What It Takes.... September 2010 (month of the Moo Chicas)

This thread picks up where this one:  http://endurancenation.us.dnnmax.co...fault.aspx

left off.

@Kit, I love the pic!  I agree with Nemo, the scarf should be pink!    Hmm, I researched black and orange animals and birds (a cheetah is also black and orange), but didn't think to look into the Kestrel angle... that's pretty sweet!  And it's too funny your DH needs you to specify if you saw a bird or a bike.

@Nemo - please keep us posted and be safe!  Fingers crossed it misses the east coast altogether!  Channel the Dixie Chicks!

@Kristen - my car's name is Gus Gus... for the little fat mouse in Cinderella who likes wine and cheese.  It helps that he's silver...

so, ladies - do tell, what are your bikes, and cars' names?

  • Just wanted to check in with you ladies to let you know that things are getting a little tense around here. We are watching Earl very closely and are hopeful the majority of tracks will hold true so that it goes east of us. However, there is a significant possibility that we'll have to evacuate and board up the house. And if we have to evacuate, well, I can't guarantee when we can get back and that kinda screws with IMWI a little. So just keep your fingers and toes crossed. - Nemo

Counting on you being safe & Earl going East!!

  • Nemo: If you must evacuate, scoop up all your IM stuff, Joe, and the cats and come stay with me! I'm totally serious. I know it's kinda far from NC, but we've got lots of room. Piggy and Scooby would love the company! Really hoping Earl stays the heck away...

    Bike names...
    The mountain bikes are girls:
Mandy (as in "Caught up in a world of uphill climbing, Tears are in my eyes, Nothing is rhyming...Oh Mandy...")
    Doretta
Yellow bike (not the most creative or girly of names, I know)

The road, tri, 'cross bikes are boys:
Dave (tri bike named for Dave Zabriskie)
    Jake ('cross bike)
    Gary (road bike)
  • @Earl - Go play in the ocean! But not near Nemo!

    Llamas with scarves = like.

No car to name. Dashiell Hammett, or Dash, the Kestrel, and the roadie? Started out life with purple tires, bar tape, and a pink saddle as Flora. With black tires, white tape, and clip-on aero bars morphed into Cowboy Bob, and now has blue tape, and blue tires. I've been calling him Princess Jon. Bike is having identity issues.

  • Hopefully Earl will turn East and leave Nemo alone! We rode out Hurricane Ike in our house and that was one terrifying night. We had no damage to our house but so many others did.
  • @Beth, Dashiel wrote the maltese falcon, right? And spectrels are falcons... yay, I love the play on words!  So, upon further research (thanks to Kitima enlightening me), I'm now toying with 2 names:  crush and falco... need to see how he feels.  but reading this on wikipedia made me laugh (and think of a particular race I do, Eagleman, that is just a tad bit windy):

Kestrels require a slight headwind in order to hover, hence a local name of Windhover for Common Kestrel.

I never named the roadie... don't see that happening after allt hese years.

And Nemo, I have a spare room, too... and I'm out this weekend (Sat- Mon) so you'd have your run of my place and hopefully Max and Sid would be nice to you and your kids!

I logged on to look for something imparticular and now that I'm here I can't remember what I was gonna do.  I hate when that happens...

  • Every time I look at the weather (a lot), I worry about Nemo. While the rest of us are leisurely packing (ha), your packing is much more stressful.

My car was named by the contractor that built our house in Virginia. They all said it looked like Darth Vader's car, so it is - Darth

My TT bike is also black, so he became- Garth (Wayne's World)

Roadie is pink and she is named- Princess

I packed all of my race gear last night. Taking the bike and bag to LBS tonight for Tri Bike Transport pickup. My bag fit everything for the race, so I also threw in the post race clothing (more for padding of stuff). It is all sooooo real.....

  • Watch has now been converted to a Warning. Just waiting for them to yell EVACUATE!!!

Stressed, yeah- mostly because it's all crap I can't control. Trying to "stay in my box" and control what I can. I packed an entire house and moved the day after IMWI in '08. I can do this.
  • Oh- and I've never given my car a name. But I always call it "buddy" 'cause that's what my dad always called his car when he wanted it to do something "come on buddy, just 2 more miles to the gas station- you can make it!"
  • I had to share... obviously I have too much time on my hands during my lunch break!

Seeing this, I think we'll be safe to assume we can get a chica visor on my llama for Moo next year, very fashionable!

