Right there with you on the mood swings Linda. I'm wearing my pink EN Chica T-shirt today specifically because I wanted to put myself in a good mood about stuff. :-)
Even though I did not finish WI, I go between feeling elated at the whole thing, and terribly bummed. Physically and mentally I also swing from "let's get going" to tired. I have had a "big" summer, as you all well know, and I think some downtime is in order. I have swum once since WI for fun, and walked the dog. You know what? I'm not going to rush it this time. The elation and good feelings that come from a big event drives a strong desire to get back to it. That can often be fleeting, driven by endorphins and masking the real need for a break. For me, coming back too soon without a good break--even core and weights--crops up and bites me in the arse in a few months and ruins a real comeback. It's hard to keep it all going mentally--for me at least. So I'm going to take it easy until I'm ready. Might be another week, might be two. With any luck I will be at this for many years, and I have finally learned that sometimes "less is more. "
So true Linda. It's hard to not go full bore ahead! I have the what ifs swirling and I want to kick the next challenge to the moon but need to temper it with EN wisdom and guidance from all ya'll!
Tonight is the monthly garlfriend dinner. Only way it could be better is if it were at my house cuz it's right across the street. Chili, cornbread, salad, apple crisp. Hasan threw out a challenge to me last night that the first one of us who is down 13 lbs from today's weight gets to pick a prize. I will have to just have tastes and not a feast! Having a little sumpin sumpin with it though...a margarita finally!!! Should be a fun night. We usually end with Bunco which is always fun after a few drinks....
Some of Today's run IPOD shuffle playlist! there were some real "run moments" in there No garmin, no idea of pacing or distance but I would guess 5 -6 miles...post IM 82 degrees, sunny, 10mph winds, humidity 64%, just about a perfect day for me!!! running across the pedestrian only bridge that separates Little Rock from North Little Rock.

Marianne- I love that you've posted pics/vid of that bridge in the past- 'cause now I can really imagine you out there!
I had a nice easy 35 min run this morning and felt awesome. It was great to finally put on running shoes after a lot of down time from Moo. I listened to Kitboo's race report podcast as I ran and it made me feel a little like she was running right next to me- just like when we were at cowgirl camp :-) That made me happy!
I'm volunteering again this weekend at another race. It's a 10K and they need lead cyclists for the runners- so I said OK. I just hope I can peddle fast enough to stay in front! 10K pace can be pretty fast for a bike if we have a strong headwind!!!
So, I made my lists for the RR since it's an Aqua Velo I have to travel for... this morning I decided to change out my wheels to knock it off the list... and what what should have taken 3 minutes took 3 hours. Trying to put on the back wheel I had trouble. (Actually I had trouble changing to my Mavics when I got the bike...), I tried to stay calm... wondering if the back release instead of the down release for the skewer was so different I couldn't do it. After getting good and annoyed and dirty, I gave up and took the bike to one of the LBS near me feeling like a dumb girl who can't change a back wheel bc the chain is in the way... turns out the derailleur is broken. So, it's not that I'm a dumb girl (yay), but I need a new derailleur (boo). I'd rather be a dumb girl, that's cheaper. Anyway, the mechanic was able to fiddle with the derailleur and put on the wheel and told that as long as there is a wheel on there, there will be tension in the chain and I can ride... but it will need to be replaced. Okay. I was all of the map of emotions... wanting to throw up mostly, with some crying thrown in. This is a brand spaking new bike that I've ridden outside twice... how the heck could I have broken it. Am I really that dense that I broke the derailleur the first time I changed the wheels... but I DID change the wheel... and I rode the darn bike... so obviously I didn't break the thing... or I wouldn't have been able to get the wheel on in the first place.
Anyway, he told me what I'd need to do if I flat in the back (please send good karma my way that I don't)... but if I do have probs, better at a RR than in Florida. I was really trying to channel you all and keep this all in perspective. A derailleur is a couple hundred bucks... it's not cancer, it's not a huge crash, it's not Kona dreams out the window... hard to make peace, but I tried my best to be calm...
