  • Annabelle is an excellent name. I really like it.

Gina and Robin -- I'd love to try out your stash o' saddles. Let me know about shipping, etc.

Suzanne and Nemo -- I have a pink Adamo Race that I will happily send to anyone.

Should we just invite John Cobb to women's camp?

My belly is full of delicious Dutch cheese and red lentil and pastina soup. It is one of my favorite, easy recipes and does all the things chicken soup is supposed to do -- but better. Mmmm. And a disc of Tudors awaits me. Which is also, mmm. Well, except for the war parts. There's been serious gorging on movies this week. But that's what January is for? Movies and soup?

  • Beth- PM me your address and I will send the saddles your way. Trade you for your soup recipe!

Linda- I have read Leerburg's articles you mentioned. Indie will be fine, she is good with other dogs. I think it is Mommie that is feeling guilty! Glad you had a good time ;BC.

Kit- Yep, it was definitely a fem-cleveland bypass. Non-compliant, s/p ax-fem and a laundry list of other revascularizations, ischemic from hip-toes. 9 hours yesterday and he was back in the OR today. (Thankfully, I wasn't!)

Michele- Ante up with some pics of the ride!!

    G'night all!

  • Beth- I'll have to pass on the pink Adamo. Hobbs would look like an easter egg if I put a pink seat on him! But I love that idea of inviting John Cobb to the Cowgirl Camp! Wouldn't that be awesome!!

Raining sideways here today! It's a good day to make a second pot of coffee!
  • Princess is still at the shop until I decide on a saddle. Probably get her next week.
Raining here too! But it is warm!!! 50+ degrees. I LOVE IT!

@Beth- Can you post the red lentil and pastina recipe. Sounds AWESOME! In college, at times when others lived off Ramen, I lived off pastina and chicken broth.

    Back to work....
  • Linda have a good vacay!!! thru Wednesday that should bode you well. okay I got some new songs.... this should bring a smile to y'alls faces and movement to your feet!! it did mine... okay so there I was outside by the river... I let the dog run off leash cuz it got cold again here and nobody was out... he ran alongside the water's edge chasing the ducks and hopping in the water so he was all wet and muddy... yuck but his tongue was hanging and he was exuberant!! he looked back to see me sorta running alongside the grass!! "why mom is back!" and he ran back to congratulate me!! and then ran forwards looking out into the water wondering if those ducks would ever come his way as they were quacking at him! I ran about 15' on the soft muddy grass back and forth so that Rudy would stay close to me and did some drills, high knees, grapevine, backwards running, hops, skips and generally staying warm and the wind either blew my hair all in my face or I was hitting it head on.. couldn't decide which was better! but the sun was out and blue skies!

  • @ Beth, can I try the pink Adamo? As much as I'm embarrassed by my pink tri bike...the matching color is appealing.
  • Beth - just send PM me your address and I will send them your way!

I think I'll try the Blackwell Flow next - thanks for the suggestion Gina.

Finally! After a week of hassle and 3 trips to Wal Mart for the correct router I have wireless!!! Hubby backed into my car yesterday so am getting estimates to repair it and doing other errands today. Amazing how fast 2K worth of damage can be done in your own driveway - as long as it wasn't a dog or child - no biggie though - just inconvenient. That and I discovered that they tore up the electric fence last year while doing some landscaping so have to throw some money at that too - lest Esther get her pretty little head kicked in while eating horse poop in the field she's not allowed to be in. Time to train that girl! - to the fence that is ;-)
  •  Wow....the 3 x 15  @ 100% just about killed me.  I then drove to the fitness center and ran 25 minutes on the dreadmill (cut short by 20 minutes).   What is wrong with my legs????

