  • Here's Happy Thanksgiving to all my fabulous chicas!!! I'm so thankful for all of you....

I'm off for pie now! image

  • Hope everybody had a great day!!! I am finally taking a few deep breaths (or as deep as I can considering I am AGAIN stuffed on all the Thanksgiving goodies : )- gotta love those leftovers!

Went to a movie with the kids today and generally took it easy, which was a really nice change of pace.

Beth - my vdot is 35 now and I had my first run today in a month!! It wasn't pretty, but it felt great to run - YAY!

Kris - wish I had a suggestion, but since I have a cast iron stomach I am probably not the best source of info. I like the caffeine in the gels though too and find the PowerBar brand ones work well for me.

Nothing very conclusive from the MRI - which is good that there isn't anything jumping out that is wrong (other than as she said "normal wear and tear") and all the old problems are resolved, but that means the pain is still a mystery. I got the go ahead to proceed with caution though so we'll see how it goes. I am busily formulating "Plan B" and will post in the regular forum for guidance on how to do that since I have missed 4 weeks of Nov. OS.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

  • Hi Chicas!

I hope you all had happy Thanksgivings. Charlie Trotter's people did a fantastic job making Thanksgiving dinner. I set the table. Mac handled the reheated of food. Everyone was happy. There were even gingerbread men. My awesome sister, Jo Cobble, led the clean up charge. Best. Help. Ever. It was great to wake up Friday morning and only have to worry about getting the tablecloth to the dry cleaner and unloading the dishwasher. That I can handle.   Outsourcing was definitely the right idea this year.

In the spirit of the old challenge of the week, today's challenge is take all the pics I'm due to post in the forums -- cowgirl mojo pics coming your way! Also, to actually listen to the training and racing with power webinars and look through all the Saris manuals and learn all the things that little yellow computer on my bike is supposed to do.

    Happy Saturday!

  • Hey girls,  I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!!

    * Turkey Thursday:

we did and yes we overate!!! at my mother in law's, Southern Living cook at her best!  brother in law fried TWO turkeys, there were FOUR kinds of dressing, 7 desserts and numerous vegetables... and I consumed way too much of my fudge!!

    I love flowers

took a walk to the school playground with GMom...and some of the cousins, here is my son.

while others chilled after the meal!

three are mine!  mother in law has 8 grandsons and 2 granddaughters!

Grace took this pic of me outside!  you can see we got some "dry weather" as I still have curls by end of day!!!  felt like a Colorado day here... sunny but cold and dry!!

    *Black Friday:

well we dogged ourselves out but got Christmas put up including lights, cards, tree, stockings, dishes and regular chores!  never left the house and wore newest race tshirt for motivation!!  and at the end of the day when I went outside to see hubby blowing off the leaves and seeing the twinkling white lights on the bushes and the house, I exclaimed "YOU WON!" and we laughed like we were in some sorta Christmas movie as sure enough we were the first ones on our street to have lights on, = a rarity and has never happened!  I highfived him.

    *Sunny Saturday:

still did chores but got outside to ride with other ENers:  Heather, David and also my husband to knock out the 2 x 12' and 2 x 15' and rode for about 35ish miles.....  69 degrees and sunny and windy but everybody was out catching the last warm weather day!!  I felt so sluggish from either food, dust of cleaning, or no training that I wondered if I could even ride my bike!!  but once in the "hammer" position, it all came back to me!!  I am the "last" one in this little merry group but I love the intervals as they can get ahead of me and everybody doing their own thing on designated route and we regroup!!  piriformis has flared back up, so no running for me since Tuesday and my attempted 1 mile brick run yesterday was a failure!!