I'm happy to say Todd will replace it even though it's not warrantied (my only guess is that it was damaged during shipping to me (the box was bruised and battered when I got the bike). So that's a huge relief, but I won't get the new der. til next week...
So, I'm thinking I'm over the drama... I need some calm in my life. My run today ended up being at lunch bc this took up my entire morning... so much for getting work done on my telework day (grumble)... and it was darn hot... I did my best. Got the 2:15 in, but it wasn't pretty. The heat combined with my anxiety just made for a bad time of it. I'm now essentially packed. Dan is going to come over and we're heading to my favorite Italian spot for dinner then we'll take another video of me on the bike (I lowered the seat even more and pushed it forward a nudge)... hopefully this will be it... Todd thinks it's close. I packed my multitool and will put it in my special needs bag - and if I have to make an adjustment after a few hours I will...
When this is all behind me and I'm dealing with post-Ironman depression... please remind me of all this drama and anxiety - hopefully that will help me enjoy the downtime!
When this is all behind me and I'm dealing with post-Ironman depression... please remind me of all this drama and anxiety - hopefully that will help me enjoy the downtime!
** No it does not!!!! smile, okay I should lie to you.. oh yeah piece o' cake!! well good that Todd will replace. you have another bike? you could ride it, or have it packed. just in case you think it wont' work. or change the terrain of your ride to eliminate problems, make smaller loops back to your car, or some such. you shoulda seen some people's bikes!! dirty, unkempt and noisy. you will be okay. just make sure it is safe.
Wow Becky what a day!!! So great to hear that you have things in perspective! I have really been enjoying post IMWI. I have reset my sights...been reading more on the forum and planning more strategically for next time!!! Can't wait to cheer you on in Florida!!!
Good morning ladies. I hope the Moo chicas are recovering well. I am getting antsy to get back into a routine. I ran 4 easy miles yesterday, it was great to run again. My body seems to have recovered well. Starting to plan out the 2011 season. Looks like I will be joining the November OS group.
@Linda-crazy you spent your birthday at the dentist. @Marianne I loved your poem. @Becky-totally sucks about your rear deraileur. Can you buy one at the LBS and send the bill to bike fit guy? What a PIA!!! That is why I made friends and spend my money at the LBS-get things fixed in real time. At least he is going to replace it.
Oh, no, Becky! Broken derailleur is awful! And definitely not a fun thing to have to heal with in the heart of Ironman training. Stuffing all that fitness into one's body is hard enough without the distraction of mechanical complications!
Kate -- Do you happen have have Chicago Moojo? I think my sister sent her along with you from the women's changing tent. I'm glad she had good race company.
Becky- that sucks. Deep breaths, you'll get it all fixed! Good luck at ChessyMan this weekend. That's gonna be AWESOME prep for IMFL!
I did one short 30 min run yesterday and it was heavenly. But my calves are tight today- a reminder to hit the roller and do some stretching. I'm also trying to get back to a regular Yoga routine. Need to find that magic class - so I've gotta venture out and try a few new studios. I guess this is the right time to make it happen.
Oh- and somehow I have 4 vacation days I need to use before the end of the year. This time of year is tough to take off where I work- but I've gotta make it happen! If nothing else I'll do a few "staycation" days and visit places around here that I haven't been yet. Oh- or maybe take a surfing lesson :-)
Becky, sorry to hear about your bike! Dangit! So glad you have a good attitude towards it all though. School has been keeping me crazy-busy! Haven't surfed and read through the forums much lately, or read race reports yet! (Promise I'll get to the RR's!) I have been trying to get my running going, to have a decent marathon in Chicago. Other than that, I'm draggin' my wagon!! Feel pretty lost w/o a 'routine'. Have been very tired from work, so it's been difficult to get up and work out, and impossible to have any energy at the end of the day, to work out! Hopefully things will simmer down soon... Very cool to hear what everyone is doing or planning on doing this winter. I really want to try PX90, but money is prohibitive at this moment. Need to save the $$$ for IMFL sign up in Nov.! Any other ladies out there, thinking about doing FL in 2011? How about any guys who are peeping in here?
morning ladies! thanks for the well wishes... I'm feeling pretty good about it all in spite of the potential for a mechanical melt down... it will be what it will be. that's why this is a rehearsal and not the real deal.