OK...medical people in the Chicka Haus.....my 17 year old has what we suspect is celiac disease.  We had her tested but the testing was inconclusive since she was completely off gluten at the time of the testing.  So...now...everything makes her ill.  Everything she eats nearly.  It's not that "Oh my word....I hope my teenage daughter isn't pregnant" kind of sick but instant in the bathroom symptoms.  Severe stomach ache, diareah (sic). Anyway, I made another appointment to have her seen at Minnesota Gastro clinic but what do you guys think?  It's getting so frustrating.  She can eat eggs, cheese and yogurt and rice that we know of.  This morning she ate Bob's Red Mill GF oatmeal and had an instant horrible reaction.  The bag states "Gluten free, wheat free and dairy free."  Does this sound like Crohns???  Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

  • Sheryl- my hubby has Crohns. For your daughter's sake, I sure hope that isn't it. His symptoms are currently managed through medication, however there are still some foods that will make things worse. His symptoms however aren't immediate reactions like what you are describing. His are more of a delayed reaction sort of thing. He was about your daughter's age (maybe even a little younger) when first diagnosed and I didn't know him back then- so I'm not as familiar with what it was like at that time. But I could ask him if you would like.
  • Sheryl: Sorry to hear your daughter is having GI problems---poor thing! Is she having crampy abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant? bloody diarrhea? These are classic symptoms of Crohn's. She's also the right age to be diagnosed too. The definitive diagnosis is made by colon biopsy via colonoscopy. There's no real blood test for it.

As for celiac disease, if her blood test for it is inconclusive then the next step for diagnosis would be a small intestine biopsy via upper GI endoscopy.  People with real celiac disease (not a sensitivity to gluten or wheat) will have a severe reaction when they ingest wheat products or gluten: horrible abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting within minutes of eating it.

As for lactose intolerance, alot of people develop it later in life. Again the reaction is gassy/crampy abdominal pain, diarrhea, increased flatulence after eating diary. However, it's typically not as severe as those with celiac disease after eating wheat.

If your daughter has been having cycles of constipation with diarrhea, she may be diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. There are meds for it, but it is one of those diagnoses given to young women with GI symptoms that no one can explain.

PM me if you have more questions...

Thank's Kit....I'll send you a pm so this doesn't get protracted here...

Yes! I'm currently experimenting with nixing most dairy from my diet. I'm really trying to focus on when I feel crappy after eating (defined as feeling suddenly bloaty and gassy). Replacing soy for dairy milk in the a.m. and eliminating my favorite cottage cheese snack in the p.m. is helping a lot. Bread and crackers seem to exacerbate the symptoms as well, more when I eat them in the afternoon. Too much fiber? IDK. Last year I discovered that fiber is not always my friend - someone turned me on to Fiber One bars, which tasted delish but wreaked havoc on my system.

Sheryl, I hope your daughter gets some resolution soon! The limbo between knowing something is wrong and finally getting a diagnosis is a really frustrating time.

Thanks Suzanne.  I have to say I laughed at your Fiber One bar experience.  The only person I know who can eat those without having to lock themselves in a well ventilated area away from others is my oldest daughter.  She eats Fiber One everything!!!!  I can't eat them either...at least not if I intend to go anywhere.

Following the saddle discussion with much interest! I have a Terry Butterfly on my road bike and LOVE it. I bought the tri version for my tri bike and while much better than the devil-worshiping Fisik it came with, it ain't perfect. My problems are also frontal - I love how everyone talk about the "sit bones" when of course I would look very odd sitting on the bone and tissue that is really the problem. @Beth, I don't care about the color so if Nemo rejects your Adamo I'd be willing to talk!

+1 vote for the Terry Butterfly!

Kind of out of touch from the forum for the past few days (and the rest of the week).  I'm "working" at a pilates retreat in Cabo San Lucas.  OMG, amazing weather, beautiful ocean.  It was pouring rain when I left Madison early Sunday morning, so this is a welcome change!

Hope you all have a great week!

  • Michele - so jealous!!! Where do I sign up to "work" at this retreat?! Dig your toes in the sand and take a few big deep breaths of ocean air for me please image
  • Ladies, thanks for the info./invite to the IMMOO Chicka Camp! I'll see if that is a possibility. Where is everyone staying?
Also, can't remember who posted about the yellow bike seat, but I'm interested. The seat that came with my Specialized Transition Comp is a KILLER! What brand/type is the yellow seat? I definately need the cut out! Yellow is appealing because 'Queen B' is black and yellow. Let me know, and we can PM details....
  • BTW ladies, did we register for hotels for the camp? I don't see any paperwork in my files Then again all the hotel stuff has been such a blur! If we haven't, should we? We could always cancel.