    * Sleepy Sunday:

okay so caught up, i just slept 11 hours!!  but have doc checkup next week as surely my desire for 10 hours is not normal!!  this is not Ironman training!!  possibly Holiday training wears me out... lol.  but still 11 hours???

so how are the rest of you???  Cozumel today and I am still waiting on Gina's Race report!!!    m

  • Hi Everyone-

Hope you all had a great  Thanksgiving! I had to work, but we still had a nice Thanksgiving meal at work. No black Friday shopping for me. Had a great time in Az ( except for my cold that I picked up, which is kicking my ass). will post pics soon. It was great watching at IMAZ

Gina- How are you and Su feeling these days? Hope you are enjoying some down time

Carrie Himel- Hope all is ok, didn't see the bike splits.....

Kris- Your marathon coming up this weekend, how are you feeling?

Carrie Chavez- You have been in my thoughts, hope you have good news today, sound like a rough few weeks with MIL, and your tests. You have been so positive through out all, very admirable

I am just soooo happy to be part of EN and this women's group. Such beautiful strong women- very inspiring!

#20- for triathlon list- Triathletes are proud of crazy tan lines ( or is that just me :) shows off all our hard work!  Last year (2008),  at one race did not do agood job with sunscreen, had a sunburn tatoo of my age on my calf all summer/fall.

Well, gotta go , at work, not feeling to hot, so hoping they let me go early @11- fingers crossed

  •  Hi ladies!  All is well.  Both Daniel and I had a DNF yesterday.  It was crazy!   Here is a link to our mini race report:

    http://endurancenation.us.dnnmax.co....aspx#3448

More info and pics to come soon!

  • just read the race report, and us gals are so proud of you carrie!!! glad you are safe too. m
  • Not alot of time but wanted to check in..... Work has been super busy so not much time this past 2 weeks.  Have been following everyone & trying to keep up!

Taper week last week for me so only ran 6-7 miles a day.  Did the local Turkey Trot and actually managed to snag first in my age group!  Woohoo - top turkey!  Had dinner at my mom's with the family and crashed early (8:30pm- no... really!!)  Fri- didn't do the traditional shopping deal as my daughter went to Ohio with fiancee for family dinner there.  Did manage to pick up a nifty new crockpot for me $19- great deal!  Still not the in the holiday shopping mood.  Usually I'm done by mid Nov at latest.... slackin this year.  Last Long run on Sat- 12 miles that turned into 10 1/2.   We've been exceptionally blessed with warmer weather this fall and the past week has been no exception.  Sun-  cleaned out all drawers, closets etc and made a HUGE mess!  Hauling a load or two to Goodwill tonight and a load or two to the dumpster.

This week.... 5 days till marathon- Sat Dec 5th.  (Thanks for asking Tracy!)  Still no hotel room but hoping my daily calls to the hotels will net a cancelation this week.  Not worried as think it's a good shot and if not, I'll just be staying about 7miles away- no biggee!  Trying to rest up and hydrate this week.  Know I'm prepared well, forecast calls for 40-50's for race time so all is set!

Leigh-  If this past weekend was a slacker run for you, I'll take that all day long! You are SO going to smoke that half course!  Enjoy your taper!!

Gina- on Thurs I saw the infinite wisdom in your IM timing-- how incredible to be able to have awesome dinners right about the time you start to get hungry again post IM.  Hope you & Su are both recovering well and enjoyed the holidays!

Beth-  your table looked too pretty to mess up by eating.  Glad it all went well!

M- I've gotta know.... what kinda cake is that in your pic?  It looks heavenly!

Will ck in later when the slave drum isn't beating

  • Rasbperry almond torte or the turkey which was icing over yellow! pecan pie, apple and pumpkin! husband sick today so taking him to docs so another rest day for me. I have googled Hamstring and think by self diagnosis that I strained it, probably when dog was running to catch a squirrel last Monday!!! I got better on him on leash but that mighta done it for me. I can feel it every left foot strike but at least the butt pain (piriformis) is not there today!!! lol. I am a mess. went grocery shopping and nicely caught up on Monday chores. sunny but cold and dry here. I fell terribly fat from holiday weekend and lack of running, one week of no running. fat toad. m

Ahhh....I want to try the Kswiss...but I'm I heavy runner who pronates...think they will work for someone like that?  Sounds like you had a fantastic time!

