Glad to report that the neck is much better today. I took the advice I am always giving patients and rested, stretched, heated, and drugs (which I am not a fan of, but there is a place and time). A bit stiff but no pain. I have been down this road before, but as I said, it has been quite some time. Got on line and ordered a traction kit as I doubt this is the end of my problems.
@Sheryl- birth dad is huge news. I hope it is everything you want and more importantly- deserve.
@Nemo- Ugh for your computer/PT download problems. I hope it is an easy fix. That ride sounds great. Calling Linda and Leigh- we need to start long range planning here!
I really loathe cable tv. Less than a year ago, we bought a new tv for the pain cave. A few weeks ago we started getting on screen messages that the tv would not be compatible in the future with cable. Sure enough- no cable channels were available today. I so want Direct TV again. Now that Versus has worked out it's issues, I am wanting to switch. Gotta get DH on board.
Michele--I'm ready to talk! As soon as we can get outside, I hope we can start riding together. For IMFL, I did the RR swim with Leigh and Dave at Walden and would love to do that again--this time with you in tow. If you ever want to do any of the LRs together, I'll turn my world inside out to have company on those muthas. I am really starting to get excited!
90' in the cave this morning, but I felt grrrrrrreat! I am itching to get outside, but the low is in the teens tonight then rain the better part of next week. Oh well, I'll keep on keepin' on.
Cali videos--I will be happy to give her an audience. If I ever remember to bring my camera!
Ladies, many thanks to all of you who helped me figure out my power data confusion yesterday. For those of you who are not my Facebook friends (and, please, friend me up!), I did a ride yesterday and then posted my power data to Facebook. I've never done that before, but several other EN people had posted theirs from the day, and it seemed like fun. Almost immediately I started getting comments that the ride seemed super-strong and I should do an FTP test post-haste. While all of this was nice, it didn't seem right.
Gina was online at the same time, and I messaged her. She explained that my IF indicated I was working at or above threshold for much of the ride. We then talked a little about testing and I agreed I should probably do that.
After our little chat I got to thinking that 1) I followed the instructions for the ride, which included 30 minutes total at Z4 but the rest in the Z3 range, and I followed that as best I could, and, 2) HOW DOES THE COMPUTER KNOW MY THRESHOLD??? This drove me crazy all night. Not wanting to burn precious SAUs, I refrained from powering up the laptop to study WKO+ and the power seminar on a Saturday night. I proceeded to toss and turn all night, wondering "HOW DOES IT KNOW"????!!!
At first light I got up, made coffee, and opened up WKO+. Lo and behold, there it was. The program had given me an arbitrary FTP, which was much lower than my actual one. No, I had never noticed that before. No, I have not done much with the power seminar. Yes, I am a bad, non-studious EN athlete!
The moral of the story, for those of you ladies who are not power proficient, is to not post anything on Facebook unless you are sure of what it means! I cracked up this morning when I found the error, and then I went out for another ride to get some more data that now I understand a little better!
I hope this made you smile, and have a great day, ladies! I need to go keep cleaning the house before T discovers I'm online, or I will lose several of those hard-earned SAUs!
Sunday afternoon and just not caught up on the threads.
oh no on the hysterectomy!!! robin and for MiM... I know you are disapointed. yuck on that surgery, ouch is all I have to say and right before summer! yucko again. but who was it that just had one here in the haus,??? somebody, Sheryl? Barb? now I forget. Boston looks fun though so you did have that.
I am doing beach laundry and determined to knock it out and have had a great Sunday. hope you have too. I ran 6 miles painfree this morning! I know Robin and others with that piriformis can relate to how good that felt! I quit at mile 6 cuz I felt some tightness, sorta IT/ham so I quit and walked it on in 2 miles and I love to walk anyways. 6 is a decent number for a run! so again happy and it is a start.
the food fun sounds good too. one time I went to Taste of Chicago, PG with #1 but DH and I tried everything with my fav being turtle souup! rich but creamy.
dog pics well that one of the doggie door is priceless! looks like a petsmart card to me.
Power? well good you had Gina to talk you down and figure it out. I still don't have one girls, keep talking myself out of it. yep went to Guat and then to the beach and dog, kids?? well you know. but I read with interest your power numbers and stories.