Also, sadly, Keith can't come. Work is just not going to let him out. He'll need to finish some proposal during that time so we can go to Maine. True chick weekend for me! That's A-OK!

  • 1.  How do you apply for a Pilates Retreat???  I can clean toilets pretty well in Cabos!!!  no really.  I wanna know.  why am I dreaming of being there when I could just work there!!  That's it, our best scheme we all get certified to do whatever it takes and then we go work at a Pilates Retreat???!!!!!  this has got to be best scheme ever.  Seriously, I need to know

    2.  Nope we don't have hotels.... I actually didn't know the exact location of start of camp... is it Madison???  we need to know.  All chicks need to scheme on how to get to Madison mid July!!!

My husband's bday is July 10th so he needs to come with me or I will feel horribly guilty leaving him... right now he is recovering from vestibular neuronitis, a viral ear infection that has permanently damaged one inner ear... so he is going to PT and balance therapy, he has not attempted to ride a bike yet but has been doing trainer rides.  He has been puny for 7.5 weeks now so looking ahead to July to see where he will be is a bit hard....He has run just a few times but as you know hard to come back when you have been down for so long...

    3.  let us know what your daughter ends up having, I love learning from this thread.... and of course I think this is the daughter that might do NOLA with you.???

    4.  gotta scoot and take kids to school!!  I know I missed many of you.....  but don't have time now to type!!  m

.....  but don't have time now to type!!  m

M-so many times I have been there..... we know you will come back when you can. I am between cases in OR so have a little time.

It's kind of nice starting your day knowing the case you just finished is giving a few people a new chance at life. While  sad for the donor family,  organ donation can help lots of people.

Gina- Happy CRNA week! yes, have done those 9+ hr cases, fun Oh and yes, taking care of the people that don't take care of themselves.

Michele- How nice to be" working" at a retreat in Cabo. I would Luuuuve to go to Cabo.

Sheryl- sorry to hear about your Daughter's Gi issues. I had a small bowel biopsy- no gluten problem.  I think mine is a lactose problem, slowly cutting back on dairy. Although I love my greek yogurt, that does not give me problems. My stomach has never been the same since my gallbladder came out. Its weird how your daughters at both end of spectrum on GI system.

I got the word yesterday, I am going to haiti for a week one day late Next week. Just don't know what day yet. It should be an interesting experience to say the least. I'll keep you posted

Cowgirl camp- I thought we had a hotel. i will have to check my emails, but I believe kitima and I are sharing a room? Will have to check my email  for where.

    Gotta scoot.

    have a great day

  •  Wow.....Tracy, Haiti.  That should be a challenge.  Keep us posted.  I have a friend in the Navy whose wife (also in the Navy) is on a relief ship stationed there.  He hasn't gotten much news from her but says it is heartbreaking.

Does anyone know where we notify the coaches if we need to hop into the race plan?  I put it on the micro thread but not sure if that is the place to generate action.   Thanks!!!

Cabo sounds good.  My husband won't take a warm weather vacation with me because he says it just isn't the same when you don't drink....it would be for me...but not for him.....

  • Yes, there is a hotel for the Cowgirl camp.

    Clarion Suites Central (WI103)

2110 Rimrock Road , Madison, WI, US, 53713

    Phone: (608) 284-1234

And yes, you and I are roomies, Tracy!

Michele: CABO! How cool is that? What are you doing for work there? And how can I get in on it?

Tracy: Haiti! Wow! Also, very cool. I've always wanted to go on a medical mission: to work without having to worry about dictation, documenting, billing...Just plain work, the good stuff. If you have any extra (even expired) medical supplies (gauze, syringes, iv tubing, old stethoscopes, ace bandages), bring it. They will greatly need and appreciate it.
  • Morning ladies!

Soup recipe posted and emails about saddles sent. I can't wait to try new things!

    Pilates camp? Haiti? = Awesome.

Barb - Do you watch Gossip Girl? If not, you must check it out for its Queen B.

I've decided to undertake some serious power studying this week. I'm totally geeking about IF charts and how they relate to successful Ironman execution. (Insert smiley face with power nerd glasses here.)

  • ;Barb- I tried Robin Cline's yello Adamo racer. Didn't work for me, I mailed it back to her.