As to the question of what to feed the llama on the long course, I've discovered there will be no need for me to reach out to Infinit:

    11Jul

For a 25-30 gallon water trough

    • 6-8 oz powdered fruit drink mix ( berry, grape, cherry, etc.)
    • 1/2 cup flavored equine electrolyte powder
    • Fully dissolve in the barrel with water.

The purpose of the sweetened fruit drink is to give the mix a scent that will encourage the llamas to drink more.

The barrel or trough should be a light color, silver, blue or gray so llamas can see the color of the mix.   The electrolytes need to be in a shady area where llamas kush in the heat of the day

There should also be a barrel of cool plain water next to the electrolyte mix.

This mixture will ’sour’  in about 24 hours so un-used mixture needs to be poured out, the barrel rinsed and a new mixture set out for each day when there is a NOAA heat advisory issued.

  • Ooh la la! Tres chic, llama!
  • Really hoping you don't get hit with the hurricane, Nemo! I am impressed with how you are resolving to stay in your box.

I admit I am not following the whole llama thing, but that is a cute one....

    Bike names:
    MTB-Stella
    Roadie 1-Sam
    Roadie 2-Diva
    Tri-Roo
    Commuter-Shirley (the Surly)

Counting the days to when I get to come and meet all of you!
  • Wow, NONE of my bikes have names......

  • @Gina - I feel better now!  I thought I was the only one.

@Olivia - probably better, the llama thing definitely took on a life of it's own, but it's been fun!  In a nutshell, my bike broke, Dan got a little testy about my buying a new bike, Kitima (and others) was a tad annoyed with Dan's response and wondered if he preferred I ride a llama at my IM... and there you have it.  Caught up for the most part, although missing a few items from the highlight reel.

  • Hi everyone! Thanks for all of the support...now it's your turn Moo Chicas!!! I love this forum...from boobs to llamas with scarves to bike names. I also name my bikes. My tri bike is Apolo Alexander and my new road bike is named Miller. I haven't figured out his middle name yet cause he's brand spankin' new! I can't wait to ride around for fun once this ridiculous heat subsides. For now, I must unpack.

@Barb, sorry about your IMLou experience. Glad you are well and can't wait to read your report.

@Nemo, eeek! I grew up in Hawaii and was fortunate enough to never have had to evacuate from a hurricane. Actually, in a small place like Hawaii, I don't know where we would go since hurricanes are often as big as the island or state for that matter. Go away Earl!
  • Lucky = my QR Lucero, Lady = my pink Orbea dhama race, Lola = my specialized Stumpjumper mt bike. The car? no name.

okay well my LBS are all very good to me. really I am blessed. From one store, my GF gets given to me a free small singlet! another LBS? the co owner riding the trail yesterday and hears my clangy bike and has me come by and he lubes it meticoulsy and now it rides dreamy and wants me to come in on Monday for a once over, the other bike store? moved my aero bars in on the spot as when asked I told them of my shoulder blade pain and I even know the guys at two other local bike stores!!! yep in 5 years, I have become friends with all of central AR bike stores and without them, me and my bikes wouldn't be riding! My local running store special fast ordered some new running shoes for me and gave me $$ for my charity. I swim with people who are way faster than me yet wait on me on the other side of the lake, same thing happens to me on group rides, on my runs? the local RV people manning the park know me and gave me their # just in case I need it and have left me fresh vegetables on my car! my mt bike sponsor gave me my bike and riding kit! yes in reflection, this forum and you chicas have helped support me too and so I have one week til I leave for Madison and really it has taken "a village" to get me to this point. Thanks for being part of that. of course my husband has bought me all of the other stuff! and lots of that over the years! quite overwhelming and today at the end of my run as I was walking, I gave thanks to God for my good health and asked that 1. I complete IMWI and 2. while I was asking, might as well be faster too! lol.... m
  • My tri bike is named Bunny. The story of that is here--for those of you who haven't heard it a thousand times by now. image

My road bike is Grace. Although I think of it more like Grrrrace....growling into the "race" part. image

  • To the tapering ladies...anyone else very water retentive? Had a burger, and my fingers now look like sausages. I feel like a water balloon. What the hell in tapering does that, one would wonder?

