  • Whoops!. Just added more columns to the spreadsheet! We are up to 12/31 now. Will tally through Dec, crown a Dec Champion and then we'll restart the next stage on Jan 1st.

Hats on the way! [Had a last minute color change, so it will be olive with black letters and black trim, rather than gray].
  • Hey Kevin, is it too late to join in on the fun? I think the Pennsylvania winter still has a lot of bite left so I can use all the motivation I can get... ;-)

Definitely, join in at any time! Just add your name to the spreadsheet and start tracking points! We will restart a separate january point tally for new folks so late comers can compete and put their weather hardiness up against the rest!

    Spreadsheet is here.

  • FYI - I adjusted the sheet so the point totals account for all the days in the month. Hope this s ok with you Kevin.

Oh yeah - it's freezing here finally put a few points on the board today.
  • Wow- 7 degrees! COLD!
running tights under fleece lined wind pants, thermal with jacket and then wind jacket over, duct taped shoes, 2 pairs gloves, hat and neck gator. I was cold when I started warmed to comfortable over 1.5 miles, then was toasty trying to hit TP. With so many layers, I felt like I was running slow, but managed to hit TP for 2 miles total.
Took serious mental run fu to get going.
  • So- I did my best to add a January page to the challenge spreadsheet. Unfortunately I cannot remember how to get that the points to add up automatically across the month for each person. A WSM needs to fix things.

    Thoroughly enjoyed today's run.
  • Was out riding mtb this morning to start the new year. There was snowman-making snow out there = sticky (to cleats making clipping in challenging) and slippery. I'm getting good at muscling my sliding back wheel around. Woohoo!

Good Start. I put on a few more days and added points total calculation.
  • Much thanks for updating spreadsheet! I am pulling the call duty for this weekend and true to form folks have been drunk and stupid, ensuring my gainful employment for another year.

    What do you do Kevin?
  • Five miles today. Been slacking a bit since my son had his tonsils/adenoids out on Tuesday - he's only 6 and having a rough time of it. So far I haven't told him I had mine out under local anesthetic - though I did tell every nurse that came in the room while he was sleeping just to see the look on his face. (BTW, I don't reccomend the local route).

Anyway, got outdoor runs in yesterday and today. Today's was the coldest-feeling so far. There's no way the windchill was only 2 below - had to be in the negative teens. Here's my picture pre-run bundled up:
    image

I have on tights under windpants (though I forgot the handwarmer insert which was a mistake). On top I have shirt/underarmor turtleneck/bright yellow windbreaker. And covering 80% of viewing area is the balaclava, the lifesaver for windy runs. Hands stay warm due to goofy mitten/glove combo. Who says you can't stay warm and look fashionable at the same time? image

    Happy New Year all!
  • Back to back 5K's-run into the New Year on the 31st at noon and a Champange Chase on the 1st at 9a.m.. The noon run had 1200 runners in 20 degree weather, and the Chase on the 1st had 300 runners in 5 degree weather-what a difference a day can make. I actually ran better on the first-go figure
    Happy New Year

I'm a neurosurgeon at the University of Rochester. My subspecialty interest is neuro-oncology, but I'm also one of the main trauma folks.
  • Sweet picture! Love the glove/mitten combo!
  • @Big Bry: I have the glove/ mitten combo, but my glove is full finger. Got them at REI about 2 or 3 years back. They are awesome and I can press buttons, etc with glove portion. However, at the temps you describe, I usually go with lobster claw gloves with a glove liner underneath so that if I take off outer glove I am still partially protected. Otherwise, except for the warmer in the front of the pants image I dress the same.
  • Does x-country skiing count? I haven't run much lately, but not due to cold. I'm doing a 50K ski race in 7 weeks, and I just started skiing (as in learning how) a couple of weeks ago. I think I racked up ~7 hours @ <15 degrees including almost an hour yesterday at -10. I haven't put anything in the spreadsheet, but I'll try to get my points in there.
  • I'm going to go ahead and give in on the cross country ski points, okay to count'em. [Though it is hard to ski when its not cold!]
  • Glad we are going to count xc skiing-I did hill repeats today on a hill we call the Gut buster, the down hill side is the sweet reward. I will run outside tomorrow promise
  • Did some TP intervals. It was 19 degrees and dark for tthe first half. I always think I want a treadmill until I am out there in the quiet and enjoying my run.
  • Snowy trail run with the screw shoes last night---it's time to bust out the snowshoes!
Today, I tried skate skiing for the first time. Way more fun and fast than classic xc skiing---but a real a$$-kicker for sure! I cried Uncle! after an hour (gotta rest up for that Sat ride). Looks like I'm going to buy new skis...image
  • Very cool! I am reacquainting myself with the forum after a 6-month hiatus (still working out, but just not racing and busy as heck with family and work.) Reentered the EN mojo with the winter run challenge (8 days, 65 points), and surfing the new forums for info and more mojo - This challenge rocks!
I'm a wuss and won't try for tundra points on my bike - any threads or challenges to help me in my weak spot - trainer riding? I HATE my trainer! Just started Jan OS, and it wasn't the FTP test itself that was hard, it was that isolated torture chamber and trying to keep going on the trainer!

  • snow shoeing for a couple of hours today, temps topped out at 5, but I had the whole park to myself. Anyone ever tried those yak tracks? I am thinking I might need some so I can run in this weather.

Sheryl- I use them and love them. Lots of folks put screws in the shoes. Whatever works for you. I have Yak Trax Pros, have used them for years, no problems except I wear them out.
  • I have run in colder temps. It was 25 today, but it just felt so much colder for some reason. But it was dry and sunny, so I just kept going. I'm not racking up huge points, but I get something.

I don't really like the Yak Tracks for snow deeper than 2 inches deep. I've screwed sheet metal screws into the bottom of shoes which has worked out great (#8 x 1/2 inch hex sheet metal screws--anything longer will poke through.)
Katoolah makes microspikes that work well in deeper snow: http://www.kahtoola.com/microspikes.php

For deep snow on trails, try running snow shoes. I've tried just about every brand out there and my favorite by a huge margin is Dion's. http://www.dionsnowshoes.com/ I had a pair of running shoes bolted to mine so I wouldn't have to deal with the straps.
  • thanks-this will help alot. I really like the idea of bolting the running shoes into the snowshoes. I am doing a Quadrathon in a month and have to transition running-biking-snow shoe-ski. The more I can do without changing shoes the better
  • I use the regular Yak-trax - already had them for walking around the icy areas at my buddy's mt. snow house - but I have not been in extreme conditions with them.

I'd love to see a photo of someone's running shoes with the screws in them.
  • Google "screw shoes"

Took Pictures, but just relearning the forum ... Posted on my FB page - Friend me: Mike Biarnesen, or try these links: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3253150&l=917b67ef43&id=737822997, and http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3253150&l=917b67ef43&id=737822997
