware update I get an error (Java script kinda thing) and it tells me to close the software.

I am running Win7 with 64 bit processor.  I see there is a compatibilty issue with Mac 64 bit, but I don't see anything about Win 7 and 64 bit.  Any help is appreciated.

    John

  • John, did you download the software or use the disk provided? I've got 7.5.1.10
  • Ya.  Didn't have PA on this machine until I installed 7.5.0.x that came on the CD with the device.  So I uninstalled and installed poweragent_7.5.1.10_win32 and still get the error.

Gonna install PA on my W7 32 Bit machine now and see if it works better.

  • Called Saris today and they are going to try and figure out my issue.  They ROCK!  I sent them the data file for the error.  Probably an issue on my side as I have my machine pretty locked down.  We shall see.

But I have to tell ya the Joule is AWESOME!  But I can also tell that it will be the STICK for every ride from here forward.  Seeing real-time IF is a blessing and a curse.  Chased Tom today for a bit and the first half of the ride I was at a tasty .911 IF.  By the time I was done it fell back to .852.  Still a good ride, but was mentally hard seeing IF tick down.  Legs were shelled.  Sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

I am glad I bought it.  A nice tool to manage my rides better.

Here is the latest PA rev:  http://www.saris.com/software/compo..._win32.exe  They sent it to me today to see if it would fix my issue.  But it is not on the site yet, I guess.

  • So, to avoid all of the MAC issues, I purchased a netbook with WIN7 to run WKO 3.0. I have downloaded all the appropriate things, i.e., device agent, power agent.

Now, THE SAME THING is occuring when I drag my files into WKO 3.0. IT CRASHES!!

I am creating a pwx file in PA(from Joule)> moving it to desktop> dragging it into 3.0> and CRASH!!

I know this should work, because it has before.

    Help, please!!

  • hello, i have a speed sensor question.

way back i read on this thread that a saris speed sensor would work with quarq. did that ever work for anyone?  i bought one in anticipation of receiving my quarq.  i tried using it today and the speed sensor is not being detected.

by now, seems all new firmwares are in place to support other speed sensors that are ANT+.

does the Garmin speed sensor Ant + work now?  If not what works?

    thanks!

    g

  • Gilberto,

The speed sensor is originally programed via a small switch inside under the battery to be a cadence sensor. You have to remove the battery and change the switch setting. See if that helps.

I have not tried my Garmin speed sensor since I upgraded my firmware so I cannot offer feedback on that.

Report back to let us know if it works.

  • Joule and distance error.

I rode today with 2 others that ride with Garmins and I also had my Garmin 705 onboard with the Joule. My bike looked like a total geek setup. I did a rollout measurement of my rear tire while sitting on the bike and having aired the tire to 110 psi. It measured 2086 mm in circumference. I set up the joule with that measurement.

My joule reads about 10% high/long compared to the Garmins. I cannot imagine I need to set the tire circumference to 1877 mm (it's a Specialized Open Tubular 700x23).

Has anyone else had a distance error? This also effects the TSS score btw.

    Vince
  • Yes, i switched to speed mode before trying to pair.  I followed all instructions and have all the latest versions of all the software.

Vince, which speed sensor are you using?

I tried both sides of the fork, the logo side of the sensor facing the magnet.  high up on the fork and low.  the only thing different was the magnet.  the provided magnet does not fit on my blade spokes.  maybe i'll try the provided magnet, as best i can fit it to the bladed spokes, but i doubt that should make a difference.

if no one is using the cycleops speed sensor, then i will assume it has to be an ant+ version speed sensor.

    thanks!

    g

  • ok! got it to work!

i am embarassed to say that i think i did not close the lid on the sensor properly after switching the speed switch.

interstingly, when i looked at the wireless setup on my laptop, i noticed the joule had registered my firend's (who rode with me today) polar HR strap and it was not an ant+ strap.  so, makes me think maybe my polar strap will pair with the joule.  i will let you all know if it works.  i hope so, because it'll save me 70.00 bucks!

    thanks vince, for the assistance.

  •  Vince,

Been having the same issue since last Saturday night when I upgraded the firmware to 14.060

Have done 5 rides each compared to my Garmin GPS of varying distances and find the offset to be somewhere between 10-11%. The funny thing is that my speeds match up perfectly during the rides and so do my avg speeds. Yesterday I also checked at different stages of the ride and found the following:

60 minute mark (GPS and Joule showed 19.8 avg speed with GPS showing 19.8 miles) but Joule read 21.8 miles distance

120 mins 19.7 avg on both but Joule read 44.1 miles distance

180 mins 19.5 avg on both but Joule read 67.2 miles distance

240 mins 10.5 avg on both but Joule read 88.1 miles distance

This morning at the 60 minute mark I was dead on at 20.05 miles on GPS with both showing 20.0 avg but the Joule showed 22.1 total distance.

I called Saris earlier this week and they had my deleting and re-adding the Speed sensor to the Joule (pairing), rolling out my tire to check on circumference, and anything else they could think of.