FB? okay a funny... well so somehow I get a link to an EN talk happening in Atlanta... and for fun I click on it and up pops a pic of me at NOLA...! yikes. but it is a real pic, no touch up! real sweat and real wet hair from it being so hot. but it did make me laugh.
ummm. nothing else but will read about argentina.
Oh yeah I have a mammogram this week. another 6 monther. let me get fired up for that one! lol. yep you know how it is, they have this relaxing music playing in the office room, like that is gonna help. maybe it helps the technician! but like you are half dressed and classical music is not gonna do a thing!! and what is this hold your breath business??? good think I like to swim so I don't hyperventilate with a glass sheet stuck to me with a vise!! like where am I gonna go??! and what about this one "be still"... uh huh... again, yep I am not trying to move here!! like I wanna be in there any more than I have to. please do another one, let me stay standing all day long... I don't think so. and then lastly "wait right here" and then they go off and you see your whole life flash before you while reading some women's magazine that you can't even focus on!! and then she comes back in "we gotta do this one again!" and you are like..."okay chick, one more time and then if you don't get it right, I am outta here!" and of course you don't go anywhere!!! but you give her that look, like honey... you best get this right! she gets the memo, and says again "stay right here!".... and you wait even more until finally your favorite words of the whole day "you can get dressed now!"..... hallelulah! you skip out of that darn hospital. stop in at Starbucks, call up your girlfriend and say "it's over!!, and you better get yours scheduled!!"..
hopefully I've got the right names with the right stuff... can't wait to start meeting you ladies so I can keep it all straight as you're all such great inspirations for me!
@Beth - DC Restuarant Week is twice a year and it's my favorite time! Getting to try new restaurants I would never dream of going to... and there are so many wonderful places in Chicago... I was getting hungry reading your post!
@Gina - the pic of your 2 puppies coming into the doggy door together is priceless!
@Robin - my thoughts are with you... good luck with the surgery and the healing. I can't believe how upbeat you sound about it. Amazing.
@Michele - yes, take care of your neck! I broke mine as a kid (in a swim team accident)... long story. But I still have nagging trouble and tension. But, I've changed my sleep position (upon advice of my chiropractor) and am having much better luck (knock on wood).
@Sheryl - LoL. Sorry. If you can believe it, it actually gets annoying ... although I should be careful what I complain about. I've been out of commission a while with random injuries so no one accuses me of being too thin these days... and my pants don't fit. Sigh. But, my dad was/is the most undiplomatic - and pretty much says the same thing within 5 minutes of seeing me (maybe once or twice a year): "You're too skinny, kid. You need to eat." Although when we were at dinner this past August and he sat next to me and I devoured mine and helped him eat his, I think he realized I was eating... and eating... and eating... I ran 18 miles the next morning - all before my brother's wedding.
@Marianne- Yep- Sunday and cleaning the house! Vacuumed the entire upstairs, mopped the floors. You'll all get a kick out of this- I have to mop the bathroom ceiling 2x/year with bleach. Today was the day I tackled THAT chore again. Cleaned the rest of the bathroom. Put away the clean laundry. Still plenty to do, but the house looks and smells much better.
Got my run in before I hit the chores. I am on the IP intervals, and since a 1000 meter interval takes me just under 5' to run, 2' of rest is NOT enough, even if I were just to stand still. Got it all done and enjoyed the weather. Going for another massage tomorrow. She spent 90 minutes on my neck and upper back last Monday when I was in spasm the first time. I promised her that I would not torture her for longer than 60 minutes this time since she is adding me in at the end of a long day.
We are tentatively talking about getting another dog. I would love it, but as the responsibility will fall almost completely to me, I want to wait until after IMMoo. I already said that naming the dog "Clancy" is out of the question. I prefer mutts that are about a year old, but Max keeps talking about a Golden Retriever. We'll see. But I really miss having a buddy.
Michele--I would totally wait until after Moo before you get a dog. Cali is just settling in--in my head space, that is--so that 3/4 of my brain power isn't used up wondering about her. I know this sounds silly, but I was really stressed for a long time about how I could train for Moo and raise a puppy. Now it's coming together and doable. There is Golden rescue org in Hudson. They often have older dogs. Be careful with Goldens. They were so overbred for so long, there are lines that have bite/aggression issues. We run into them regularly. You always think a Golden is just a big friendly mutt, but not always these days. It's why we passed on that breed rescue. That's one dog I would get from a thoroughly-researched breeder. Here's part of an Animal Planet segment that talks a little about the biting issue. I'll stop doggie talk now.