@Tracy- Just read an article today about docs in Haiti. There are tons of docs there and not nearly as many nurses. They need nurses badly. Lots of docs with no where to work yet. Absolutely no access to blood work, very "battlefield calls" for medical decision making. Boston doc reported feeling quite humbled, "I am this fancy doctor in Boston. The nurses have to do what I say [direct quote there]. But here.... I am so humbled by this." Story goes on to explain that without a place to work, he treid to find a hospital to care for a boy- amputate foot. No one could take the case. He and his team finally did it under a mango tree at night. Pt was unconscious and died shortly thereafter. The next day he was asked about renal function before deciding on amputation. No urine passed, Fluids and Lasix = nothing. Decided to amputate, still died. Now they are just making the call to amputate earlier as they are seeing too many die as they try the usual American, "gotta do this first or I might get sued" maneuvers.

Article states that they are in dire need of nurses and physical therapists. But are also hoping that folks will consider coming in a few months when help really dwindles.

Sorry to be a bit of a downer. We are getting a lot of info about volunteering. I am hoping to do so in the months ahead.

  • Let me clarify above- I am not denirating the "American way" that I mentioned above. Just demonstrating how difficult it has been for him to get his mind around doing things without additional information.
  • Sorry to be a bit of a downer.
Nope, no worries. This is really important to be mindful of.

Soon after the earthquake I was on the gym treadmill slogging through Z5 intervals, watching the closed-captioned CNN broadcast of the situation, and contemplating true suffering. As much energy as I pour into training, it's a privilege and a kind of joyful suffering that I can begin or end at my choosing. We live in this virtual world and hash out our "pain" on this forum, but it's not the *real* world and it's not *real* pain. Thanks for the reality check and thanks to all of you who are helping this awful situation - I'm proud to know you!
  • it's not *real* pain.
Okay, I posted that and then realized that sometimes we stray from the "my legs are tired!" reflections into deeper, more serious topics, so of course I don't mean to minimize any of that. Hopefully you all know what I meant!
  • Suzanne,

Your post was right on. I have to say, the juxtaposition of how I spend my time "suffering," and what's currently going on in the world does have me a zapped emotionally. I have to watch that with myself. I internalize too much from others and other situations, and it wears me out. But the dichotomy is quite poignant, isn't it?

  • Wow, you girls are amazing. After the earthquake, the first thingI wanted to do was to go to Haiti, to help in anyway possible. But the need for medical help so outweighs the need for a teacher at this point in time! My heart goes out to all of the souls there.
Regarding the Cowgirl Camp, do I need to sign up with RnP? What is on the agenda? I'd much rather come up there and hang out with the girls, than do Muncie! However, I have emailed my training partner, with whom I am supposed to do Muncie. Will see if she's interested in going.

You girls crack me up!  Among other things (computer analyst, physical therapist), I am a pilates instructor.  The studio that I teach at is owned by an amazing woman named Kathleen Conklin.  She decided she would organize a pilates retreat.  After researching lots of potential locations, she chose an eco-friendly resort called Prana del Mar, about 30 minutes north of Cabo (http://pranadelmar.com). Lucky for me, she needed an assistant to help teach classes and organize other activities for the 18 clients attending the retreat. Kathleen and I have been here for a couple of days just preparing, and everyone else will be showing up in the next few hours today.

So, I guess the moral of the story is: if you are easily bored and that leads you to become educated in a variety of fields, AND if you know the right people, odds are that at some point you'll get a pretty cool opportunity to do something really fun!    I am a very lucky girl (even when I'm not on vacation enjoying the sun and ocean), and I appreciate every bit of it!

  • Ahhhh, Michele, beautiful!

Tracy...so proud that you are going. Prayers will be with you and your team! It's the children I worry about the most there.

I know we always get into dog talks here...my 13 year old Brittney Spaniel (Barney) had a "fatty lump" removed off his side today. It was the size of a mango, so my DH really wanted to get it removed. He's recovering well, just groggy. He's a sight...we dressed him an old basketball t-shirt so he wouldn't lick the stitches and he's all humped over on the couch. He won't lay down, but won't really sit up either. And then the poor dog has been harassed by the yellow lab (Bailey) during the evening, too. That's when I finally gave in and let Barney on the couch! All's calm for the time being!