I've started packing the car. All I need to do is pack my cooler and take the bike down...very glad I decided not to try to work a half day today. I slept in a bit (til 7) then did my 40 min run... hill repeats (ugh)... then dropped my seat more (per Todd's comments of my video from last night)... oh, the PowerBar perform came yesterday. Not in time for my long run, but I made 3 flasks for my fuel belt to take with me tomorrow. So, I'm glad about that. 2 concentrated infinit bottles for the ride and about 21 oz in my fuel belt for the run. Weather is supposed to be sunny with a high of 87. Seriously, what is it about race days in Cambridge ... always brutal! But, I've raced in worse, and it will be cool to be doing a Z1/2 ride and a Z1 run... that should help! And the massage I've already scheduled for Sunday afternoon will definitely help!!!
Glad to hear the Moo Chicas are feeling good... and starting to work the kinks out and get back to a routine! Definitely listen to your bodies and go slow and easy... you need and deserve the break even if you're itchy to get back out there...
That run yesterday felt great. I was fine all day at work. Came home and all seemed good. I cooked dinner, etc. Then I crashed so hard last night and slept more deeply than I have all week. Not sure if that was a good thing.
Still dealing with an abscess left over from riding the bike (don't ask). But I'd rather ride than not, so I will go out easy again this weekend. It is hard to force myself to ride without power, but I need the mental disconnect to have fun.
Nemo and Beth- You are making me jealous with the yoga. There is a studio 2 miles from my house. I need to stop in and give it a try.
@Becky- Glad the derailleur is not getting you down. Good luck this weekend.
Beth-OMG yes I have your Moojo! I had a moment of panic when I saw your post as I had totally forgot about it. Sheesh...post IM brain. Good news is I found it safe in my gear bag that I had not unpacked yet from Wisconsin. I haven't even put the pedals back on my tri bike. PM me your address and I will send her back to you on Monday, I work all weekend. k8trigirl@hotmail.com
@Becky--what Kate said about the bike! Knock 'em dead!
Ran 35' this morning--fresh legs are nice. My sternum still hurts like the dickens, and I am headed to the doc just to make sure. I'm sure it's a bone/cartilege (sp?) bruise, but prolly wise to get checked out. Really hurt to exhale by the end of the run. Will continue to take it easy for mind, body, spirit.
Keith is deep into bike shopping, and I'm having fun petting all the shiny new bikes. It will take him a while to decide, and will go deep--he's an engineer. In the meantime, I don't mind tagging along one bit!
Headed to VT tomorrow to see my son and new grandpuppy! Great weekend coming up!
Becky: My good mtb friend (a guy) once said: A rear derailleur is like a scrotum hanging from your ankle...It doesn't do much good there and someone's gonna get hurt. I've bashed off at least 2 RD's on the mtb. You'd think by now someone would come up with a better design besides going to single speed. Anyhoo, glad your getting a new RD. Oh and showing up at your LBS with a bike problem doesn't make you the stupid girl (and if you LBS treats you like one, go find another one!). I remember showing up at my LBS with a tire half on the rim because I didn't have the hand strength and didn't know how to use a tire lever to get it on. They were so nice about helping me out. 7 years later that same LBS is showing me how to overhaul my disc brakes (mtb).
Kate: Nice to hear from you! You had an outstanding IMWI, chica! So what's on the schedule for 2011?
Michele C: Abscess...Ouch! I&D, baby---where there is pus, one must cut. Hope that heals up fast!
Linda: I'm interested to see what bike Keith will chose. The searching process is sometimes just as fun as getting a new bike. Chest pain after an endo---I've endo'd plenty of times on the mtb---that whole front of the torso achiness lingers for at least 3 weeks for me...and that's landing on dirt. You landed on pavement! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's not rib fractures. Give Puppy Gus a big hug for me!