  • no not yet, had that a few weeks ago and Kitima gave me a very good answer, something about the recovery process. no I am just thirsty. can't quench it, tried Fresca, Orange juice, fruit, now going for good ol water. trying to pack here. m
  • Hm. I ate thai food with white rice the other day and turned into balloon girl. Maybe all this paleo stuff is making us intolerant to bad stuff, like white rice?

  • Taper yuckiness:
    - like Marianne- I am so thirsty and nothing quenches. Peeing lots, so I'm not dehydrated, but I can't get enough
    - sore throat
    - sneezing a lot
    - last night I had a sinus headache- which I never get, I don't have allergies
    - slightly congested nose/ head this morning

I was so exhausted last night, I went to bed and hardly moved, slept 9 hours, still tired and don't want to go to work (but I am, I'm not contagious). Skipped the LR even though it was only an hour and change.

  • Checking in quickly:
Dare County has issued a mandatory evacuation of visitors from the entire county and has instructed all ocean front residents to move to higher ground. In addition to those orders, the town of Nags Head (where I live) has issued a mandatory evacuation of residents in South Nags Head. We live just a tad north of the “South” Nags Head line, however we are waterfront (sound side) and thus in a higher risk area. If Earl would just keep to the east of the outer banks we would be OK, but if it becomes a more direct hit we are in for some trouble.

Since Earle continues to sneak closer and closer to the west he is making us a little more nervous. Therefore at this time, we are working under the assumption that we are going to leave the island and head inland this afternoon. That way we are prepared to move quickly. We’ll make a final go/no go decision some time around 2:00 this afternoon.

The good news is that there isn't a mandatory evacuation- which means my biggest concern of not being able to get back on the island after the storm (and before IMWI) is mostly resolved (there is still a chance if we got a direct hit that they would close the island- but it's a much smaller chance). I have all my "race gear" packed and will take it with me just in case.

Wow, NONE of my bikes have names......

I call my bikes lot of names at certain times, most of which aren't reprintable here...

Relieved I'm not the only one who doesn't have names for her bikes!

  • Nemo, I'm glad you are safe. And Earl - GO AWAY!

Tapering. OMG best massage ever last night. I feel almost like a normal human being.

What is up with the thirst thing? I have it, too.

Don't mean to keep beating this drum here & on FB, BUT, my sister waited too late to evacuate before Katrina. When they decided to get out, it was simply too late &  they found themselves scrambling for higher ground which became the ATTIC  of someone's house.

When all was said and done, her home was completely destroyed. Had they stayed in their house, they wouldn't have survived.

    End of my preaching.

Take your race gear and BE  SAFE!!!

  • Ditto on the thirst thing and the water retention thing.... what the heck is up???? Felt good on the swim & bike yesterday. Last "long" run at 70 mins today. Can't believe the day is sneaking up on us!

@Linda- did you see your purple cow in the IMLOU pics? They thought it was great! I also got one that says "race" so wear them both!!

    @Nemo- stay safe!
  • @LInda, love the bunny story.  I can't wait to get power and learn a bit more how to ride smart!

@Nemo... been thinking about you all day and worried!  I definitely channeled you to help me get through my big day - how can I complain about sun and 90 degrees when you're dealing with a category 3/4 hurricane... so I dug deep and got it done.  But man did I want to throw in the towel.

FWIW, I think the "big day" for first timer IM'ers should be called:  "so, you really want to be an Ironman?  you gotta get through this first!"

@Marianne - you are blessed!  It's wonderful you have such a wide support network, you deserve it!

  • Praying for Nemo and Earl avoidance!!! Take care and be safe!
  • We are safe and sound in Greenville NC. We packed up the cats and headed inland. Earl is now a Cat 2 and it looks like we would have been just fine staying put. But there were so many friends and family members worried about us- that for everyones peace of mind we decided to take the conservative approach.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! To all of you for your prayers, good vibes, well wishes, and just plain old Love. It really meant a lot to me to know you were thinking of us during this time. With all that good vibe Power, Earl just couldn't possibly stay a Cat 4! Chica Power for sure!

All the girls in the office were asking about you all day!!!  I kept them posted.  They were worried and will be glad to find out that you are safe and sound!

  • I agree with you all!!! Not enough water in the world this week. Even my daughter is having issues.

I'm nesting....anyone else??? It's like the week before delivery of the girls!!! I would love to clean the garage but don't want to accidentally hurt myself so I'm not gonna. What is everyone else doing for the jitters???