Sheryl- I am also a heavy runner who pronates ( I plan for the heaviness to go away by July). So far, so good on Kswiss. Only thing I am not sure of yet is whether or not I will put a few drain holes in orthotics. The insole in kswiss has wholes drilled in them to allow draingae of water/sweat. My podiatrist would not recommend since they don't sell in in running stores yet ( he really didn't know about them) The k swiss marketing person told me in 2010 they wil start selling in running specialty stores. I'll let you know more after I have run some more.

I am also becoming more of a forefoot runner, learning Chi running, may also do a Evolution running clinic which promotes forefoot running. Over weekend read  the book Born to Run- EXCELLANT! very interesting , The book touches on the evolution of running in man, also speaks of the increase in injuries with more sophisticated running shoes. They say it weakens the foot. I may even consider the Vibram Five Fingers

Oh- saw Blindside sat night with Sandra Bullock- very good movie, tears and laughter. Even the man next to me wiped a tear at the end of the movie

Ok, really need a nap now. Wait to pick up meds that will help my cough and let me sleep

  • I saw The Blind Side this weekend, too.  What a great movie!  I found it thoroughly uplifting.

Those of us in the October OS start the legendary 30-30s tomorrow.  Should I be scared?

Kris, enjoy your taper, and good luck on your marathon!

  • Robin -- You are my vdot twin from last year. I'm glad you MRI went well.

Kris -- Happy taper! And how much fun to do a straight marathon. All admiration from over here. For some reason, I think running a marathon would be more difficult than Ironman.

  • Beth - Thanks!!! I have hope now image, but you have a lot of years on me! Your table for Thanksgiving was beautiful!! and Charlie Trotter's - YUM! Have you ever eaten at Le Colonial? I have to go every time I'm in Chicago - love that place.

Kris - best of luck with the Marathon!!! and getting a closer hotel room. I hope you got the nutrition thing worked out. Travel safe.

x3 on THE BLIND SIDE. Loved it!

M - I wish I could reach out and grab some of that yummy looking spread from your Turkey Day.

Glad to be back in the saddle again - rode my bike 2x last week and again today and feel pretty good!! My mood is drastically improved image. Will run tomorrow!
  • Thanks for sharing the TG pics. Looks like "a good time was had by all." At our house my husband took over the meal as expected (and planned, since I went off to the Turkey Trot). He was so cute. He got a little distracted when everyone arrived and when the wine started flowing. So things were a little off timing wise before we sat down. It worked out fine. We agreed, however, that my project management and execution skills probably would have helped in that last :30. He's such a good egg!!

As Kristen said we're on to our 30/30s tomorrow! I've just spent some time with my iPod getting ready. Still needs work, but I'm already behind here on EN. That will have to happen over time, I guess.

I'm generally distracted because vacation is coming!!!!! On Saturday we're off to Key West for the vacation we didn't get to go on thanks to my face plant! FINALLY! Also, because we're going away for R&R and I always need lots of reading material during vacay I caved and ordered my Kindle. I've had serious lust for that thing for a long time and I've waited, and told myself "no" for MONTHS now. But I gave up the fight. So my attention has been a bit drawn to various articles and tips and tricks about that thing. Adding to the distraction, I've been painting again (it's good to be back). We now have two of my original pieces of "art" (use the term VERY loosely) to hang (one's going in my pain cave) and I've now got a HUGE canvas for which I'm mulling subject matter.

Kris - rest, rest, rest, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!! You're going to be great in this marathon. Your run fitness is so strong! I'm so impressed with your resilience and mental fortitude to do all this stuff post IMLou. Can't wait to hear about it.

The Blind Side does look really good. I almost cried from the trailer though....ugh.

Tracy - I hope you're feeling better by now! At least you weren't sick while you were on vacation! That would really suck!

Beth - When are you in CO? Where will you be, am I remembering Winter Park correctly? Tell me your dates....