It's 12 days post-IM and I've done NO EXERCISE. My brain says,"Yes, time to ride the mtb, the 'cross bike. The dirt calls to you, woman!" But I get home from work and just pass out. So tomorrow morning I'm going to go to the local 'cross race (don't worry! I'm not that foolish to jump into a 'cross race without having at least once practiced dismounts/remounts) and ride the course before the race starts. That's if I don't sleep in...Ha!
@Kit- I think lifting that fruit tart counts as some exercise :-)
@ Linda- have a great weekend and soak up the love sista!
@Becky- The pic of you from Matt @ mile 18 with sunglasses & boa are a totally classic pic. Hard for me to think of ya without the boa now. Relax, have fun and let the race come to you. You will do awesome!! Wish we could all be there for ya!
Ran again this morning (#3 this week yah!) Slowly working back in. Had some company finally for this run. I enjoy running alone every once in a while but goes by quicker with new stories to hear! Doing 5 mile trail race tomorrow and looking forward to it. Never ran on this course before so something new! And I LOVES my pink Pearl Izumi trail shoes. Just feels good to put them on!
OM gosh... funny... I just realized I haven't checked the weather or forecast for 10 days... YIKES! Sorry weather.com....
Weather.com is totally like the jilted lover. Hanging on it's every word, can't get enough, then pffft...sorry, you're no longer needed.
No sternum fracture as I thought--thank heavens. Now I just have to wait it out like Kit says. Take the silver lining, leave the cloud. I've gotten good at that this year. Could have been so much worse.
Early am trail run. Funny I get up and have nothing laid out, throw on some clothes, decide I don't even need a water bottle, it's "only" 5 miles. Boy how times have changed. Legs starting to feel better and anxiously awaiting the first frost so allergies get better. Hilly beautiful course that I hadn't run before. Lots of fun! Now I'm puttsing around cause I don't want to start cleaning house. Oh well... guess it won't clean itself! Off to work out #2. Hope all you chickas have the awesome weather weekend we have here!
Last real summer like day here in NE, hot and humid. Love it! Went out for a 2 hour ride, then came home and did a run. My first BRick since IMWI. The run was my usual 25' brick route, but this time the legs felt like stumps the entire run. I am still forcing myself to NOT look at the Garmin, so it wasn't until I returned home that I could see I had averaged just slower than MP. I'll take it!
Catching up on stuff- I decided to ride my bike to get by hair and nails done. Went to get my cruiser bike and it didn't even have a saddle on it! (When did I do that?) But there next to it was my MTB. Over a year since that was ridden, so I pumped the tires for a rough road/ beat up bike path cruise. Couldn't find my bike shoes (different clip ins for each bike) so... I road my MTB with shimano clip in pedals and wore Birkenstock sandals on my feet.
Meant to mention this earlier: @Tracy Wood- I definitely plan to go back for my DNP. Thinking that whenever I quit this job, for whatever reason, that's when I will apply. Currently no plans to quit. But you are saving for a PM and a house. Get the PM, then the house, then go back to school, borrowing enough to live on. That's what I did for grad school and it was fine. Follow your dream.
Woohoo! I rode my beloved mtb for 1 hour today with Kevin. So so so FUN!! How I missed it this summer! I find that riding the tribike all summer leaves me a crap for dirt riding skills. In order, the following skills are the first to go: 1. Sighting: need to look WAY farther ahead of trail. That skill is usually the first to go, but the quickest to return. 2. Properly weighting the bike: It's not my tribike so I can't plant my butt on the seat and just pedal. 3. Judicious use of brakes
Nonetheless, I had a wonderful ride and feel like I'm quickly getting my dirt legs back. Just in time for 'cross races! We're riding again tomorrow then Kev's gonna have me do track stand, wheelie, slow riding/balancing skills in the driveway. I heart Off-season!