I emailed them this data this morning and hopefully will hear back soon. I would recommend that you call them and also email (ealbers@saris.com) so they can see that we aren't the only ones out there.

Should you find a solution please let me know-this is driving the numbers geek in me crazy

  • Hi all - still having issues getting my Joule display to show accurate IF/TSS. I've hacked the PA User to show my correct FTP (just played around with the figures until I got the right FTP) - the PA is correct but the cpu is still using the default 250w.
Only way I can see to synch the PA & cpu is by using the 'configure device' tab in PA - appears to go through the process but doesn't update - can you also change on the cpu?

I'm probably missing something! Says I have the updates firmware.

    Thanks,
    Dave
  • DAvid, i downloaded the firmware link that someone on this thread provided a few days ago.  that allowed me to enter my FT and everything is working great.

    good luck.

  • David,

works for me. I'm running PA 7.5.1. Click on the first icon, "edit user". Second tab is power zones. Fill in the "Functional Threshold Power (FTP)" and click OK. Connect the Joule to the computer and click on the third icon, "configure device". This should update your Joule with the new FTP number.

  • Hi Tom, been doing that but no luck - perhaps I'll reload PA again and start with new User.
    Thanks, dave
  • Hi All:

Just to close the loop on my Win7 64 bit issue below.  Looks like it is a 64 bit issue with Apple PC's (already noted) and Windows PC's.

Tom, will take you up on your machine for the update when I get back from vacation.

    John

    John,

Unfortunately it's an error with having a 64bit computer, we are aware of it and working on the fix. If you have access to installing the beta version on a non 64bit computer for the purpose of updating the Joule, it will work.

  • Here is a link to a pretty comprehensive review of the Joule.  I learned a couple of things that I had missed in reading through the manual and using the Joule for a while now.

  • FINALLY!!! (from Wattage Groups)

    Announcing: Joule Compatibility with WKO+

It's taken longer than we would have liked, but check it out!

Go and download the latest device agent build 33 AND WKO+ build 46, for bug fixes and Joule Compatibility.
  • Here is the link to downloading the latest version of WKO+ that Gina discussed:

    https://home.trainingpeaks.com/wko-desktop-software/download.aspx
  • Any reason I do NOT want one?
  • I haven't been able to update the firmware for the Joule 2.0 on my Windows 7 64-bit machine because the PowerAgent will not start when I execute it. and when I installed PA on my Windows XP 32-bit box (or my laptop) I get an "Error connecting to the firmware server." when I try to update the firmware using the Tools menu in PowerAgent 7.5.0.30. Not impressed so far and I haven't even gotten started. Beta?
  • I just downloaded the latest version of Device Agent. It directly downloads form the Joule. It also pulls elevation and temperature data, which I wasn't getting from PA to WKO. Looks like they have the 305 in there too. I'll try that direct download shortly.

    tom
  • That's good, however unless I'm missing something the only way you can update the firmware in the Joule 2.0 is to do it from inside PA on the Tools menu. I went to Saris' website where you could update your firmware and a note says that you now have to update the firmware via PowerAgent.

    G'day Tom,

I'm 100% that my hacked FTP in PA 'power zones' isn't configuring then to the Joule - thats despite going through the configure settings.

When I download a ride into PA - bring up the ride analysis & click the 'work' tab - the FTP is showing 250 even though the power zone is showing 300 (my FTP).

Does your FTP show in 'Work' tab?  When I manually change the FTP within 'work' the rest of the figures change to correspond with the new FTP.

Be great if you can check - or anyone else in the Haus.

    Thanks.

    Dave

  • Dave,

just checked , and yes, my FTP shows up on the "work" tab
  • @Glynn - thanks buddy - so, you have 'hacked' power-zones to get correct FTP / and Work tab FTP shows correct FTP AND Joule configures OK. I'll have to go back and reload everything again, looks like a firmware glitch. Thanks again!
    Dave
  • Craig Watson,

I have been offline doing life and I emailed Saris. They didn't have a solution so I just set the circumference to 1866 mm this weekend. I will continue to tweak it as I want the IF and TSS for Vineman and the RR upcoming to determine a mph avg along with my wattage.

    Tom and All

Downloaded the latest and it now has a place to put in FTP which is great.  My question is what do you have for max 4 min and 30 min?  Also do those numbers matter in terms of what the device will show in terms of TSS?

I think having the Joule is going to be awesome!

  • Chris,
I went to WKO to get those numbers. I cannot remember which screen but I think it is the mean maximal power chart. You just run the pointer/cursor over the graphed line at the appropriate duration and your wattage (and date achieved) will pop up. I customized the timeframe within a couple months to get current data. Keep in mind that the 4 min datapoint is not norm wattage as that conversion only occurs after 5 mins. The 30 min timeframe I pulled by customizing the chart to Norm Wattage instead of mean maximal (I think those were some of the options).

All in all, I'm not sure those are important if you know your FTP as the 4 min and 30 min are used by PA to figure your FTP I believe. I'd rather just plug in my FTP and reduce the variables.