Day off for me. Lots of office work done to get a jump on a crazy, busy week. I'm doing a project for the Smithsonian--promoting the Jim Henson exhibition that's touring the country. My life for the next weeks will be all about the muppets!
I will 2nd LOUDLY what Linda said. Wait until after IM to get a puppy. Belle is a total joy, but requires MUCH attention. She did not sleep through night for the first month (not her fault, just no bladder maturity). Even now my workout schedule has changed to Belle first, workout 2nd.
After MOO you will have nothing but time and then it will be a joy!!
I would third the waiting to get a puppy until you have time to devote to training/doing it 'right'. I love my dog and we have worked really hard so that he behaves (mostly) as we would like
Ran a 15K today. It was cold and hilly for someone who trained all winter in 60-70 degree temps without any hills. I survived though, had good company at the race and got to try out the new garmin, which I love.
Finally got most things settled here in Rochester. I can say for sure it will be an interesting summer! Looking to enjoy my second week of transition then gotta get prepped for this race. No more messing around!
@ Linda- I LOVE the muppets!! My jaw dropped open when I read your post and was immediately jealous!! How fun.
@ Marianne, Robin and Mim...I haven't had a hysterectomy but had radiation and chemo. The internal radiation killed my ovaries so while I still have them, they are useless. Because of that, I did go through menopause early. So sorry about the surgery. I know you must be disappointed with the down time. Can you do aquajogging or anything like that? I assume it's similar to when I had a C-section on the restrictions?
Yep, wait on that puppy or even older rescue dog until after IMOO! Everyone will be happier for it for sure
Thanks Sheryl - I am having the laprascopic surgery and they will leave the ovaries intact as long as nothing looks suspicious with them - so I shouldn't have any menopause stuff to deal with as well, at least not yet - I hope! I am told two weeks of pretty much nothing and have also been told I won't feel like doing much during those couple of weeks and then I can gradually start to work back up to normal, but no heavy lifting or the like for 6 weeks. I am hoping I'll feel ready to start back full speed after 4 weeks, but I am not going to rush it! If it takes longer - it takes longer. I have changed my A race to Longhorn in October (but haven't entered yet) so I am not stressing over it.
M - that whole foot thing with a dog is a real pain. I had one once that went on for 2 months of soaking, medicating and bandaging. I hope Rudy heals up a lot faster than that!
I put up a fun picure of my boys in the Club House! I hope everyone has a great week - lousy wet cold weather here today, but it is supposed to get better each day starting tomorrow and I can go for a test run on Wednesday - can't wait!
venting here, guess where any PM $$ is going?? on a mammogram! 500$ deductible and then $250 for a diagnostic even though I am due an annual they won't charge for annual if a diagnostic is due!! the diagnostic screening is more in depth and they will also do an annual.....so basically ???? now let's just say I had a sinus infection and go back to doc?? would I have to pay out of pocket on a doc visit? nope but a mammogram? yes. I am downright irritated. $750 to get checked out. okay so yes glad I am healthy....so I guess if I get the all clear then my next one? what next year will be covered. now my son got an MRI on his wrist and we didn't pay out of pocket but a mammogram...? what is up with this. I have United health insurance. okay vent is over. yes I will pay I mean really what else to do??
Michele---You're getting a doggie! How exciting! Yep, wait til after IMMoo--you want the have the energy to train this puppy right.
Robin: You'll recover faster from a laparoscopic operation vs. an open procedure. I would think no swimming for 2 weeks. PM me if you have questions...
Marianne: $250 co-pay for a mammogram?! Seriously?! That's crazy. I think insurance should pay for these screening tests. Of course, what the hospital charges is wildly different from what the insurance company will pay them. It's such a screwed up way to do accounting. I'll stop right now or a big, big rant is coming.
Kristen: I did get a good chuckle from your powermeter story. When I first got mine, I didn't know that you had to set your FTP. I did IMLP in 2007 thinking I'd completely shot my wad going IF = 0.99 and took this thought into my run. In reality, my FTP was set too low. I noodled around too much on the bike and let that bad thought cripple my run. I wasn't with EN at the time (or none of this would've happened!). Good thing you're working out the bugs now.