Oh and a doggie story - my sister-in-law and fam got a little dachshund! Someone found him and tried to reunite him with his owner, but after several weeks and no response from anyone, my SIL agreed to take him. He is so darned cute. And super sweet! His name is Chester. Which I think is perfect for a little black and tan sausage dog!

Alright sorry to ramble. I need to start winding down for bed so I can get up and hit thos 30/30s....let's go Kristen, we've got work to do!

We have tried as a family to transition to forefoot running with many injuries and lots of pain.  My daughter was even evaluated for compartment syndrome last year during track season because of tremendous pain.  We have all decided to stay with heel striking for now unless some other better solution presents itself.  I have a pair of Newtons that I have not given a fair shake (they are even the super cool bright pink pair ).  I might try the Kswiss as my next pair.  I have a friend who was once a prolific marathon runner tell me...run with the one what brought ya....so far, the Saucony Hurricane Grid has NEVER let me down and I have always loved them.  They are so wonderful when I get a new pair and hit the pavement.  I have read though that with the types of shoes that are evolving are increasing risk of injury...

  • Robin -- No Le Colonial yet. I will definitely put it ont the list. I've been "eating North" lately and exploring the cuisine of the North Shore. Have you been to Carlos' Restaurant in Highland Park? Carlos just understands meat better than anyone else.

Olivia -- On Thanksgiving project management -- Mac and I actually had a discussion on the critical path to getting Thanksgiving dinner on the table by 3:30. Items included ironing napkins, setting outlook reminder to put turkey in the overn, etc. Yup geekery.

AND skiing - December 27-January 16 all are fair game for slope time. And, yes, Winter Park. Come ski!

AND do we get to see these paintings? In the spirit of I'll show you mine if you show me yours, a link to a quilt I actually posted to Etsy. I've been making quilts for years, but decided to start putting them out there. The etsy shop is currently mostly beautiful dishes, but, hopefully, I will have more quilts soon. Anyway, store is my new baby.

  • hey catching up.. my husband is still sick, possibly vertigo but literally unable to move from bed or couch and we have doc appt today cuz he was too sick to make the car drive yesterday! and then I took youngest 2 to dentists = traumatic although a pediatric dentist. so I am taking another rest day... and it has only been since Sat for training but it sorta gets you. but good for my hammie/butt as it twinges with every left foot strike!! but no motrin today so possible progess. I run with Asics 2150 an have been in them since inception and they were 2120, 2130 etc. I buy every 3 mos. so yep on not changing. "heavy runner" okay the increase of running will help with all of that! doing chores here today before doc appt and cold this morning, no really frost on ground and mid 30's... = yuck. I know some of you live in cold weather and like it!!! well can't stay too long but thinking of you.... Gina are you recovering?? Carrie are you vacationing still? and Linda" where are you?! good Luck KrisF this weekend. have fun in Fla vacationing..Carrie C. I think I missed what happened to you, so sorry that I did.  Sheryl, Tracy and the other chickas, a shout out to ya!!  m

  • Hi all! m thanks for asking. I'm in quarterly newsletter deadline hell. image Almost done.

Nothing much to report. Tday was very, very nice. For those of you not on FB, I got an entirely FREE, COOKED dinner from Whole Foods cuz the trukey I bought there went bad. Opened in 8:30 Wed night to prepare, and it smelled awful. Store closed at 9, so we booked over there. The staffers were falling over themselves to make it right. Total came to $285 in free stuff! I will admit, I did enjoy having the pre-made dinner. I cook E-nough!

About to head out for a short run. Just too cold to do it soaking wet off the bike in the morning. So now it's changing clothes AGAIN to do a 20-30' run. Lotta work for not much time, but I know the frequency pays off i the long run.

Gotta scoot. Another layout proof in the email!