did a century today. somehow I ended up with 145 ride miles this week and 9 run miles. uhhh... If I decide to do AZ next year there are about 5 local centuries and today was one of those and good tng opp. post ride were massages and I eyeballed the guy with the largest hands to work out the sore spots!!! oh and at one of the aid stations, why I ate a whole dill spear and then drank down some pickle juice as easily as water! think they should serve that instead of IM perform. chugged it down while the aid station workers just stared. then reached back into my singlet pocket and pulled out a baby coke, unscrewed my Carbo Pro filled water bottle and poured the coke right into the headspace! one quick cup of water into the aero bottle, the other one poured on the nape of my neck and I was ready to go!! mile 75 aid station looked like a civil war battleground with bikes in dissarray and laid down and men with their heads hung over with glassy eyes watching me pour water on myself. big guys, skinny guys all sitting around listening to C/W music at mile 75. not wanting to get sucked into the misery, I didn't even use the porta potty but hopped back on my bike, outta there!!
Geeze, you ladies are making me feel really lazy!!! I had fun volunteering yesterday at a local 5K. I rode my bike to/from the race, 45 min each way, and I thought that was pretty good! HA!
Nice easy 40 min run this morning. I'm hoping to do more frequent running next week and start building up with the hopes of doing a Half Mary in November.
The forecast is for rain today- which is good, I am REALLY behind on paying the bills!
@Kit - yay mountain bike ride and fun with the DH!!
@Kris - that pic is a riot, I have to show it to Dan. I had so much fun out there, wouldn't have missed it!
The RR is in the books! My first 2.4 mile OWS, went off without a hitch. T1 seemed okay to me - the ride was loooooong and hot. Still have to work on some fit issues... but other than that, I think my "line" came on the bike. Miles 64-100 were just plain hard. My knee was hurting. My right shoulder was hurting. My neck was stiff. My forearms were sore/chaffed (I"m shocked that the word "Zipps" isn't permanently embedded in each... But when I hit 100 my mood just jumped. I was happy to run for an hour and was way too fast the first 30 minutes... Instead of running 10:50 I was closer to 10:20 (and then because I stopped to walk and slow myself down). The way back was closer to 10:50, walking through water stops (I ran on the IM course with my own fuel belt). It was flippin hot... Official results aren't up, but based on what another woman said her time was in the tent, I think I'm in the 1:15ish range. My watch time read about 6:22 for the bike, but I stopped it to pee twice and at special needs... so It's probably closer to 6:30-6:35 officially. With tired legs on a new and not quite perfectly fit bike, on a hot and windy day, I'm good with that. Very Florida esque course... Doing the AV and an hour run after gave me some confidence that I will, in fact, actually be able to finish an IM... it may not be pretty, but I know I can physically and mentally do it... so, the event was a success.
Slept til 8. Went to breakfast with Dan followed by the farmers market and the grocery. Did laundry and vacuumed... now chilling and catching up on some tivo while foam rolling til my 4:00 massage. My IT bands and my shoulder/neck needs some serious work... hope todd can get me golden soon...

@Linda-crazy you spent your birthday at the dentist.
@Marianne I loved your poem.
@Becky-totally sucks about your rear deraileur. Can you buy one at the LBS and send the bill to bike fit guy? What a PIA!!! That is why I made friends and spend my money at the LBS-get things fixed in real time. At least he is going to replace it.

No sternum fracture as I thought--thank heavens. Now I just have to wait it out like Kit says. Take the silver lining, leave the cloud. I've gotten good at that this year. Could have been so much worse.
Running tomorrow!!!! Yay!!!
Meant to mention this earlier:
@Tracy Wood- I definitely plan to go back for my DNP.
I find that riding the tribike all summer leaves me a crap for dirt riding skills. In order, the following skills are the first to go:
Nice easy 40 min run this morning. I'm hoping to do more frequent running next week and start building up with the hopes of doing a Half Mary in November.
The forecast is for rain today- which is good, I am REALLY behind on paying the bills!
I am practicing the art of lazy. That's the "work" of recovery, right?
Two fancy parties down, and I'm going to brunch soon. I'd so rather run 5ks for charity, but did have fun playing dress-up -- and wing man.
Hi ladies, hope your afternoons are going well!
@Linda - good news!