Gina: Yep, you've got it right with the luggage math...20 pounds of camera equipment meant that I wore the same 2 pairs of pants and one pair of shorts for the whole trip! Packing for this trip, I summoned all my cycling weight weenie-ness.
Sheryl: I think getting off the diet soda will really help with your weight loss. Artificial sweetners are known to increase appetite. In my former life as a gastric bypass surgeon, alot of my patients would really plateau/stall out with their weight loss around 9-12 months out. After cutting out artificial sweetners, most of them were able to continue with their weight loss.
I think the theme for my season so far is Standing Down. For the last 5 days, I've done no training. I've slept 9-11 hours every night and poured antibiotics, antihistamines, decongestants, and cough syrup into my body. I woke up this morning feeling the best I've felt since this stupid cold came back. I'm not 100% yet---still coughing like a chain smoker, but at least I can breathe through both nostrils. I may go for a short and easy swim---flush that chlorinated water through my head should help, right?
Everyone- Thanks for the info/ advice about dogs. I know better than to get a dog before IMMoo. I need to get Max to read this. Men are just a bit, um, unaware, about the work involved when you do it yourself. Even if he promised to "do it all", we are going to Costa Rica for 2 weeks in June and he is going to the Galapagos for 2 weeks in August- and MOT during my taper period when I might actually enjoy the dog.
@Marianne- That really bites. So sorry! I won't even mention health care reform.... ;-)
@Linda- The Muppets!?! I was not a fan as a kid (not allowed to watch tv much) but as an adult I find them hilarious (or annoying- depending). Enjoy THAT project! What an experience it will be.
Dreary, rainy day here in NE. But the temps feel like spring. I can deal with that.
EDIT- @Kitima- MMMMMM! Luggies and boogers in the pool! Glad to hear you are recovering. You did good as a weight weenie!
M-- I hear you! Our insurance plan changed--and I did not follow the fine print. Taylor's 4 wisdom teeth removal was $100 co-pay when I made the appointment. When I got there, I got handed a bill for $1,076. That a 10x increase! Don't get me started...
Kitima--the netty pot is awesome for cleaning out gunk--and I swear it helps keep one from getting sinus stuff. I use it all the time and love it.
Re the Muppets...funny thing is, personally, I really don't like them either. I don't like clowns or puppets of any kind. Kermit singing makes me want to run for the hills. BUT, working for the Smithsonian on projects rocks--they are awesomely professional. And it's a winner with the press, and the public will come in droves. I love the "can't miss" prjects, because enough of the others is like scaling Everest to get traction.
Oh- I confess, I'm a HUGE muppet fan. Have been for years. I think one of the first movies Joe and I saw together was The Muppet Movie. Seriously- I've got "Kermit Unplugged" on my iPod.
Clowns on the other hand are a TOTALLY different story. They scare me. I hate the circus too. It took a boatload of promises and begging from Joe and friends to get me to go to Circ du Sole.
Michele- I must be having sympathetic neck pain. Got some spasms yesterday doing the pushups and had to stop. I've been icing ever since. Hope it gets better for you soon!
Ok, must check in as another closet Muppet fan. They were big when Meg was little and one of the safe (non annoying Barney type) shows to watch. How could you not love Gonzo (and Camilla the chicken), the grumpy ole guys, Swedish chef... I think I posted up a Queen video of the Muppets on Facebook a while back- classic stuff. And they were the first show to lure awesome guest hosts (and with a bunch of puppets that ain't bad!)
Interesting weekend of sorts- 62 mile ride on Sat (sunshine but chilly at the start upper 30's brrr) Always good to have that first semi-longish wakeup call ride out of the way. Gotta get the legs cooking! Alot of local folks are just now having "ah ha" moments abt what they've signed up for in August. They really need to put a 10 day hold period post race day for the IM intoxication to pass before allowing folks to sign up for long course if they've never done a tri. They come out on race day, volunteer and in a glow plunk down $500 the next day. Yes, I know WTC only sees the $' but....
Volunteered at the local sprint series- cold, drizzle and a bit of small hail on the bike course. Those folks definitely earned their finishes yesterday & most still had awesome spirits about them. So cool to see! Down and out today with hopefully just a bug! Got training to do!!!!