  • Sheryl, I went through 2 pairs of Newtons before associating them with hamstring pain beginning within a mile of running.  I think I wanted to wear them so much that it kept me from realizing they just weren't going to work for me.  They are so cute and are probably the most comfortable shoe on my foot that I have ever worn.  Now I just use them for running errands, etc, and always get lots of compliments on them.  I went back to the good ol' Asics 2150 and haven't had hamstring pain since.

Beth and Olivia, I am so impressed with your creative sides!  Please post some pics!  I don't have a creative bone in my body so I live vicariously through others.  My partner is a certified art appraiser and advisor, so I at least get exposed to some good stuff.

Marianne, I hope your husband is ok!

  • Marianne---Holy TG desserts, girl! How do you stay so skinny in the face of all those yummy treats?!  I hope your husband is feeling better soon.

Sheryl, Kristin--there's a thread on the medical forum about the Vibram FF's/barefoot running. Leigh has some really great insights on it.

Beth---Way cool quilt! Artistic sewing skills really impress me. I'm just trying to figure out how to make one out of my race shirts.

Today I am wearing real clothes: the kind with buttons, not made of technical/wicking/stretchy fabrics. I typically wear scrubs to work because at least once a week I get blood/pus/pee/poo/bile/nasty toenail on my clothes. Not today because it's the Medical Staff Christmas Party and Quarterly Meeting at a nice restaurant.  I'd rather go home and ride my 2 x 12's, but in order to not be fined for not attending these meetings I must go...and wear real clothes. Yep, I'm a whiny toad about such a small thing so I guess I'll just be grateful for the 364 other days of the year that I don't have to wear real clothes!

  • Beth....kewl quilt. I have been quilting for years but my sewing room has been trashed in the past few weeks. For some reason if my daughter is cleaning house and doesn't know where to put something.....she puts it there....

30/30 was NOT what I thought it was.....but it was FUN.....I loved it. My legs feel worked now.....

Kit...real clothes can be good....especially if they don't come home with poo on them...or vomit..yuk.....Marianne, I agree, no idea how you stay skinny.....my weight went up a lb and all I had was ONE piece of pecan pie...dangit.

  • Hi ladies,

Thanks for all your PM's, FB PM's and encouragement here in the forums. I am sorry I do not get in here enough to this thread to keep up. I got the results back yesterday and NO Breast Cancer. Oh my gosh has this been a tough few weeks. I prayed non stop. You know the poem about 2 footprints in the sand?? And soon there is only one and the person asks God where were you then and God said that is when I carried you. Wellllll God totally carried me through these last few weeks. I write this with tears in my eyes. Steve's Mom was I'll, my mammo was abnormal, I had a huge lump and they kept asking me for more tests then the core biopsy. That left me off training most of last week. I had peace knowing either way I would be OK but still I was scared. So thankfully it was only a fibrocystic mass and no evidence of malignancy!!

I am back to week 5 of the OS and as always forever grateful for all I have. Including you beautiful ladies!!

    Much love,
    Carrie
  • Oh Carrie that is such great news. I am crying from reading your post! I think we’ll all engulf you in a little virtual group hug right now!!! I am sure that relief doesn’t even come close to describing how you feel right now. Be good to yourself and let your emotions and psyche heal these next few days. You need it!

  • Wow, Carrie! I think the entire EN Nation just breathed an enormous collective sigh of relief.  The anticipation and not knowing is truly the worse part of these workups. I am so truly happy for you!

  • Oh, Carrie! Hugs from across Internet land! So relieved for you!

  •  Carrie!  I'm so happy for you!  What a tremendous relief!  Saying a prayer of thanksgiving.

  • Carrie, that's wonderful news!

  • Carrie- It is so frightening when that happens!!  Seems time stands still while you are waiting and waiting. SO happy that you have good results!!

  •  Great news Carrie! Huge Hug your way

  • good news to Carrie!!! wow. what a last few weeks, I hate those "abnormal" mammograms = please come back!
well DH got some meds so hopefully better tomorrow. i gotta go back to pharmacy so scooting off. m