Here's the deal on the topic review button from "tech support":
Hi, a bit ago people were complaining that it took forever to load up the reply window (even crashing some computers). The reason that it took so long was the topic review for this thread is ginormous...and just takes too many resources to load up. So it was a compromise.
If you would like to change things back, put your comment in the admin thread above. 3.0 VBulletin handled our thread with no problem. Just sayin' . Without being able to topin review, this whole thread changes. Bum-mer.
Kristen - the good thing is that you did post your info and smart Gina was there and jumped in to help. That's a good thing! I love how the learning process happens like that. Now you are all good and have a few weeks before Lonestar to do some of this mental work.
Kitima - Glad you're feeling better! Like Linda I also do a nasal rinse on a regular basis. Major help! Glad you're just resting and getting this over with. You've got work to do very soon...
Kris - hope your legs are in that happy-hurt place. That's a big ride!
While we're talking about insurance.... I have had such a time with costs since my accident. The rule from now on is no major injuries to your face (got that?). Really, impale yourself, blow out your knees, eat so much that you blimp out to 800 lbs and need to be lifted with a crane out of your house in order to be helped. Whatever you want, just DON'T hurt your teeth! Dental insurance is THE biggest crock! All of my major medical stuff was covered quite well including reconstruction & hospital stay. Once I started to have to have the remaining teeth crowned, and the ones that were too damaged taken out I found that I was paying a lot out of pocket. $8K last year. This year should be somewhat light because I'm not starting the work until 5/21 (thanks to your advice), so once that work is done to the tune of $2K, then I get to start braces, which will be a total of $6510. And then once the remaining teeth are in place I can start implants...who knows what that will cost. That'll be a ways out though. So please....nothing to the face girls! I only hope that with kids' dentistry and stuff more of this stuff is covered. I know that ortho tends to have better coverage for kids.
Can we add to the clown list? What is it with mimes? Can't stand 'em!
Gotta go to the cave to get my ride in before work....but it's gonna be 79 today!!!
Please check in with Coach P through the link below. I think archiving this thread monthly, and having topic review back is a good compromise. Let him know what you think. Seems we break the system.
Insurance = lame! No one should have to pay that much for a mammogram. Or teeth. I am so lucky that I have ridiculously good insurance now (no premium) and I'm still amazed at how much I spend each year in the FSA account.
Linda - Cool gig! Very cool gig!
I'm also anti-clown, but non anti-mime. Or, at least not anti-Jacques Tati, who was a wicked awesome french mime.
Summary of first transition week? So much good food. And I haven't had spandex on for a week. This week? I miss my running shoes. And feel motivated to check out pools. And clean my bikes. It is amazing what a week of triathlon vacation will do.

Everyone else - Hi!
Beth- I have 2 bikes that would love to be cleaned. What addy shall I send them too???
M- I can relate to PM $ money going for something else. Mine is not health related, but car related. The car place called, recommend brake pads and rotors, plus had to have other things done. $1200.00 also sending out money for house rental in LP
Plan to update my resume to start picking up extra shifts outside my hospital. My list for bicycle stuff is getting longer- compact cranks so i don't get kicked in Ovaries and PM, also want the Cobb V flow> Going up to RI in May for in person bike fit at TTbikefit for bothe tri bike and road bike
Hope you guys in NE are surviving the rain. We are getting here, but not as bad.
M- glad Rudy is feeling better, and able to help you with gardening
Kit- glad to hear you are feeling better as well. Nothing like the smell of chlorine lingering after a swim workout ( if you can smell it) hope the cough gets better
Robin- sorry to hear about the need for hysterectomy, hopefully your back will be feeling better soon. Good luck @ home with the chicken pox quarentine
Sheryl-I stoppped drinking soda around 1998. Don't miss it one bit. Now I just need to get off the espresso. Looking forward to hear about your meeting with father in NO. I am still battling my weight but it is starting to go down. As my run increases, I will start to see results. I will be Huge as well for my olympic in May; probably won't be at my goal weight by July, but will be leaner and meaner than I am now
Michele-hope your neck is feeling better.
Carly- hope you are getting settled in rochester, hopefully not to much longer for nicer weather.
Gina-Doggie pics are wonderful. makes me smile every time
Tracy--when you come to RI let's see if we can arrange a meet and greet with the sleeper cell peeps here!
In all of my years on the planet, I swear I have never seen rain like this. Schools closing, businesses letting people go home. It's unreal out. The DPW guys are back in front of my house pumping the storm drain. Last week, they were infron t of my house for 4 straight days and nights. Unsettling.
O--the whole dental thing...don't get me started. So much overall health is linked to good oral health, but noooooo...seems nothing is covered. I can't believe your ordeal. When my oldest son had his wisdom teeth removed, they made such a big mistake leaving in a piece of gauze that got stitched over, and then healed over. It got infected (no kidding) had to surgically removed...it goes on and on. Guess what? Better make sure all the dental work is done right too, because it seems there is no such thing as dental malpractice. My son almost lost part of his jaw, and all they had to say was "sorry."
Wow Linda- that rain is crazy and freaky. Ground must be really saturated! Hopefully will be the end, and the sun coming out will dry it up for next few days
I remember my 1st yr of anesthesia school, was in New Britain 2004. The rain that May and June was unbelievable, especially for me since I was living in AZ the 9 yrs prior. I thought we were going to have to get life jackets and rafts to throw out from 3rd floor apt, we had tons of snow that following winter
Guess I should plan on a rainy Lake Placid in July
Unbelievable about no malpractice for dentistry, No Sponge counts? In the OR, they do several counts, if they don't add up, xray is done.
Olivia- your dental stuff is outrageous
Linda-Plans for May. Drive up from Baltimore May 6, will probably hook up with one of my classmates that night( still working on that), meet with Todd Friday am 5/7, then I will be open, plan to head back to Baltimore sometime that saturday. Would Love to hook up with NE sleeper cell!
Oh, I signed up for a bike ride 4/25- 75 K to tour Cherry Blossom in Howard County maryland. It will be my first event in well over a year. Yipeeeeeeee

Congrats to PhysFarm athlete Colleen Capper...70.3 Cali Age Group fastest bike split, fastest run split, and an Age group win in the bank!
Ladies, many thanks to all of you who helped me figure out my power data confusion yesterday. Sunday afternoon and just not caught up on the threads.

FB? okay a funny... well so somehow I get a link to an EN talk happening in Atlanta... and for fun I click on it and up pops a pic of me at NOLA...! yikes. but it is a real pic, no touch up! real sweat and real wet hair from it being so hot. but it did make me laugh.
ummm. nothing else but will read about argentina.
I don't think so. and then lastly "wait right here" and then they go off and you see your whole life flash before you while reading some women's magazine that you can't even focus on!! and then she comes back in "we gotta do this one again!" and you are like..."okay chick, one more time and then if you don't get it right, I am outta here!" and of course you don't go anywhere!!! but you give her that look, like honey... you best get this right! she gets the memo, and says again "stay right here!".... and you wait even more until finally your favorite words of the whole day "you can get dressed now!"..... hallelulah! you skip out of that darn hospital. stop in at Starbucks, call up your girlfriend and say "it's over!!, and you better get yours scheduled!!"..
m
hopefully I've got the right names with the right stuff... can't wait to start meeting you ladies so I can keep it all straight as you're all such great inspirations for me!
Hope all is going great!
How fun.
Have a wonderful week, my friends!
Muppets! huge fan and one of the cats is named after them.
@Linda + Michele- totally game for some long range planning. swim, bike, run. makes no difference!
Hi All,
Here's the deal on the topic review button from "tech support":
Hi, a bit ago people were complaining that it took forever to load up the reply window (even crashing some computers). The reason that it took so long was the topic review for this thread is ginormous...and just takes too many resources to load up. So it was a compromise.
If you would like to change things back, put your comment in the admin thread above. 3.0 VBulletin handled our thread with no problem. Just sayin' . Without being able to topin review, this whole thread changes. Bum-mer.
Hey Ladies,
Please check in with Coach P through the link below. I think archiving this thread monthly, and having topic review back is a good compromise. Let him know what you think. Seems we break the system.

Checking out the thread next Linda. We knew we'd break the forum one of these days!
Hi Everyone
Gina-Doggie pics are wonderful. makes me smile every time
Ok, gotta scoot.
Sorry if I missed anyone, hope all is well
Tracy--when you come to RI let's see if we can arrange a meet and greet with the sleeper cell peeps here!
Yipeeeeeeee
